One day, my brother and I were in our apartment. My parents had both gone for a party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding-dong! Ding-dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without thinking, my brother said“No."He asked if we would like to buy some comic books(漫画书),which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house, He forced me to tie up my brother's hands with the rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but tied it in a special way so my brother could untie (解开) it himself as we often did, The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable, I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied it for me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead.

About ten years ago, my wife and I left home and took a trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I didn't like to carry all my keys in my pocket during a long walk so I took off the car key and left the rest in the car. We came back, and I put the key somewhere in the car without tying it to the key ring, We made a fire and went to sleep in the back of the SUV.
The next morning, we were cleaning up our campsite when I saw a magpie(喜鹊) inside my car, It was the only time I had ever seen a bird of any kind inside the car, I walked over, and it flew away, When we got in the car to go home, I couldn't find the key. We searched and searched, even emptying out the car completely, but it was gone.
Then it hit me, The magpie must have taken it. After all, they were known for stealing shiny things to make their nests nice-looking. Keys were shiny. The magpie was the stealer! It made perfect sense to me. So, I set out in search of its nest.
The next problem: As everyone knows, the Grand Canyon is quite large. So I didn't like my chances of actually finding a certain nest belonging to a certain magpie in a certain tree in all that space. But what other choice did I have
My wife was not encouraging. She said, “Are you crazy You'll never find it! The Grand Canyon is the biggest hole on Earth!”
I didn't say a word and marched purposefully onward. I tried hard with hope as I searched dozens of trees and tracked every singing bird. Two hours later, I finally gave up and returned to the car only to find my wife relaxing in a chair, drinking a hot cocoa and wondering why she married me. The next challenge was making out how to get a new key made.

Once upon a time there was a pretty little girl, whose name was Elsa. Elsa's father and mother worked very hard and became rich. They loved Elsa so much that they did not want to have her do any work; they let her play all the time. So when Elsa grew up, she did not know how to do anything but laugh and sing. But she was so sweet that everybody loved her. And by and by, she married one of the people who loved her, and had a house of her own to take care of.
Then came hard times for Elsa! There were so many things to be done in the house, but she did not know how to do any of them! Because she had never worked at all, it made her very tired even to try, and she was tired before the morning was over every day. When the maid saw her mistress(女主人)sitting about doing nothing, she, too, sat about, idle(无所事事)。
Elsa's husband had a hard time because of it. He did not have good things to eat, and they were not ready at the right time, and the house looked all in a mess, which made him sad. Elsa also felt sad, for she wanted to do everything just right. At last, one day Elsa's husband went away. Little Elsa cried bitterly when he was gone, for she did not want to make her husband unhappy, and she wanted the house to look nice. “Oh, dear,” she said sadly, “I wish I could do things right! I wish I had ten good fairies to work for me! Then I could keep the house tidy.”
As she said the words, a great gray man stood before her. He was wrapped in a strange gray cloak(斗篷)that covered him from head to foot and he smiled at Elsa.“What is the matter, dear ” he said. “Why do you cry ”

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles ”
“Oh, yes, but I don't have money on me,” she replied.“That’s nothing. I'll treat you today,” said the man.“Come in. ”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it ” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears.“Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled “Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were n baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her "
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother's familiar face and weathered hands, "Why didn't I think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted. Why haven't I thanked my mum for what she has done for me "
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Fire!
Later that day as the kids Christi, Diana and Zane headed into a town with Mom, they noticed some smoke up ahead. Often they would see clouds of smoke at harvest time, but they never worried about it because they knew that after the farmers harvested their wheat, some of them would start little fires in their wheat fields to burn back the stubble(作物收割后的残茎;茬子) that was left. But as they passed by the smoke, Zane's head swung around.
“Mom,” he shouted. “Look! That wheat field is on fire.”
Mother slowed the car and pulled to the side of the road. Sure enough they could see little red tongues of flames through the smoke. But this was not a stubble fire This fire was at the edge of a wheat field that was ready to harvest and a strong wind was spreading the flames quickly Mom turned the car around and sped up the long driveway to the farmhouse. The kids all stepped out of the car as Mom knocked on the door. There was no answer from within, Mom looked anxiously back at the fire.
“I'm not sure what to do if no one is at home,” she said anxiously.
She knocked again on the door, very loudly this time. Finally they heard hurried footsteps coming toward the door. Mom looked relieved as the door swung open
The lady standing in the open doorway wore a big apron and her hands and arms were all covered with flour and bread dough(面团).
“Oh, I'm sorry it took me so long to come to the door," she laughed, breathless from hurrying. “I'm right in the middle of making a batch of bread, and I was trying to get all this dough off my hands!”
“That's all right,” replied Mom. “We noticed a fire at the corner of your wheat field that is spreading in this wind. We did not know if you had seen it."

