1.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Mary frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
“Moving here was a stupid idea. I have lost all my friends in San Francisco. What should I do now ” Mary grumbled (抱怨) , mostly to herself.
“What’s that ” Her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots and a wok (锅).
“Nothing,” Mary mumbled. The girl had been complaining about the move but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed like the students hadn’t even noticed her. Mary sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening, Mary’s parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Mary was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Mary’s age. As she filled their glasses, Mary realized the twins were in her class. Mary ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Mary’s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher. “Honey, what are you doing back here We need you out front with the customers.”
Paragraph 1:

【答案】One possible version:
“Mom, I don’t want to be out there. There are kids from school!” Mary frowned. Feeling Mary was in a bad mood, her mother asked her what was wrong in a soft voice. At that moment, Mary couldn’t help pouring out her troubles, “Without a friend, I’m isolated here.” Realizing she had ignored Mary’s feelings after the move, her mother held Mary in her arms, suggesting that she make new friends by taking action first. “Go and take them some cookies and say hello!” The instant Mary heard that, her eyes shone with a mixture of excitement and expectation. (87w)
Mary put a handful of cookies into a small tray and left the kitchen. Nervous as she was, she plucked up courage to approach the table where the twins sat, placing the cookies down carefully. She bravely looked at the girls directly in the eyes, “Thanks so much for coming to our restaurant!” It was not until the twins looked up that they recognized her. The twins gave her a big hug. They offered to hang out with her and introduce her around to the other guys at school. “That would be awesome!”, Mary grinned.

2.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
As children, my brothers and I constantly annoyed our mother. When we combined forces, we had the power to make that sweet, loving woman go mad.
One day, I arrived home from school feeling overheated, exhausted, and angry with my brothers for being kicked out of the car and walking home alone. Taking a few steps inside, I dropped my books and realized the house was a little too quiet. Looking around, my anger turned to weariness, and suddenly I felt a fierce stream of water glide (滑动) across my shirt. Before I realized what happened, another blasted(轰炸) me directly in the face. I dove behind the couch as I heard my brothers yell, “Water fight!”
Running to the other side of the room where my own water gun was hidden beneath a loose floorboard, loaded and ready to go, I grabbed it and congratulated myself on being prepared in advance.
Instantly, my anger with my brothers disappeared, and I eagerly joined in the water spraying. We didn’t stop until we were nearly wet all over and out of water. Calling a truce (休战), we decided to team up and take on a larger, more dangerous enemy. While taking turns reloading our weaponry, we hatched(策划)our plan.
Our mother was outside watering the garden, totally unaware of the danger approaching her from behind. We silently counted to three and began showering her with water. She turned around and stood still as we finished the last of our supply. Only when she thought our guns were empty did she dare to speak a word. However, when she began to lecture us, a water ‘bullet’ shot from my gun, smacking(猛击) her right eye, and she lost her temper.
We ran to the living room with our mother close behind and barely reached the door in time to shut her out. She began pounding on it and shouting at us to let her in, but we had no idea that this was all an act. She actually had her own plan.

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
She decided to hatch her own plan. She pretended to go back to water the garden. We refilled our guns and decided to keep the trick going. We would take turns slightly opening the door, spraying her, and then quickly shutting and re-locking it. Every time, she would play the angry mother role, but inside she was calmly waiting for an opening. Our confidence grew as we successfully sprayed her. We would leave the door open for longer periods each time, laughing at her.
Paragraph 2:
When we left the door open for too long, she took action. With the water pipe in hand, she swiftly flew through the door and sprayed us and the entire living room. Under the strong water, my brothers and I were too shocked to move and had to give in. My mother said calmly, “When you attack others, you should be prepared to withstand stronger attack. Now, the game is over. It’s time for you to clean up the battlefield.”

After filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I look what I could get—a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was dive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen—teaching English.
School started, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class—seventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love for the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounds reasonable, but the text evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my task master known to be the strictest most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly victorious that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period I had to face him.

【答案】Para 1:
After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath, and opened the door. My boss was sitting in his chair with a hardened face, gazing at me long and hard. Anxious and ashamed, I said nothing, wondering if he would fire me right away. He handed me an envelope, which definitely added more anxiety to me at that moment. However, my eyes went wide open when I opened it and read the letter. It was not an unemployment letter but a letter with several suggestions about my teaching, one of which was highlighted in red: An educator should respect students, feelings. Almost immediately, a warm glow of emotion rose inside me. As I went out of the office, I made up my mind to change my attitude.
Para 2:
Inspired by his advice, I walked towards the classroom, determined to make a change. As the bell rang, I stood on the platform, eyes wandering across the classroom. The students seemed to expecting another boring and dull English lesson, some dropping their eyes and some whispering in the back rows. I cleared my throat and announced, “Boys and girls, let’s begin with your voice about my literature lesson.” Suddenly, a complete silence fell over. Each lifted his heads and cast me a puzzled look. Flashing a smile, I encouraged, “Anything you’d like to say!” At this, the students got stirred up. The class soon amazingly came to life thanks to their brilliant voices, which brought me to what my strictest boss enlightened me: respecting the students instead of ignoring them will make a difference.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station where the forester worked.
Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel—no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Steve inside.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Without any thought of endangering myself, I rushed into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt. Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Steve was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sitting in the cold air and wondering how to get out of the forest.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Steve and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was on this trip that Steve began to treat me more like a friend and equal, rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.

