Two excellent Chinese scientists, who were awarded the Medals of the Republic in 2019, are undoubtedly the role models of the times.
One of them is Yuan Longping, known as the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. In 1974, he successfully developed a special type of rice which can produce a 20% higher yield, putting China in the global lead in rice production. For the achievement, he won the State Supreme Science and Technology Award. The crop is now grown in more than 30 countries and regions. By 2003, half of China’s rice production area was planted with hybrid rice. Yuan set world records in hybrid rice yields in 1999, 2005, 2011 and 2017, providing a solution to worldwide hunger.

The other is Tu Youyou. She is the first Chinese scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of artemisinin (青蒿素), a group of drugs used to treat malaria. She and her workmates studied ancient Chinese medicine books and different traditional treatments. Having done nearly 200 experiments, they finally succeeded in getting artemisinin. This drug became the standard treatment for malaria on the World Health Organization list of essential medicines. Thanks to Tu’s contribution, more than 240 million people in Africa have benefited, and over 1.5 million lives have been saved since 2000.

Zhang Fuqing, a Veteran War Hero
Zhang Fuqing, a 95-year-old war hero, was awarded the “National Outstanding CPC (Communist Party of China) Member” in 2019. Zhang served as a soldier with the Northwest Field Army, one of the main forces of the Chinese People’s
Liberation Army during the War of Liberation. He was awarded the honorary（荣誉的） title of “Combat Hero.” In 1955, Zhang retired from the army and began to devote his life to the poverty-stricken mountainous areas in Laifeng, a remote（偏僻的） county in central China’s Hubei province. For more than 60 years, he deliberately kept his past achievements a secret, even from his children and worked hard for the people’s wellbeing.

Shen Jilan, China’s Longest-serving Lawmaker
Shen Jilan has been a farmer for her whole life. She is also a lifetime national lawmaker. She stands out among nearly 3,000 National People’s Congress (NPC) deputies as the only one to serve at all previous 12 NPCs since 1954. She started out at 25. It was she who proposed the clause（提案） on “equal pay for equal work between men and women”, which was written into the first Constitution of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1954.
Zhang Fuqing and Shen Jilan were awarded the Medals of the Republic in 2019. They fulfilled their obligation（义务） and showed their loyalty to the Party and the people with decades of diligent（勤勉的） work.
