I learnt to swim when I was a teenager. I went to the local swimming pool with my two sisters. It was old and cold and not very nice. I can still remember my instructor: his name was Colin Firth, like the actor. But he wasn't as good-looking!
-Rachel Robbins
My father was a swimming instructor so I guess it’s just in the blood. I can’t remember a time when I couldn’t swim. I spent most of my childhood holidays at the beach and I still go at any opportunity I get.
-Simon Fordham
It took me a long time to learn. I wasn’t a natural. I still don’t swim very well. I certainly wouldn’t like to be in a boat in rough(汹涌的) seas. I never really learnt to put my face in the water. It hurts my eyes and I can’t see.
-Geoffrey Hopkins
One day I was standing by the deep end of the swimming pool and I suddenly fell in. I don’t know how I did it but I managed to get to the side. I was coughing but I could swim! My brother saw me when I got out and thought it was very funny. But he didn’t laugh when I hit him.
-Karen Marks
My first experience of swimming was when I was 8 or 9 years old. I was on a small boat with about ten other boys. It was very small and someone pushed me in the water. The water was very clean and I could see everything. I remember feeling very peaceful and comfortable, and I wasn’t worried at all. I started swimming, not very well, but another boy helped me to return to the beach.

When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guang Dong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive (敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description (描述) “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.

“I'm going to fail!"My best friend cried. She and I had this conversation almost every day while we were in high school.
The truth was that my friend never failed in any subjects. I just think that she can't accept failures because she lives her life as a perfectionist What she fails to understand is that a lot of good can come from failures.
For example, failure can help build relationships. Once was cooking dinner for a friend. I was tired, and several dishes I tried to make turned out bad. I grew more and more upset until my friend told me that I shouldn't worry. She cared more about our friendship than the dishes. That day, I learned that failure doesn't always make people dislike you. In fact, after she said those words to me, I grew closer to her.
Failure can make success ever more exciting. Every few years, there would be an important test in the PE class at our school. Students had to run a mile within eight minutes. I was never good at running, so I failed every time until the third year at school. Then I began working out regularly, and yet I still failed that year. A few days later, however, the teacher gave me and some other students another chance to run and I got a pass finally! You can 't imagine how excited I was after that. I felt the memory of the success was as sweet as honey, because I had to overcome failure to reach it.
Now its clear to see that failure can teach us good lessons. It's not an end—it can be a beginning.
8.What can we learn about the author's best friend from the first two paragraphs
A.She liked taking tests.
B.She often failed in study.

9.What did the author finally get from a failed cooking
A.Bad feelings. B.Worries. C.More experience. D.A closer friendship.
10.Why did the author feel excited after the running test
A.Because she achieved success after many failures.
B.Because she received honey as a reward.
C.Because she got another chance to take the test.
D.Because she could work out regularly.
11.The author wrote this passage________.
A.to show the negative effects of failures
B.to encourage the readers to face failures bravely
C.to point out her best friends fear of failures
D.to introduce different types of failures

Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table, reading his book. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to copy him in every way he could.
One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I try to read the book just like you, but I don’t understand it, and I forget what I understand as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the book do ”
The grandpa quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”
The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandpa laughed and said, “You’ll have to move a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned. Out of breath, he told his grandpa that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, so he went to get a bucket instead. The grandpa said, “I don’t want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You’re just not trying hard enough.” The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandpa the basket was empty again. Out of breath, he said, “Grandpa, it’s useless!”
“So, you think it is useless ” the grandpa said, “Look at the basket.”
The boy looked at the basket and for the first time he realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean.
“Grandson, that’s what happens when you read the book. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you’ll be changed, inside and out.”
12.What puzzled the grandson most was _________.
A.why he forgot what he read soon B.what kind of book he could understand

根据文章第二段“My father was a swimming instructor so I guess it’s just in the blood.(我的父亲是一个游泳教练,因此我猜这是与生俱来的。)”
根据文章第三段“I certainly wouldn’t like to be in a boat in rough(汹涌的) seas. I never really learnt to put my face in the water. It hurts my eyes and I can’t see.(当然,我也不喜欢在汹涌的海上呆,即使是在船上。
根据文章倒数第二段“My brother saw me when I got out and thought it was very funny. But he didn’t laugh when I hit him.(我哥哥看到我从水里爬出来觉得很好笑。
4.B 5.D 6.C 7.A
由第二段中的“I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly.”(我告诉她,我确保他们很快得到食物,因为我总是尊重老人。)
由第三段中的“In my village in China, people are proud of being old.”(在我们中国的村子里,人们都以年老为荣。)
由最后一段中的“After that, I changed the way I had been with older people.”(从那以后,我改变了以前和老年人相处的方式。)
由第二段中的“My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive (敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description (描述) “old”.”(我的经理碰巧听到了我的话,他把我拉到一边,给我讲了很长一段时间,说美国人是多么敏感,他们多么讨厌“老”这个词。) 故选A项。
8.C 9.D 10.A 11.B
根据第二段的“I just think that she can't accept failures because she lives her life as a perfectionist.(我只是觉得她无法接受失败因为她过着完美主义者的生活。)”
根据第三段的“She cared more about our friendship than the dishes. That day, I learned that failure doesn't always make people dislike you. In fact, after she said those words to me, I grew closer to her.(比起盘子,她更在乎我们的友谊。
根据倒数第二段的“I was never good at running, so I failed every time until the third year at school....A few days later, however, the teacher gave me and some other students another chance to run and I got a pass finally! 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段的“Now its clear to see that failure can teach us good lessons. It's not an end—it can be a beginning.(现在很明显,失败可以给我们很好的教训。
12.C 13.B 14.D 15.A
根据第二段最后一句“What good does reading the book do”可知,孙子不明白读书的意义所在,所以选B。
根据倒数第一段最后一句中的“when you read it, you’ll be changed, inside and out”可知,读书能让人从里到外地发生变化。
故选A。
The best title for the text would be... / What can be the best title for this text / Which of the following can be the best title for the text 等。
16.F 17.A 18.B 19.E 20.G
16.前文“Write it down.”(写下作业。)和后文“Always be sure to write down all the homework so you won’t forget anything.”(一定要把所有的作业都写下来,这样你就不会忘记任何东西。)
告诉读者要为写作业制造一个独立的空间;后文“It will take twice as long to get the homework done.”(完成作业需要两倍的时间。) 故选A项。
18.前文本段主旨句“Do homework as early as possible.”(尽可能快去写作业。)
19.后文“Think about how long it will take you to complete homework for each subject.”(想想你要花多长时间才能完成每个科目的家庭作业。)
20.前文“You can easily get tired by sitting through an hour or two of homework without stopping.”(坐着完成一两个小时的作业而不停下来,你很容易感到疲劳。)
21.A 22.C 23.D 24.B 25.A 26.B 27.A 28.D 29.B 30.C 31.A 32.C 33.B 34.D 35.C
根据第一段第一句的“but in the past two years I have really changed.”
