Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. He’d hiked the park near his home many times. But after walking along a new path last April, the 45-year-old man was lost.
As the day was near dusk, his concern turned to fear after several hours of aimless wandering (游荡). The area was a wildfield. With no flashlight, only some water and a bar of chocolate in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean was unprepared for anything except the two-hour hike he’d planned.
Compean climbed to a place, about 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal (信号). “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, adding a photo showing where he was. The photo showed his dirty legs hanging over large rocks and plants.
All Compean could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast and the winds were blowing. Dressed only in a T-shirt, shorts, and a jacket, the hiker felt extremely cold. He hugged himself into a tight ball, using his backpack to shelter his legs from the cold winds. But he wouldn’t sleep. After finding two mountain lions and a bear, he spent the night suffering from stress, keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him to stop an animal to come close.
Sixty miles away in Ventura County, Ben Kuo, was a lover of satellite maps (卫星地图) which could help exactly locate things or persons in some areas. He was working at home when he read a twitter online from the Sheriff’s Department (警察局), showing a photo of a man’s legs. The Sheriff’s search-and-rescue teams had spent a night looking for Compean. Unsuccessfully, they post the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location.

Last week, I watched an old couple when they walked through a local thrift (节俭) store. I had just dropped off a bag of clothes and a few other items I no longer wanted. Anyway, this couple moved slowly around me in search of items they had on a list they held tight in hand. They didn’t say much, but occasionally talked with the other and picked an item up. “No, it’s not suitable for her and she dislikes it,’’ one would say and move on.
My curiosity always got the best of me until I satisfied it by asking. “Can I help you find something ” I asked. They stopped, looking at me. Then the man said, “We are looking for old things that look new. Look, every new year in the past we tried to begin the year with new things. It was a goal to surround ourselves with things fresh and new so that we had new direction, new hopes and dreams for the year ahead. More importantly, we can give some gifts to Eva.”
“Eva Who is she ” I asked. “She is a lovely 10-year-old girl we adopted three years ago. Her parents died in a serious traffic accident. She always wants to be a singer,” the man replied. When hearing those words, I felt sad and said, “I’m sorry for the girl. Can you tell me how does your search work out ” The lady sighed and said, “It took a long time for us to find a special gift, but we discovered it was in vain (徒劳的).”

Alice is an ordinary woman with an amazing heart. One day, she was flying from Tampa to Hawaii for a meeting. Her boyfriend, Rico, came to see her of. When they slowly made it to the safety check, they noticed the airport security (安保人员) was asking a young lady to drop a package into the litter bin before boarding her plane.
The lady begged to place the package in Lost and Found Department instead of throwing it away. Sadly, it was not allowed. The lady, after much begging, finally dropped her package and was heading to her gate. Alice, after realizing the lady was nearly in tears, knew something was wrong. Then, it was her turn to pass through security.
While hugging Rico goodbye, she asked him to quietly go through the liter bin and pick up the deserted (丢弃的) package to see what was inside of it. Alice was truly trying to help the lady.
After waving a final goodbye to his girlfriend, Rico went straight to the litter bin to get the package.
As soon as her plane landed, Alice called Rico about the package and was told that in it was a snow globe (水晶球) with a picture of the young lady in the airport. On the base were the words “We love you, Katie. Grandma and Grandpa." Alice immediately realized that the snow globe was far from ordinary. They should do something to return it.

Peter, a 5-year-old boy, showed such great interest in sea shells that he would rush to pick them up with his 3-year-old sister, Shirley. They screamed out their joy as Peter collected his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, sea shells lay shinning on the peaceful beach, waiting for him, just like stars twinkling（闪烁）in the sky. As waves touched them, they seemed to be flowers blooming（绽放）in gentle wind.
One day, Peter was wandering through market with Shirley, with some shells in his pocket. Suddenly Peter found his younger sister was lagging（落后）behind. He stopped and looked back, finding Shirley was standing in front of a toy shop and was staring at something with great interest.

Money Well Spent
It was late spring, and we were living in a house in a rural part of Tennessee. I have always loved to garden, and this morning seemed like the perfect time to be working on the broad flowerbeds surrounding the old house we were remodeling (改建).
I jumped when I heard a soft voice. “Hello Could I have a glass of water, please ” a seventeen or eighteen-year old girl asked hesitantly, looking at the ground.
“Of course,” I said, taking off my gloves. I went into the house and came back out with a cold bottle of water. She drank most of the bottle with the first swig (大喝) and then turned as if to walk back down the road.
“Did your car break down and do you need some help ” I asked.
She shook her head and took a deep breath that ended somewhere between a sigh and a sob. There was a flash of anger. “My dad threw me out, so I’m going to live with my grandma in Memphis. But she can’t come to get me, so she has a ticket for me at the bus station,” said the girl.
“It is thirty miles from our house to the bus station in Clarksville. How about I driving you there ” I suggested. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she nodded. “Well, let’s give your grandma a call,” I said. “She’s probably worried.”
Within a few minutes, the girl was dialing her grandma on my phone. As soon as I talked to her, she confirmed the whole story. The girl’s mother had died suddenly in an accident. Her dad had been coping with a lot of anger, and the two of them were not getting along.
At a second thought, I took out some extra cash from our emergency stash (储藏) in my top dresser drawer. About thirty minutes later, we pulled up to the bus station. But the bus wasn’t scheduled to arrive for another two hours.

I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to connect myself with the outside world. I went from an unhappy state to anger. However, that couldn’t make my phone receive the signal. He had always loved looking for where photos were taken and always tried to identify where movie scenes or television shows were filmed by using a satellite map. When he saw the photo in which Compean’s legs are surrounded by an endless rocks and plants, he quickly pulled up a satellite map on his computer. With the help of the Sheriff’s Department, he fixed the nearby area. The location matched!
The rescue (救援) workers got there as soon as possible. A rescue helicopter was in the air above Compean. After spending more than 24 hours alone in the wilderness, he was finally pulled safely into the helicopter. Days later, Compean couldn’t wait to meet Ben. “Maybe we’ll go on a hike,” Compean joked. Getting serious, he told Ben, “I can’t be too grateful to you for saving my life. What a lucky dog I am!”

I turned around and ran out of the store. I knew I should go home to find something to help the couple. Then, I took a taxi. On the way home, I was thinking what I could give the girl as a gift. For me, the only hobby was music. So I thought I could give something about music as a gift, maybe a record. After arriving home, I found an old record which was given by my grandparents when I was ten years old. I believed Eva would love it.
When I returned to the store, the couple sat near the counter (柜台). Seeing me, they waved to me. I ran to them with the record in my hand. The man was surprised and asked me where I had gone. I gave them the record and told them, “This is a gift from my grandparents, and now it belongs to Eva.” The couple felt happy and showed their appreciation to me. Although the record meant a lot to me, I knew it would light up the girl’s sky. I felt proud of what I had done.
