Our church charity in Toronto has a way of assisting those who have financial difficulties without making the receiver feel ashamed or guilty. They often dropped money into an offering box with only the name of the receiver on the envelope. The envelopes are then distributed to those members without them knowing the name of the giver.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. We did not talk about our financial difficulty with anyone. The only reason our children knew was that we had to cut back on many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware of the extent of our need, nor of how much their father and I were suffering because of it. We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve.
Unfortunately, our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I knew that we would have to look for outside help. Just as we reached the point of desperation, our church gave us a gift envelope that had been left in the offering box. We were overjoyed to receive a very large amount of money, enough to bring us through that desperate time. We couldn’t help but wonder who had given such a generous gift. We were extremely relieved and grateful.
A year later, our seventeen-year-old son was applying for a student loan so he could attend university. It was then that we discovered his savings account was almost empty. His father and I were very disturbed by this. We had trusted him to put part of his wages from his part-time job into the bank towards his education. Actually, from the time he was nine years old he had been a paper carrier for The Toronto Star, and he had worked very hard for his small earnings to achieve his university dream.

For years Grandpa taught me chess on a well-worn chessboard, the bottom of which was covered with dozens of names and dates.
“What's this, Grandpa ” I asked one day.
“These are the men from World War I, passing the time with me on the front line. Whenever someone beat me, I let them write their name on it.”
“This fellow, Sergeant Paul Ward, saved me from German soldiers,” Grandpa pointed to a name, “and carried me off the field. While both of us were in hospital, he beat me at chess.”
He handed the chessboard to me saying, “I want you to have it now. That's the way it is in life: we pass our love on to the next person.
Sadly, it wasn't long before Grandpa passed away.
Later I volunteered to be the social worker for a retirement community in a park, where I observed elderly residents sitting alone silently, heads down.
Several stone tables in the park had chessboards imprinted on them. One day, I set up my chess pieces and waited.
An elderly man cautiously approached.
“Care for a game ” I cheerfully inquired.
The man smiled weakly and sat down.
“Your move... um, didn't catch your name.”
“Paul,” he said.
“Your move, Paul.”
He hesitated, as if not sure how to proceed. I tried not being aggressive in my play, but only delayed his defeat.
He sighed, “It's been long since I played. Will you come tomorrow ”
“Yes, and every day after that.”
The next day when I arrived, Paul was already there, playing another elderly gentleman. I set up my pieces on a table waiting for others.
Soon our play extended to a merry club of chess-playing seniors, twenty people showing up each day and many more watching.
I didn't played Paul after our first game but he came every day playing chess with others.
We ran short of chessboards, so I decided to bring Grandpa's.
Paul approached once I set up the board. Staring at the chessboard thoughtfully, he said, “How about a rematch ”

Raju's family was the smallest family on the coastal line of Kanyakumari. Raju was 10 years old. He was tall, dark and handsome and had a lot of dreams. He had always dreamt of living in a city. He was always his dad's charm, as he was not quite happy to spend time with his mom. All he could remember about his mom was her scars, red and white scars on her face, neck and hands. He always felt unpleasant to see his mom's face. But what he did not know was that his mom scratched her beauty to save him from a fire when he was one year old. Not wanting to burden him with it, Raju's parents kept it a secret.
His mom Kamala used to drop him to school and pick him up every day. He felt awkward to see his mom with that scarred face standing in front of the school gate. As he was laughing and chatting with his fellow school mates, all of them became silent and started staring at the gate. So, Raju turned towards the gate with a lot of curiosity. He froze when seeing his mom, face covered with a piece of cloth. Raju felt ashamed and rushed out of the school with lots of anger.
With days passing by, Raju started to dislike his mom more. He did not like to get picked up or dropped by his mom. He felt that she was ugly and so abnormal. As he grew old, he stopped going out with her to the market or anywhere outside. Kamala tried her best to make her son happy, got him everything that he wanted and gave him his space. She understood what her son was going through and felt pity for herself and sad for her son, as she was helpless.
When Raju turned 15, he was sent to a city high school 67 kilometers away from his coastal village. The very thought of not being with his ugly mother made him very happy.
Three years later, then came Raju's graduation ceremony. His parents didn't want to be absent from such an important occasion, so they managed to be there without informing Raju.

It was time for graduates to hunt for jobs. The majority of them didn't have working experience for they had spent most of their time at school studying academic subjects. It was not until they graduated from college that they realized it was a challenge for them to land jobs.
Jimmy, one of these job hunters, was a young academically excellent person. One day, after making good preparations, he went to apply for a managerial position in a big company. In spite of fierce competition, he managed to pass the first interview. What a lucky dog! Jimmy was informed to come for the next round in a few days—the last interview for the company to make the final decision.
The big day finally came. He dressed neatly, the grey tie matching perfectly the decent suit. Blood rushing to his face and heart pounding heavily, he tried to calm down, and then took a few deep breaths. It was his turn.
The interviewer, an elegant lady, discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research. After several rounds of questions related to the position, she asked, “Have you ever done any part-time jobs ” “None.” After a while, the interviewer asked who paid for Jimmy's school fees. The youth answered in a low voice, “My father passed away when I was one year old, so it was my mother who paid for all my school fees.”
She continued, “What did your mother do ” “My mother worked as a clothes cleaner.” The lady requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.
The interviewer paused for a second, leaning against the chair, “Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before " Ashamed, Jimmy replied, “Never. My mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.” She nodded, adding, “I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother's hands, and then see me back here tomorrow morning.”

