Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off the freeway on her way to work. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. She rolled down her window.
“Hey!” she shouted. “I’m driving around giving free haircuts. Do you want one right now ” “Actually,” the man said, “I was really hoping to get a haircut.”
“I’ll be right back,” Steller said. She drove off, went to the salon she owns, and asked one of her stylists to help her load a red chair into her car. Then the two of them drove back, and trimmed (修剪) the man’s curly grey hair. He told them about growing up in Mississippi, about moving to be closer to his adult children, and how he still talks to his mom every day. After Steller was done, the man looked in a mirror. “I look good!” he said.
So far, Steller has given about 30 such haircuts to people around the city. And she is keenly aware of the power of her cleanup job.
“It’s more than a haircut,” she says. “I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people and build relationships.” Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. “Part of what broke my heart was just how lonely people looked.” she says. “I thought maybe I’d go around and ask if people want free haircuts. I can’t fix their problems, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment.”
Steller listens to people’s stories of loss, addiction, and struggle to get back on their feet. And it all began with a belief in simple acts of kindness, such as a free haircut. “The way you show up in the world matters,” says Steller. “You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.”

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题:每小题2分, 满分10分)
Yesterday my older neighbor, who takes care of part of our garden with great difficulty and efforts, was in deep shock. Obviously > my cats had left droppings (粪便)in his perfect flower beds.
Fortunately, my husband and I weren't at home when this happened, so he vented his anger on my friend , Katherine. She was kind enough to listen to him and to go down into the garden with him to have a look. She even took a picture!
When I got home, she had left a message on my answering machine about the incident. Having heard it was about my cats again, my stomach turned. Last year, he got so upset that he threatened to put rat traps on the roof, hoping that would warn me to keep my cats indoors. So, I was a little worried.
However, I couldn't help but laugh when I heard Katherine tell me what the whole incident was all about. I understand gardening is important to my neighbor and that he keeps his garden perfect to comfort his soul.
So when I saw him in the garden days later, I went over to talk to him.
And the talk turned out to be quite nice. I was really surprised to find that I had the wisdom not to respond to his comments on my cats.
Instead, I had conversations with him about the beautiful flowers he had planted, the color combinations, and the care he took in creating such a sense of order. I tried to convey my understanding and appreciation without arguing or talking down to him.
I was really amazed how that talk turned out. We haven't had a conversation like that for over a year!

When I was in Grade 4, I got my first diary as a present from my mother. It made me feel very important because it was a precious gift to me in the year when a printed diary was rare. During the first week of my life as a diary owner, I kept looking at it. My heart filling with pride. In the second week, I suddenly felt nervous. I had not written a single word is the diary. And now each page seemed to be looking at me in sorrow for the way it was being gored, so I decided to keep an account of how I spent the day at school.
I kept my promise to the diary, every day after coming back from school, I would take out the diary, open the page dated for that day and write about what happened but a stranger thing happened. But a strange thing happened—each page kinked dull, instead of looking as if it came straight out of a famous writer's book.
I recently read a 4000-year-old account of a young boy's day in school. It surrounded almost the same thing as mine! This boy was from Summer. The Sumerians, as they were called invented a lot of things. They constructed the first cities. They invested writing an idea that children must go to a place like school for education.
What was the account of the boy's day in school like Well almost like mine but 4,000 years ago! I read it is a book called, The Mammoth Book of How it Happened, by Jon E. Lewis. In a fascinating manner, he has put the important and usual things together into one collection, eye-witness accounts of moments in history, also eventful and ordinary.
The book told me that for schoolchildren anywhere in the world and probably at any time in history, school has always meant the same. Perhaps writing diaries too.
66. Why did the diary make the author feel important (no more than 20 words)
67. How did the author feel when he reads 4000-year-old account of a young boy's day
