I’m Gu Ailing Eilleen, a professional freeskier, and twin--tipped skis, 22-foot halfpipes (U型滑道) and double-cork rotations are my main sources of adrenaline (肾上腺素), the truly addictive core of extreme sports.
Though it’s easy to label extreme sport athletes as fearless, the countless hours I’ve spent visualizing tricks and practicing them in foam pits and on airbags suggest otherwise. Instead of ignoring fear, we build unique relationships with it.
The work begins with visualization. I take a deep breath and close my eyes. As I go up the huge takeoff slope, I imagine extending my legs to maximize lift. Then I picture twisting my upper body in the opposite direction I intend to spin, generating force before I allow it to move back the other way.
1440 degrees. I smile. Then I open my eyes.
It doesn’t take much, unfortunately, for uncertainty to override confidence. Imperfect preparation moistens my palms and makes each breath shallower than the last. The feeling isn’t panic, but something like dread. Danger! cries every evolutionary instinct. Every freeskier’s goal is to recognize the minute differences between excitement and uncertainty in order to maximize performance while minimizing the risk of injury.
Finally, there’s pressure, an energy source that can be employed in many ways. I’m proud of the work I’ve done to cope with pressure by improving my self-esteem and minimizing my need for external validation. No matter how much time passes, I’ll always be a hopeless romantic when it comes to fear.

In a series of Instagram posts this week the actress Kate Beckinsale shows her growing friendship with a fox in her mother’s London garden. encouraging him on to her lap by handfeeding him bits of ham and naming him Peepo, It’s as if Beckinsale is auditioning (试演) for alive-action of Snow White, commanding a series of forest animals at her finger tips.
Beckinsale-like pretty much one woman on every urban UK street—is a “fox feeder”. This troubles me. Not because of the old horror stories about city foxes stealing babies from their beds, but because it means that I have to accept that I’m not very cool. Foxes, on the other hand, are. unbelievably cool. They were voiced in Wes Anderson’s stop-motion film Fantastic Mr Fox by the silver fox himself, George Clooney.
To be anti-fox is to be with Dahl’s boring rule-followers. Boggis. Bunce and Bean. To be pro-fox is to be with Ricky Gervais delightedly. filming Foxes partying in his Hampstead garden, or the DJ Annie Mac filming, this summer, a fox strolling into her kitchen from her London patio. The fox takes a cold glance at Mac sitting on the sofa, ignores her, then cuts her shoe before loping off out the door. It was a mint green Nike Air Force 1, retailing at about 100 a pair.
The London Wildlife Trust estimates that there are 10. 000 foxes in the capital. and about half of them sleep in our garden. They have wandered into the house and learnt how to open the lock on our food waste bin by rolling it over and over down the street at 2 am until the lid swings open.

Rahul Aggarwal was in medical school when he got the surprising news that his mother--a fit woman in her 40s--had been diagnosed with type2 diabetes (糖尿病). “I always thought of diabetes as a disease of people at higher weights and with certain lifestyle practices.” he recalls, “but my mom was an Indian American woman with a healthy weight and good diet and exercise practices.”
Aggarwal, now a clinical fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. began thinking about how diabetes seems to affect certain ethnic and racial groups. It quantified diabetes risk in minority groups to determine if current screening recommendations are correct and equal.
The current standard was released in 2021 by the U. S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), which issues evidence-based guidance on disease prevention. The recommendation is to test adults aged 35 to 70 for diabetes if they are overweight or obese, defined as having a body mass index (BMI)of 25 kg/m2 or more. Aggarwal and his cooperators looked at the lowest-risk individuals qualified to screen under that rubric(评价量规). The researchers were shocked to find that the rate was about double for Hispanics and even higher among Black and Asian Americans. They concluded that to detect diabetes equally across all these groups, you would need to test Asian Americans with a BMI of 20 and Black and Hispanic individuals with a BMI of just 18. 5-measures considered to be in the healthy range.
Ngo-Metzger, who was the USPSTFs scientific director from2012to2019, notes that “most studies of diabetes were done in middle-aged white individuals,” She argues that they ‘should be revised. “The study found that you would miss so many Blacks, Hispanics and Asians when you use these guidelines. M: Hello, everybody. Today I’d like to share with you something about John Audubon. John was born on April 26th, 1785. He spent much of his childhood in France, where he spent many hours each day outdoors painting pictures. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States. Well, actually, John began his life in the US as a businessman.
However, instead of taking care of his business, John was often off exploring the nature. At first, John spent his time hunting for fun.
Then he found that the animals around were very beautiful, and he particularly enjoyed observing the birds he saw. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the birds and noticing their different behaviors.
Therefore, he painted the birds he observed a lot. In 1819, John realized that he didn’t have enough money to pay his bills.
He was very upset that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family, so he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his paintings.
