Choose Native Plants for Your Garden
Jessica Damiano moved into a new home in the spring of 2005. A month later, she was delighted to see a flowering plant start to grow. ____16____
Two years later, Damiano graduated from Cornell University’s master gardener program. She worked as a gardening writer for a local newspaper. ____17____ She discovered that her favorite plant was called purple loosestrife and that it was considered “invasive(入侵的)” in her home state of New York. However, she told herself that the plant was not spreading on the land and that it was not out of control.
Then she learned more. Some plants known to be invasive are what Damiano calls “wolves in sheep’s clothing”. This means they may seem harmless and well-contained in the garden but become harmful in other places.
____18____ Those seeds grow into new plants that affect native plants. This is because invasive plants often are not eaten by local wildlife, which would otherwise keep them under control.
If not controlled, invasive plants grow larger and push out native plants that provide food and shelter for birds, insects, and small animals. This harms the local environment.
Many state environmental agencies don’t allow the sale and use of plants found to be harmful to human or ecological(生态的) health. But some invasive plants are not officially considered invasive. ____19____
So, what should a gardener do
Damiano says gardeners should avoid any plants sold as “fast-spreading” “quick-climbing” or a “rapid self-sower”. She warns that these are all sellers’ key words for invasive plants.
Next, learn about your local area. Which plants are invasive And which plants are native Ask government agencies and environmental groups. ____20____ Then you can confirm invasive plants.
A. But that did not matter to her.
B. That is when she found out the truth.
C. It destroys food and habitat for fish and water birds.
D. You can also do your own study at libraries or online.
E. She did not know the name of the beautiful purple plant.
F. Others may be listed as invasive in one area but not another.
G. Birds eat the seeds of invasive plants and spread them to other places.

How to Be Creative During Difficult Times
When we are struggling, or when we have a hard time focusing, we may turn to others for help. We may even wish we had a hero to help us. Well, today we offer you some advice.
Turn yourself into your own hero!
That is the idea behind Kendra Levin's self-help book The Hero Is You. When you make yourself a hero, you get not only a focus but also a purpose. ____16____ For example, it can give us hope as stories often do. In stories, writers often give their hero, the main person in the story, a purpose. ____17____
Write out your task and idea.
In stories, heroes also have a task—what they want to achieve—and an idea—what they see for themselves. Levin suggests that we write out our task and idea, not just for a project but for our lives as well. With a clear task and an idea, events in our lives no longer feel like separate events. ____18____ There's just a lot of value in having a task and an idea.
Know your advantages and weaknesses.
____19____In difficult times, we can make our lives easier by focusing on our advantages. It is even more important to identify weaknesses. All heroes have them. On their journey they face their weaknesses and learn from them.
Have small goals within a larger goal.
Levin tells us that the hero's journey is not a one-time thing. ____20____ So, she suggests having small goals that you can measure in some way. Our life's journey is ongoing and ever-changing. We should be realistic with our goals and be kind to ourselves, especially during difficult times.
A. You can never really finish all tasks.
B. They become a part of our larger story.
C. It is a journey you are on your whole life.
D. When we know our advantages, we can use them fully.
E. Making ourselves the hero in our own story helps us in many ways.
F. The more we know about the world, the better we understand ourselves.
G. Levin suggests we do the same for ourselves and identify our purpose.
