第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分 50 分)
第一节(共 15 小题:每小题 2.5 分,满分 37.5 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Five-year-old Willard Wigan struggled to tell the difference between an M and a W or a 6 and a 9.
Unfortunately, his school teacher knew nothing about dyslexia(阅读障碍症), a learning disability that can
make letters and numbers confusing. She didn’t try to help him.
Not surprisingly, Willard didn’t like school. Usually, his mind drifted—to playing outside, to his dog
Maxie, or to the ants that lived near his family’s garden shed. Willard was especially curious about those ants.
He felt like them—small and insignificant. Thus, when he noticed some ants trying to build a house, he
decided to help them! Willard constructed a little building. Then he sprinkled(撒) sugar inside to encourage
the ants to move in. When they did, Willard built more houses.
At school, Willard still struggled, but now he knew he could do something special. Maybe he wasn’t a
failure after all. If he had trouble with his reading or math, Willard would later go home and create tiny
furniture for the ant houses. He even built an ant school, with tiny swings, ladders, seesaws, and a
2
merry-go-round. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began to grow in his heart.
At age nine, Willard began carving faces on toothpicks. He discovered that his ability improved when
he held his breath as he worked. When he quit school at age 15 to help support his family, Willard still spent
his spare time carving. His confidence grew as more people appreciated his talent. Eventually, he quit his
factory job to pursue his dream of becoming one of the best artists in the world. Now, years later, Willard
carves the tiniest artwork in the world! His sculptures are so small that several can fit on a period at the end
of a sentence.
Because of their beauty and rarity, his sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man. But he says,
“Success isn’t about material things like an expensive watch or a costly ring; It’s about keeping trying and
achieving your dreams.”
Willard Wigan, micro sculptor, has done just that. The man who felt small as a boy has shown the world
that something small can really be BIG.
21. Which of the following best describes Willard’s teacher
A. Confused. B. Impatient. C. Unhelpful. D. Careless.
22. Why did Willard become interested in building homes for ants
A. Because he had a love for little things.
B. Because he was absent-minded in class.
C. Because he wouldn’t have to struggle at school.
D. Because he thought they both seemed unimportant.
23. What can we infer from the 4th paragraph
A. Willard gave up his study in school to pursue his dream.
B. Willard became a best artist because he quit the factory job.
C. Willard was able to carve small artwork in a short period of time.
D. People’s appreciation for his works helped build up Willard’s confidence.
24. Which of the following may Willard agree with
A. Failure is the mother of success.
B. Success belongs to those who don’t give up.
C. Dreaming big is the key to achieving your goals.
D. Talent is more important for success than hard work.

One day in 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the
northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it
was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out
what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish—sand eels—
lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen solid.
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in
the North Sea, which stretches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall
from the sky and land in Sunderland
Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout. Waterspouts
3
can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful; anything less
than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has
been taken into them for long distances-sometimes over 150 kilometers. It's very cold up there and
everything soon freezes solid.
For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through
waterspouts. In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down in Japan. In 2012, prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka.
In 2017, fish fell in Mexico.
It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell
on your head! With climate change, global warming and many reports of terrible natural disasters, will the
time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs
25. What was the rain like on the day in 1918
A. It was very heavy. B. It fell around England.
C. It lasted quite a long time. D. It caused many human deaths.
26. What do we know about the sand eels that landed in Sunderland
A. They were few in number. B. They came in different sizes.
C. They were still alive when landing. D. They probably came from the North Sea.
27. What does the underlined word " them" in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Clouds. B. Waterspouts. C. Strong winds. D. The waters of the sea.
28. According to the last paragraph, what does the author probably care about most
A. Environment. B. Health. C. Animals. D. Weather.
C
Have you ever imagined that your simple T-shirt could cool you down by up to 5℃ in these hot summer
days Thanks to a recent discovery, the possibility is getting closer. While there are many alternatives that
manage to keep the body warm, this amazing invention aims to offer real relief for those who are eager to
feel comfortable and fresh in the outdoors in extremely hot days.
Its inventors, engineers Ma Yaoguang of Zhejiang University and Tao Guangming of Huazhong
University of Science and Technology in China, took a completely innovative approach. They designed a
special textile(纺织物)that can absorb body heat and re-emi(t 重发出)its energy into space as mid-infrared
radiation (MIR).This textile cools both the objects and their surroundings through a technique that is known
as radiative cooling, SCIENCE reveals. This means that even when it looks like you are wearing a regular
shirt, you are actually wearing a device that works like a mirror.
Research conducted at Stanford University in 2017 had already managed to cool the wearer by 3℃, but
this previous trial was limited. So researchers still need to test the new approach to determine how
effectively the new fabric cools while the wearers are standing or walking, and not directly facing the sky,
like in their trials. They also need to examine and measure how well it works when T-shirts are not in close
contact with the skin.
