Alice's mother died when she was five years old. Although her nine brothers and sisters were loving and caring, they were no replacement for a mother's love.
The year was 1925, and life was hard. Alice,__who grew up to be my mother, told me that her family was too poor to even afford to give her a doll.
In my mother's life, her father, then her husband, later her three children and then her grandchildren were the main focus of her life. She felt that she could make up for her sad childhood through her devotion to her own family, but an unfilled void(空间) seemed to remain.
In December 1982, I had a job at a local bank. One afternoon, we were decorating the tree in the bank and getting ready for the Christmas season. One of my customers approached me with some beautiful handmade dolls. She was taking orders for Christmas. I decided to get one for my daughter, Katie, who was almost five years old. Then I had an idea. I asked my customer if she could make a special doll for my mother—one with grey hair and glasses: a grandmother doll.
The doll maker felt that this idea was certainly unique and took it on as a creative challenge. So I placed my Christmas order:__two dolls, one blonde and one grey haired for Christmas morning!
Things really started to fall into place when a friend had told me that his dad—who played Santa Claus in my area—would be willing to make a visit on Christmas morning to my home to deliver Katie her presents! Knowing that my parents would be there as well, I began to get ready for what would turn out to be one of the most memorable days of my mother's life.

That night, I quarrelled with my__mother,__then stormed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket and did not even take my cellphone with me to make a call home.
At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles,__but I had no money!
The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey little girl, you want to eat a bowl of noodles?”
“But…but I do not carry money…” I shyly replied.
“Okay, I'll treat you,” the seller said. “Come in, and I will cook you a bowl of noodles.”
A few minutes later, the seller brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.
“What is it?” he asked.
“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is cruel (残忍的)!”
The seller sighed, “Girl, why did you think so Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking__care__of you since you were little. Why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mum?”
I was really surprised after hearing that.
Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised me since I was little but I have never felt so, not even a little.

Risha loved school. However, there was one class Risha worried about more than any other—art. She didn't know why she just wasn't any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.
Ms__Clay,__the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. “Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced. Ms Clay was a great teacher, and Risha liked her a lot. But this announcement made Risha nervous. “Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Risha found herself sinking lower in her chair.
Risha had the whole weekend to work on her project,__but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Risha felt frightened, so after school Risha asked Ms Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you, Risha,” Ms Clay said. “Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want.” Ms Clay smiled at her. “Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn't always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very amazing,__and I can't wait to see it.”
When Risha arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms Clay's words: art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings. Risha wrote the word “terrified” on her paper. She crumpled(把……揉成团) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.

It was in New Hampshire. Cody was an 11 year old boy. Just like other boys, he enjoyed running around the lake,__and sometimes picked yellow daisies for his mother's kitchen table along the paths. But the thing he liked best was fishing. He went fishing whenever he had got a chance and he was proud of his fishing skills.
On the day before that year's bass(鲈鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵) and practised casting. The lure hit the water, stirring up coloured ripples in the sunset, and then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake. It was an unusually quiet evening. The gentle wind from the lake was so refreshing.
After what seemed a long time, Cody noticed his fishing pole doubled over, and he knew at once that something huge was on the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy skilfully brought the fish beside the bank.
Finally, he very carefully lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, gills playing back and forth in the moonlight. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 pm—two hours before the season opened. He looked at the bass, then at Cody.
“You'll have to put__the__fish__back,__son,” he said.
“Dad!” cried the boy.
“There will be other fish,”said his father gently but firmly.
“Not as big as this one,”cried the boy again.

We live in central Phoenix, near the canal. Every day I used to see a homeless old man and his shabby and untidy dog hanging out down there.
I would tell my husband we should give him food for the little dog. It wouldn't have been a problem; we have our own “mini farm” of animals! But he would say “OK!” and then blow the idea off because__of our business.
Being in Phoenix, Arizona, you can just imagine how hot it gets here, but its winter was really chilly! I had just come from KFC with take out food for dinner. As I was turning by the canal, the man was sitting on a long bench, wrapping himself with an old__brown__coat and even older scarf. Even the dog had a worn out woolen vest on! Not even thinking more about it, I pulled into the parking lot along__the__canal and piled up a plate of chicken with all the fixings for the man and his little dog as well as a cup of hot coffee and a bottle of juice. Looking at all the hot and delicious food and drink, he said, “Thank you, sweetie. You are an angel.” And he was a little moved and I found tears welling up in his eyes! I told him he was so welcome, and then went home.
When my husband dug into the KFC bag, he asked, “Were you hungry, or what happened?” I told him what I did and he said, “Only you!” Then he told me I had done a good thing. Since there had been nothing left in the KFC bag, we decided to go out to have our dinner. By the time, we wanted to pay our bill, I couldn't find my wallet. I really didn't know where I lost it. Luckily, there was not much money in it, and I forgot it at once.

