教师活动：教师让学生阅读P43两篇节选，回答下列问题：
What message is conveyed in the two excerpts
The excerpt from David Copperfield shows the main character's passion for whatever he is doing. The other excerpt from The House on Mango Street introduces the concept of making full use of what we have now.
教师完成下面两个问题：
(1) Which of the excerpts makes you feel like reading the whole book Why
The second excerpt makes me feel like reading the whole book because I think the language the author uses is simple but beautiful. I particularly like her description of the sky keeping us safe when we are sad.
(2) What is your favourite work of literature Why
Of the many works of literature I have read, my favourite by far is The Gadfly by the Irish writer Ethel Voynich. The story takes place during a revolution in Italy in the 19th century. Through a series of exciting events, the hero, Arthur Burton, comes to terms with his identity and becomes a true revolutionary. This book is an amazing coming-of-age story that moved me deeply, and I would recommend it to anyone.

What qualities do you think a great work of literature should have
I think that a great work of literature should be interesting to many people from different countries and cultures. It should be about themes that most people can understand and enjoy. The writing should be creative enough to stir readers' imagination. A great work of literature should stand the test of time so that it can still be enjoyed by people in years to come.
What are some of the benefits of reading literature
Reading literature helps us learn more about our own and other cultures. The power of the words used in literature allows us to experience imaginary situations. Another benefit is that by reading between the lines every reader interprets a piece of literature differently, making it a good topic for discussion.

(1) What does "them" in line 3 refer to
"Them" in line 3 means strange, low, musical sounds.

We need to love literature, and make an effort to explain it.
(3) Why does the author give the example of a poet
To support the idea that some truth and beauty remain unnoticed until a sensitive human soul brings them to our attention.
(4) What is universal about good literature according to the author
Good literature reflects the most basic of human nature — love and hate, joy and sadness, fear and hope.

(1) What does "what it awakens in us" refer to in paragraph 4
It refers to the feelings and imagination that can be stirred by literature in our mind.
(2) What does “permanence" refer to in paragraph 5
Permanence contains two elements: universal interest and personal style. Universal interest refers to the most basic of human nature—love and hate, joy and sadness, fear and hope. Personal style refers to the writer's own life and experiences reflected in his or her works.

We are all influenced by the world around us, regardless of how unique our experiences are. Similarly, a writer is influenced by his or her background—gender, race, natural and social environment will have a huge impact on and be reflected in his or her works. Therefore, the more you know about the writer, the better you can understand the message he or she wants to convey.
(2) What does the author mean by saying "The first step is to determine some of its significant qualities." in paragraph 2
By saying "the first step", the author reminds readers that before we can truly enjoy a piece of literature, it is important to deter mine some of its significant qualities beforehand.
(3) How do you understand the line of the poet Yesterday's flowers am I." in paragraph 3
The literal meaning of this line is that the dead grass may once have been blooming flowers. The poet wants to remind readers of the former glory of a thing, although it is going through a process of decline. A good poet often notices something unnoticed by others and can present it to readers with vivid language.
(4) Try to compare the author's understanding of literature with Ezra Pound's. What do they have in common What are the differences
Both of them think that good literature bears abundant information. The author of this article believes that the information presented mainly describes beauty and truth, records man's thoughts and feelings, and notes down the history of human soul, while Ezra Pound emphasizes literature's nature and form -language with abundant meaning.
7. 学生活动：回答第46页A3的第一个问题。
How is the story of the child and the man related to the topic of literature
The story of the man and the child is similar to the study of literature. The child stands for people who love and enjoy literature, while the man stands for people who make an effort to explain and understand literature. The child is amazed at the sounds he hears through a shell, just as a literature-lover discovers a new world through the study of literature. The shell catches a range of sounds that human ears would have missed, just as great writers bring unnoticed truth and beauty in the world to the reader's attention.

②让学生在文章中找出举例的例句并作出解释。
Sentences giving examples:
A hundred men may pass a field and see only dead grass; but a poet stops, looks deeper, sees truth and beauty, and writes, "Yesterday's flowers am I." One who reads it is capable of seeing the beauty that was hidden from his eyes before.
When Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus asks in the presence of Helen, "Was this the face that launched a thousand ships " he opens a door through which our imagination enters a new world, a world of love, beauty and heroism.
Explanation:
Examples are used to support an argument or explain an idea that may be difficult for readers to understand. The author uses the example of the poet to prove that a sensitive human soul brings something unnoticed to our attention through literature. He uses the quote of Doctor Faustus to help readers understand that literature awakens our memory and imagination.

Some people believe that classics are old and boring and have nothing to do with life today. However, this is not true. For example, Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina can still teach us not to build our own happiness on someone else's pain.

Judge your favourite Chinese work of literature by the three qualities in the article. How does it measure up
My favourite book is Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I think it has the significant qualities of good literature mentioned in the article. First of all, the book reflects the essence of Chinese culture, such as Liu Bei's benevolence and Guan Yu's integrity. Second, as the book is set in the Three Kingdoms period, we read about the ups and downs of the main characters, so their unpredictable fates appeal to our feelings. Third, the most basic of human nature-love and hate, joy and sadness, fear and hope—is well presented in the book. The vow Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei make when they join together as brothers—to save the troubled and to aid the endangered—still has value today. The author, who also lived in an unstable society, witnessed people's suffering and saw their longing for a peaceful life, and reflected his own life and experiences in his novel. All of the points mentioned above make Romance of the Three Kingdoms a well-loved classic that will continue to have a strong impact on generations of readers to come.
