Life is different in Anchorage, Alaska, at the beginning of March. Every year at this time, the downtown streets become crowded with people. But these are not just regular pedestrians. In addition to the people walking through the streets, there are hundreds of dogs. It is time for the Iditarod—the famous dogsled race of Alaska.
The name of the race comes from the name of an Alaska gold rush town, Iditarod. It means “distant” or “distant place.” It comes from one of the languages of native Alaskans.
More than sixty sled teams begin the race in Anchorage. When the teams reach the outskirts of town, they get a taste of Alaska’s wilderness. For about two weeks, they will ght the unbearable cold, wind, snow, and ice to nish the race. The temperature on the trail is often well below zero degrees.
The Iditarod trail stretches for about a thousand miles. It has many rendezvous points. At these meeting places, race teams “check in” to let of cials know how they are doing. Some teams get into trouble along the way. Of cials will stop them on the trail and give them the help they need. For example, of cials might stop a team’s progress to give rst aid or to collect an injured or tired dog. These dogs are cared for and reunited with their owners after the race.
The Iditarod trail is an important part of Alaska’s history. A part of the trail was used by some heroic dogs and humans in 1925. In Nome, Alaska, many people were catching the deadly disease diphtheria. The whole town was in quarantine, or isolation, in order to stop this disease. The only way to get medicine to Nome was by dogsled. About twenty “mushers,” or dogsled drivers, offered to help. They wanted to save the people of Nome from this terrible trouble.
Today the Iditarod race honors this heroic journey and all of the journeys on the famous trail. As the race organizers say, the Iditarod is “the last great race on Earth.”
51. Which of the following is TRUE about the Iditarod race
A. It is held every year in the downtown streets in Anchorage.
B. It usually lasts about two weeks in freezing cold weather.

52. In the race, it’s possible for a seriously injured dog _____.
A. to finish the race unnoticed B. to meet its owner again
C. to work for a new owner D. to get timely treatment
53. When a town is in quarantine (in paragraph 4), people in the town _____.

C. are not allowed to go out freely D. will be remembered as heroes
54. The passage is mainly about _____.
A. a dogsled race of Alaska B. life in Alaska

Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth
Introduction
Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past nine years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organisations in Africa, Latin America and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned.
Background
Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but to a combination of factors: a lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, urban crime.
Street Business Partnerships
S.K.I. has worked with partner organisations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop
innovative opportunities for street children to earn income.
● The S.K.I. Bicycle Courler Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages.
● The Youth Skills Enterprise initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit.
Lessons learned
The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organisations have created.
It is critical for all loans to be linked to training programs that include the development of basic business and life skills.
Small loans are provided initially for purchasing fixed assets such as bicycles, shoe shining kits.
All S.K.I. programs have charged interest on the loans, primarily to get the business runners used to the concept of paying interest on borrowed money. Generally the rates have been modest.
Conclusion
There is a need to recognize the importance of access to credit for poor young people seeking to fulfill economic needs...
55. The organization, S.K.I., aims to __________.
A. provide schools and social support for street children
B. give business training and loans to street children
C. share the lessons S.K.I learned to help street children
D. draw the attention of the government to street children
56. According to the passage, what is the most probable reason why children end up living on the street
A. Unemployment. B. Adventurous play. C. Urban crimes. D. Poverty.
57. This passage implies that with the help of S.K.I street children may __________.
A. reject paid employment B. leave their families
C. set up their own business D. employ other children