It was a cool spring evening in Melbourne, Australia. I drove to my boxing gym for a Friday night training session. After lifting up, I started training. Then I noticed a tall and slim young__man walking through the doors. There was something about him that caught my attention.
Before long, I realized that he might have a mental__illness. Having volunteered for mental illness support groups, I really understood his problems when I looked at him.
He paid for the session, put on a pair of gloves and then started hitting the punching bag. I watched him from a distance and wanted to help him to punch straighter and better. Then I felt it was best to leave that up to the trainer who was also watching him.
After a few seconds of punching the bag, he stopped and started staring__at the ceiling. The trainer went up to him and offered to help him. It was almost like he woke up from a dream. He broke eye contact with the ceiling at once and followed the trainer's instructions.
Then the bell rang and it was the end of the round. Between rounds we were required to do five press ups (俯卧撑), so all the boys that were training that night did five press ups. He struggled to complete his five press ups. The bell sounded again and the next round began. He punched the bag for a few seconds and then he stopped. This time he was staring at the walls which were decorated with boxing posters. From his expression,__it was clear to me that he could not fix his attention for long.

That night was soft and warm as I lay on the sofa in our living room, staring at the ceiling. I was thinking of the hospital. We had gone there that afternoon to visit my father for Valentine's Day. Daddy was in a high bed that was folded in half some way. He looked alright to me. I didn't know why he kept going to that place anyway.
I sat as quietly as possible. My trouble was that I wanted to hug him and I was afraid of what Mama would say if I climbed up on his bed to do it. I didn't know why she would mind—I only knew she would. Sometimes she said I was too rough. I didn't know the meaning of her words. I was such a little girl and Daddy was so big—how could I hurt him I thought there must be some other reasons why he couldn't play with me like he used to. Maybe he was too tired.
My parents talked for a long time while I looked out of the window and played with my brother__and__sister. I didn't like that place and I wanted to go. There didn't seem to be anything to do there. Then, all at once,we were leaving. Daddy called me to his bedside and told me to be sure to say my prayers. I said I would and kissed him quickly on the cheek. Then I was glad to leave that building. The people there were sick…except,of course,my daddy. He was not sick at all.
As I settled comfortably into the depths of the sofa, deep in thought, I was startled by the shrill sound of the telephone. That made me angry—now Mama would get up and find I was not sleeping yet. Why did somebody have to call then anyway

One possible version:
Christmas arrived and so did Santa Claus. Katie was excited that Santa had come to visit our family. My mother was enjoying watching her granddaughter's reaction to this special guest. As Santa turned to leave, he looked into his bag again and took out another gift. As he asked who Alice was, my mother, surprised, said that she in fact was. Santa handed her the gift with a message card that read: “For Alice: I came across this package that was supposed to be delivered on December 25, 1925. The present inside has aged, but I felt that you might still wish to have it.”
I have never forgotten my mother's reaction when she saw the present. She couldn't speak but only held the doll she had waited fifty seven years to receive as tears of joy ran down her cheeks. That doll made my mother the happiest “child” alive.

One possible version:
Just at that moment, many memories came back into my mind. When I was ill, she was always the one taking care of me. When I had trouble with my study, she never lost faith in me and encouraged me to keep going. When I arrived home during the weekend, she always prepared my favourite food. All her kindness came back to me. I should be grateful for all she had done for me. I realized I should go back home immediately and say sorry to my__mother.
When arriving home, I saw my mother sitting at the dinner table, worried and tired. She must have been looking for me everywhere. I was ready for her anger and shouts. However, before I could apologize, my mother saw me and said gently, “Oh, honey, thank God you're back! Come inside. You are probably very hungry I cooked your favourite e and eat while they are still hot…” No longer able to control myself, I cried in her arms. “I'm sorry, mum. Please forgive me,” I whispered to her in tears,__extremely ashamed of myself.

