I first became conscious of my body image last year in fifth grade. One day I was walking by my mirror getting ready for bed and I noticed that my stomach looked big. I started to really hate that and think I was fat even though my family always told me how skinny I was. It wasn’t only my stomach—I started to think my nose was ugly and that my laugh was disgusting. I was even afraid to laugh or smile in public.
Then, in the sixth grade, a popular guy in my class named Luke made it worse. He told his table group that my body looked swollen in skinny jeans. I heard about it from someone else, but then Luke even told me to my face! I couldn’t stop thinking about what Luke had said. Even worse, I started to believe it was true, and I hid my skinny jeans all the way at the bottom of my drawer.
I know I cared too much about what other people said and thought about me. I guess I just wanted to be liked. In fact, I really wish I could have just brushed off comments like that, but I couldn’t change my personality and what I care about that easily.
Luke’s mean comment affected me in a big way. I lost confidence in more than just my body—I started to think that I didn’t matter and that I didn’t have a place in the world. To make it worse, some people also started telling me that I was not meant to be an author, which is what I really want to be. That especially hurt and I started to feel really sad all the time.
I hadn’t really told anyone how I’d been feeling until a couple of months ago when I got a call from my cousin. I’m really close to her, and hearing her voice and laugh made me feel so good inside. I thought about how I used to be that way too, and how I was so sick of feeling sad.

My first life began in November,1904.I was happy and in excellent health. Then I got married and became the father of two lovely girls. I had a good job and a beautiful home.Life was a pleasant dream.
The dream ended suddenly. Then began my second life.
I suffered from a rare disease that affected my motor abilities, first my right arm and leg, then the whole body. Every day after work I climbed up the 14 steps leading up from the garage to the kitchen door, lifting one foot up one step and then dragging the other painfully after it. Repeating the process 14 times was a huge effort for me.As time passed, I became more upset.I wondered why I had been chosen to suffer.
Then on a dark night in August, 1971, I began my third life. Raindrops were beating down hard on the car when I drove slowly down one of the less-traveled roads .Suddenly the wheel(方 向盘)jumped in my hands as one of the tires burst with a bang . I fought the car to a stop and sat there as the terrible nature of the situation swept over me.It was impossible for me to change that tire! Absolutely impossible!
A thought that a passing motorist might stop was deserted at once. Why should anyone I knew I wouldn’t! Then I remembered that a short distance up a little side road was a house.I started the engine and drove slowly along until I came to the house. Lighted windows welcomed me as I pulled into the driveway and sounded the horn(喇叭) .
The door opened and a little girl stood there, looking at me. I rolled down the window and called out that I had a flat tire and needed someone to change it for me because I had a crutch (拐杖) and couldn’t do it myself.

A Son’s Love
Our church congregation in Toronto has a way of assisting those who have financial difficulties without making the recipient feel shame or guilt. Money is dropped into an offering box with only the name of the recipient on the envelope. The envelopes are then distributed to those members without them knowing the name of the giver.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. We did not talk about our financial difficulty with anyone. The only reason our children knew was because we had to cut back on many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware of the extent of our need, nor of how much their father and I were suffering because of it. We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve.
Our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I knew that we would have to look for outside help. Just as we reached the point of despair, our church gave us a gift envelope that had been left in the offering box. We were overjoyed to receive a very substantial amount of money, enough to bring us through that desperate time. We couldn’t help but wonder who had given such a generous gift. We were extremely relieved and enormously grateful.
A year later, our seventeen-year-old son was applying for a student loan so he could attend university. It was then we discovered that his savings account was almost empty. His father and I were very disturbed by this. We had trusted him to put part of his wages from his part-time job into the bank towards his education. From the time he was nine years old he had been a paper carrier for The Toronto Star, and he had worked very hard for his small earnings.

