Do you know the word migrate It is a word usually used to talk about certain animals such as birds, fish and so on. When animals migrate, they travel a long way from one part of the world to another according to the season. For example, swallows (燕子) migrate south in winter. Many animals migrate—they do this often at the same time and to the same place each year. They move to places where conditions are better—where the weather is warmer, where there is more food and water, or where their young will be safer.
People also migrate. When people migrate, they go to live in another area or country, especially in order to find work. In English, when people leave their home country in order to live in another country, we use the word emigrate instead of migrate. From migrate and emigrate come the words migration and emigration. However, if people move from their home country to another to live there forever, the word changes from emigrate to immigrate in the English language. Then the word immigration is born.
Isn’t word-making of the English language interesting And can this process of finding out the relationships between words and learning them in a group or groups be a way for you to learn the language

We all know the strange feeling of watching the time change on a clock. You never see it change because the hands move so slowly. But of course, the time is changing all the time.
Human faces, like clock faces, are also changing. And like clocks, the changes take place too slowly to be noticed. Over many thousands of years, though, huge changes are possible. For example, the human brain tripled (三倍) in size and began to think more. Our faces became flatter (平坦的).
If our heads became larger in the past, how will things change in the future Unlike the changes of a clock face, the changes in human faces are very difficult to predict (预测). One of the main reasons for this is the way in which we can now control parts of nature. Hundreds of thousands of years ago, all changes were natural, but now we can actively choose ways for our own evolution (进化).
Just a few hundred years ago, most humans were working in the fields, whereas nowadays more and more people receive education. These are just predictions, and no one can be sure how human beings will become in the future. But with such huge changes in our environment, it seems likely that we will look very different in the future.
44.The changes of human are hardly noticed because ______.
A.human faces never change B.the human brain becomes bigger
C.the changes take place too slowly D.we never think about the changes

B.human faces used to be changed by nature
C.it is easy to predict the changes in human changes
D.human can’t change the size of brain in the future
46.The underlined word “whereas” in the last paragraph means “______”.
A.最终 B.同时 C.然而 D.因此
47.From the last paragraph, we can learn that ______.
A.the predictions will surely be true B.people in the past liked to be educated
C.future humans must have larger heads D.humans will not look the same as today

The small town of Hay, on the River Wye, sits between England and Wales. It was a quiet place until 1961.That year, a man named Richard Booth came back from a trip to the US with a lot of secondhand books. He bought the town’s old fire station and changed it into a shop to sell them. For the next 10 years, he bought more empty shops and made them into bookshops too. Hay became the world’s first “book town”.
With the money he made, Booth bought the town’s old castle(城堡). On April 1, 1977, he jokingly called himself King of Hay and said the town was now a country! Some local people thought he was a little crazy.
But he wasn’t crazy at all. The joke made more people come to Hay and buy secondhand books. By the 1980s, there were 1 million books on sale in the town’s over 30 bookshops. Then in 1988 the first literature(文学)festival began in the town. Writers from all over the world came to talk about their new books, along with scientists, reporters and even the President of the US! Now there are book towns in Europe, Australia, Canada and even Malaysia. No one could believe that everything started from the little town with only 1300 people.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low , because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (渠) and other projects began to be built in my village. They were good men from our government. Later, I moved to another city. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard, so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.
Nowadays, many people live in a big city. However, we should not forget our hometowns where we are from.
