When I was a child, we lived next door to the Schonfield Home, People who got too old to take care of themselves lived there. I was a regular visitor and enjoyed spending time with the old people there.
One day, a very old lady named Mrs. Kurtz moved to the Schonfield Home. She seemed sad all the time. For days, I had never seen her smile or laugh. My parents learned that she had no family or friends.
Weeks later, I was visiting the home again. And I saw her sitting alone, looking unusually depressed(消沉的). Mrs. Smith, one of the old people told me that Mrs. Kurtz had turned eighty-nine, and that she was upset to be celebrating another birthday all alone without any cards or gifts. She truly believed there was no one in the world who loved her.
This moved me deeply, and I started to create a plan in my mind. I ran home and raced to my room. I took out my piggy bank that I always valued. And I poured out all the money that I had received on birthdays and other special occasions. I had been saving money for a new bike. Although the money wasn’t enough to buy a bike, it was enough for what I wanted to do then.
I raced down the stairs. My mother was cleaning the house. I walked to her and explained what I was about to do. And she smiled at me proudly. She planted a kiss on my cheek and said, ”I must be the luckiest mother in the world to have such a caring daughter." My mother stopped what she was doing.

Josie wanted to learn to bake a cake on her own. She asked if Uncle Dave would show her how Her mother’s birthday was only two days away. If Josie made a cake all by herself, it would be a wonderful surprise.
On Saturday morning, Josie arrived at the bakery just as it was closing. The bakery always closed early on the weekend so Uncle Dave could walk his dogs. “Ready, Josie ” Uncle Dave asked “Ready!” Josie answered.
First, Uncle Dave had Josie get all the ingredients (原料) and line them up on the work table. Then he showed her how to measure flour and sugar so that she had the exact right amount. She added these ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Next, Uncle Dave tapped an egg on the side of the bowl to crack it. “Be careful not to get any bits of shell in the bowl,” he said.
Josie tapped her egg very gently on the bowl. It didn’t crack. She tried again, and this time the shell came apart. She pulled the egg apart over the bowl and watched the yellow egg yolk drop into the flour.
Now it was time to stir. “This is fun!” said Josie.

The father was angry. “If the only reason you asked that is that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.”
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. “How dare he ask such questions only to get some money ” he thought to himself.
After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son ” he asked.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away any possible robbers (抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My hearing aid was a box that was tied to my shoulders and hung from my neck. I carried it because when I was young I became deaf. After consulting(协商) with a lot of educational experts, doctors, and parents of other deaf children, my parents decided to send me to a school where all of my classmates and teachers would have normal hearing, instead of sending me to a private school for the deaf. So I was the only deaf child at Blue Creek Elementary School.
I experienced great anxiety throughout Elementary School because, in addition to the problems of “fitting in” with the other students, I also struggled with most of my school work. I seemed to spend every spare moment doing homework just so I could keep up. I could feel that my parents and teachers were deeply disappointed in me because of my academic struggles. The teachers didn’t know what to do with me nor did they show much interest in any of my poor performances.
My hearing disability required me to ask everyone from time to time, “What did he or she say ” I worried that everyone would soon grow tired of repeating everything back to me. When the kids made fun of me, I had no way but to accept it. I was sure that I was a bad person; my self-esteem(自尊心) was quite low. I saw myself as an ugly kid wearing a box around his neck who wasn’t even smart enough to keep up with the rest of the other kids.
Mrs. Jordan, my 5th grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple two-word phrase. One morning, she asked the class a question. I read her lips(嘴唇) from my front-row seat and immediately raised my hand. I couldn’t believe it—for once I knew the answer.

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The skies were dark. Rain fell in big drops. Thunder and lightning flashed across the skies. I shivered with cold and fear as I walked through the streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren carrying their heavy schoolbags and rushing home. I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and slabs of metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with planks.
I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard some sounds. It sounded like children crying. I quickly turned back and went back to the place from where the sounds came. I was horrified! To my shock, I found that two small children, about eight years old, had fallen into the gaping hole on the road. The children were so scared that their faces were pale, crying for help. They were running back home when suddenly the planks moved away with the force of the rushing water. They fell into the hole by accident. I could barely see the children, as it was dark all around me. I got down and tried to reach them with one of my hands, but it was too deep to reach them. I comforted the children with words and told them that I was going to get help.
I was not sure of what to do or where to go but decided to go to the nearest house for help. I knew the man, Mr. Lee, who lived there. He was a kind-hearted man who was always ready to help others. I decided to turn to him for help. It was the only way that I could think of.

On his first day on the job, his co-workers judged him because the sight of an 84-year-old pizza delivery man was undoubtedly a rare one. But Easton didn’t care.
After delivering the first two orders that day, Easton was on his way to deliver the third one, when he realized his car was low on gas. He stopped at a gas station, worried he would be late for his next delivery. Determined to make it on time, Easton grabbed the steering wheel and drove as fast as he could. However, as he reached one of the main roads, a police car stopped him.
When Officer Jenkins and Officer Matthew walked up to Easton’s car, they were shocked to see an 84-year-old behind the wheel of a pizzeria car. Moreover, they didn’t expect an old man to be speeding.
“You see,” Easton said nervously, “I am running late for pizza delivery. We have a policy of delivering pizza within 45 minutes, or I’ll have to pay for it out of my pocket, and I need money for my wife’s treatment. I hope you understand…”
Officer Matthew looked at Easton’s teary eyes and trembling hands and felt deeply sad for him. However, he couldn’t go against his line of duty. They had to give him a ticket anyway. Easton was late for the delivery that day, prompting his manager to deduct(扣除) it from his salary. He was also warned that he would have to leave if he repeated the mistake.

参考答案
1.Paragraph 1:
And we went to a gift shop together. There we bought a lovely heart-shaped musical jewelry box. Then we bought a birthday card and a beautiful bouquet of red roses. I wrote the following words on the card: “To the best lady at the Schonfield Home, Happy birthday and all the best! From your neighbor who loves you very much, Mimi”. With all our gifts, we headed for the Schonfield Home. And as expected, we found Mrs. Kurtz sitting alone on a chair.
Paragraph 2:

When I said goodbye to her a while later, Mrs. Kurtz was still smiling, and at that moment, I noticed that my heart was smiling along with hers. At that moment, I understood a kind act is often its own reward.

But, when she called on me, I was afraid. I took a deep breath, stood up slowly and answered Mrs. Jordan’s question in a low voice. Then came the silence. I felt so nervous that I lowered my head and did not dare to see the reaction of the teacher and other students. I would never forget what happened next. Mrs. Jordan pointed directly at me. With shinning eyes and a wide smile, she cried: “That’s right, Stephen!” Surprise and then joy overwhelmed me.
For the first time in my young life, I was a star in my class. I became the focus of my class, with everyone looking at me. My confidence soared like never before.
