Dear Dr. Brown,
I’m writing to apologize for the mistake I made in my last letter, in which I invited you to be a judge in the English Speech Contest to be held in our school. I’m sorry for the inconvenience it might have caused and here is the correct information.
The English Speech Contest is going to be held at 7 :30 p.m. on June 30th in the school lecture hall. Since you are the most popular foreign teacher in our school, your presence will be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,

这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者在打碎了Mrs. Ferguson的厨房玻璃后,心理挣扎着要不要向她道歉,随后向自己的祖父需求帮助,祖父给了作者非常诚恳和耐心的指引和建议。
But he just listened while I continued talking. “I was wrong. I hate myself for what I did”, I told him, with my head down. I didn’t know what to do to make things right. I had been afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me. Finally, my grandpa said, “What would you do if you were her ” After a while, I replied, “Maybe if I were her, I would expect the boy who did wrong offers to fix her window.”
Grandpa smiled when he knew I had figured it out. “Doing what is right is not always easy,” he said, handing me the phone, “I am proud of you.” He did not make me do it. It was always my choice. As it turned out, Mrs. Ferguson was very kind and we even became really close friends. “Admitting what you are not proud of is the hardest thing,” said Grandpa. “Choosing to be honest makes others trust and respect you.”沈阳二中 2022-2023学年度上学期 12月月考

George Turner, 48, owner of Penuel Bicycles in Inglewood, California, talks with respect
3
about his childhood BMX dirt bike. “I was mad keen on cycling.” he says. “I did whatever it took
to get on that bike, as long as I was home before dark.” Home meant housework, homework and
annoying brothers. But a bike meant escapes.
In 2010, George transformed his childhood love into a livelihood, and opened his bicycle
shop, Penuel Bicycles. The shop fulfilled a lifelong dream. Before that, he had worked for years
delivering boxes for FedEx while selling bike accessories online.
“Bicycles kept me out of trouble,” George remembers. “They were part of my life.” He
figured that was still true for kids when he opened Penuel Bicycles. George expected parents to
crowd inside, eager to buy shiny new bikes for their kids. He looked forward to helping boys and
girls discover the joy of riding — and stay out of trouble — just as he had.
None of that happened, however.
George found that kids these days lead a different life. Usually, they don’t want a bike for
their birthday. And most of them ever don’t know how to ride a bike. Instead of getting out and
riding, they prefer spending their time on their phones indoors. As kids don’t ride, it is impossible
that parents crowd in his shop to buy new bikes. Nine years after opening his Penuel Bicycles,
George feared that he had to close the shop.
Then in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic swept the nation. Surprisingly, the pandemic saved
George’s business. During the pandemic, many American people found that cycling was a good
way to exercise and also a safe way to get around. The demand for new bikes kept growing and
people in George’s neighborhood pulled out their old bikes and wheeled them to Penuel Bicycles
to get repaired. Now he is trying his best to meet his customers’ needs and hopes that his
customers can really discover the joy of riding.
24. What did the bike mean to George in his childhood
A. Taking up sports. B. A precious birthday gift.
C. Getting away from daily routine. D. A convenient vehicle.
25. What is George’s lifelong dream
A. Making a big fortune. B. Being a member of FedEx.
C. Opening his own bicycle shop. D. Helping people pursue riding pleasure.
26. Why was George’s bike business once in a tough situation
A. The lifestyle of kids changed.
B. He wasn’t good at management.
C. Bikes were not as charming as before.
D. His business was affected by the pandemic.
27. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Joy of Wheel B. Passion for Exercise
C. Improvement of Bike Business D. Increasing Demand for New Bikes
C
Final exams are around the corner — but that won’t stop some teenagers putting in the least
effort. This may be because their brains aren’t developed enough to properly assess how high the
4
stakes (利害关系) are, and adapt their behaviour accordingly.
Catherine Insel, at Harvard University, and her team asked adolescents between the ages of
13 and 20 to play a game while monitoring their brains. In some rounds of the game, participants
could earn 20 cents for a correct response, while an incorrect one would cost them 10 cents. But in
rounds with higher stakes, correct responses were worth a dollar, and wrong answers lost the
participants 50 cents.
The team found that while the older volunteers performed better in the high stakes rounds,
the younger ones didn’t — their performance didn’t change in line with whether the stakes were
low or high. And the older the volunteers were, the more improved their performance was.
When the team looked at the brain activity of the volunteers, they found that their ability to
improve their performance was linked to how developed their brains were. A region in the brain,
which continues to develop until we are at least 25 years old, seemed to be particularly important.
The findings explain why some teenagers are so unconcerned when it comes to hazardous
behaviors, such as driving too fast, for instance, especially when one of their friends is nearby.
Insel thinks schools should reconsider the way they test performance in teenagers. “This
study suggests it’s not a good idea to evaluate school performance in a single final exam”, she says.
A better idea would be to use a variety of smaller tests, conducted throughout the year.
It’s not all bad news for teens, though. Teenagers put the same amount of effort into tasks that
aren’t “important”, and start to prefer hobbies to school. It could be a good thing, allowing
teenagers to learn complex social skills, for example.
28. Why did the researchers set different bets in the game
A. To teach how to make money.
B. To help participants pass exams.
C. To show the varied risk levels of the game.
D. To meet the needs of different participants.
29. What does the underlined word “hazardous” probably mean
A. addictive. B. beneficial. C. regular. D. dangerous.
30. What should be kept in mind while assessing students’ performance
A. It should not be judged by only one exam.
B. The items in exams should not be too difficult.
C. Exam-focused education should not be adopted.
D. Examination is not a good means of evaluating students.
31. What is Insel’s attitude to teenagers’ putting effort into “unimportant” tasks
A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
D
Housing officials say that lately they are noticing something different: students seem to lack
the will and the skill, to solve ordinary conflicts. “We have students who are mad at each other and
they text each other in the same room,” says a teacher. “So many of our roommate conflicts are
5
because kids don’t know how to negotiate a problem.”
And as any pop psychologist will tell you, bottled emotions lead to silent dissatisfaction that
can boil over into anger. At the University of Florida, emotional outbursts occur about once a
week, the university’s director of housing and residence education says. “It used to be: ‘Let’s sit
down and talk about it.’” he says. “Over the past five years, roommate conflicts have increased.
The students don’t have the person-to-person discussions and they don’t know how to handle
them.” The problem is most dramatic among freshmen; housing professionals say they see
improvement as students move toward graduation, but some never seem to understand, and they
worry about how such students will deal with conflicts after college.
Administrators think that reliance on cell phones and the Internet may have made it easier for
young people to avoid uncomfortable encounters. Why express anger in person when you can
express in a text “Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook: Oh, my roommate kept me
up all night studying,” says Dana Pysz, an assistant director in the office of residential life at the
University of California, Los Angeles. “It’s a different way to express their conflict to each other,
thus creating even more frictions as complaints go public.” In recent focus groups at North
Carolina State University, dorm residents said they would not even face noisy neighbors on their
floor.
Administrators point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives.
Now in college, the children lack the skills to deal with even modest conflicts. Some parents are
not supposed to continue to interfere on campus.
32.What is the main reason for many roommate conflicts
A.Students are not strong-willed.
B.Students are not satisfied with each other.
C.Housing directors are not responsible for them.
D.Students are not good at reaching an agreement about the problems.
33.What do we learn from the second paragraph
A.Students, especially freshmen, should bottle up their dissatisfaction.
B.Some students are not able to handle conflicts by the time they graduate.
C.Students in Florida sit down and have a person-to-person talk once a week.
D.The number of conflicts among roommates has decreased during the past five years.
34.What is the attitude of Dana Pysz when he mentions roommates making their conflicts known
in the media
A.Disapproval. B.Indifference. C.Eagerness. D.Support.
35.What should parents do according to the passage
A.They should be involved in their children’s life on campus.
B.They should teach their children the skills to solve the conflicts.
C.They should constantly contact the administrators of the college.
D.They should deal with their children’s problems in their whole lives.

