A couple of years ago, just as I do every winter, I bagged up all the items in my closet that I no longer wore, along with the clothing my sons had outgrown (长得穿不下). I issued a call to action to all of my family and friends, asking them to do the same. It is always my hope to re—purpose (重新利用) those things that do nothing more than take up space in our homes, things other people might make better use of. Nothing bothers me more than selfishly squirreling things away, things that we know we will never use or wear, while people in our community go without.
I found an ugly pair of hand-knitted (手工编织) socks in one of the bags donated by a friend. Not to be mean, but they were a bad mixture of colored yarn (纱线): orange, purple, yellow and blue. I had to decide—garbage or donation It wasn’t like they were unusable. They were simply unpleasant to look at, surely not something anyone would choose to wear. I imagine they were a homemade gift gone bad.
I put the ugly socks in the garbage, but ten minutes later, I took them back and put them in the donation pile. Later that afternoon, my mother and I drove down to Madison Avenue in downtown Phoenix. Every winter she and I load up my Jeep with our own cast-offs (自己不穿而赠人的旧衣服) and the donations from friends, and we take them downtown, along with food and water, to distribute to the men and women living on the street. Sometimes I even get my boys involved.
On this particular afternoon, as Mom and I distributed warm clothing and hot food to a small crowd of people outside a local homeless shelter, I reached into the bag and pulled out the last of the donations—the ugly socks. Surreptitiously (偷偷地), I held them in my hand as the crowd of homeless quietly left, each with a grateful smile, a fistful of food and an armload of clothing.

One long-ago morning, the hot summer sun climbed to the top of the sky. By noon, flowers drooped(低垂). Birds stopped singing.
Lan, who walked to visit her grandmother on Sundays, grew hotter and hotter. As she passed an enormous house, she spotted a beautiful tree. Its branches spread wide, and their leaves created a shady space next to the road. Lan sat down in that shade to rest. How nice and cool, she thought. I still have a long walk ahead of me, but I can sit here for a while.
Lan was wrong. Less than a minute later, the door of the enormous house opened with a bang. A boy rushed out and shouted, “You can’t sit there! That’s my tree! Chen’s tree!” He wore silk trousers and carried a golden toy pony.
“Maybe it’s your tree, but you don’t own the shade beneath it,” replied Lan.
“Yes, I do,” declared Chen.“I own everything about that tree, even the birds! You’ll have to pay to sit there.”
“Pay you ” cried Lan. “Shade belongs to everyone.”
“Not my shade,” said Chen.
“If I buy your shade, may I stop here on Sundays this summer ” asked Lan.
“I suppose,” said Chen.
Lan reached into her twice-mended pocket and handed over her only coin. “That’s all the money I have.” she said.
“Fine!” said Chen. “But remember, you bought the shade. Nothing else!”
Every summer Sunday, Lan stopped to sit in Chen’s shade on the way to her grandmother’s. She often called to the birds in the tree. The birds would fly down and gather around her.
Alone in his toy-filled bedroom, Chen watched Lan talk and laugh with the birds. She’s telling stories, he thought. It looks fun. Should I charge her more money when she stays longer Then he remembered she’d had only one coin in her pocket. However, when autumn arrived, Lan no longer walked to her grandmother’s.
Chen missed seeing her talking to the birds.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Marie was upset. The single mom worked late shift but never managed to sleep past 6: 00 am because of the garbage collectors! “Don’t make any noise!” she screamed out of her window. “People are trying to sleep!”
“Sorry, Madam,” Jeff the garbage collector, said. “We’re trying our best to avoid producing noise. And we’re just doing our job!” Marie stared at him and shut her window angrily. Jeff emptied the heavy garbage cans into the back of the truck. “You fool,” Marie said. She never expected that very soon she’d be very grateful to the young man she had just screamed at.
A week later, Marie woke at 5: 55 am because of the stomach pain. She got up and headed for the bathroom, but on her way she started feeling dizzy and sick and broke into a cold sweat. “David!” Marie cried for her six-year-old son. “David, help me!” When David got up and reached her, Marie was lying on the floor. “Get help,” she whispered to him. The little boy saw his mom was lying on the floor unconscious and started crying.
He wondered whom he could turn to for help. They were new in town and had no family there. And at that time, neighbors were all sleeping. Just then, the garbage truck came to collect garbage. David then rushed outside and cried anxiously, “Help! Help!” Hearing it, Jeff and his teammate quickly got to David! After knowing what had happened, Jeff called an ambulance and comforted David.
Soon, the ambulance arrived. The medical workers checked Marie and found the unconsciousness was caused by anaemia(贫血). They gave her first aid and claimed that Marie would recover soon. But she needed to go to hospital and be treated with injections. Then, Marie was taken away.
David cried sadly for his mom. Jeff accompanied him, patting him on the shoulder and saying, “Don’t be afraid, and your mom will be back soon.” The six-year-old boy nodded as if he could understand. Jeff couldn’t bear to leave the little boy alone at home. After asking for a leave of absence, Jeff stayed to take care of David.