For as long as I could remember, the small cottage on Castro Street had been home. Every Saturday night, Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home.
“For the rent. Mama would count out the big silver pieces.
“For the groceries.” Another group of coins.
“I’ll need a notebook. That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.
Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with anxious interest. At last, Papa, with a pipe in his mouth, would ask, “Is that all ” And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little. Mama would look up and smile, “Good. We do not have to go to the Bank.” Mama’s Bank Account was a wonderful thing. We were all so proud of it. It gave us such a warm, secure feeling. Neighbors we knew, even our landlady, had no account in a big bank downtown.
When the Jensens down the street were driven out by their landlady because they couldn’t pay the rent, I was choked with sudden fear. Could that happen to my family “We have a bank account.” Mama comforted me in a calm voice, and suddenly I could breathe again.
When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. “It will cost a little money,” he said. Eagerly we gathered around the table. I took out a box and laid it carefully in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank”. It was used for sudden emergencies, such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to be taken to a doctor. Nels listed the costs of the things he would need. Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough. “We do not want to draw (提取)the money,” she reminded. We all shook our heads. “I will work in Dillon’s grocery after school,” Nels volunteered.

Alan and the other campers sat around the fire chewing meat chops. It would be Alan’s first night in a tent, and he was excited but a little nervous.
As they ate, the conservation officer spoke. “Much of the wildlife in this area comes out only at night. So after supper, let’s start a night watch. Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a world that many of you never knew existed.”
Alan’s stomach tightened.
“Isn’t it dangerous ” someone asked.
“No, it’s quite safe,” the officer said.
“There are no dangerous animals this close to Cape Town. Any volunteers ”
A tough-looking kid with red hair muttered something about needing a good night’s sleep.
Another boy spoke up. “I’ll take a shift.” The kid who’d sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered. Alan sat tight. Then one of the girls raised her hand with a giggle.
Alan frowned. If a girl could do it, he could, too. He volunteered.
A few more kids raised their hands, and then the officer explained, “This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed, the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of watcher is to keep the fire going gently. After thirty minutes, he or she wakes the next person.”
Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe ”
The officer looked at him. “Well, nothing is absolutely safe. Crossing the road isn’t absolutely safe. But the danger is minimal. We wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer ”
Alan nodded but felt uneasy. Sleeping in a tent with other campers had sounded OK, but the idea of being alone in the night made him tremble.
Earlier that day, the officer had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river. That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not. Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird swooping(俯冲) and wondered if it was an owl. He had seen small paw prints in the sand by the river. Was the owl hunting for the creature that had made them

【答案】Then there was a noise. Alan froze. Some thing was there in the darkness. Slowly, he reached for his flashlight. Another metallic sound, near the cooking pots. Alan's finger stabbed at the button on the flashlight. There, with a discarded bone in its mouth, was a creamy-brown creature with dark spots and a striped tail. Alan stared, and the creature stared back, its round ears pricked and its sharp nose twitching. Then it was gone Alan felt a rush of excitement. He crawled near the pots and saw small dog-like paw prints. Carefully, he rearranged the pots to cover them.
The next morning, the officer asked for reports. Most kids claimed to have heard noises in the darkness “I saw something,” said Alan, and he described it. Then he moved the pots and showed everyone the tracks . “Well done! You' ve met our local spotted genet, ” said the officer, smiling. "Normally a genet lives on mice and birds, but this one likes chop bones, too. He visits our campsite some times, but only if the watcher is very quiet. Good for you! ”Alan held his head high. Inside, though, he knew it was fear that had kept him so quiet. Next time, he thought, I will be just as quiet, but no longer afraid.

二、概要写作
8.阅读下面短文, 根据内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
There are many benefits of public transportation. For example, public transportation makes it easier for people to get where they want and need to go. It also helps people save money, as the cost of maintaining a working vehicle is often much more than the cost associated with public transportation. The frequency of traffic jams and accidents may also be reduced when a person uses public transportation.
One of the main benefits of public transportation is the fact that it makes it easier for people to get around. Without public transportation, many people — especially those without cars — would be limited in where they could go and what they could do. With public transportation, however, people can get to school and work, get to the grocery store and to doctors’ offices, and visit relatives, even if they do not own vehicles. Public transportation serves people of all ages and from all walks of life, ranging from families, including their children, to business people on their way to the office, to the elderly.
Often, people complain about the cost of public transportation when the rates are raised. When compared to the cost of buying a car, many people find that choosing to ride public transportation is a much cheaper option.
When public transportation is available, many people choose to use it instead of driving to work and school. This is true even of many people who own cars, as they may prefer to ride to work on a bus or train rather than deal with traffic jams and parking frustrations each day. When people make this choice, the result is less traffic on the roadways, which means fewer traffic jams and less pollution. In fact, the choice many people make to ride public transportation may even translate into fewer car accidents and vehicle-related deaths and injuries. Additionally, the use of public transportation also means less gas is consumed each year.

读后续写精选(原卷版)

After filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I look what I could get-a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was dive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen-teaching English.

“Mamma,” said Susie Dean, one summer's morning, “may I go to the woods, and pick berries ”
“Yes,” replied Mrs Dean, “but you must take Rover with you.”
Susie brought her little basket and her mother put up a nice lunch for her. She tied down the cover, and fastened a tin cup to it
The little girl called Rover-a great Newfoundland dog and gave him a tin pail to carry. “If I bring it home full, mamma,” she said. “Won’t you make some berry cakes for tea ”

Rover ran about, chasing a squirrel or a rabbit now and then, but never straying (偏离)far from Susie.
The tin pail (锡桶)was not a very small one. By the time it was two thirds full, Susie began to feel hungry, and thought she would eat her lunch.

“There ’ Rover, run away! There's a good dog.” she said; but Rover staid near her, watching her steadily with his clear brown eyes.

But good, faithful Rover was hungry, and she had not given him even one piece of meat She tried to forget how selfish she had been; but she could not do so, and quite early she started for home.
