Twelve years ago, Danny called me from a dark, damp subway station. “A baby!” he shouted. “Get
down here, and flag down a police car or something.” By nature, Danny is a very calm person, so when I

Soil creates life from death. The production of more than 95% of the food we eat relies on soil. But this
precious resource is eroding (侵蚀) at a global average of 13.5 tons per hectare per year. Instead of nourishing
crops, fertile topsoil is washed and blown away, ending up in inconvenient places such as ditches and oceans.
Jo Handelsman and Kayla Cohen try to make readers care about soil in A World Without Soil. Their
prologue (前言) takes the form of a letter to the government. With the letter, they hope to make soil
management a federal priority. The following chapters cover the basic science of soil as well as the causes
and consequences of its erosion. In the last part of the book, the authors turn to possible solutions—many of
them simple, and some centuries old. They describe about traditional soil management techniques, including
planting diverse crops in rotation (轮种), increasing organic content, ploughing as little as possible, etc. With
these techniques, farmers are able to produce rich agricultural production while maintaining deep banks of
fertile soil.
Why, then, is fertile soil being allowed to be washed and blown away The answer, not surprisingly,
rests in global capitalism. Farmers' profit is thin, forcing farmers to plant the highest-profit crop from field to
field every season. To ensure food security, Handelsman and Cohen urge the world to demand a real
top-down change in how agricultural production is managed. "The burden of protecting soil cannot be shifted
to farmers and environmental activists," they note. Governments must begin to move towards a model in
which farmers are less independent business people growing and selling food, and more
government-supported land workers managing both food production and soil protection. This should be the
core of agriculture.
Our land and soil are too precious to be destroyed by the market price of crops. We must invest deeply

It scarcely seems surprising that learning to underline a modal verb, such as “can”, and “may”, does
little to help students use them effectively in their own writing. These words are anyway grasped by tiny
children without the need to know what they are called. This may tempt the conclusion that the teaching of
grammar should be shelved altogether. But there are reasons to reform it rather than throw it away.
Understanding of language is part of a wider education in what makes human beings human. How
concepts are turned into sounds, and how those sounds combine to form commands or questions, are issues
that have occupied many language experts. What they reveal about the mind has exercised psychologists and
cognitive (认知的) scientists.
There are practical reasons to ask children to work hard at grammar, too. One is that a knowledge of it
will make learning a foreign language easier. Even if you did know by nature how to make clauses in your
native languages as a child — just without instruction — getting to grips with them in German or Russian in
later years is simpler if you know how to define and spot them. As it is, many English-speakers come to
understand grammar by studying a foreign language, rather than the other way round.
For grammarians keen on future jobs, the natural-language processing field is booming. After many
years of poor results, technological wizards have developed programs for automated translation, speech
recognition and other services that are actually usable, if far from perfect. These tools may rely more on
knowledge of artificial intelligence than of the subjunctive, but linguistic (语言学的) expertise still matters,
and may give beginners an edge over competitors whose best language is Python (编程).
Grammar could still be taught better. One small study showed improvement in some students when
concepts are linked concretely to writing tasks. A cook does not need to know chemistry to make a delicious
soup. But the science of how words combine to make meaning is fascinating and fundamental.

I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that
I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win
situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the
residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I
worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old
classics.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking
through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand
dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make
some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were
seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations
going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as
Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.