Peter started working from home when his wife Annika passed away years back. Although he would take his daughter Mary to school every morning, she would usually walk home with her friend Anna every afternoon, He would then sit in the hallway, waiting for her to arrive.
In the past month, Peter noticed that Mary would always return home with her clothes dirtied. He didn’t think much of this, as he thought maybe she played with other kids at school on the field or at the playground. However, he started to notice that Mary would no longer walk with Anna. Mary usually came back around twenty to thirty minutes after Anna.
He asked Anna’s mom what happened. “The girls are having one of those quarrels (争吵) again. You know, teenage girl stuff.” Anna’s mom said. This didn’t sound good to Peter, so the next day, he decided to see where Mary would go after school.
Peter waited inside his car from across the school. He saw Mary leaving, and her clothes were not dirty. He started the car and slowly followed her as she walked. After a while, she turned towards an old abandoned house and entered. Peter quickly parked the car and ran towards the house to follow her inside where he saw Mary approaching an old man in dirty clothes
“Mary! Get away from him!” he shouted, Mary jumped at her dad’s loud voice and dropped the bag of food she had brought for the man.
“But Dad…” she started to say. Before she knew it, Peter lifted her from the ground and brought her inside the car.
“Mary, you can’t be walking into abandoned houses and talking to homeless men like that! What if he did something to hurt you ” he said angrily. “Promise me, Mary. You’re not going back there.”
Hesitantly (迟疑地), Mary nodded. “I promise. But Daddy, can you please get the drawings he made for me Please, I want the drawings,” she said.
Mary wouldn’t stop crying, so after he dropped her home, Peter went back to the abandoned house. “My daughter won’t stop talking about some drawings she left over here,” Peter said to the man.
The man quietly handed him pieces of paper. Peter was surprised to see that they were portraits (肖像) of his late wife.

Almost all of my holidays were spent with my grandpa. My grandpa was a retired army officer and the years in the army had made him a very tough person, which helped him a lot in fighting with cancer for a long time. Silver and golden stars on his shoulders and medals on his chest in grandma’s old photo albums reflected the marks of his distinguished service and numerous adventures. Grandpa had fine qualities and was a real personality. He was strict with his family, me included, as well as himself.
In our ancestral house there was a big pond as was common in bygone Bengali homes with lots of trees and bushes. Both my grandparents were fond of our so-called garden. One morning our new neighbor saw my grandpa planting two trees on both sides of our main gate, which still stand tall today. Across the street our new neighbor also got the same kind of tree and planted the trees exactly on both sides of his gate too.
My grandpa didn’t often give enough amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give his full attention to them, while our neighbor gave a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well. My grandpa’s plants were simple but looked good. But our neighbor’s plants were much fuller and greener.
Normally, during April and May, we have short but violent thunderstorms called “Kalboishakhi”. One late evening during a Kalboishakhi we had showers with strong winds, which continued right throughout that night. Next morning along with my grandparents I came out to inspect the damage to our garden. I saw our neighbor was there in his garden too, but looked upset as his plants were uprooted. But, our plants were not damaged and were standing firm on the ground.

It was the first week of the summer vacation, and Parisa was already ready to be back at school. Not everyone she knew liked school, but Parisa loved learning new things. Even more than that, she loved school because she got to be with her friends all day long. Parisa was an only child, and she thought it was too quiet at home.
Now her two best friends in the neighborhood were out of town for two weeks, and to Parisa, it seemed like two years. What would she do Sitting on the wide front step of her house, she looked through her favorite kids magazine. The word “contest” caught her eye. “Create Your Own Magazine!” the headline read.
Parisa loved magazines, but it had never occurred to her that she could create one herself. The article said contestants must send in an eight-page magazine with handwritten articles and hand-drawn pictures- nothing was printed by computer.
Parisa returned to her room and lay down on the floor next to her cat. This was what she did whenever she needed to think of really good ideas. She closed her eyes and imagined all sorts of magazines. She imagined magazines about bikes, skating, ballet, soccer, dessert ... But after much thought, she knew what she wanted to feature in her magazine—her neighborhood, for there were always interesting things. She would call it “The Tall Pines Gazette” and fill it with news.
She found a notebook and a pen and left her room. Then she found her grandmother at the door and told her about the contest. “Granny, I’m going to be a reporter for a while, ” Parisa announced. “I’m going to see if there’s any news. ” Her grandmother smiled, “ Well, good luck, honey. You do like asking questions, so I bet you won’t have too much trouble finding news. ” Two hours later, Parisa ran into the house. “Granny, I’ve got so much news that I can’t fit it into eight pages!”

Eugene Pugliese, a heroic firefighter in New York, would not have imagined that after more than three decades, the little girl he once saved would track him down and express her appreciation in person for what he had done for her.
That was a bitterly cold December afternoon. Pugliese was fixing a broken pipe in the SoHo neighbourhood when he was approached by a man who said there was a fire down the block. Pugliese followed him, taking off at a sprint(快速奔跑). The man guided him to the sixth-floor apartment that was blowing out thick smoke, and Pugliese went in without hesitation.
Upon entering the smoky apartment, Pugliese noticed and rescued a woman who then said her child was inside the apartment. The woman kept screaming, “My baby Taylor! My baby Taylor!” So Pugliese went back inside, crawling(爬) through the burning room and blinding smoke, and found a young girl who was unconscious. Immediately, he rushed her down the stairs and gave her mouth-to-mouth to bring her round. To Pugliese’s relief, she woke up and started to cry. Then she was taken by ambulance to hospital for further examination.
Soon, the touching story made headlines in the local newspaper. People were full of praise for Pugliese’s bravery. But he just said “I was just in the right place at the right time”. After that, Pugliese didn’t see Taylor ever again, but he always thought of her and wondered how she was going.
Taylor, now a registered nurse in Alexandria, Virginia, has never forgotten him, too. She has kept the newspaper article documenting her being rescued by Pugliese from a burning New York apartment since she was a child. As she got older, she wished she could find Pugliese and thank him face to face—a desire that grew stronger after she became an emergency room nurse, as she learned how rare it was to hear from patients she met on the worst days of their lives again.

