Our church charity in Toronto has a way of assisting those who have financial difficulties without making the receiver feel ashamed or guilty. They often dropped money into an offering box with only the name of the receiver on the envelope. The envelopes are then distributed to those members without them knowing the name of the giver.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. We did not talk about our financial difficulty with anyone. The only reason our children knew was that we had to cut back on many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware of the extent of our need, nor of how much their father and I were suffering because of it.We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve.
Unfortunately, our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I knew that we would have to look for outside help. Just as we reached the point of desperation, our church gave us a gift envelope that had been left in the offering box.We were overjoyed to receive a very large amount of money, enough to bring us through that desperate time.We couldn’t help but wonder who had given such a generous gift. We were extremely relieved and grateful.
A year later, our seventeen-year-old son was applying for a student loan so he could attend university. It was then that we discovered his savings account was almost empty. His father and I were very disturbed by this.We had trusted him to put part of his wages from his part-time job into the bank towards his education.Actually, from the time he was nine years old he had been a paper carrier for The Toronto Star, and he had worked very hard for his small earnings to achieve his university dream.

The shiny black sports car sat at the traffic lights. The driver’s window was down, and the driver was wearing a suit and dark sunglasses. It was an expensive car. Thomas Campbell knew that because he used to have one. But now he was sitting on a bench, which had served as his bed for the previous few nights, with no more than a pocket full of change to his name. The lights changed, the car sped off and Thomas sighed.
It had all happened in the space of a year. He was laid off from bis well-paid job when the economy took a turn for the worse. Although he was paid handsomely.he lived a lifestyle to match and always spent any raise or bonus on expensive but unnecessary things. Losing his job put pressure on his marriage and his wife left. Then he couldn’t make his mortgage (贷款) repayments. A few weeks later be found himself in a cheap hotel and a few months after that, in a sleeping bag under a bridge downtown.
As Thomas walked in the streets late that night.he thought about the man in the car and about whether be could improve his life again. He had grown up quite poor, so was used to not having much, but living outside was hard. Perhaps the hardest thing was how differently people treated him now when he didn’t have a suit or haircut. They often said negative things. Even worse than that was just treating him as invisible. Once he walked past someone he used to work with, they looked through him like he weren’t there, and it made him feel less than a human.
Then as be turned a corner, he heard the cries of a child from a second-storey window. He could see a little girl with a thick plume (缕) of smoke surrounding her. He looked about but no one was nearby. He shouted to the girl, but she was crying and coughing and couldn’t hear him. Then be heard another cry from inside. It was a baby.

My twin sister, Mary, and I lived together for eighteen years before we went to college. We’d known each other so much and always enjoyed shared time. We happily sang and danced together, had dinner and went to bed together, and discussed the maths problems and recited the poems together.
But one small thing couldn’t be shared smoothly and that’s the trouble with toothpaste.
Crest(佳洁士)made us give in and demanded to know what we were made of. You see, Mary likes to carefully fold and roll the toothpaste tube. I like to grab it in the middle and squeeze(挤). I might call her folding a bit too careful. She might consider my squeezing careless and rude. This difference in style may seem mild, but it caused the big trouble in the later days.
At first, it was a little joke. I’d squeeze. She’d roll. Ha, ha. I’d squeeze again. She’d roll again. Annoying. I’d squeeze even when I wasn’t brushing my teeth. She’d slip in to roll, roll, roll.
After slipping and squeezing, tip-toeing and rolling for two weeks, it was unavoidable that we finally met face to face in our tiny pink bathroom with our hands on the toothpaste. We actually yelled at each other. I may have even cried. Why was she so obsessive(过分的) Why was I so vindictive(报复性的) Why couldn’t she loosen up Why couldn’t I calm down Were we still talking about the toothpaste
The toothpaste had become more than something to brush our teeth with; it had become a symbol for aspects of our individual personalities that we did not always care to reveal. Maybe I was being a little vindictive. Maybe she was being a bit obsessive. Maybe it really didn’t matter how we dealt with the toothpaste. But maybe it did.

