My sister Cassie and I are twins, but we are quite different. I am quiet and shy while she is
outgoing and popular, and she always tries to help me to get over my shyness.
One day when we were reading in the classroom, I saw our English teacher Mr. Rodriguez
walking into the room. I expected him to come to me, because earlier that day he had said he wanted
to discuss something with me, but he went to Cassie instead and took her out of the classroom. I
was lost in reading and didn’t realize that he never came back for me later.
“Talent show tonight! Starting at six o’clock!” This was broadcast (广播) throughout the halls
as the final bell rang. I wasn’t interested, but it could be fun to watch.
After a quick dinner, our parents drove us to the show. As soon as we got inside the hall, Cassie

“Just hear me out...Mr. Rodriguez saw me in the classroom and thought I was you. I pretended
(假装) to be you. He hoped the wonderful essay (文章) had written, could be read in the talent show.
And I said ‘Yes’ for you. Wait!” She handed me the essay when I was about to angrily say something.
“I didn’t tell you until now because I was afraid that you would be too shy to go on stage. Trust me!
Your essay is great! You can make it!”
Just then, the host called out, “Jessie Davis on now!”
I took one last look at her, took a deep breath and went on stage. As I spoke, my nervousness

Some people say that today, reading is not as important as it was. These days we have
photographs, films, radio and television. Why read a description of something when you can look
at a photograph Why read a newspaper when the latest news is brought to us every hour on radio
and TV
Photography was certainly a wonderful invention. Photographs can give a very clear idea of
places and of people that we have never seen. An encyclopedia (百科全书) , for example, is always
better when it has good illustrations(例证,图解). But we also need words to explain the photographs
and drawings. A photograph of an elephant may give us a very good idea of what an elephant looks
like, but it tells us nothing about the different sorts of elephants there are and where they are found,
their exact size and weight, how they can be useful to man and so on.
In the same way, a good film has action, movement, color, and maybe music. These are things
we do not find on the printed page. But reading a novel has certain advantages over watching even
an excellent feature film. Reading a novel requires imagination. Each of us imagines a story
differently.
Watching news on television can certainly be exciting. But we need newspapers as well. Some
important news stories happen when there are no cameras around. More importantly, a newspaper
does not just report the news. It explains why something has been happening. It also contains
interesting articles on different subjects. Newspapers are an important part of our lives, if we want
to understand what is going on in the places we live as well as in other parts of the world.
Reading is very important for information and pleasure. We need to be good readers to enjoy
6 / 10
a full life as human beings. Reading is a skill and like other skills, it needs practice. The more we
read, the better readers we become. And the better readers we become, the more we enjoy reading!
The secret is to get the reading habit. Read at least a little every day.
45. According to Paragraph 2, photographs can give us __________.
A. enough information about people and places B. no information about things
C. some information about things but not enough D. the wrong information about
things
46. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. Photographs can give better illustrations than words.
B. A newspaper can not only report the news but explain why.
C. No matter when news stories happen, we can take photos.
D. Watching television can get more information than reading newspapers.
47. What does the author think of reading
A. It is a wonderful invention. B. It is an important part of our lives.
C. It requires no practices. D. It is not as important as television.

Forest bathing began in Japan in the 1980s. It is a practice called
shinrin-yoku, which can be translated as “taking in the medicine or air
of the forest”. It has recently grown more popular worldwide. When
people take time in the natural green world to “be” in a fully present
way, research shows many mind-body benefits.
One of the benefits of taking a walk in nature is getting away from screens. When we enjoy
nature, we keep ourselves away from computers or mobile phones. We take a break and allow
ourselves time to get strength and energy back. During forest bathing, we are heightening (增强)
our senses, stopping making quick judgment, and focusing on the “now”.
In fact, forest bathing is also becoming an increasingly popular method of dealing with stress.
Forest bathing has been proven to help those experiencing stressful situations. In one recent study,
people who formed the habits of walking through forests had lowered blood pressure (血压) and
got out of worries.
Meanwhile breathing in forest air increases the level of natural killer(NK) cells (细胞) in our
blood. Our body uses these NK cells to fight illness. One Japanese study showed a rise in the number
and activity of these NK cells by people who forest bathe. Plants and trees in forests can also send
out something called phytoncides. This tree oil can not only protect plants and trees themselves, but
also help people sleep well, lift mood and attention, and boost creativity.
Forest bathing requires a promise to a repeated practice; it’s not a one-and-done quick fix.
Research in England on green spaces showed spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature is
connected with good health and well-being. It doesn’t matter whether you break up the two hours
into shorter walks in a local park filled with lots of trees or an afternoon in a forest.
Taking a speedy walk through nature and rushing through the activity to get back to work, let’s
say, may not be as effective. Nor is it advised to play loud music as you walk.
Forest bathing shows a different way of life. You are walking through nature in a forest and
taking your time. You are noticing your feelings and starting more of a relaxing and meaningful life.

A. Improve. B. Examine. C. Control. D. Require.

书面表达(共 20 分)
八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共 10 分,每小题 2 分)
What is peer pressure(压力) People who are the same age as you, like your classmates, are
called peers. When they try to influence(影响)you to act, or to make you do something, it’s called
peer pressure. Everyone has to deal with(处理)it, even the older people.
The influence of peer pressure
Peers can have a good influence on each other when they are encouraged to do something
positive or pushed to grow in a beneficial way. You might admire (羡慕) a friend who is always
good at sports and try to be more like him or her. Maybe you want to make others excited about
your new favorite book, and now everyone’s reading it.
On the other hand, sometimes peers influence (影响) each other in bad ways. Negative peer
pressure involves (包含) pressure to do something dangerous or damaging to themselves or others.
For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them when you should study
at school or a kid in the neighborhood might want you to shoplift (在商店行窃) with him.
Why do people give in (屈服) to peer pressure
Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, or because they worry that
other kids may laugh at them if they don’t go along with the group. Others may go along because
they want to try something new. The idea that “everyone has to do it ” may influence some kids to
leave their common sense (常识)behind.
How to walk away from peer pressure
Choose your friends wisely. If you choose friends who don’t smoke cigarettes, or lie (说谎),
then maybe you won’t do these things either.
8 / 10
Even if you have peer pressure while you’re alone, there are still things you can do. You can
be away from peers who pressure you to do something wrong. You can say “no” to them and walk
away.
At last, if you go on to have peer pressure and you’re finding it difficult to deal with, talk to
someone you depend on.