Jenny had hearing problems when she was four years old. Several surgeries later, Jenny was found having a severe joint disease at seven. She could not put pressure on the back parts of her feet, so she walked on tiptoe(脚尖), and when the pain became unbearable, someone had to carry her. Once when she suddenly experienced sharp pain, her friends got her up and carried her from class to class.
All through grade school, and on into high school, Jenny suffered, yet never complained. She took her medicine and wrapped her feet in steaming towels until the pain eased. As soon as she could bear the pain Jenny immediately carried on, as though she was free of pain. She always wore a smile on her face and expressed her love for others.
Jenny had never been a cheerleader or competed in a sport. She could not even take part in a gym class, though she took the same health class four years in a row, through which she could pass with a substitute credit each year.
Jenny continued to have one surgery after another on her ears all through school. Her hearing improved and she taught herself to read lips. She also carried a pillow(枕头)to school so that she could relieve the pain when she sat down. Gradually, Jenny began attending every football game, cheering the team on.
Then came her senior year. She saw documents about scholarships on the school website when visiting it one day. According to the statement, she would be considered for scholarships; however, school activities, especially sports, could often mean the difference between receiving an award and losing out. She continued to read other notices and found an ad from the football team, which stated that the football manager was seeking for an assistant, who would take on ancillary(辅助的)services like taking charge of the team’s supplies communication and security.

“All done!” Stephen placed a bowl by the sink. “Let’s swim.” “Swimming! I just can’t get used to it in December,” Martine said. All Stephen had heard since his American cousin, Martine, arrived in Australia were stories about snow and fireplaces. Stephen had only seen snow in pictures.
Suddenly, a loud splash (落水声) came from the backyard. “Mr. Baker’s dog, Max, must be taking a quick swim again.” Stephen rolled his eyes upward. Martine followed Stephen as he went to the pool and stopped, truly shocked. In the water was a round and hairy ball that looked like a wet bear.” A koala bear!” Martine sounded happy as the animal splashed water over his ears. “In fact, you know, he isn’t a bear.” Stephen told her. “He’s a marsupial (有袋动物), like a kangaroo.”
Martine and Stephen sat on the edge of the pool and watched. The koala swam, and then floated on his back until he headed for the opposite side of the pool across from Stephen and Martine. The koala tried to pull himself out, but the pool wall was too slippy.
“He can’t get out,” Martine said. “We’ve got to help him.” Stephen kicked off his shoes and stepped quietly into the pool. By the time Stephen reached the frightened animal, the koala was moving to the metal ladder (梯子). Stephen put his arms under the koala and gave him a push. Martine lifted the animal onto the solid ground. The koala shook himself before climbing across the grass and up the nearest tree.
“We’ve never seen a koala in the pool before,” Stephen said, “but koalas love to swim. My teacher said that backyard pools are often the places where koalas have accidents in Australia.” “What if he falls in when no one is at home ” Martine asked. “All the koala needs is something rough to hang on to,” Stephen replied, “so that he can pull himself right out.” After hearing what happened, Stephen’s mom said, “There is some leftover carpeting in the house. You can use that.”

The yellow light flashed on my dashboard(仪表盘), showing the words: Maintenance Required. “I don’t have time for this,” I thought as I sped along the freeway. “I’ve got two jobs, and a family to take care of, dogs to feed and exercise to get in. When can I squeeze in a four-hour window without the use of my car ”
In fact, for days I drove with the light flashing. I felt exhausted, juggling(尽量兼顾)a new job that had me driving all over the city, eating in my car and carrying piles of files with me. I was drowning in my “to-do” and this “Maintenance Required” was putting me over the top.
The light now had my full attention. It was obvious that I was going to have to change my entire day. As a contract therapist(治疗师), I was only paid for the patients I saw, so canceling my appointments was going to cost me a lot, but so would ignoring the light. As I reached for my cell phone to call the office, it rang from the depth of my pocket. My patient called to cancel his appointment.
Therefore, I made it to the dealer’s in time to drop off my car. I had four hours to kill. I thought about waiting at the dealer’s, but that seemed like punishment. My car needed maintenance and so did my soul. I found out that the dealer offered a bus ride that could drop me at a mall. Although I had no love for shopping, I knew that the beach was about a mile from the mall. I had my sneakers, my iPod and my phone, so I set off on my adventure.
I discovered that everything, including waiting and distance, seemed shorter and closer when I mentally used the word “only”. It would only be four hours and I would have my car again.

