Gu Fangzhou, a famous medical scientist, was born in June, 1926. Gu's family faced a difficult time with the sudden death of his father. He studied hard and finally entered Peking University as a medical student in 1944. After graduation, Gu made the decision to work to help improve public health.
In 1955, polio broke out in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. It paralyzed(使瘫痪) 1,680 people, mostly children aged below seven. It spread to neighboring areas and resulted in 466 deaths. It not only tasted better but was more available for most people and easier to keep. In order to test the vaccine, Gu himself tried the vaccine and later his one-month-old son was vaccinated. This inspired his team to vaccinate their kids. They became the first group of people in China to try a polio vaccine. “If we don't have faith in what we produce, how can others believe in it?” said Gu.
Gradually, the sugar-coated polio vaccine was made available in China. It saved millions of people, especially kids, from being disabled. In 2000, the World Health Organization(WHO) announced that China was already a polio-free country. “We feel satisfied. I can tell people that I tried my best, and your kids will no longer get polio,” said Gu. “That's all we hoped for.”

(2022 长春三模)Shi Guangyin is one of the winners of the July 1 Medal. He is a villager from Dingbian county (县), Shaanxi Province. Dingbian lies on the side of the Maowusu Desert. In the past, sandstorms often destroyed houses and crops. Many local people had to leave the place to keep away from the terrible conditions.
In the 1970s, when the government called on people to green the desert, Shi decided to plant trees to fight sandstorms. To raise money to buy young trees, he sold almost all the things in his home. He also encouraged many villagers to go into Maowusu for a greener future.
However, it was not an easy thing. Only a tenth of the young trees that they had planted were alive at first. Some villagers felt disappointed and lost heart. But Shi said he would never give up.
The following years, Shi made several trips to ask for suggestions of experts in other places. He also led the villagers to try new ways to take care of the young trees. Finally, his hard work paid off. More than 80 percent of trees grew well in the hard environment. The yellow desert gradually turned into green forests. They've finally built a “Green Great Wall” of more than 50 kilometers in the desert. People always kindly call Shi “Uncle in the Desert”.
Now, the forest coverage (覆盖率) in Dingbian has risen from 3.8 percent in 1980 to 33.5 percent today. The annual(每年的) income of the villagers has increased from 300 yuan in 1984 to more than 30,000 yuan now.
