It was probably her giggling(咯咯笑) that drew my attention. English reading really wasn’t that funny as far as I knew.
It was early May and I was facing a class of sixteen kids. Though I had almost three years of teaching, this particular sixth grade class had pushed me to the limits of my patience far too many times, and I couldn’t wait to wave goodbye to them for the summer.
I had kept away from the ideal of my first year of teaching. That first year I’d covered up the small hole in the window with an inspirational poster. I’d decorated the walls with pictures of famous universities. I told the kids daily that they always had something worth struggling for. Together we would work hard and make something of their lives.
The problem, of course, was that my ideals kept being defeated by reality. Not just the reality of troubled families. I was also faced with the basic reality of the twelve- and thirteen-year-old mind. The universal mind, “You can’t make me!”
And now I was faced with a giggle when I should have had only full attention. Walking over to the young peacebreaker, I asked for the note she had in her hands. Frozen, she refused to give it to me. I waited, all attention in the room on the quiet battle between teacher and student. When she finally handed it over, saying, “Okay, but I didn’t draw it,” which showed this wasn’t just an ordinary note being passed.
After getting the class going on an English reading test, I finally had a chance to look through it. It was a hand-drawn picture of me, eyes monitoring widely, teeth blackened, and the words “I’m stupid” coming out of my mouth. There was no doubt about who it was supposed to be.
I managed to fold up the picture calmly. My mind, however, was working angrily and wanting to criticize some students on the scene. I figured I knew the two most likely candidates for drawing the picture. Maybe it was high time that I did it!

After six hours of fishing, John Franklin and his sister Jane were ready to call it a day. It was 7 pm. The summer sun was setting, and the fishes had stepped biting. But Jane's I2-year-old son Conrad was having so much fun that he begged "Let's do just one more run," Since the mild weather was holding out, why not John turned the boat around and headed back.
Yet, you never knew. They hadn't even cast their lines when the wind picked up suddenly. Rough waves began battling against the little boat. “Check your lifejackets and hold the boat!” John shouted. As Jane and her son were on the point of screaming two big waves rolled over, one right after the other. Within a few seconds, the boat tipped(倾斜)backward and turned over, throwing three of them into the water.
Out of the worst, the luckiest thing was that they had lifejackets on and the boat didn't sink immediately. Everyone grabbed onto it. “Let's get back in the boat, Mommy. " Conrad cried, trembling with fear.
“Don't panic. People know we're out here,” Jane comforted him. “They'll send help soon. ”Treading (踩)the water, the adults exchanged worried looks. They were floating in the middle of nowhere. “I knew we were in a tight spot,” said John, a third-generation commercial fisherman who, like Jane, had been raised on the bay.
When a strong wind blew through about half an hour with no sign of dying down, they had to make some decisions. It had been a perfect July day, with the water at a temperate 20 degrees centigrade, but everyone was cold by 9 pm.
If they weren't rescued soon, they might not survive the night, John recognized, but the closest shoreline was about three miles away, starred by only a few glowing house lights.

Alex ode nis bike on his way home, and Johnson's Pond cane into view.
Sometimes his dad took him canoeing (划独木舟) there, and Alex loved it. The pond was aways so alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles (乌龟) sunbathing on sunny rocks. Alex was curious about turtles. When it was t00 rainy to go canoeing he often went to the library to check out books on turtles.
Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided to ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again. Suddenly Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be. He jumped off to have a look.
And then, the rock started to move! It was actually a large turtle slowly making its way across the road! Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex knew he couldn't pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone's finger! What could he do
Thinking fast, he started waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop.
“Are you alright, Alex ” It was his neighbor, Mrs. Ramos.
“I'm fine, Mrs. Ramos.” said Alex. “I'm just trying to save a turtle. It's probably going to lay eggs."
“Oh, yeah. It's spring." said Mrs. Ramos. “So, I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in the grass across the road." Then she waved goodbye and drove off/
Alex thought about what Mrs. Ramos had said. “There would probably be more turtles trying to cross the road at this spot!" he realized. But he couldn't stand there all day trying to stop cars. He looked around and a road sign caught his eye. And then his face brightened.
He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad. The next morning, Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car.

