The Longji Rice Terraces were built by the local Zhuang ethnic group alone. Though there are many large, flat areas in the region, they built terraces on the mountains to have more areas to grow rice. The terraces are cleverly designed, and can wash away the shallow soil. There are hundreds of waterways, along which rainwater moves down the mountains and into the terraces. Today, local people use modern methods to maintain the terraces, and they attract lots of visitors from all over the country.
参考答案
The Longji Rice Terraces were built by the local Zhuang and Yao people. Since there are few large, fat areas of land in the region, they built terraces on the mountains to have more areas to grow rice. The terraces are cleverly designed, and can hold the shallow soil. There are hundreds of waterways, along which rainwater moves down the mountains and into the terraces. Today, local people use ancient methods of agriculture to maintain the terraces, and they attract lots of visitors from all over the country.
学生活动:完成活动5。Work in pairs. Read the passage again and find out the working principle of the Longji Rice Terraces. Then use the picture to retell it in your own words.
The terraces are cleverly designed, with hundreds of waterways that connect with each other. During the rainy season, rainwater moves down the mountains along these waterways and into the terraces. The sun heats the water and turns it into vapour. This forms clouds from which rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again.

1.“介词+which”可以替代关系副词when, where, why
(1)替代when
I'll never forget the day on which (=when) my son was born.我永远忘不了我儿子出生的那一天。(on依据on the day确定)
The year in which (=when) the earthquake happened was2008.发生地震的那年是2008年。(in依据in the year确定)
(2)替代where
This is the farm on which(=where)I used to work.这就是我过去工作过的农场。(on依据on the farm确定)
He forgot the exact place in which (=where) he had hidden the jewelry.他忘记了埋藏珠宝的确切地点。(in 依据 in the exact place 确定)
(3)替代why
I'd like you to explain the reason for which (=why ) you refused my offer.我想请你解释一下你拒绝我的提议的原因。
(for依据 for the reason 确定)
2.依据与先行词的固定搭配确定使用什么介词
I'll never forget the time during which I was with my friends in the country.我永远不会忘记和朋友们一起在乡村度过的时光。 (during依据during the time确定)
I will offer you a better way in which you can do the job.
我会给你提供一个做这项工作较好的办法。(in依据in a better way 确定)
3.依据定语从句中动词或形容词的搭配来确定介词
She bought several clothes, on which she spent all her money.
她买了几件衣服,这些衣服花光了她所有的钱。(on依据spend…on 确定)
It is the grammar rules of which I am not sure.
我没有把握的是语法规则。(of 依据be sure of确定)
4.根据定语从句所表达的具体意思来确定介词
Can you see the river across which there is a bridge
你能看见上面有座桥的那条河吗?
He is swimming in the river, on which there is a boat.
他在那条河里游泳,河面上有一只小船。
5.“介词+关系代词”的其他表达法
(1)如果在whom和which 之前用of表示所属关系(即of whom, of which表示所属关系),这时名词需要特指,应加定冠词,该名词放在of whom, of which之前或之后均可。
I'd like a room the window of which looks out over the sea.
I'd like a room of which the window looks out over the sea.因为whose也表示所属关系,所以可以转换为:I'd like a room whose window looks out over the sea.
(2)在whom和which之前用of,还可以表示部分与整体的关系。这时,表示“部分”的数词或代词,放在of whom, of which 之前或之后均可。
She has three daughters, one of whom is a doctor.
She has three daughters, all of whom are beautiful.
She has three daughters, the oldest of whom is called Mary.
还可以说:
She has three daughters, of whom one is a doctor.
She has three daughters, of whom all are beautiful.
She has three daughters, of whom the oldest is called Mary.
二、While-class
学生活动:完成活动1。
Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the questions.
a .…. they could increase the areas in which they could grow rice.
b .…. these terraces still mean a lot to the local people for whom traditions hold much value.
1 What do "which" and "whom" refer to in each sentence
2 Why do we use prepositions before "which" and "whom"
3 In sentence (a), can we replace "in which" with "where" without changing the meaning
1"Which"refers to "the areas" in sentence (a), and "whom" refers to "the local people" in sentence (b).
2 Because "which" and "whom" serve as the object of the action phrases that end with a preposition.
3 Yes.
Compare them with the following sentences and answer the questions.
c .. they could increase the areas. They could grow crops in these areas.
d ...these terraces still mean a lot to the local people. Traditions hold much value for them.
4 What is the difference between the two groups of sentences
5 Why does the author choose to use sentences (a) and (b) in the reading passage
Now look for more sentences with attributive clauses in the reading passage.
4 Sentences (a) and (b) both contain a clause defining a noun in the sentence. Sentences (c) and (d) are constructed with a pair of simple sentences, with one defining a noun in the other sentence in each pair.
5 Because there is a closer link and connection between the item and the clause defining it in sentences (a) and (b). It will also make the passage clearer, and create an emphatic effect on the objects being defined.
文章中含有定语从句的句子:
But perhaps what is most significant is the way in which people have worked in harmony with nature to make these terraces and grow rice.
This forms clouds from which rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again.
These terraces also provide a perfect environment for birds and fish, some of which feed on insects that can harm the rice crops.
学生活动:完成活动2。Connect the sentences with a preposition + whom /which.
