A reporter is interviewing Zhang Qian, a volunteer guide of the Western Painting Exhibition.
Reporter: So how long have you prepared for this exhibition
Zhang Qian: For about 3 months. And the whole experience is still fresh in my memory.
Reporter: Which artist or works impress you most in the exhibition
Zhang Qian: I think I am most attracted to the works of the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, the originator of Cubism. He is thought to be one of the greatest artists and sculptors of the 20th century.
Reporter: Ah, Picasso. I think even today we are influenced by his ideas. Which work is your favorite
Zhang Qian: Oh, if I have to choose one, it will be The Portrait.
Reporter: Why
Zhang Qian: The eyes of the artist in the picture are curious, and they are full of vitality.
Reporter: Those eyes are also very attractive.
Zhang Qian: Yes, indeed. His eyes mean so much. When we look at Picasso’s paintings there is always something to enlighten our mind and heart. This is Picasso’s gift to us.
Reporter: You really help me understand Picasso much better. Thank you so much.

Did you know that the Silk Road was neither an actual road nor a single
route What’s more, there were not only routes on land, but also routes
by sea.
The maritime Silk Road started during the Qin Dynasty and reached its
peak during the Ming Dynasty. It linked Chinese ports with Korea, Japan,
South Asia and even East Africa. The famous explorer to travel this sea
route was Zheng He in the Ming Dynasty.
The ancient Silk Road also has a long history. As early as over 2 000 years ago, China and ancient Rome were already connected by the Silk Road. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Chinese emissary Gan Ying was sent to search for “Da Qin”, the Chinese name of the Roman Empire at that time. The famous explorer Marco Polo’s travels caused the first wave of “China fever” among European countries. Strong evidence suggests that Greece was introduced to silk products from China in the 6th century BC. The four great inventions of ancient China, papermaking, printing, the compass and gunpowder also reached the European countries by the ancient Silk Road. These inventions helped boost the development of Western societies.
The Silk Road was a path of cultural exchanges between the East and the West. Many people over the centuries traveled the Silk Road in search of friendship between different parts of the world.

Marco Polo and His Book
One of the most famous Europeans to travel the Silk Road was Marco Polo. In the book The Travels of Marco Polo, he wrote about his travels along the Silk Road in Asia, especially in China.
Marco Polo’s father and uncle were successful Silk Road merchants(商人). They took Marco on their journey to the East in 1271 when he was a teenager. The Polos took a land route across Asia and stayed in China for about 17 years during the Yuan Dynasty.
Culture Understanding
Marco Polo and His Book
The Polos were not the first Westerners to travel to China, but Marco Polo was the first to write a well-known book about it. Although some historians have questioned(质疑) what he said in it, his book gave many people in the West their first look at the civilizations of the East and inspired(激励;鼓舞) many travelers after him. In this sense(从这种意义上说), Marco Polo and his book have truly brought the West and the East closer together.
