Four Inspiring Movies
Forrest Gump(1992)
Forrest Gump is a simple man with a low IQ but good intentions. This movie follows the fictional story in which the simple man makes his way through some of the more turbulent(动荡的)times from the 1960s through 1980s. This film took home six Oscars, inspired a “Weird Al” song, and proves that a big heart is the most important thing.
It's a Wonderful Life(1946)
No movie list would be complete without a nod to the past. Let's go with this Christmas classic, about a man with serious financial troubles who intends to commit suicide(自杀)by jumping off a bridge. His guardian angel Clarence Odbody stops him and tells him what life would have been like for those close to him had he never been born. Realizing how much he means to others, he rushes back home and all sorts of happy, inspirational, Christmassy things happen.
Dead Poet's Society(1990)
John Keating(Robin Williams)is a high school English literature teacher at a famous all-male boarding school who gets into trouble with the school administration after encouraging his students to challenge authority and think for themselves. It is certainly inspirational, if not also frustratingly sad.
A Beautiful Mind(2001)
This movie tells the story of John Nash(Russell Crowe), a professor at Princeton, a US university, who revolutionized the field of game theory and fell into madness as a result of paranoid schizophrenia(精神分裂症). With the love and support of his family as well as the help of medical professionals, he managed to overcome his mental illness and continued to make contributions to the field of mathematics.

Doctors say you had better use it before you lose it. The more you sit each day, the more chance you have of getting sick.
Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less. He said that was especially true for some chronic (慢性的) diseases.
Richard Rosenkranz studied the relationship between sitting and chronic diseases in middle-aged Australian men. He worked with researchers from the University of Western Sydney. They examined the health records of more than 63,000 men from New South Wales. The men were between the ages of 45 and 65. The men reported about what diseases they had, or did not have. And they kept record of the amount of time each day that they sat.
The study also showed that exercising every morning for 30minutes did not reduce the health risk if you spend the next eight hours sitting at the desk. Mr. Rosenkranz said it was important to make sure you exercise. But he said it was also important to find ways not to sit so much during the day.
Many jobs today require sitting and working at the desk all day. James Levine works at the Mayo Clinic in the United Sates. He suggests working while standing at high table some of the time instead of sitting at a desk. Dr. Levine also suggests standing while using the telephone or eating. Or he advises walking with the people you work with for an on-foot meeting. And he notes that if you spend more time on your feet, you may have muscle activity that helps burn fats and sugars in your body.
4. The underlined sentence in the first paragraph implies that ________.
A. doctors should treat all the patients well
B. doctors should make use of every method
C. one should value his health before he loses it
D. one should depend on himself to keep healthy
5. How did Richard Rosenkranz make the study
A. By examining some records and reports.
B. By making some laboratory experiments.
C. By talking with the doctors and patients.
D. By watching the men’s daily performance.
6. According to Dr. Levine, in order to avoid the harm of long-time sitting, one should ________.
A. exercise more often
B. change his job
C. stay away from the desk
D. stand or walk more
7. Where does this text probably come from