Due to a medical misdiagnosis (误诊), Susan, 34, had been left sightless, and was suddenly thrown into a word of darkness, anger, frustration and self-pity. And all she had to depend on was her husband, Mark.
Mark was an officer and he loved Susan with all his heart. When she first lost her sight, he watched her sink into despair and was determined to help his wife gain the strength and confidence to become independent again.
With Mark’s encouragement, Susan felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get there She used to take the bus, but was now too frightened to get around the city by herself. Mark volunteered to drive her to work. Soon, however, Mark realized the arrangement wasn’t working. Susan is going to have to start taking the bus again. But she was still so fragile, so angry, how would she react
Just as he predicted, Susan was scared at the idea of taking the bus again. “I’m blind!” she responded bitterly. “How am I supposed to know where I am going I feel like you’re abandoning me.”
Mark’s heart broke to hear these words, but he knew what had to be done. He promised Susan he would ride the bus with her until she got the hang of it. And that is exactly what happened. For two solid weeks, Mark, military uniform and all, accompanied Susan to and from work. He taught her how to rely on her other senses, specifically her hearing, to determine where she was and how to adapt to her new environment. He helped her befriend the bus drivers who could watch out for her, and save her a seat.
Finally, Susan decided to try the trip on her own. Mark encouraged her but he decided to continue watching out for her where she got off the bus, only in secret.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As we pulled out of the garage, my mind went blank when I saw the gun pointing against the car window. This can’t be happening to me. Then I felt the gun, cold, against my head, and I heard my friend Jeremy saying, “What do you want Take my wallet.” but at the time I thought of nothing.
I remember being a little annoyed when the gunman pulled me from the car by the hair. I remember the walk to the house --- Jeremy, me, the two men with two guns. I remember the fear and anger in the gunmen’s voices because Jeremy was being slow, and I remember wondering why he was being slow. I did not realize that Jeremy had thrown the keys into the bush. But I remember that sound of the gun hitting Jeremy’s head and the feeling as the man who had hold of my hair released me. And I remember the split second when I realized he was looking at Jeremy, and I remember wondering how far I could run before he pulled the trigger. But I was already running, and upon reaching the car across the street, I didn’t crouch(蹲伏) behind it but screamed instead.
I remember thinking there was something ridiculous and illogical about screaming “Help! Help!” at eight o’clock on a Tuesday evening in December and changing my plea(恳求) to the more specific “Help! Let me in. Please let me in!” But the houses were cold, closed, unfriendly, and I ran on until I heard Jeremy’s screams behind me announcing that our attackers had run away.
The neighbors who had not opened their doors to us came out with baseball bats and helped Jeremy find his glasses and keys. In a group they were very brave. We waited for the police to come until someone said to someone else that the noodles were getting cold, and I said politely, “Please go and eat. We’re OK.”
I was happy to see them go. They had been talking of stricter sentences for criminals, of bringing back the death penalty(处罚) and how the President is going to clean up the country. I was thinking they could be saying all of this over my dead body, and I still feel that stiffer sentences wouldn’t change a thing. In a rush all the anger I should have felt for my attackers was directed against these contented people standing in front of their warm, comfortable homes talking about all the guns they were going to buy. What good would guns have been to Jeremy and me
People all over the neighborhood had called to report our screams, and the police turned out in force twenty minutes later. They were ill-tempered about what was, to them, much trouble about nothing. After all, Jeremy was hardly hurt, and we were hopeless when it came to describing the gunmen. “Typical,” said one policeman when we couldn’t even agree on how tall the men were. Both of us were able to describe the guns in horrifying detail, but the two policemen who stayed to make the report didn’t think that would be of much help.
The policemen were matter-of-fact about the whole thing. The thin one said, “That was a stupid thing to do, throwing away the keys. When a man has a gun against your head, you do what you’re told.” Jeremy looked properly embarrassed.