I lived life with the belief that if you don't expect much from the world it won't disappoint you, and for a while I was right, And then I met Liam. There was something about the way his uniquely colored green eyes would stare into mine that completely cleared every drop of pessimism I had.
“Cara get up." He whispered in my ear, his face lighting up as I looked up at him. “It's still too early, ”I complained, begging him to allow me five more minutes of sleep, “I have to get to work, honey." He kissed my cheek gently before getting up.
Liam had never been a rich man, but his love was more wealth than I could ever imagine. He'd fill my brain with his fantasy stories of rebirth. Every single night he'd whisper in my ear that we'd be together for all of afterlife and he would always come back for me. Being a Christian, I'd laugh at his fool and roll my eyes.
“Bye, Have fun at work."I answered, he responded with a quick nose sound, then I took myself out of bed and took a shower.
“One missed call." The phone rang at me. I checked my voicemail just in case, one new voicemail.“Hello Cara Foster The unmarried wife of Liam Hensworth I regret to inform you he died in a car crash this evening, please call if you need anything.”I stood dumbfounded as I stared at the screen. Liam dead This must be some sort of mix up; this can't be possible. I must be dreaming.
No, I'm not dreaming. Tears ran down my face as I absorbed the information. How could the world take him away from me My tears turned into full on ugly sobbing.
Three months later my heart still hurts on occasion. Seeing the color of tropical pictures doesn't help either, and the geese in the water only reminds me of him.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying Cows had stopped giving milk. The rivers and streams were long gone back into the earth. It was a dry season that would destroy several farmers before it was through.
Every day, my husband and his brothers would try to get water to the fields. Lately this process had involved taking a truck to the local water rendering plant and filling it up with water. But limits had cut everyone off. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.
It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only wonder I have seen with my own eyes. I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year-old son Billy, walking toward the woods. He wasn't walking with the usual carefree abandon of a youth but with a serious purpose. I could only see his back. He was obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as still as possible
Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. I thought that whatever task he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking toward the woods. This activity went on for an hour: walked carefully to the woods, ran back to the house. Finally I couldn't take it any longer and I stole out of the house and followed him on his journey. He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the water he held in them.
He had a much higher purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site: a tiny baby deer lying on the ground with several large deer standing nearby.

It is the rainy season all over India. In the news we have seen heavy rain hit many parts of the country, which are already flooded(被淹没).We have got used to floods. Children really enjoy the rain and the floods. They love playing with water. Sometimes they jump in the water and are always happy to do it.
However, this year it turned from bad to worse. All schools were closed, and it was announced a holiday by the government the previous day. We stayed indoors and watched life through our windows. Water entered the flats on the ground floor. All the neighbors helped people living there move their belongings and stayed with them. My friends were also staying with me. I was happy because my parents usually don't allow me to stay in a friend's place. But our neighbors were really sad. They had to bear the loss (损失)that the rain brought.
The traffic was cut off by the terrible weather as well. In the morning, the railway system and bus services almost came to a stop. People had to wait for quite a long time at the railway stations and bus stops. My mother, who went by train, arrived three hours late. And finally when she reached her office, it was also announced a holiday. Later, to make the things worse, many trains were cancelled, because the railways were full of water. My mother had to wait in the station for about three hours. Afterwards she decided to go to a friend's house a block away from her office that day, as there was hardly any transportation available to our home. She called to tell us about it. She told me that she walked all the way to her friend's house because she could not get on a bus, and that she was wet through when she finally got there On the phone she sounded very tired.