The coast of the State of Maine is one of the most irregular in the world. A straight line running from the southernmost coastal city to the northernmost coastal city would measure about 225 miles. If you followed the coastline between these points, you would travel more than ten times as far. This irregularity is the result of what is called a drowned coastline. The term comes from the glacial(冰川的)activity of the Ice Age. At that time, the whole area that is now Maine was part of a mountain range that towered above the sea. As the glacier descended, however, it applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.
As the mountains sank, ocean water charged over the lowest parts of the remaining land. And the highest parts of the former mountain range, nearest the shore, remained as islands. Marine fossils found here are 225 feet above sea level indicating the level of the shoreline prior to the glacier.
The 2,500-mile-long rocky and jagged coastline of Maine keeps watch over nearly 2,000 islands. Many of these islands are tiny and uninhabited, but many are home to blooming communities. Mt. Desert Island is one of the largest, most beautiful of the Maine coast islands left behind by the glacier. Measuring 16 miles by 12 miles, Mt. Desert was very nearly formed as two distinct islands. It is split almost in half by Somes Sound, a very deep and very narrow stretch of water seven miles long.
For years, Mt. Desert Island, particularly its major settlement, Bar Harbor, has afforded summer homes for the wealthy. Recently, though, Bar Harbor has become a new arts community as well. But the best part of the island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park. Since the island sits on the border between two different geographical zones, the park supports the plants and animals of both zones. It also lies in a major bird migration lane and is a resting spot for many birds.
The establishment of Acadia National park in 1916 means that this natural monument will be preserved and that it will be available to all people, not just the wealthy. Visitors to Acadia may receive nature instruction from the park naturalists as well as enjoy camping, hiking, cycling, and boating. Or they may choose to spend time at the museum learning about the Stone Age inhabitants of the island.
58. The large number of small islands along the coast of Maine is the result of __________.
A. the drowning of the Maine coastline B. glacier’s forcing mountains into the sea
C. the irregularity of the Maine coastline D. ocean water’s flooding the mountain range
59. From the passage, we learn that __________.
A. the coastline of Maine is ten times longer after the Ice Age
B. there are more than 2,500 islands along the Maine coastline
C. Mt. Desert Island has been broken apart by a 7-mile-long water stretch
D. an arts community gave way to the summer homes on Mt. Desert Island
60. What CANNOT be inferred about the Acadia Nation Park
A. It welcomes all the people, rich or poor.
B. It has much appeal for bird-watching lovers.
C. It offers visitors both entertainment and education.
D. It is a border between the two geographical zones.
61. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A. The past and the present of Maine B. The formation of Maine coastline
C. Efforts for preserving national parks D. Tourist attractions on Mt. Desert Island
D
The Cathedral of Augsburg in the Bavarian region of German is credited with the world’s oldest stained glass windows from the 12th century. Originally constructed in the 9th century, this Romanesque style church is a short 40-mile drive north of Munich.
These windows are typically found in churches and were first made for this purpose. Natural light is used to light the stained glass window in order to help tell the story described by the church. The illustrations (图示) on each window appear to be alive with the natural light which is result of God’s symbolic presence. Each design told a story from the Bible or of an important individual in history in pictures, rather than words since most people could not read. Visitors who wanted to learn more about the exciting story being told in the stained glass window could ask the guide of monks for more details.
The Renaissance (文艺复兴)which began in the late 13th century saw the usage of stained glass windows expand from churches to other public buildings. However, many of the medieval (中世纪) era windows were removed during the 18th century as they were viewed to be old and replaced with painted glass. The former half of the 19th century saw the Gothic Revival movement in England where artists made new bathroom stained glass windows in the medieval style for new Gothic buildings. These Gothic works were used to decorate churches by replacing the simple painted glass ornamental windows that had crept into churches.
John LaFarge and Louis Comfort Tiffany took the lead in the American glass movement in the late 19th century, when they made stained glass windows. LaFarge and Tiffany were American painters, who worked independently at first and then competed with each other. Harvard University’s Memorial Hall, Boston’s Trinity Church, and New York City’s Judson Memorial Church are some of Lafarge’s most famous works. In 1879, it was Tiffany who became a leading figure within the American glass movement.
Today, stained glass is used in homes as an accent for windows not only for light, but to match artwork that allows light to shine through. Some will even hang a frame of stained glass on a blank wall for decoration. As history has shown, the usage of these works has developed from just churches to public buildings and then to private homes.
62. The world’s oldest stained glass windows came out ________.
A. in the 12th century in Italy B. in the 9th century in Germany

In her book, Teaching a Stone to Talk, Annie Dillard reveals a sad, but affecting story about what happens when we set out unprepared. She tells of a British Arctic expedition that set sail in 1845 to chart the Northwest Passage around the Canadian Arctic to the Pacific Ocean. Neither of the two ships and none of the 138 men aboard returned.
Captain Sir John Franklin prepared as if they were going on a pleasure cruise rather than a tough journey through one of earth's most horrible environments. He packed a 1,200-volume library, a hand-organ(大型手摇风琴), china place settings for officers and men, cut-glass wine goblets (高脚杯) and silver cutlery (餐具), all beautifully designed. Years later, some of these place settings would be found near a clump of frozen bodies.
The voyage was doomed when the ships sailed into cold waters and became trapped in ice. First, ice coated the decks, then water froze around the rudders and the ships became hopelessly locked in the forzen sea.
Sailors set out to search for help, but soon gave in due to severe Arctic weather and died of exposure as a result of the harsh winds and sub-zero temperatures. For some twenty years, remains of the expedition were found all over the frozen landscape.
Neither did the crew prepare for the cold nor for the eventuality(不测事件) of the ships becoming ice-locked. On a voyage that was to last two to three years, the packed only their Navy-issue uniforms and the captain carried just a 12-day supply of coal for the auxiliary(辅助的) stream engines. The frozen body of an officer was eventually found, miles from the ship, wearing his uniform of fine blue cloth, edged with silk braid, a blue greatcoat and a silk neckerchief—clothing which was noble and respectable, but wholly inadequate.
Historians may doubt the wisdom of such an ill-prepared journey. But more important for us is the question: Are we, too, prepared for the lengthy voyage we've embarked upon, that journey we call “life”? Have we made ourselves ready for all that surely await us
Physically and mentally, are we prepared to handle what may come Do we stay fit through daily study and exercise Will our minds and bodies be ready to cope with the challenges that arise
Emotionally and spiritually, are we ready Do we practice such virtues as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, goodness and self-control?Will we be emotionally and spiritually ready to embrace an unknown future
To embark on a journey unprepared can set one up for disastrous results. But the good news is that we can still prepare for our journey. And, in large part, the success of our voyage will be determined by our regular and systematic preparation.

Dear Jerry,
According to your description, I realize that you and your teacher both are to blame for the conflict. As for you, I recognize two factors that may contribute to this unpleasant thing. First and more important, you are regarded as a trouble-maker and always annoy your teacher. Besides, there is a high possibility that you came up with your new opinion in an improper tone, which may also upsets your teacher. For your teacher, he shouldn’t be too narrow-minded to accept one’s different opinion. A teacher should be much more kind and patient.
As far as I am concerned, you’d better make an apology to your teacher for annoying him before and show him your proper respect to him and your desire to learn something from him. There’s no problem to ask for an explanation of something you don’t understand, but we should learn to handle this in a more appropriate way. Only in this way can you live a more harmonious school life. (146)
Best wishes,
Bruce
