An Act of Neighborliness
The skies were dark. A strong wind was blowing hard, cutting my face like a sharp knife. Rain fell in big drops and thunder and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked home, through the streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren holding their heavy schoolbags tightly and rushing home, I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with boards.
I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard some sounds. It sounded like children crying. I quickly turned back and went back to the place from where the sounds came. I was frightened! To my sadness, I found that a small child had fallen into the hole on the road. The boards had moved away with the force of the rushing water. I could hardly see the child as it was dark all around me. I told him that I was going to look for help. I knew the neighbors well, and they all shared a sense of neighborliness, willing to give a hand.

Radzi was the first out of the plane. He collected his luggage and quickly made his way to the arrival, hardly able to contain his excitement at meeting his family after six years abroad. He looked around expectantly, hoping to hear his voice being called out but he heard no sweet voices. He turned around and saw his parents, their dear faces shining with pride and pleasure but of his teenage twin sisters—none. There was no sign of them.
"They must be hiding somewhere—they love to play hide and seek." His father smiled but said nothing. His mother kept on hugging him not allowing him to say anything. His father murmured, "Let's get home. They're waiting for us at home." Radzi smiled, relieved to know they were at home. He kept on talking about how he toured Europe as Wani asked him to in her letter and he was rather puzzled whenever his parents exchanged glances.
Reaching home, he spied a lone figure at the door. "Why one There should be two." The twins were inseparable but it could be that six years had made all the difference. As that lone figure rushed towards him, he thought it was Wani but she said she was Wati. So it must be. He really could not differentiate between the two of them and they had fun deceiving him all the time. And they really had a lot of laughter over his mistaking one for the other.
"Where's Wani "
"In your bedroom."
"Wani, Bang's home."
He walked into his room and read the words "Welcome Home, Dr. Radzi!" He trusted his twin sisters to be so dramatic! He was studying medicine as a doctor and he had been focusing on his final examinations which needed much concentration. Wati invited him to go downstream to their favorite hideout. "Bang, I wish to be alone with you without Wani. Wani can wait her turn."

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather’s house in Puthur in Tamil Nadu, which was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm(棕榈) trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, the children would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play with the rabbits and squirrels jumping about in the trees and bushes. He also liked fishing in the link ponds with his friends. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place.
This winter vacation. Sami was surprised when be came to his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any trees left. What lay at the water’s edge(边缘) were only sucks and mud. He saw houses built near the sea. Logs(木材), branches of trees and stones lay around. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
“Grandpa, where have all the trees gone ” asked Sami.
“People have cut them down for wood, to be used for fuel and furniture.” replied Grandpa.
“There will be no more trees then. Where will the birds perch(栖息) and the squirrels play ”
“Let us hope that that day never comes,” sighed Grandpa.
Grandpa’s house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He liked each palm tree in his courtyard. He also admired the two big trees near the front door. He called one of them Petu, and the other, Beta. They gave the sweetest juiciest coconuts which he always enjoyed sharing with Sami.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He tossed and turned in bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting(裂开). He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa, “It’s an earthquake”. Grandpa cried out. They ran outside the house where they thought it would be safer.

Sticking to a Dream
Last fall I sent 200 letters to businesses, doctors and friends asking for sponsorship (赞助) so I could attend the National Youth Leadership Forum (论坛) on Medicine. “I don’t think anyone is going to send you money, Jessica, people just aren’t that kind,” said my mother. I was shocked by such a comment. “But you’re wrong. People are kind, and they will be generous enough to send me money,” I argued.
Everyone doubted my efforts and I heard every excuse why people would be too busy to help me. “These people don’t even know you. Do you honestly think a stranger will send you money ” asked my friends. “Why put yourself through all this disappointment. Just forget it,” said my grandfather. I decided not to listen. The best thing I could do was attend the Forum and learn more about my future career.
I waited a few days for my first response, which came from a bank. “Dear Jessica,” it read. “At this time our bank does not offer aid to students, but we wish you luck and success in your project.” My heart sank. I was rejected. It’s only one rejection, I thought. Cheer up. You will receive a letter with a check for some money in it.
I rushed home from school every day the next two weeks. As soon as I was in the door, I yelled, “Any mail for me ” I usually heard, “No mail, Jessica.” With the deadline approaching, I still received no money. I was getting a little worried.