参考答案
1. Then I started telling her and it all came out. She seemed so surprised and said how special I was. She started listing all my good qualities, saying I shouldn’t listen to people who say mean things because they were probably just feeling bad about themselves or trying to look cool. Definitely, she added, I shouldn’t let them tell me how to feel about myself or my body. It was like a sudden wake-up call: focusing on what other people thought of me only made things even worse, and I must learn to love and accept myself for who I am.
When I went back to my bedroom, I looked at myself in the mirror for a long time. I saw what I had never seen in myself before, like my nice grey eyes, my cute smile, and the fact that I am beautiful in my own way. I know some people might still make hurtful comments again, and sometimes I may feel like I am fat again, but next time I will be prepared. I will only think well of myself even when I am feeling sad, and stand up for myself when someone puts me down. In my eyes, I am perfect myself—no one can change that.

2.She went into the house and later came out followed by an old man. Bundled in a raincoat and a hat, he asked me to sit there comfortably, and started working hard in the storm. It seemed to me that he was awfully slow and I was beginning to become impatient. Eventually, it was done, I felt the car bump as the jack was removed, and then he was standing at my car window. “The tires have been changed,” he told me solemnly. “You can drive away safely.”
I held out a five-dollar bill to her grandpa, but got no response. When I lowered the window and handed him the money, I found the old man a cripple, wet through! Shame penetrated and I was sick with an intensity I had never felt before. How could I sat comfortably in the car while an old man did all the work for me in the soaking rain! It was also at the moment that I realized I was filled with self-pity, indifference to the need of others and thoughtlessness. That night marked the beginning of my third life:I am trying to help others in my small way.

3.Anxious, I asked him to tell us where the money had gone. Hesitant and wordless, he didn’t dare to look directly into my eyes, but lowered his head, almost to his chest, with hands tightly clasped and face blushing. The scene that he kept so silent like a statue brought more anxiety to my already burning heart. Countless doubts and speculations roared in my messy mind, every nerve in my body yelling at me to hound him for the answer. “Tell the truth!” I urged, determined to find out where the money had gone. Then, over his face came a torn look.
Finally, in tears, and with great reluctance, my son told us the truth. “I sent it to the offering box with your names,” he murmured, the salty water pooling in his eyes. His words suddenly hit me like lightning. I was glued to the spot, speechless, with a lump in my throat—it had taken my son years to save that money. He had given it to us willingly—without telling us what he had done. The following moment witnessed me drawing my son into my arms, sobbing and apologizing. Never in my life had I been aware of my son’s love, silent but pure and deep, which had saved our family and now warmed my life like sunshine.

Weeping for Mary’s kindness, Peter asked curiously, “Is this the reason why you made her the drawings ” “Yes, she told me she missed her late mom so much. As a painter before, all I can do for her is to draw some pictures about her mom.”
Peter then asked the man if he wanted to work in an art shop nearby run by his friend. He wanted to be as helpful as his kind-hearted daughter. “Can I ” the old man just couldn’t believe what he heard. Peter later bought him some new clothes and took him home. The father knew these two sincere friends were worthy of more mutual companionship. Mary was overwhelmed by astonishment when she took over the drawings from the old man at the gate. In the portraits, her mom smiled gently, as if she was saying, “Helping others is helping ourselves.”

5.One possible version:
Seeing this, our neighbor was surprised and curious. He came up to my grandpa and asked with a touch of embarrassment, “How is this possible I actually looked after my plants better.” My grandpa had his signature smile on and replied, “What you did spared the plants the need to work themselves hard for anything. I gave them just certain water and let their roots do the rest to search for more. And their roots went deeper, which made their position stronger. That is why they survived.”
Grandpa’s explanations not only convinced the neighbor, but made me realize something. My grandpa was strict with me on many occasions with his do’s and don’ts, and that drove me to be independent and work hard for what I wanted, which, however, I’d rarely noticed. I became aware that anything easily got can go off much more easily. Still after a rainy night when the sun is clear and bright the next morning it reminds me of my grandpa’s words. The guidance has taken root in my mind and influences me all the way.