I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. “Mama, want to play ”“Not today, baby,” I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree. It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I'd never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time with a mate carrying twigs(嫩枝).“Look,Matthew,”I said, pointing to the tree. “They're going to make a nest.”The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. His enthusiasm was influential. As much as I was grieving(悲伤),1 couldn't help but look forward to the doves visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.

The excitement was killing me. My heart was beating faster than the speed of light; I was holding our flight tickets and my suitcase was all packed in the hall and I was ready to go. It was the day... the day I was going to America to spend a long vacation with my cousins. We would be away from London for three weeks.
It was about 5:30 p.m. My mom was doing some chores while my brother Harry and I were watching TV. Everything was nice and peaceful, until mom's phone rang. I was running so fast to pick it up for her, but she had already grabbed it from the table. Without any concern of who it was she accepted the call.
Harry and I were trying to listen, but we couldn't hear anything as the phone's volume was too low. We tried to tell mom, but she looked really worried so we didn't bother much. Harry was so curious to listen. He started giving funny hand signals to mom and they were ignored. Mom was giving us a terrible look after she saw that I was messing with her phone, yet I was so curious to know who it was that I forgot my manners. Anyways, now that everything was in place. I sat down and listened.
That voice... I could recognize it from anywhere... It was my grandma. I was so excited when I heard my grandmother's voice after such a long time. All I wanted to do is just grab the phone out of my mom's hands, but I wasn't so sure if it was the right moment. I looked at my mom and I saw something on her face... it was worry. Something made me feel anxious. I kept listening to see what was going on.

Many years earlier, my mother knew that she could not send me to college and pay for it. She worked in a retail store and made just enough to pay the bills and take care of the other children at home. If I wanted to go to college, it was up to me to find out how to get there.
I found that I qualified for some grants because of the size of our family, my mom's income and my SAT scores. There was enough to cover school and books, but not enough for room and board. I accepted a job as part of a work-study program. While not attractive, it was one l could do. I washed dishes in the school cafeteria.
Just when I thought I was going to drop out of my college career, an angel appeared. Well, one of those that are on earth, without wings. “I heard that you need some help, "he said. “What do you mean ”I asked, trying to figure out which area of my life he meant “Financially, to stay in school.“Well, I make it okay. I just have trouble working all these hours and finding no time to study.”“Well, I think I have a way to help you out.”
He went on to explain that his grandparents needed help on the weekends. All that was required of me was cooking meals and helping them get in and out of bed in the morning and evening. The job paid four hundred dollars a month ,twice the money I was making washing dishes. Now I would have time to study. I went to meet his grandparents and accepted the job.
My first discovery was his grandmother's great love of music. She spent hours playing her old, off-key piano. One day, she told me I didn't have enough fun in my life and took it upon herself to teach me the art. Grandma was impressed with my ability and encouraged me to continue. Weekends in their house became more than just books and cooking, they were filled with the wonderful sounds of the out-of-tune piano and two very out-of-tune singers.