Kelsey was grateful for everything her mother had done for her. In spite of being raised by her mother alone, Kelsey received a good education, and now held a leading position in a large company.
Recently the company was making corporate brochures (企业手册) in which achievers would share their success and thank their parents as well. For this the achievers would have to take photos of themselves with their parents.
Kelsey didn’t really want that because her mother had put on a lot of weight due to a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle. Kelsey managed to contact one of the best photographers and made a reservation in advance. When she and her mother came to the photographer’s studio, Kelsey took the man aside and said, “Please make sure my mom looks thinner in the photo.” But the photographer said what her mother really needed was a diet or exercise, not a photographer.
Kelsey insisted that he shouldn’t make her mother look like a slim dancer. She just expected him to do his best to make her mother look a bit thinner. The photographer finally agreed and took measures to hide some details, setting the right light and choosing better angles for shots. But it was not easy to fool the camera.
Kelsey’s mother noticed how the photographer was having a hard time and how her daughter was shaking her head. She smiled and said that she just wanted photos with Kelsey no matter whether she looked heavy or not.
The next day, Kelsey came to pick up the photos with her mother. The photographer printed out several photos, copied the rest on a flash drive and handed them to Kelsey. Kelsey was disappointed and complained. How she wished her mother could look much thinner! The photographer shrugged helplessly and said nothing. Kelsey’s mother, however, said that the photographer did a good job and she was who she was. Then she told Kelsey to accept the fact that her mother was not “the tiny girl Thumbelina (拇指姑娘) in the fairy tale.”

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A couple of years ago, I volunteered to be a finish-line “hugger” at the Kentucky Special Olympics held in Richmond.
The day of the event dawned dull, wet and gray. Even though it started to rain and a cold wind blew, most of the participants were so excited that they didn’t seem to notice the weather at all.
My job was to stand at the end of a lane on the track and hug the person in that lane when he or she crossed the finish line. It seemed to me that many of the participants completed their races just so they could get that finish “hug”. As the arms of the hugger closed around them, their faces lit up with pure joy, whether they came in first or dead last.
While we huggers stood around, we talked. I was told that most of the participants had been training for the races all year. I also noticed that, the Special Olympic participants weren’t here just to win. They didn’t talk negatively about the people they were racing against. In fact, they hugged and wished each other luck before they started, and hugged again when it was over, whether they had won or not.
What I remember most vividly from that day was the long-distance race. It was a long race by any standards: twelve laps around the track. There were only four participants, three boys and one girl. They were only a couple of laps into the race when the rain started up again. Standing in the rain, I began to feel miserable. My feet hurt. I was soaking wet. I was hungry. I was cold when the rain and wind came and hot when the sun came out. I thought irritably: This race is lasting entirely too long. Even though the three boys were nearly finished, the girl was at least four laps behind. I wondered why she kept going when there was obviously no way she could win.

【答案】Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind. Suppressing my pride, I showed them the picture. The whole class was silent as I told them how hurtful this was for a teacher. Struggling to control my emotion, I demanded there must be a reason behind for such a picture and that now was their chance to tell me anything they needed to tell me. Asking them to get out of paper and write silently, I sniffled in the back of the classroom.
Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them. Where I thought I was driving them to success, I was actually driving them away. After class, the girl walked up, handing me a card embarrassedly. One side of the card was sincere regret for the ugly joke while the other side the appeal for forgiveness. I was deeply moved. Meanwhile, a great sense of guilt arose for being too harsh. After all, students appreciate being appreciated, for teachers’ encouragement is their best motivating force.

【答案】One possible version:
Finally, the three boys finished but they didn’t leave right away. The boys didn’t leave right away, but waited by the track cheering the girl on each time she went by. She was the runner in my lane and each time she ran by me, I could see she was wet and in pain and obviously exhausted. As she completed each lap her face was a little redder and her steps were slowing down. But she didn’t quit.
As she approached the finishing line, the girl was barely running. The audience went wild when she crossed the line. She fell into my arms and started sobbing. After hugging the three boys, she turned to the audience and bowed, saying “Thank you all.” Then she hugged me again and made her way to the awards table. I stood motionless, astonished and awed. Tears coursed down my face as I watched her joyfully accept her award for fourth place. At that moment, I understood why these Olympics were “special”.
