The children stormed out like soldiers going into battle. For a time Mother was left to the quiet of her room and the ache in her head.
Then Father arrived home. He stepped into the bedroom and reached for her hand. He looked tired. Mother started worrying about him. “It’s nothing, darling,” she said. “I can get up and do dinner and…”
Father shook his head, “The kids and I will take over. We’ll get along fine without you.”

4．Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage — I carried an 85-pounder (85磅重的南瓜) back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed (封闭的) space.

Modern houses are extremely narrow for room, but it was better than nothing. In any case, it was a significant improvement over our prior home, which was much smaller than the new one.
The kitchen was the first area we started organizing things. We needed to take care of our stomach before we could do any more work, so my mother set about creating her first meal in her brand-new kitchen, preparing the greatest tasting instant lunch I’d ever tasted.
We moved on to the rest of our belongings after lunch. My parents got the largest bedroom, my grandmother and sister got the second largest, and I got the tiniest, right close to the kitchen. I was totally overjoyed. For the first time in my life, I got my own room, and it even had a ceiling fan to keep me cool.

I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. We hung all that weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him.
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. Graduation day was around the corner. As the top student of our class, Kyle was to deliver a speech on the graduation day. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I patted him on the back and said, “Hey, don’t worry. You’ll be great!” He looked at me and smiled. I knew that we would always be friends.