ALEX pedaled his bike along the country lane that led to his house. As he rounded a bend, the tips of the cattails that grew around Johnson’s Pond came into view. His dad took him canoeing there sometimes, and Alex loved it. The pond was always so alive with activity. Frogs croaked along the shore, dragonflies hunted among the cattails, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟) basking(晒太阳) on sunny rocks.
Alex was curious about the turtles he saw. One week, when it was too rainy to go canoeing, he and his dad went to the library to check out books on turtles. Alex learned that turtles don’t have warm blood like people do. That’s why they have to sit in the sun to warm themselves. Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided he would ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again.
Just then Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be.
And then, as Alex watched, the rock started to move.
When he rode his bike up to get a closer look, he saw that it wasn’t a rock at all. It was a large turtle crawled its way across the road. It had a bony, beak-shaped mouth and a long, jagged tail. Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
He also knew not to get too close. He had read that a snapping turtle has a powerful bite even though it doesn’t have teeth. It could even bite off someone’s finger. He stood at a distance and watched the turtle move slowly over the road.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up to move it safely to the grass. What could he do

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I occasionally would think of my dad. I flashed to Dad holding the handlebar and jogging alongside my bike until I felt ready to ride on my own. I saw him pulling up to my broken-down car at night and doing a quick fix. I thought of the hug we shared at my wedding. But what impressed me most was the grass cutting days. Dad was always full of advice, and he taught me one of the big lessons one summer was about having a strong work ethic.
Memories came flooding back. When my brother and I were growing up, we mowed yards during the summer to earn pocket change. Dad was our salesman. He told our neighbors about our service and offered a price they could not refuse. My brother and I got﹩10 per yard. However, I later found out that our friends were charging $20 or more for the same amount of work.
Every time we headed out to mow lawns, Dad was there to watch. I used to wonder why he came with us. He stood supervising our work in the heat when he could have been inside relaxing with air conditioning and an icy drinking. My dad always watched over us and instructed strictly, until we finished our job as he satisfied. Sometimes his tough and cruel attitude really made my brother and me annoyed.
One day we were cutting our next-door neighbor’s yard. She always waited until the grass was knee-high to call us over. To make maters worse, we had an old lawn mower. This particular afternoon, I was finishing up and was tired and sweaty.
I was just about to cut off the lawn mower when I saw Dad pointing to one piece of grass. I ignored him and kept walking. Dad called me again and yelled, “Hey, son. You missed a piece.” I frowned, hoping he would let it slide and let me go home. But he kept pointing and shouting.

Pinty Tailor was a little boy who enjoyed going to school and doing all sorts of things, except for art and writing. Using brushes and pencils did not come easy to Pinty, so his works of art did not end happily, and he would just give up in disgust. But one day Pinty found a pencil of such lovely colours that he could not resist, and he tried drawing a circle. As ever, it did not go well, and he was about to throw the pencil away when his drawing began to speak to him. “Psst! You aren’t going to leave me like this, are you Come on, the least you can do is draw me a pair of eyes!” said the drawing. Pinty was understandably shocked, but he managed to draw two little spots inside the circle. “Much better, now I can see myself,” said the circle, looking around at itself… “Arghh! But what have you done to me !” “I don’t draw very well,” said Pinty, trying to make excuses. “OK, no problem,” the drawing interrupted him, “I’m sure that if you try again you’ll do better. Go on, rub me out!” So Pinty erased the circle and drew another one. Like the first one, it was not very round. “Hey! You forgot the eyes again!” “Oh, yeah.” “Hmmm, I think I’m going to have to teach you how to draw until you can do me well,” said the circle with its quick, high-pitched little voice. To Pinty, who remained almost paralysed with shock, this did not seem like a bad idea, and he immediately found himself drawing and erasing circles. The circle would not stop saying “rub this out, but carefully; it hurts,” or “draw me some hair, quickly, I look like a lollipop (棒棒糖)!” and other funny remarks.
After spending nearly the whole afternoon together, Pinty could already draw the little figure much better than most of his classmates could have. He was enjoying it so much that he did not want to stop drawing with this crazy new teacher of his. Before going to bed that night, Pinty gave his new instructor a hearty “thank you” for having taught him how to draw so well.
Para 1 The next morning Pinty jumped out of bed and went running to find his pencil, but it was not there.