Inventors Yaoguang and Guangming are now looking out for textile manufacturers(制造商)and
clothing brands that are interested in using their fabric. They estimate that the new material will increase
clothing manufacturing costs by just 10 percent. “We can make it with mass production, which means
4
everybody can get a T-shirt and the cost is basically the same as their old stuff,” Yaoguang said.
So if you are an athlete or simply someone that has to deal with the extremely high temperatures, be
patient because your days of feeling hot and bothered may be coming to an end!
29. What is the purpose of the new invention
A. To warm up people’s body. B. To detect the wearers’ temperature.
C. To cool people off in hot weather. D. To protect clothes from becoming wet.
30. How does the special product work
A. By turning sunlight into energy. B. By sending out absorbed heat.
C. By keeping heat out completely. D. By using light colors to reflect sunlight.
31. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The invention needs further testing. B. The previous studies lack evidence.
C. The new fabric has a good cooling effect. D. The new fabric applies to various situations.
D
Western fashion brands have a design problem with Chinese characters, or hanzi. They still disappoint
Chinese customers with the way they use Chinese writing on their products.
The most common mistakes suggest there is not enough research and cultural understanding. In 2015, a
Burberry scarf embroidered (刺绣) with the Chinese character fu, for good luck, designed to celebrate
Chinese New Year, came under fire for showing the character upright instead of upside down, as it's
traditionally shown in China.
Even the fonts (字体) are a problem. In May, Dior, one of the world’s leading fashion brands, started a
special service for customers to have their Chinese names embroidered on Book Tote handbags. When
images of some Chinese stars carrying the customized handbags were shown on social media, the
Chinese fashion community expressed their disappointment. Many believed the font on Dior’s handbags,
Source Han Sans (commonly used in Microsoft and Google), showed little artistic taste and looked cheap.
Source Han Sans can be found everywhere in everyday life, such as street signs; the font is usually
considered cheap.
It's not all disappointment, though. Experimentation and careful research have brought positive results
for brands coming close to hanzi. Consider the logo (标志) created for Prada Rong Zhai, an old building
repaired and owned by the Prada Group in Shanghai. The Rong Zhai type was created by 2x4 (a New
York-based design studio) by using the Roman letters in the original Prada logo to create the Chinese
characters. The result is a unique logo that suggests both lettered strictness and a classic Prada style. The
type’s West-meet-East mix won broad admiration among Chinese customers online.
One way to keep up to date is to team up with creatives and artists of the country to create designs that
can be more acceptable to Chinese customers. Joining forces with local partners can also avoid
misunderstandings that happen when a design team doesn't know Chinese culture very well.
32. Why was the Chinese-style design of the Book Tote handbags less acceptable
A. The design led to a higher price. B. The design looked old-fashioned.
C. Chinese customers disliked the font. D. Few handbags in China show names.
33. What is special about the logo of Prada Rong Zhai
5
A. It brings together Western and Chinese writing.
B. It is created to introduce Chinese hanzi culture.
C. It was designed by online supporters of the company.
D. It invited a famous Chinese star to write the characters.
34. What does the author expect Western designers to do
A. Try to create more fashionable fonts.
B. Show more hanzi in Western culture.
C. Find the causes of cultural differences.
D. Work together with Chinese designers.
35. What does the text mainly want to tell us
A. International brands spreading Chinese culture.
B. Western fashion’s struggle with Chinese writing.
C. Western designers’ research on Chinese characters.
D. The connection between Chinese customers and hanzi.
第二节(共 5 小题:每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Kids nowadays have computers in the classroom, more than one television in their homes, and pads in
their backpacks. It seems impossible to separate them from digital equipment. 36
Establish rules around screen time early on. Before giving your child their first smart phone, make
sure that both you and your child learn about digital responsibility, signs of cyber bullying (网络暴力) and
coping ways. 37 Basic, but important ones, can include not responding to texts from unknown
numbers and never sharing their personal information online or with anyone they don’t know.
38 When establishing contracts and limits on technology with your child, remember they will
feel more willing to follow rules when you do, too. Telling your child to avoid screens if you are constantly
attached to one is likely to result in tension and frustration. As a parent, it’s important to be a good role
model for your child, not only with regards to technology but within everyday life.
Stress the value of physical play. I understand that we can’t keep children from enjoying screen time.
39 Try to replace screen time with physical activity, and even reward your child with items they enjoy
if they reduce their time on digital devices. 40 .
A. Lead by example.
B. As a result, their study and health suffer.
C. Make a rule for the whole family to agree to.
D. But we can find a happy medium where we enable kids to be kids.
E. Here, as a father of four, I’d like to share my thoughts with parents.
F. This shared information helps your child fully understand and respect rules.
G. In this way, they rely less on technology and seek happiness from creative play.