Once a man got lost in a desert. The water in his water bag had run out two days ago, and he was on his last legs. He knew that if he didn’t get some water soon, he would surely die. The man saw a small house ahead of him. He thought it might be his imagination, but having no other option, he moved toward it. As he got closer, he realized it was quite real, So he dragged his tired body to the door with the last of his strength.’
There was no one in the house and it seemed like it had been empty for quite some time. The man entered it, hoping against hope that he might find water inside.
His heart missed a beat when he saw what was in the house—a hand pump. It had a pipe going down through the floor, perhaps tapping a source of water deep underground.
He began working the hand pump, but no water came out. He kept at it and still nothing happened.
Finally, he gave up. He threw up his hands in despair. It looked as if he was going to die after all.
Then the man noticed a bottle in one corner of the house. It was flled with water. He uncorked the bottle and was about to drink the sweet life-giving water, when he noticed a piece of paper attached to it. The handwriting on the paper read: “Use this water to start the pump. Don’t forget to fill the bottle when you’re done.”
He had a dilemma. He could follow the instructions and pour the water into the pump, or he could ignore it and just drink the water.
What should he do How would he feel as he watched the water disappear into the pump What if the pump did not function What if the pipe had a leak What if the underground water had long dried up
But then maybe the instructions were correct. Should he risk it If it turned out to be false, he might be throwing away the-last water he would ever see.

There, outside, she saw a young lady carefully holding some leaflets(传单)and a TV set model. She knew of a large TV set establishment nearby and assumed a message was about to be gently delivered. “This is the last thing I need today.” She muttered to herself and hesitantly opened the door.
Coughing bitterly, Linda stuck her head out. “Excuse me, madam…” the young lady said with a smile. “I’m sorry but I am not the slightest bit interested in any TV whatever.” Linda interrupted her impatiently. “As a matter of fact, I am feeling terribly awful.” “Is there anything I can do for you, madam ” the young lady asked with concern. “No thanks, just leave me alone.” Linda then shut the door in her face. I moved to a new place. After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom told me she had to work. I was still hoping she’d meet me after the bell.
I opened the door. I was hungry. I wandered into the kitchen, tearing tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
“Benjamin!” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn’t hear her come in. “What just broke ” she asked, bending to pick up the shards (碎片). In her hands, I recognized the pieces. It was Grandma’s bowl, the one Mom put out for special occasions.
“Why couldn’t you have waited for me to unpack I couldn’t believe you broke this,” she said.
Words burst from my mouth and spilled across the room. “Well, I can’t believe we have to live here now! I can’t believe I have to switch schools when there are only a few weeks left before summer!” I ran into my room, shutting the door behind me violently.
The broom (扫帚) swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom’s bedroom door closed behind her. I stole out into the kitchen and picked out the shards in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together.
“I’ m sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can’t make a fresh start with broken things.”
As I wandered down the hall, Mr. Sato, my neighbor, was emptying his garbage.
“Are you sure you want to throw that out ” he asked, gesturing towards the bowl.
“It’s broken,” I whispered. “This is all my fault.”
“Things break, Benjamin. That isn’t anyone’s fault. Besides, this is a simple e. I’ll show you.” Taking a thin knife, Mr. Sato started to repair the bowl. After a long time, Mr. Sato said to me, “This needs to dry. Come back on Saturday, and we will finish it.”

Alexander sang all the time. He sang in the shower, he sang while he did his homework, and he sang while he walked to school. He simply loved singing. One day during a break, he heard Kevin talking about the tryouts(选拔)for the City Choir(合唱团).
“Yeah, I’m attending the tryouts this weekend,” Kevin announced. “With my voice, I’m pretty much guaranteed a spot. I don’t even need any practice as I am so talented. Imagine they’ll want me to perform lots of solos(独唱),too.”
Everyone knew that Kevin had a fantastic singing voice. Normally, Alexander just ignored him, but he couldn’t help imagining himself as a member of the choir. Wouldn’t it be fun, he thought, to sing with other kids every day and have someone actually teach him about singing
On the tryout day, Alexander took a deep breath, walked into the building, registered at a large table, and then waited nervously in the hallway. The only one who didn’t look nervous was Kevin. And why should he be He has performed as a soloist many times. Alexander, on the other hand, had never taken a musical lesson in his life, much less had performed for an audience.
After a while, the choir director, Mr.Robeson, walked in and told the kids that they were to sing a song individually, sing as a group and answer some questions. Soon the individual test began. When Alexander stood on the stage, he tried to calm down and pretended he was singing in the shower. He felt satisfied when he was done, at least until Kevin’s turn came. As Kevin s confident voice filled the room Alexander realized that he would never sound that good.
Next, Mr. Robeson put the kids into groups of four or five and asked them to sing together. Kevin’s group sang right before Alexander’s, and even with four other boys singing, Kevin’s voice clear and distinct; it seemed to reach the farthest corners of the room.