Fiona Simpson, 23, was on her way home. She was driving on the D'Aguilar Highwav in Queensland, Australia, It was a long, lonely road, but she had company at least. Her 78-year-old grandmother and four-month-old daughter were with her for the journey.
Clouds started to roll in overhead. Fiona hadn't bothered to listen to the weather report that morning. Mostly because she had expected to arrive home before any sort of downpour hit. As she drove down the D’Aguilar Highway, however, the slight pattering(拍打) of rain began to beat into an angry drum beat upon the roof of the car.
Even though she had been driving quite slowly, she could hardly see the lines in the road. The pouring rain soon became so heavy that her windshield wipers(雨刮器) couldn't keep up. Fiona knew that her only option was to pull the car onto the side of the road until the bad weather lessened.
She stopped the car when suddenly she heard a sound that completely shocked her. The loud bang came from behind her, right near the window where her daughter sat. The glass of the window was broken, and a moment later she discovered that something equally sharp and dangerous was hitting her child.
It was hailstones(冰雹), nearly golf-ball-sized chunks of ice falling from the sky. Hailstones can cause serious damage. Even cattle can be killed as well if they do not seek shelter. Fiona dived into the back seat and tried to form a human shield(挡板) over the baby. Meanwhile, the hailstone was battering the roof of the car so loudly that she couldn't even hear the child crying beneath her.
Queensland had apparently been hit with a super-cell storm that resulted in tennis-ball-sized hailstones. Soon, even Grandma was being battered with the same falling ice. Fiona moved towards the front, still holding her baby in her arms, and tried to shield Grandma as well. Fiona found them caught right in the middle of the storm with nowhere to hide.
Paragraph 1:
At this time, a truck pulled off beside them.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I didn’t see the thin plastic tape running across the bread bag when I put the bread in my shopping cart or when I checked out. It wasn’t until I unpacked the bread at home that I realized that I’d broken the rules again.
That stupid plastic tape joined the long list of mistakes I made in just one week of trying to eat plastic-free. Last month, I challenged myself to purchase a week’s worth of food without bringing home any plastic. That meant no yogurt containers or plastic packages.
I chose a budget of $115 (roughly half-way between the average weekly grocery bill for a family of two in Massachusetts). On Saturday afternoon, I pulled into the parking lot of a well-known zero-waste shopping center.
I started in the produce section, where I typically got a plastic bag of organic baby carrots. This time, I could not go there because every vegetable in the organic section was packed in plastic containers. But I found some beautiful carrots among the non-organic produce. Then I saw the plastic price labels hanging off their rubber bands. I rolled my cart past the green beans and grapes, all inside the plastic. I weighed loose apples, onions and sweet potatoes. My anxiety kicked in—a feeling that I wouldn’t have enough. So, I bought a head of cabbage.
I tapped prices into the calculator on my phone. Leaving the produce section, I was in good shape, at $32. It was time to search for protein.
I headed to the meat counter. Again, everything was prepackaged in plastic. But the man behind the glass kindly agreed to put some chicken and meat, separately, in paper bags. Together they were $21.
Tofu, cheese, yogurt and pretty much everything in the dairy section were prepackaged in plastic. Even the bottled milk had a plastic cap. But there were lots of eggs in those paper bags.

答案以及解析
1.答案:
Actually, I was not sure of what to do or where to go but decided to go to the nearest house for help. I charged away to knock on the door on end. After a while, an athletic man of medium height opened the door. Panicked as I was, I attempted to collect my thoughts, trying to explain the situation in the way as concise as possible. While calming me by patting my shoulder, the man reached over to grab the torch on the shoe cabinet near the door. No sooner had we arrived where the child was trapped than the man started to scan the surroundings. Then he inched toward the hole and stretched out to seize the child’s hands, pulling him out completely. Shortly afterwards, we sent the child to the nearest police station and waited for his parents.
The parents of the child who just arrived from work were totally shocked to hear of what had happened. They were more than grateful and thanked us. With an outpouring of relief, I was also proud of myself, as I had never imagined I would be part of a rescue party and the act of neighborliness could really make such a difference. While the mother and the father were holding the child tightly, I spotted the man beaming at the child with softness gleaming in his eyes. I was absorbed in my wild thought, wondering whether he was also a tender father. All of a sudden, thunder crashed overhead, which brought me back to reality. I walked to the man and tugged his sleeve, whispering, “Thank you.” I would never forget the good feeling of helping someone in need.