The summer I turned 16, my father gave me his 69 Chevy Malibu convertible (敞篷车). Beautifully repainted cherry red with V-8 engine—it was a gift wasted on me at that age. What did I know about classic cars The important thing was that Hannah and I could drive around Tucson with the top down.
Hannah was my best friend, a year younger but much taller, almost five foot ten.“Hannah’s a beautiful girl,” my mother always said. And sure enough, that summer she signed with a modeling agency. She was already doing runway work .
A month after my birthday, Hannah and I went to the movies. On the way home, we stopped at the McDonald’s drive-through, putting the fries on the seat between us to share. “Let’s ride around a-while,” I said. It was a clear night, oven-warm, full moon casting low over the desert. Making a turn too fast, l hit a patch of dirt and the back of the car slid to the other side. I then drove through a neighbor’s landscape wall and knocked into a full-grown palm. The front wheels came to rest half way up the tree trunk.
There were French fries on the floor, the dash (仪表盘), and my lap. An impossible amount of blood was on Hannah’s face, flaps of skin hanging into her eyes. They took us in separate ambulances. In the ER, my parents spoke quietly: “Best plastic surgeon in the city…but it is more likely to be the end of her modeling career.…”
We’d been wearing lap belts, but the car didn’t have shoulder bands. I’d broken my cheek bone on the steering wheel; Hannah’s forehead had split wide open on the dash. What would I say to her
When her mother, Sharon, came into my hospital room, I started to cry, preparing myself for her anger. She sat beside me and took my hand. “I rear-ended (追尾) my best friend when I was your age,” she said. “I destroyed her car and mine.” “I’m so sorry.” I said, knowing Sharon was trying her best to comfort me and helping me out of my terrible sense of guilt and self-blame.

Thirty years ago, Cayley was greatly surprised to find that she had a brother. She made up her mind to find him. Since then she refused to leave the home she grew up in, hoping that her brother would knock on the door one day. Little did Cayley know that her brother, Nick Rhoades, had been longing to do so, but only to walk away at the last minute. But thanks to the TV programme Long Lost Family, the pair have enjoyed an emotional reunion.
Cayley’s mum Jacqueline left the family when her daughter was only seven to start a new life in America. Cayley was brought up by her grandmother Victoria, who died in 2001, and she clearly remembered first finding out about her brother Nick. Cayley was quite angry with the fact that was covered up. So she was determined to find her brother no matter what difficulties she would meet with.
Many years later, Cayley, her husband, Colin, and their children were still staying in the house where she grew up because she always had hope that one day her brother would knock on the door. Her husband Colin was very understanding and even though they had two other houses to move to, they stayed in the same house. She never gave up hope.
Meanwhile, when Nick knew he was adopted, he did ask his parents questions and they told him everything they knew. His adoptive parents were so loving and his mum had adopted hundreds of children. Nick had been one of those lucky kids. He had lived a really very happy childhood. Sadly, when Nick was 18 his adoptive mum died of cancer. After several years, his adoptive father also died. Nick was extremely sad during that period of time. Once again, he became a poor orphan without parents, which led him to make the decision to find his birth mum Jacqueline.
Nick had been given his birth certificate (出生证) by his adoptive parents with an address on it.

9.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Joe and I had been looking forward to our retirement. However, when he suffered a heart attack last spring, he was forced to leave his job as a truck driver earlier than we had planned. As the medical bills increased, we realized I would have to continue working full-time while Joe stayed home and took over the housework.
This new arrangement was a disaster. One night, when I dragged myself to bed, I was horrified to discover Joe had turned our white sheets blue. He told me he had found out how to save on water, soap and electricity. He patted his blue trousers and announced proudly washing everything together was the secret.
When I awoke to the deafening rain the next morning, all I wanted was a hot home-cooked meal. However, what greeted me at the table was a microwave package. I knew my husband had his faults, but I thought he at least knew how to cook! I knew if I didn’t leave the house soon I would lose my temper with him. As the heavy rain thundered down outside, Joe offered to drive me to work. I ignored him as I struggled into my jacket and seized my bag with my teaching plans inside.
He insisted that he would take me and reached for his boots. I looked at the piles of newspapers and the dirty dishes still on the table. “Don’t you have enough to do I can take care of myself.” I stormed out, not even kissing him goodbye. Joe shouted after me not to take the shortcut (捷径).
Ten minutes later, I ignored Joe’s warning and turned off the main route to take the shortcut. I thought it hadn’t rained enough to flood the road, but as I rounded the corner, water rushed across my path. After a few feet, the car got stuck. I opened the door and water poured in. I hurriedly closed the door. I couldn’t risk walking in this. Almost 20 minutes passed. The car began to shake. 1 got the fright of my life when I heard three long honks (喇叭声).