I sit on the edge of my bed, faint smiles sliding across my face, as I sort through old photographs. I hold each memory briefly in my hands before dropping them onto the pile in my lap and searching for the next happy moment to remember. Each picture brings up feelings deep within me.
As I relive the memories, I can't help but notice one photo in particular buried deep in the box. The picture at first glance is lovely. The sun was shining with not a cloud to be seen. I was sting with my arm around a happy-looking girl, her arm rested casually on my shoulders. As I focus on the happy girl, the smile that covers my face becomes a frown. It is Amy Soule, my now ex-best friend. A terrible pang (一阵剧痛) of regret flashes through me, and I feel tightness in my throat.
Our decline in friendship began with different interests. She wanted to go to the mall and shop, while I preferred to watch old movies in my spare time. Soon the only time I saw her was when we exchanged a hurried hello in the busy school halls between classes. No more notes were passed behind the teacher's back, and my parent's phone bill became much cheaper. She found a new group of friends, and so did I. Before I had a chance to repair the friendship, she moved away, causing the crack to become an uncrossable rift.
I made excuses for not keeping in touch. It was too far to visit, too long of a drive. I knew that was not the truth, but I was too nervous to pick up the phone and call. Eventually, the rift grew too large to bridge. Amy had left and she had taken a huge chunk of my heart with her.
I stand up and pull myself back into the now. Glancing up at my calendar, I remember that Amy's birthday is around the corner. In fact, we were born in the same room, two days apart. We started so close and ended up so far. This bittersweet memory causes me to smile despite my feelings of regret.

I asked him repeatedly where the money had gone. One day, after another round of being questioned, my son was no longer able to hold back his secret and bared everything to me (made a clear breast of it) (袒露真相): he was that mysterious giver who helped us pull through the darkest time in our life. Aware that his father and I could hardly make ends meet(收支相抵), he did not hesitate to withdraw his year-long saving from the bank, even if it meant he had to apply for a student-loan to achieve his university dream. Tears swelling up in my eyes, I threw my arms around my son, squeezed his skinny shoulder and kept mumbling, "thank you, son!"
Several busy days later, there appeared an envelop in the box. Judging from its heavy weight, the whole family knew this would be another generous donation from an unknown Samaritan(好人). Winking at my son, I nudged(敦促道), "Open it! This is for your university tuition." With shaky hands and sweaty palms, my son unbuckled(打开) the envelop and hoisted from it 5,000 dollars, an amount large enough to cover his three-year university tuition. No longer did we need to know that secretive donor, for we all made up in our mind that we would continue this chain of kindness. / pay forward such kindness and generosity in the future. Once we began, I saw Paul not only have his chess skills refined but also show a change of mental state. He had excellent performance, employing an effective planning method that helped him come up with a good strategy in almost any position. A few minutes later, I was defeated/checkmated. Looking me in the eye, he swept a trembling hand over the board and said, “Before you came along, I’d had my life given up. But since I played with you, I’ve reconnected with old friends and made new ones. The chess club may have saved my life.”
When I told Paul Grandpa’s custom about this chessboard and asked him to write his name on the back, he smiled and said, “No need.” He went on, “My Last name’s Ward. Paul Ward. It’s on the upper right-hand corner of the chessboard. Find it.” I flipped the chessboard over and there it was: Sergeant Paul Ward 6/10/44. What a coincidence! At that moment, Grandpa’s words flooded over me — “This fellow … carried me off the field.” Paul Ward was the very soldier who had saved my grandfather’s life. And now, years later, Grandpa’s love and passion for chess had returned the favor. As the saying goes, one good turn deserves another.

Back home, Jimmy requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange but with mired feelings, she showed her hands to the kid. It was the first time he had noticed that there were so many bruises in her hands. His tears fell as he cleaned her hands. This was also the first time he had realized that it was the bruises in the mother's hands that were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future. After cleaning his mother's hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother. That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.
The next morning, Jimmy went to the interviewer's office. "What have you done and learned, young man ” Jimmy answered with tears in his eyes, "I cleaned my mother's hands and all the remaining clothes." The lady nodded, "Please share something with me." The youth said, "Firstly, I know now what appreciation is. Without my mother, there would not be the successful me today. Additionally, by working together and helping my mother, I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done. Ultimately, I have learned to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship." The interviewer smiled, "This is what I am looking for to be my manager. You are hired. Congratulations!"

Suddenly I have an idea. Without the slightest hesitation, I drop to my knees and begin to wildly search through my desk drawers. At last, I lay my hands on an old picture frame I have had forever. I pick up the fallen photo of Amy and me, snapping it into the frame. Praying that this framed photograph will prompt her to take a sudden trip back to our happy moment, I write a simple note, saying “Happy birthday, Amy!”
I stick the note under the edge of the photo frame and search for Amy's address. Thankfully I made it. I hold the frame tightly in my arms, determined not to let this golden chance slip through my fingers. “It's not much, but it's a start,” I said to myself, “ and the space between us is already smaller.” This time I will not hesitate to be the one to reach out and build a bridge. It may be hard but fixing a broken friendship will leave it stronger than before. (150 words)