2.答案: In a quiet sad and serious tone, she related what had happened to Wani. A year ago, Wani fell seriously ill and was diagnosed with cancer. Everyone wanted to tell Radzi but Wanibegged them not to as he was sitting for his finals and she did not want him to lose all concentration and be so upset. Everyone had to promise and even after his finals, she wrote him to tour Europe before coming home. She sent him photos of her with Wati, smiling, cheerful, and healthy. Radzi was stunned and asked in agony, “How could she Why did you let her do it Why Why ” Wati kept silent. All she could do was to hug her brother, comforting him as he sobbed his heart out. When the tears dried up, Wati held out a letter. Radzi recognized the handwriting.
He took the letter and walked to the graveyard. Wati went with him, then left him to read the letter and to be alone in spirit with his beloved sister. “Bang, please don’t grieve. Remember me as the healthy, cheerful, fun-loving sister. Treasure our past moments and keep me always in your heart. Wati is with you. In her, you see me. I want to be a doctor like you. I can’t but you are one now. Be the best doctor I know. I am proud of you. ” As he read her letter, a strange peace fell on him. It was as though she was beside him, comforting him and holding his hand. He looked around, saw Wati and she smiled. In Wati, he saw Wani. He walked up to Wati, took her hand. Together, the brother and sister walked home in the silence of the quiet evening.
3.答案:Paragraph 1:
In fact, the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring(咆哮). Huge waves from the sea came crashing towards the village. They swallowed Sami and Grandpa, separated them away, and then drew back again into the sea, dragging whatever came their way. Grandpa caught hold of Petu and climbed up. He panicked and screamed out to Sami but couldn’t see him. “Sami, Sami!” Grandpa cried and wailed. The high waves came with terrifying speed and force. A wave carried him round and round. Finally he was thrown on top of a big coconut palm.
Paragraph 2:
A minutes later, the waves went back and the sea calmed down. Sami hung onto the coconut tree. He could hear the cries and the sighs of people in pain. He slowly came down the tree, very frightened. He began to call out, “Grandpa, Grandpa!” as loudly as he could. Looking around, he saw a gray, old lonely man hanging onto the tree. He went closer. It was Petu, the coconut tree, and Grandpa was on its top. He helped Grandpa get off carefully. Looking at the tree, Sami and Grandpa couldn’t help hugging it with tears of gratitude.
4.答案: But one day, I came home and heard five beautiful words, “Jessica, you have one letter.” I opened the envelope to find that it had a check for $100. My faith was restored, and my hopes skyrocketed. I was $100 richer! I jumped around the room, hugging and kissing my parents. Some people really cared. The cash flow didn’t stop there. I ended up with nearly half the tuition and was able to pay the rest myself to attend the Forum.
I have learned two important lessons from this experience. For one thing, I learned that rejection is part of life and I’ll always have to deal with it. I received much more rejections than letters with checks, but it didn’t bother me. For another, I have the strength to persist. As the saying goes, “If a man has perseverance, a stone mountain will collapse.”. If I didn’t persist, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to attend the forum.
5.答案:Paragraph 1:
At this time, a truck pulled off beside them. Aware that the people were trapped in the sudden extreme weather, two men on the truck immediately got off and offered to help. They firstly tried to took the crying baby out of the car by sheltering him from hailstones with a protective plate. Shortly after settling the baby on the backseat of the truck safely, they continued to transfer Fiona and her grandmother to their truck. They were told to stay there to wait for the storm to stop.
Paragraph 2:
After quite a long time, the storm passed. All of people on the truck felt relieved. With the help of two men, they got off. Faced up with her own car, whose windows had been seriously damaged, Fiona called for rescue and waited for help. It was not until they were picked up by the rescue workers that the two men drove off. In spite of the terrible experience, Fiona felt so lucky and grateful for the kind act from the strangers.
6.答案: At checkout, I still had $62 left but I could not find anything else without plastic. So I became a little bit angry and complained to the manager that there were too many things I couldn’t buy plastic-free. There was no dairy or juice. He said he’s interested in using more recyclable containers, but they were much more expensive. He also told me that it’s hard to add that cost to the price of food, and that paper bags for nuts, beans or snacks weren’t as attractive on shelves as plastic bags.
At the moment, I realized that perhaps I shouldn’t have had aimed too high. After all, most customers had to shop with their eyes on their wallets. The major plastic producers could not be closed down immediately. Thus, I decided to just reduce the plastic that I used once and threw away. Anyway, I was happy that I avoided using 27 plastic containers in the week. Maybe I could do better.