One possible version:
It did not take him a long time to find Truc's house. After Truc quitted__school he got a piece of land from his grandparents. Through hard work and his knowledge about land, Truc was able to turn his luck into success in ten years and became well off. But he forgot the promise of the__old__days. When Tung appeared in front of his house, Truc was shocked. He tried his best to show his hardships of his life to stop Tung's asking for money, never knowing this friend was a city officer then. Tung was treated to a small dinner and left.
What happened in Mai's house was quite different. Still as an__ordinary__person,__Tung arrived at Mai's house just as before at Truc's, but he was warmly welcomed by the poor couple, who were still living in poverty. In order to serve the guest, Mai's wife sold her fine black hair to buy a basket of food. Now you could know the three old friends were really going separate__ways.

One possible version:
Then Risha stared at the crumpled ball. It reminded her of a snowball. Suddenly an idea struck her. Why not create a winter wonderland out of crumpled paper Risha didn't have to draw or paint or even cut. Risha made many paper balls, glued them all together, and placed them on a big piece of hard paper to form a snowman. The snowman wore a hat made of black paper and even a scarf made of red paper. Her finished project was really wonderful.
On Friday, Risha carefully carried her project into the library. She noticed the smiles and the nods from teachers and other students as she put her work on a table. Ms__Clay walked over to Risha. “You have created an amazing piece of artwork. I am so proud of you!” Ms Clay said. Risha was proud of herself too. Her pride grew when Ms Clay placed a first place star on her artwork. “Maybe I am a good artist after all,” Risha thought.

One possible version:
Cody looked around. No other men were fishing anywhere around the lake. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by the firmness in his father's voice that the decision was final. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water. The creature swished its body and disappeared. The boy sighed at the loss of such an awesome fish.
Do we do right when no one is looking Do we stop at the red light when the street is empty We would if we were taught to “put__the__fish__back” when we were young. It is a story worth telling to our children and grandchildren. It is not about how we take advantage of someone or something, but about how we resist a big lure when no one is watching.

One possible version:
A week later, I was waiting my friend on the bank of the canal. It was much colder, and I was a little impatient. Suddenly, I found somebody waving and calling “angel”to me. I recognized him almost at once, because only he once called me “angel ”. He was walking to me, slowly but excitedly, with his little dog. He asked me whether I lost a wallet when we met last time. I was not sure until he took a wallet carefully from his inside pocket of that old__brown__coat. I nodded and he smiled like a child.
I had a chat with the old man. We were walking along__the__canal and he told me that he found my wallet after I left and guessed it must have been taken out with that bag of food by accident. But he didn't know my name and address and didn't find any clue in the wallet. So he could do nothing but wait here every day, because he believed that I would come one day. Hearing this,I was completely moved and knew who was the real “angel ” !

One possible version:
When I finished training, I decided to go up to him and offer him my help. I briefly introduced myself and asked whether I could join him in the training. He seemed to be happy to get a partner. So I held the bag for him and asked him to punch. He hit the bag a few times and then stopped again. I smiled at him and asked, “Do you like boxing?”He replied with a very shy expression on his face, “Yes, boxing is alright.”
What else could I do than appreciate this man and his willingness to give it a go Most people put self imagined limitations on their lives and stop themselves from having a go. I kept thinking about this young__man while admiring him for even turning up at a boxing gym, let alone training at what appeared to be his hardest. There are many lessons to learn from this man. What I really admired about this man was that he had a go! That is what separates ordinariness from greatness.

One possible version:
Just as I wondered, Mama appeared. Mama spoke for only a few minutes on the telephone,__asking questions like “when?” and “how?” Then she woke up my elder brother__and__sister. In a few seconds the whole house was buzzing with some sort of news. “At eleven o'clock.” “…too young to be dead.” I heard these phrases, but I couldn't put together their meaning.
Mama came then with a serious look on her face. She told me he was dead in the hospital. My daddy was dead No! It wasn't true. He was tired but he couldn't die. He had kissed me only that afternoon. People didn't die just like that! People only died when they were old…very old with grey hair and wrinkles. Not people I knew…not anyone I loved. Not my father! He was mine and no one could take my father away from me. He would live forever.