Can People Really Learn to “Speed Read”?
There never seems to be enough time to read these days. With so many books and
articles—especially on social media—the ability to read faster could be a life-changer. ___36___
The problem is that true speed reading without any loss in comprehension isn't supported by the
science.
“Speed reading is not actually possible,” said Elizabeth Schotter, a scientist at the University
of South Florida. ___37___ You have to first see the word, understand its meaning, relate the word
to its context, and then figure out where to point your eyes next.
Some books and classes train people to read whole passages all at once by scanning text in a
zigzag(之字形)pattern. These methods suggest that our eyes make wasted movements when
looking back and forth over words. But studies find that the limit to reading comprehension is the
ability to recognize words. ___38___
In recent years, numerous apps have claimed they can boost reading speed. These apps
display text just one word at a time, one after another at a certain rate. ___39___ But again, the
eyes sometimes have to go back and reread words to fully grasp text. Research has found that your
eyes pick up important information beyond the word in focus, which is simply not possible if you
can only read one word at a time.
___40___You probably can’t dramatically increase your speed, but research suggests you can
get a little faster by improving your vocabulary and simply reading more. Good thing there’s
plenty to read. Enjoy it.
A. So is there a way to become a faster reader
B. Is the scientific community doubtful about speed reading
C. So adjusting eye movements probably won't help you read faster.
D. Most people who claim to be speed-reading are actually skimming.
E. That way, your eyes are forced to focus on the word in front of you.
F. Reading is a complex task that requires cooperation between mental systems.
G. That is why so many classes, books and apps claim they can get you to read faster.

Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would
visit him often going home after school.
No matter how rotten I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe.
Whenever there was a problem, he gave me the tools to fix it. I knew I would always find the best
answer from him. He always understood. He loved me.
I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs.
Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and slam! It was a home run that soared high and away,
and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran! Walking home, my best
friend, Tom, asked, “How will she ever know who did it She’s blinder than a bat!” He had a
point.
I was afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. I didn’t know what she would
9
do. I tried to calm down. However, my stomach was in knots. On the way home. I imagined that
she was a mean witch (女巫) chasing me, and the further way I ran, the larger she grew... until
finally she towered over the whole town, seeing my every move with an evil eye. Thoughts rushed
through my mind. Would Mrs. Ferguson stay mad at me Would she call police Worse still,
would she tell my parents I couldn’t even imagine the disappointment on Mom and Dad’s face.
They were hoping I would act honestly and in a responsible way
I decided to stop by Grandpa’s. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to knock my head
against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away —as if punishing myself could
undo things.
“I would tell everything to Grandpa,” a voice inside me said.
“I was wrong.” I told him, with my head down. He must have known something was up by
the expression on my face. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing
where we shouldn’t.

1.续写词数应为 150左右