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
Having worked at a small food store for two years, I thought I had become successful at what our manager called “customer relations”. I firmly believed that a friendly smile and an automatic “sir”, “madam”, “thank you” and “sorry” would see me through any situation. But on a Christmas night an old woman shook my belief that such a glib response (巧言应对) could smooth over any difficulty while dealing with other human beings.
The moment she entered the store, the woman presented a sharp contrast to our shiny store with its bright lighting and neatly arranged shelves. Walking as if each step were painful, she slowly pushed open the glass door. On such a zero-degree night, she was wearing only a faded print dress, a thin sweater too small to button, and black slippers with the backs cut out to expose heels. There were no stockings or socks on her blue-veined legs.
After walking around the store for several minutes, the old woman stopped in front of the rows of canned vegetables. She looked at the row of cans, finally picked up a can of corn and stared at the label. At that point, I decided to be a good and polite employee and asked her if she needed help. As I stood close to her, my smile became harder to maintain. An unpleasant smell of sweat rose from her torn clothing.
“I need some food,” she muttered in reply to my bright “Madam, can I help you ”
“Are you looking for corn, madam ”
“I need some food,” she repeated, looking down at the can in her hand, “Any kind.”
“Well, the can of corn is ninety-five cents, madam.” I said in my most helpful voice. “Or if you like, we have a special on bread today.”
After a short pause, she lifted her head and said, “But I can’t pay.”
For a second, it was on the tip of my tongue to tell her that she could take the corn.

参考答案
1. I asked him repeatedly where the money had gone. At first he would not tell me, which made me even angrier. I would not let the matter alone. I kept hounding him, determined to find out where the money had gone. I also asked his other brothers about the money, but no one knew. Afterwards, I planned to consult the bank about the account of my son. However, I was busy with my working, so I didn’t go to the bank all the time.
Several busy days later, there appeared an envelope in the box. In the letter, my son admitted that the year before he had put his savings in the offering box for his father and me. After reading the letter, I stood there speechless, tears filling my eyes. It had taken my son years to save that money. He had given it to us willingly—without telling us what he had done.

Thankfully, we thought of a solution. It was simple but significant: We bought two tubes of toothpaste—one for me to squeeze and one for her to roll. That made all the difference. The trouble was over. And interestingly, I once caught Mary squeezing when she thought I was just brushing my hair. I also had to admit that to roll did keep the tube neater. So why focus on the differences that separate us Instead, why not compromise a little and embrace diversities
Years later, I had new roommates in college. There were always discomforts like “toothpaste wars”. For example, one roommate often stayed up late working, and the typing, typing, typing on the keyboard disturbed our bedtime. Since it mattered more for her to work, we lived in relative harmony with earplugs. So, how can we get along with others By completely agreeing on one thing Or by respecting and handling the differences I would argue the latter.

4.One possible version:
Thinking fast, he started jumping up and down and waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop, and the driver stuck his head out of the window with a puzzled look. Alex darted forward and pointed at the moving turtle. “I’m just trying to save it.” he explained. With an understanding smile, the driver applauded his efforts. Seeing the car pulling away, Alex was lost in deep thoughts. “Maybe I could put up a sign to warn people there were turtles crossing the road,” he said to himself.
To make the sign, Alex hurried back home and found some leftover wood and paint. He hammered nails into the wood to make a flat board, after which he painted a vivid picture of a turtle in the middle and added “Slow! Turtles Crossing” at the bottom. He had completed all his work when Dad arrived home, who offered to carry the sign to the spot. Together they fixed the sign into the ground by the side of the road. Tired and disappointed, I went back to cut that piece of grass. I said to myself, “That one piece isn’t hurting anyone. Other neighbors took notice of the good work we did and we soon got more business. We started out with one client, but by the end of the summer we had five.