1,One possible version:
Three years later, my dad had completely recovered and decided to do volunteering again. One day he returned to that local children's hospital and went to the room where the sick girl used to stay. Of course, the girl wasn’t there. He felt sad, thinking he would never see her again. Suddenly, the door opened and in walked a girl. It was the girl he had missed so much! She walked straight over to my dad and hugged him tightly. She gave him a picture she had painted with her hands.
In the next hour, the girl told my dad how she became healthy again. She said she never thought she could walk one day. It was my dad's love and encouragement that helped her work wonders. She learned to face her difficulty bravely and kept on practicing walking and painting every day.“Without your love and help, I could never walk again," said the girl thankfully. Now, you see, love can really be more powerful than doctors at times.
2,One possible version:
The doors were all locked from the outside and what's more, I did not have the keys. But luckily, the man forgot to lock the window of the kitchen, Both my brother and I managed to get out of the house through the window and we ran to the nearby police station and asked them for help. The police arrived at our house as soon as possible. And as a result, the man was caught.
Just at the same time our parents came back home. The police asked my family to go to the police station. At the police station the police told us that the man was a wanted robber, who pretended to sell comic books and they had been looking for him for a long time. The police praised my brother and me for our bravery. After we went back home, I told my parents the whole story. They were thankful that we didn't get hurt but they scolded me for not stopping my brother from opening the door to strangers. I learned a lesson on safety and responsibility.
3,One possible version:
Luckily, another family came through the campsite. They said they were going to town. I asked them to send out a repair man to help us. They promised they would. Five hours later, the repair man showed up. Because of the time he spent on the way, he charged me nineteen times as much as the normal amount for making a new key. The next day, we went back home and stopped at A&W for lunch. I pulled out the cup holder in my car, and the key was sitting right there. It was the only place that I didn't search.
I didn't know who put it there-maybe I or maybe my wife. A speechless feeling almost made me crazy. I got out of the car, looked up at the sky, fell to my knees, and raised my hands shouting, “Whyyyyy ” At the same time, my wife seemed to get much happiness from this memory, mainly from enjoying my embarrassment. In the later years, she told and retold this story to many friends. It clearly became a certain kind of pet phrase. When we couldn't find something or neither of us knew who lost it, she simply said, “Go and find the magpie.”
4,One possible version:
“Oh, I am crying because I do not know how to clean the house,” said Elsa. “I cannot do anything right. I wish I had ten good fairies to help me!” “You shall have them, dear,” said the gray man, and he shook his strange gray cloak. Immediately, out came ten tiny fairies.“These will be your servants, Elsa,” said the gray man.“They will do everything you want them to do.”
“Give me your useless hands ,” said the gray man. “I want to hide them to avoid being seen by others.”Elsa stretched out her fingers. The gray man touched each one of the ten little fingers, and said, “The ten fairies are hiding in each of your fingers.”After that, the gray man was gone. Elsa sat and looked at her little white hands and the ten useless fingers. But suddenly the little fingers began to move so that Elsa jumped up and ran to do everything. When the maid saw her mistress working, she began to work, too. Soon, housework was going smoothly, and Elsa could laugh and sing again. Her husband felt so proud of her gradually.

Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house. “Where might my mother be ” she wondered. “Is she really so angry with me that she doesn't want to show me any care ” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother, and she just realized that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head to see the familiar face and the worried eyes.“Here you come! I've been looking for you,” came the tired voice. Jenny couldn't help but throw herself into her mother’s arms. “I'm sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.”She expressed the sincere apology and the great gratitude. Then she felt the hug tightened.

The lady stepped quickly out of the house to look at the fire.“Oh, dear!” she looked alarmed.“No, I had not seen it.”“Someone must have thrown a burning cigarette out of their car window,” said Mom. “I’m sure you are right, ”replied the lady“ I am so thankful you came and told me about it. My husband is out right now, so I'll have to call our neighbors to help me put it out. Thank you so much.”She reached out her hand and, disregarding all the bread dough, gave Mom's hand a quick squeeze. Then she disappeared into the farmhouse.
As they turned and made their way back down the driveway, Christi could see a neighbor’s truck already heading toward the fire. She knew it would not take long to put out the fire now. “We must thank God for your sharp eyes,” said Mom, to Zane. “With the wind blowing, the farmer could have lost the whole wheat crop if we had not noticed the fire in time.”“I'm glad, too!” laughed Zane.

