There are more and more discussions on natural disasters in recent years. It is known that sandstorms are caused naturally by strong winds blowing over loose soil or sand. Half a century ago, sandstorms happened every seven or eight years; now they come almost once a year. Experts tie the problem to the rapid urban development, and cutting down trees is another reason which is largely due to human activities. Some people do not pay enough attention to smog, and they don’t know it is partly caused by the gases from heavy industry and vehicles. These harmful gases also lead to acid rain, though a very small part of acid rain comes from volcanoes or wildfires. When these gases enter the air, they also lead to global warming.
Today we are growing too fast to remember the importance of sustainable development for both nature and our human world. Many of the natural disasters are due to the environmental damages caused by human activities.

Cultural Understanding
Global concern about natural disasters is probably at an all-time high. Countries around the world have realized the importance of change from a fossil fuel-driven（化石燃料驱动的） economy to a sustainable and green one.
One area that needs to change is transportation. The road transport model is also becoming a serious problem: private cars powered by petrol lead to air pollution, traffic jam and noise. A growing number of countries have set targets for electric vehicle sales. The UK and France want all new cars to be electric and produce zero emissions（排放） by 2040.

Electric Cars
Two countries are leading the way when it comes to electric cars and hybrids（混合动力汽车）. One is Norway, where more than half of the new cars sold fall into these categories. The other is China, which leads the world in electric vehicle sales and whose market keeps growing.
Electric Planes
It is not only vehicles that are going electric. Norway plans to use electric planes for all short flights of 1.5 hours or less. Avinor, the public operator of Norwegian airports, is planning to test an electric-powered plane in 2025. Airbus, Rolls Royce and Siemens are working together to develop a hybrid model which may make its first flight soon. These developments will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also reduce noise levels by half.

According to EM-DAT (Emergency Disaster Database), the total natural disasters reported each year has been greatly increasing in recent decades. These disasters include droughts, typhoons, and floods, which have been increasing over the past years. In 1980, there were only about 100 such disasters reported per year, but it has risen to over 300 a year since 2000. Scientists believe that some of these natural disasters are caused by human activities: for example, rapid urban development, cutting down too many trees, air pollution caused by harmful gases from heavy industries and vehicles. Our environment is badly polluted, and the increased number of natural disasters is a warning sign.
