1 How did pineapples, hamburgers and eggplants get their names
1. The name of "pineapple" developed from the Spanish word "pina", with "apple" added to show it's a kind of fruit; the name of "hamburger" came from the idea of "Hamburg steak", and later people reinvented it and called it "hamburger"; eggplants got the name because they used to look like eggs.

教学过程:
一、Pre-reading
1. Greeting
2. Leading-in
The teacher leads the students into the new lesson by reviewing the words "pineapple and basketball".
The teacher can inspire the students to think by asking some questions:
Is there any relationship between "pineapple "and "apple"
Can you eat an apple in pineapple
Can you give me some more examples like this
Can you find the rule of this kind of words
After the warming up, the students must have got the idea of "word formation". Then the teacher explains the meaning of each word formation.
二、While- reading
Abbreviation(缩略法):a word is made up of the first letter of several words.
例如:very important person→VIP重要的人;大人物
Conversion(转化法):to create a new word without any change in spelling.
(1)动词转名词:例如:①Let's go out for a walk. 我们到外面去散散步吧。②He is a man of strong build. 他是一个体格健壮的男人。
(2)名词转动词:例如:①Did you book a seat on the plane 你订好飞机座位了吗?②Please hand me the book. 请把那本书递给我。③We lunched together. 我们在一起吃了午餐。
Compounding(合成法):two or more words are joined together to make a new one. 例如:snow-white; high-class; classroom; eggplant
Derivation(派生法):to create a new word by using prefix(前缀)and suffix(后缀)。例如:appear 出现→disappear 消失;possible 可能的→impossible 不可能的;large大的→enlarge扩大
学生活动:Have a look at Activity 1 on Page 17. Match the words in bold to the types of word formation.

Last summer, I stayed with a British host family. One day, I was really surprised when Jeremy, the son of the family, told me that we would have toad-in-the-hole for dinner. First of all, you should be aware of the importance of reading ability and then do as much as possible. While coming across some unfamiliar words in reading, you'd better not refer to the dictionary frequently but guess the meanings from the context. In addition, you can surf some useful English forums, where you can have a chance to get some useful learning resources and experience more real English culture.