I saw the geese swimming in the water, making whispers to each other, like Liam to me. I remembered the first time when we met. That evening, after work, I rushed to go home, taking no notice of the man standing behind me. We hit heavily, which hurt me much and fell down suddenly. Though the man was also knocked badly, he said sorry to me, standing by me and insisted on sending me home or hospital. From then on, we fell in love. Thinking of this, my eyes were full of tears.
Just then I heard someone calling me. The man came near, but I didn't dare to turn back. As the man approached, he put his hands on my shoulders and made me turn slowly. However, I couldn't see him clearly with tears in my eyes. I couldn’t believe my eyes, it seemed that I was dreaming. My dear! My unmarried husband was standing ahead. In the end, I knew that I recognized the other man as Liam. Liam was dead, so he never came back to life.

The baby deer was tweak probably due to thirst. Billy walked right up to them. I almost shouted for him to get away. Several adult deer were dangerously close. But they did not threaten him. They didn't even move as Billy knelt down. And the tiny baby deer was obviously suffering from heat exhaustion. It lifted its head with great effort to drink the water cupped in my lovely boy's hands.
Soon the water was gone. Billy jumped up to run back to the house to get more water. I hid behind a tree, watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save another life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops and more drops and more. I looked up at the sky. It was pouring. I thought that my son's kind heart moved the Heaven.

That night was so different without my mother at home. I was a bit sad that my mother would not come home that day. Looking out of the window, I could see the drops of rain were huge. It was pouring down into the air. My little sister started crying when she didn't see my mother. My father tried to put her to sleep but in vain. I was so worried: what if mother could not come back home tomorrow
The next day the rain did not stop. The children in our flat went out to float paper boats, while the neighbors stayed at home making cookies by themselves. The main door of the flat was left open; we did everything together. To our relief, my mother finally came back at12:00 by walking. My sister was happy and couldn't help hugging her. This rainy season was so memorable.

I knew I had to do something. The white dove and its mate had given me something to look forward to, even in my darkest days. Now I was going to help them in return. I woke up the following morning with a plan. There was only an hour before the doves usually made their visits. I hammered a shelf into the wall next to the rubber tree and covered it with leaves to make it look like a tree. Then Matthew and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and hoping.
“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced. There they were - sitting on top of the shelf, adding some twigs to the new nest despite damage from the strong wind. Three weeks later, we watched three chicks break free from their shells.“Chirp, chirp!”Matthew sang, I held him close and kissed him, feeling more positive and hopeful than I had in months. I realized all around me, life went on. And it was filled with wonders and surprises that I couldn’t even imagine.

I really wondered what critical meant at that time. But when I saw rivers of tears flowing right out of mom’s eyes, I thought I figured what was happening. The call ended. Everything was quiet. It was just my mom wiping her tears. Harry and I dared not ask any further questions. We both felt very sorry for the pain that mom was going through. Our grandmother was so ill that she was eager to be with her. But we had booked the flight tickets and were leaving for the airport.
She said, “Grandma’s condition is bad. We can't go to America.” That meant our vacation would be cancelled. Harry and I said nothing but we were really regretful for we had planned for the long vacation for a long time. We'd never looked forward to anything like this trip. But compared with grandmother’s health, it was not important. We all love our grandma, who raised us when we were young. How could we leave when she was in a critical condition

When Christmas break came, Grandma got a chest cold, and I was afraid to leave her. I hadn't been home since Labor Day, and my mother was anxious to see me. I agreed to come home, but for two weeks instead of four, so I could return to see Grandma and Grandpa. I said my good byes, arranged for their temporary care and returned home. As I was loading my car to go back to school the phone rang.“Grandma died last night. I'm sorry."I hung up the phone feeling like my world had ended. I had lost my friend, and that was far worse than knowing I would have to return to washing dishes. I went back at the end of four weeks, asking to begin the work-study program again. The financial aid advisor looked at me as if I had lost my mind. I explained my position, then he smiled and slid me an envelope “This is for you,’ he said.
The envelope was from Grandma. She had known how sick she was. In the envelope was enough money to pay for the rest of my college year and a request that I take piano lessons in her memory. Moved to tears, I determined to learn piano lessons by heart and my memory of grandma motivated me to practice day and night. Now, years later, when I walk by a piano, I smile and think of Grandma.
