Module 6 Animals in danger

A
Dear sir,
I am doing a project(课题) at school about animals in danger. I think the situation all over the world is really awful(极坏的).
Firstly, I feel so sorry for the giant panda. It's one of the most popular animals in the world. We learned that pandas mainly live on bamboo, and that a panda can eat half its body's weight(重量) of bamboo in 24 hours! That's a lot of bamboo. I think we should try to do more to stop cutting down their forests. We would be so sad if they became extinct(灭绝的) forever(永远).
Secondly, what we should try to protect more is the Chinese alligator(扬子鳄). These creatures(生物) live in some parts of eastern China. They live in freshwater(淡水的) rivers and lakes but the water in some places isn't clean enough for them to live in. It's really dirty in fact. The government should stop factories from polluting the lakes and rivers.
If we protect these beautiful animals in China, more people may come to China to visit our beautiful country, especially to see the quieter areas in the country. Now most visitors just see the cities.
I hope you will encourage(鼓励) more people to think about such an important subject.
Yours,
Huang Jing

All over the world, thousands of animals are used for wildlife tourism. People travel to watch monkey shows, hug baby tigers and swim with dolphins. It might look like fun, but there are reports that animals are hurt now and again. The World Animal Protection(WAP) says that up to 550,000 wild animals are exposed(使遭受) to ill treatment around the world. In Cambodia, for example, it's been reported that elephants have died after carrying tourists for long in hot weather. This is getting attention—over 100 travel companies have promised that they will no longer open up such places. However, some people argue that animal tourism isn't always as bad as it seems. So what do you think
Group Yes·Animals weren't put on this planet for enjoyment. They should be free to live as they choose.·The way animals are treated is often cruel and causes much pain. Even if treated well, they cannot act in the same way as they would in the wild.·We don't need wildlife tourism. We can see animals close up in their natural home in TV programmes. There's no need to disturb(打扰) them in real life. Group No·It is enjoyable and educational for people to communicate with the wonderful animals. The more people know about them, the more they want to protect them.·Wildlife tourism brings money to poor areas and may be the only way for some people to make a living.·Not all animals are treated badly. Some endangered animals are under the protection of programmes that look after rare species(稀有物种).

A shark can smell something in the water, for example, the blood of animals. That helps them find their food. Sharks mainly eat fish, other sharks and plants in the ocean.
Most sharks bite(咬)people by mistake. They think a person is a large sea animal. When the sun goes down or comes up, sharks are looking for food. So at these times people shouldn't go swimming in the ocean.

Many years ago, there were thick forests in Britain, home to many animals. However, they no longer live here. There were wolves, bears and wild cattle. There were less than four million people. They lived in small villages protected by wooden walls from the animals outside.
However, all this changed. Now Britain’s population is up to 66 million. Three-quarters of Britain is fields, towns or cities. Although 25% of land is the countryside, there are fewer birds and small animals than ever before. Britain is one of the few countries in the world without a large wild animal feeding on meat.
Some people want to change this. Some say that Britain needs to become more natural again and suggest trees and plants that once grew in Britain should be allowed to grow again. They even say that people should help large wild animals which have not lived in Britain to return and live wild. They call this “rewilding”.
Not everyone agrees. In the last twenty years, people have planted over one million trees and there are plans for more—but how about wild animals Some people ask if wolves will attack sheep or even humans. They are also angry that rewilding might mean an end to walking in the hills many people enjoy. So far, there are no wolves or bears in Britain’s forests—but soon there might be!
( )1.Why does Britain have fewer wild animals
A.Because people make their living conditions much worse than before.
B.Because their natural enemies are killing them.
C.Because the number of large animals is getting bigger.
D.Because people there don’t like wild animals.
( )2.What does the underlined word “rewilding” probably mean
A.Protecting wild animals.
B.Helping wild animals return to Britain.
C.Planting more green plants.
D.Helping wild animals live better.

North American black bears are shy animals. They are fearful by nature, and will usually run away if they see or hear people. Because of this, it can be difficult for scientists to learn about these animals.
In order to study black bears, researchers from New Jersey, the US, catch bears and use drugs to help them go to sleep. Researchers then work out the size and the weight of the bear, take blood to test for diseases, remove a tooth and take it to the lab to find out its age. From these studies, researchers want to find out how many bears live in New Jersey, how long they live, and how many babies they produce.
But in Minnesota, the US, researchers study bears that are completely awake. The bears know the researchers' voices and they are not afraid of the research team. With the help of a few grapes to keep the bears busy, researchers can touch them to check their hearts, look at their teeth, and do other jobs. Researchers can also walk or sit with bears for hours and make videos to learn about their everyday life.
In both places, the main purpose is the same—to make sure there is a healthy population of black bears. But the research methods and the kinds of information that researchers are able to collect are quite different.

A.can never get close to the bears
B.study the bears while they are asleep
C.use grapes to make the bears full
D.learn a lot about the bears' everyday life
( )5.What do the two studies have in common

B.The main purpose.
C.Research methods.
D.Collected information.