1.范文
Just as I was about to drop the socks back into the empty bag, a teenage boy came up to me. “Can I please have those socks ” he asked, his blue eyes sparkling in the sun. I was surprised handing him the socks. “Thank you so much, Ma’am!” he grinned. “These socks remind me of my grandmother. She used to knit stuff like this for me!” The young man raced to the sidewalk cheerfully as if I had given him a brand new car or a million bucks. He sat down, slipped into the socks, stood up and stomped his feet.
“They’re perfect!” he smiled. I was deeply touched by his innocent smile. Those socks not only warmed his feet that day, but so was his heart—and mine. They had rekindled the memory of that young man’s grandmother, a woman who must have loved him dearly. I had ever been so thoughtless as to think that those socks, as pitiful as they appeared on the surface, didn’t have a purpose. To this day, it’s proof that there is happiness in life’s simplest things, and we’ll never know how much until we’ve shared those things with others.(165 words)

Monday morning arrived. Before Susan left she kissed Mark and thanked him. Her eyes filled with tears of gratitude for his loyalty, his patience, and his love. And for the first time, they went separate ways. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday... Each day on her own went perfectly, and Susan had never felt better. She was going to work all by herself. On Friday morning, as she was getting off the bus, the driver said, “I do envy you.” Susan wasn’t sure if the driver was speaking to her. After all, who would envy a blind woman
Paragraph 2:
Curious, she asked the driver, “Why do you say that you envy me ” The driver responded, “You know, every morning for the past week, a gentleman in a military uniform has been watching you as you get off the bus until you safely enter your office building. You are one lucky lady.” Tears of happiness poured down Susan’s cheeks. Although she couldn’t physically see him, she had always felt Mark’s presence. She was so lucky, for her husband had given her a gift she didn’t need to see to believe — the gift of love that can bring light where there is darkness.

How long did the whole thing last Three minutes, five, eight No matter how many hours of my life I may spend reliving it, I know there is no way to prepare for the next time — no intelligent response to a gun. Saturday morning, I stole out early and knocked on the Satos’ door. “Now comes my favorite part,” said Mr. Sato. He offered me a tiny brush. “Take your time, and fill in the crack lines.” At first my hand was shaking, but then I painted with smooth strokes. When I finished, the bowl looked completely different. Instead of the cracks blending in and disappearing, now you could see exactly where it was broken. “This bowl has another layer to its history— it has been broken, repaired, and is stronger because of it,” said Mr. Sato. I took the bowl home quietly.
I was a little nervous to show Mom the bowl, but that night I brought it into her room. She ran her fingertip over the golden veins. “Mr. Sato helped me fix it,” I said. “It’s so beautiful,” she replied. “A new beginning.” I sat on the edge of her bed, and Mom reached out to me. Our hands joined with crisscrossed fingers. Maybe it finally did feel like a fresh start. The bowl was stronger like this too. It was the cracks that were holding it together.

Finally, Mr. Robeson asked the kids about their performance experience, music lessons and trainings. All Alexander could say was, “I just really enjoy singing, but I want to learn more and practice more.” He knew his answer was not perfect, but he was willing to do whatever it takes to become a better singer in the choir.
Finally, Mr. Robeson told Alexander that he made it, not Kevin. There must have been some mistake. “How did I make it, Mr. Robeson ” asked Alexander in disbelief. “Well, you love singing. Although your voice isn’t the best, with training it will improve.” “But, what about Kevin ” Alexander asked. “Talent alone is not enough,” said Mr. Robeson. “After all, we weren’t looking for soloists.” Alexander now understood that hard work and right attitude made a difference.