Parisa got down to working on her magazine. She wrote “The Tall Pines Gazette” in big, colorful letters on the front cover. After due consideration, she chose the news about Barky, her next door’s dog, as the first story. The process was smooth. Days later, Parisa finished all stories that covered a lot of ground, with hand-drawn pictures added to each one. She couldn’t believe how fast the days had flown by because of her project. Parisa was filled with pride and excitement when she sent it off to enter the contest.
A few weeks later, Parisa received a package from the kids magazine. To Parisa’s surprise and delight, “The Tall Pines Gazette” won first prize! The kids magazine had it printed and sent her some copies! She rushed to share them with her grandmother and her friends who had just returned from their vacations. They congratulated her and told her her magazine was really cool. Her neighbors were so impressed that they suggested Parisa keep her magazine going. Surely she happily agreed and she’s already had inspiration for the next issue!

7.A chance came recently when Taylor was appointed to help in a New York emergency room for weeks. “I must take this rare opportunity to find Pugliese and thank him in person,” Taylor murmured to herself. When packing her luggage, she packed the newspaper article too. For her, it was not just an article; it recorded the love and bravery of a noble soul. Though she was almost rushed off her feet, she squeezed every possible minute to track Pugliese down. Eventually, to her great relief, she came across an acquaintance of Pugliese’s, got Pugliese’s phone number and managed to fix an appointment with him.
Finally, the day of meeting came and Taylor went to Pugliese’s place in excitement. The moment she saw Pugliese, Taylor felt her eyes moistened. “Thank you so much, sir,” she said in a choked voice. “Had you not been there, I wouldn’t be here today.” Tears in his eyes, Pugliese took Taylor to the sofa and they had a hearty conversation, recalling the past experience of the fire and exchanging life stories. Learning Taylor has become a nurse, the retired firefighter felt very proud of her. Although time can make the article fade, the precious memory will never fade away, neither will the love among people.

8.One possible version:
Jenny decided to seize the chance. The football manager turned her down at first considering her health condition. After that, she began to bombard the manager, begging and promising. Impressed by her persistence, he finally gave in with the warning, “If you miss ONE game, you’re out!” Jenny nodded in excitement. Before each game, Jenny could be seen carrying big buckets of water to her teammates, with her pillow under the arm. She helped bandage knees, massaged backs and gave pep talks. She was continually at their beck and call, and it turned out to be one of the best years for the team in its history.
When asked why the team did so well that year, a player spoke of Jenny. “When we’re knocked down and can’t move, we look up and see Jenny, struggling across the field, dragging her buckets and carrying her pillow. It makes anything the rest of us suffer seem insignificant. We feel we have no excuse not to work hard,” he recalled. Finally, Jenny gained recognition and respect that she totally deserved, and she received a number of scholarships. Her favorite scholarship, however, was a small one from a sports club, because she thought it was of special and considerable significance to her.

9.Stephen and Martine found the carpet in a corner and carried it to the pool. Then they found some rope in the garage and tied one end of the rope to the carpet. After tying the other end of the rope to two poolside grab bars, they cut the carpet so that it extended into the pool, making sure it lay against the pool wall. “I hope it works,” said Stephen. Stephen and Martine waited and waited, but the koala was nowhere to be seen, and the “pool wall koala aid” was almost forgotten, which left Martine a bit disappointed.
Finally, there came the familiar splash several weeks later. Stephen and Martine looked at each other with the same thought. It could be Mr. Baker’s dog or... Martine rushed outside with Stephen. The water shone on the koala’s furry head. He swam around for a while, and then swam toward the carpet. Grabbing it with his front feet, he slowly pulled himself up and out of the water. With four feet planted firmly on the ground, he shook himself and ran off. Martine laughed. “I’ll always remember my trip to Australia and the swimming koala.” she said.

I plugged in my iPod and began to enjoy relaxing music from my yoga class. Then I listened to self-help and motivational music that I had heard before, but suddenly heard in a new way. As I walked. I dug my toes into the soft wet sand. I breathed in the salty fresh ocean air. I felt the warmth of the sun and the gentle touch of the wind. I was feeling so renewed and peaceful that I almost felt guilty. What a brilliant idea those carmakers had. I thought. Maintenance Required! If only we came with such a light.
My phone rang. It was the dealer letting me know my car was ready an hour early. “So soon ” I asked. “Will it be OK if I come in a couple of hours I am still working on a little maintenance of my own.” Hearing “Of course” on the phone, I said goodbye. Lost in natural beauty on the beach, I felt more and more refreshed. I suddenly realized the importance of taking care of ourselves.