6.Para 1
The next morning Pinty jumped out of bed and went running to find his pencil, but it was not there. He searched everywhere, but there was no sign of it. Pinty began to worry, and he did not know if he had really spent the previous afternoon talking with the little man or whether he had dreamt the whole thing. So, to try to settle the matter, he took a pencil and some paper and tried to draw a little man. It turned out not bad at all, except for a couple of jagged lines. He imagined his bossy little teacher telling him to round out those edges, and that it looked like he was trying to give him spots. Pinty gladly rubbed out those bits and redrew them.
Para 2
He realised that the crazy little teacher had been right: it made no difference whether you had the magic pencil or not; to manage to do things, you only needed to keep trying and to enjoy doing so. From that day on, whenever Pinty tried to draw or paint, or do anything else, he always had fun imagining the result of his work protesting to him and saying ‘Come on, my friend, do me a bit better than that! I can’t go to the party looking like this!’ The courage to accept your own weaknesses and make efforts to improve is all that matters.

7.“The most important is that you’re both alive. I forgive you and Hannah will too.” She said. I still couldn’t forgive myself for the harm caused to Hannah, trapped in deep self-accusation and regret. Aware of my desperation, Sharon took me in her arms, patting me on the back. I plucked up enough courage to request her to take me to Hannah’s ward. Seeing me getting close to her bed on the wheelchair pushed by her mother, Hannah asked eagerly, “Are you all right ” Tears of joy and relief poured down our cheeks.
Sharon’s forgiveness allowed Hannah and me to return to our normal life. We got back to be in the car together that summer, to stay friends throughout high school and college, to be in each other’s weddings, and to watch my four teenagers fawn over her three younger children. I think of her gift of forgiveness every time I’m tempted to resent someone for a perceived wrong. The scars are so faded that no one else would notice, but in the sunlight I can still see the faint shimmer just below her hairline—for me, an imprint of grace.

9.Looking over my shoulder, I stared into the flashing lights of a familiar truck. I realized that Joe had come to rescue me. My heart danced with joy when I heard Joe’s voice. Following his instructions, I climbed out of the sunroof. When I got out, I found that Joe had turned the truck round for me to get on. Joe drove to higher ground. He rapidly got out of the vehicle and helped me into the passenger’s seat. When I thought about how I had treated him earlier, my eyes watered.
After getting back to our warm home, Joe held my hand tight. He was wet all over, but wrapped a blanket around me first. In a whispering voice, he admitted it was his fault for not doing the housework properly. It didn’t make me angry anymore when I thought of Joe’s heroic rescue. I also realized that our current life was new to both of us. We had to allow each other the time to get used to it. With this thought, I opened my arms to Joe and said, “Darling, I forgive you.”

10.Possible version 1:
Then the employee rules flooded into my mind: remain polite but do not let the customers get the best of you. At the thought of that, I managed a friendly smile and automatically blurted out, “I’m sorry, madam, but I can’t give away anything for free.” Hearing this, the old woman nodded her head, her face darkened and eyelids dropped. Unwillingly, she put the can back on the shelf, shuffled past me toward the door and vanished into the distance. It was at that moment that a ripple of regret welled up inside me. How I wished I hadn’t said those words! (81 words)
Moments after she left, I rushed out of the door with the can of corn. Fortunately, the gaunt figure of the old woman was still in sight, so I went running up to her. “Madam, Merry Christmas!” said I, thrusting the can of corn into her hand. For a second, I could feel that her hand quivered. Without waiting for her reply, I just waved her goodbye before trotting straight away. For the rest of my shift, the image of the woman constantly reminded me that while dealing with other human beings, it was sincere concern rather than a glib response that could smooth over any difficulty. (92 words)
Possible version 2:
Then the employee rules flooded into my mind: remain polite, but do not let customers get the best of you. For a moment, I even entertained the idea that this was some sort of test, and that this woman was someone from the head office, testing my loyalty. I responded dutifully, “I’m sorry, madam, but I can’t give away anything for free.” The old woman’s face collapsed a bit more and her hands trembled as she put the can back on the shelf. She shuffled past me toward the door, her torn and dirty clothing barely covering her bent back. (80 words)
Moments after she left, I rushed out the door with the can of corn. But she was nowhere in sight. While I was dragging myself back, what kept me company was merely biting wind. For the rest of my shift, the image of the woman haunted me. I was so young, healthy and smug while she was so old, sick and desperate. Wishing with all my heart that I had acted like a human being rather than so merciless an employee, I was saddened to realize when facing dilemmas how difficult it was for a heart to stay gold. (85 words)