Throughout history, many species of animals have been threatened with extinction. When Europeans first arrived in North America, more than 60 million buffalo (水牛) lived on the continent. Yet hunting the buffalo was so popular during the 19th century that by 1900 the animal’s population had fallen to about 400 before the government stepped in to protect the species. In some countries today, the elephant faces a similar challenge, as illegal hunters kill the animals for the ivory in their tusks.
Yet not all animals with commercial value face this threat (威胁).The cow, for example, is a valuable source of food, but no one worries that the cow will soon be extinct. Why does the commercial value of ivory threaten the elephant. while the commercial value of beef protects the cow
The reason is that elephants are a common resource, while cows are private goods. Elephants wander freely without any owners. The hunter has a strong motivation to kill as many elephants as he can find. Because illegal hunters are numerous, each has only a slight motivation to preserve the elephant population. By contrast, cattle live on farms that are privately owned. Each farmer makes great effort to maintain the cattle population on his farm because he harvests the benefit of these efforts.
Governments have tried to solve the elephant’s problem in two ways. Some countries, such as Kenya and Uganda, have made it illegal to kill elephants and sell their ivory. Yet these laws have been hard to put into effect, and elephant populations have continued to dwindle. By contrast, other countries, such as Malawi and Namibia, have made elephants private goods and allowed people to kill elephants, but only those on their own property.
With private ownership and the profit motive now on its side, the African elephant might someday be as safe from extinction as the cow. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle pointed out the problem with common resources: “What is common to many is taken least care of, for all men have greater regard for what is their own than for what they possess in common with others.”
8. Why does the author mention buffalo in paragraph 1
A To introduce a similar threat to elephants.
B. To provide an example of species extinction.
C. To offer an explanation for government policies.
D. To present the statistics of the buffalo in America.
9. Why do elephants face threats while cows are safe
A. They are under different law protection
B. They attract different groups of hunters
C. They contain different commercial value
D. They represent different ownership types
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Bans on killing elephants for ivory
B. Effective laws for elephant protection.
C. Methods of making elephants private goods
D. Government policies on the elephant’s problem
11. What can we learn from Aristotle’s words
A. People hold little regard for others’ property
B. People want to profit from common resources
C. People care more about their own possession
D. People tend to take what they own for granted
A 9. D 10. D 11. C
根据第一段中“Yet hunting the buffalo was so popular during the 19th century that by 1900 the animal’s population had fallen to about 400 before the government stepped in to protect the species. In some countries today, the elephant faces a similar challenge, as illegal hunters kill the animals for the ivory in their tusks. (然而,狩猎水牛在19世纪是如此流行,以至于到了1900年,野牛的数量已经下降到大约400只,直到政府介入保护这个物种。今天在一些国家,大象也面临着类似的挑战,因为非法捕猎者为了获取象牙而捕杀这种动物。)”可知,作者之所以提到水牛,是为了介绍大象所面临的类似威胁。故选A项。
根据第三段中“The reason is that elephants are a common resource, while cows are private goods. (原因是大象是一种公共资源,而牛是私人物品。)”和“Elephants wander freely without any owners. The hunter has a strong motivation to kill as many elephants as he can find. (大象在没有主人的情况下自由走动。猎人有强烈的动机去杀死尽可能多的大象。)” 及“By contrast, cattle live on farms that are privately owned. Each farmer makes great effort to maintain the cattle population on his farm because he harvests the benefit of these efforts. (相比之下,牛生活在私人拥有的农场上。每个农场主都在努力维持农场的牲畜数量,因为他们收获了这些努力的成果。)”可知,之所以大象面临威胁,而奶牛是安全的,是因为它们各自代表着不同的所有权类型。故选D项。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Governments have tried to solve the elephant’s problem in two ways. Some countries, such as Kenya and Uganda, have made it illegal to kill elephants and sell their ivory. (各国政府试图通过两种方式来解决大象的问题。一些国家,如肯尼亚和乌干达,已经将猎杀大象和出售象牙定为非法行为。)”以及“By contrast, other countries, such as Malawi and Namibia, have made elephants private goods and allowed people to kill elephants, but only those on their own property. (相比之下,其他国家,如马拉维和纳米比亚,则把大象当作私人物品,允许人们猎杀大象,但仅限于在他们自己的领地上。)”可知,第四段通过举例说明各国政府对大象的政策。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中Aristotle所说“What is common to many is taken least care of, for all men have greater regard for what is their own than for what they possess in common with others. (对大多数人来说共同的东西最不被重视,因为所有人都更关心自己的东西,而不是他们与他人共同拥有的东西。)”可以推知,人们更关心自己的财产。故选C项。
D
Every now and then you may hear news of satellites sent into space. On Feb 21, for example, US company SpaceX took 46 satellites into orbit. On Feb 27, China sent 22 satellites into space. Why do we need so many satellites What do they do for us
At present, there are more than 3,000 active satellites moving around the Earth. They have all kinds of roles, from transmitting TV signals, giving you directions on the road, to helping scientists with their research. For example, the 22 satellites China just sent up are part of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System Shared bikes that use BeiDou chips can provide more accurate positioning, making them easier to find. Drones can also use BeiDou while flying.
Before satellites, TV signals didn’t reach very far. Mountains or tall buildings would block the signals. Phone calls to faraway places were also a problem. Setting up telephone wires over long distances is difficult. With satellites, TV signals and phone calls can be sent directly to a satellite and back down to different locations on Earth. SpaceX’s Starlink project is trying to go further. It plans to use satellites to provide people with internet all over the globe.
Satellites can also provide information about clouds, oceans, land and ice. They help scientists predict changes in weather and climate. By monitoring wildfires and volcanoes, satellites help emergency workers deal with natural disasters. Farmers can use satellite images to decide the best time to water their fields.
Some satellites fly near other planets. They may look for water on Mars or take close-up pictures of Saturn’s rings. In 2020, video website Bilibili sent a satellite into space. Its job is to look at other planets and share the pictures and videos with Bilibili’s users.
12. Why are satellites the US and China have sent to space mentioned at the beginning of the passage
A. To show which country has the most satellites.
B. To compare the two countries’ satellite developments.
C. To prove the popularity of satellites in space.
D. To lead up to the topic of the functions of satellites.
13. The satellites for the BeiDou system can help _____.
A. shared bikes work longer B. drones fly farther
C. locate things more accurately D. provide people with internet
14. Why did Bilibili send a satellite into space
A. To control its drones with BeiDou chips.
B. To provide its users with data of other planets.
C. To contribute to the search for signs of life on Mars.
D. To inform the emergency staff of natural disasters.
15. The passage might show up in a _________.
A. travel guidebook. B. science newspaper.
C. historical book. D. sports magazine.
D 13. C 14. B 15. B

Doctors say you had better use it before you lose it. The more you sit each day, the more chance you have of getting sick.
Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less. He said that was especially true for some chronic (慢性) diseases.

Some countries such as Kenya and Uganda, have made it illegal to kill elephants and sell their ivory.
A. To introduce a similar threat to elephants.
B. To provide an example of species extinction.
C. To offer an explanation for government policies.
D. To present the statistics of the buffalo in America.
9. Why do elephants face threats while cows are safe
A. They are under different law protection
B. They attract different groups of hunters
C. They contain different commercial value
D. They represent different ownership types
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Bans on killing elephants for ivory
B. Effective laws for elephant protection.
C. Methods of making elephants private goods
D. Government policies on the elephant’s problem
11. What can we learn from Aristotle’s words
A. People hold little regard for others’ property
B. People want to profit from common resources
C. People care more about their own possession
D. People tend to take what they own for granted
