Last July, my parents and I went to visit my aunt and uncle in Seattle, a city on the northwest American coast. Dad did some research and had no difficulty in finding us cheap tickets online.
On the day of our flight (飞行),we had to wake up very early. When we checked our bags in, we found that one bag weighed too much, so we had to pay a fine(罚款). After that, Dad insisted that we go and have some breakfast at the airport restaurant. We had a lot of fun watching many different people there. Then we realized it was getting late, so we rushed to the gate. It took one hour for everyone to get on the plane, but finally the door was shut and we were on our way!
I think what I liked most during our trip was our visit to Mount Rainier, which was near Seattle. It was nothing like I had expected. Before we left, my aunt lent us hats to protect us from getting sunburned, so I sup-posed that it would be very hot. Imagine my surprise when we drove up the mountain and I discovered the top was covered in snow and ice!
My uncle led us to a small path beyond the main road to increase our chances of seeing wildlife. We walked over a small hill, and suddenly be-fore us there appeared a field of snow. Small wild flowers grew up through the snow; under the snow we could hear rushing water-a small stream. Little animals stood still to avoid being noticed; tiny birds rose into the air. It was the most beautiful sight that I’d ever seen.
5. Why did they have to pay a fine
A. Because they got up late. B. Because they didn’t wait in line.
C. Because they came to the airport late. D. Because one of their bags was overweight.
6. What was the author’s favorite experience
A. The visit to Mount Rainier B. The flight to Seattle.
C The breakfast in the airport. D. The discovery of a small stream.
7. Why did they choose a small path instead of the main road
A. To avoid the snowy road. B. To avoid being attacked by animals.
C. To take a shortcut to save time. D. To enjoy more of the wildlife.
C
Many animals recognize their food because they see it. So do humans. When you see an apple or a piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense.
Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo. Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet. The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season.
Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.
8. Which of the following eats only one type of food
A. white butterfly B. small bird.
C. The bear. D. The fox.
9. Certain animals change their choice of food when _______.
A. the season changes B. the food color changes
C. they move to different places D. they are attracted by different smells
10. We can learn from the last paragraph that _______.
A. food is chosen for a good reason B. French and British food is good
C. some people have few choices of food D. some people care little about healthy diet
11. What will most probably be talked about in the next paragraph
A. Why choosing the right food is important. B. How to choose the right food.
C. The right amount of food for a person. D. Vegetables matter more than meat and sugar.
D
There are several ways from which to choose for you to keep your kids safe in your neighborhood. But the first step to keep your child safe in your neighborhood is to know your neighbors.
Knowing your neighbors can save you a lot of worry. It lets you know that the car that has just driven down the street belongs to “the yellow house on the corner”, or the truck that has just driven by the playground looks unfamiliar, but the guy in the passenger seat lives two doors down. It’s these simple things that keep you from going out of your mind whenever you see someone driving by where children are playing.
But you shouldn’t just know what they look like. The next step is to know them well. What do they do How do they act You might be OK with them driving by the playground since they live in the neighborhood, but are you OK with them being on the playground Knowing your neighbors helps with several things. First you find out what kind of people they are. This helps you know if you should let your child go out in an area that they gather. Let’s face it: you don’t want your child to play around people or people’s children that curse (咒骂) or hit each other. Sometimes you have to protect your child against your own neighbors.
Knowing them also makes them know you. Being neighbors is an interesting thing. You might not like them or have the same views as them, but we all usually protect those that we consider our own. If you know your neighbors, they know you. They will more probably look after the child of the nice lady down the street in the brick house, than the people in the house on the corner that no one ever sees.
12. This text is mainly to tell how to ________.
A. keep your child safe in the neighborhood B. set a good example to your neighbors
C. get along with your neighbors D. teach your child to protect himself
13. What does the underlined phrase “going out of your mind” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Becoming very excited. B. Becoming very worried.
C. Becoming very sad. D. Becoming very relaxed.
14. What can we know from paragraph 3
A. It is important for you to be polite to your neighbors.
B. People in the same neighborhood are quite different.
C. People like enjoying themselves on the playground.
D. Knowing your neighbors helps to keep your kids safe.
15. The neighbors would like to look after your kid if ________.
A. they are often encouraged B. you are getting on well with them
C. you are the one nobody knows D. they think you are a beautiful lady
