To: All staff
From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2010
A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sport 1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.

Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.

Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 p.m. and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr.
Sport 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i. e. 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Days after Argentina canceled all international passenger flights to protect the country from the new coronavirus, Juan Manuel Ballestero began his journey home the only way possible: He stepped aboard his small sailboat for what turned out to be an 85-day odyssey across the Atlantic.
The 47-year-old sailor could have stayed put on the tiny Portuguese island of Porto Santo, but the idea of spending what he thought could be “the end of the world” away from his family, especially his father who was soon to turn 90, was unbearable. So he loaded his 29-foot sailboat with canned fish, fruit and rice and set sail in mid-March.
“I didn’t want to stay like a coward on an island where there were no cases,” Mr. Ballestero said. “I wanted to do everything possible to return home. The most important thing for me was to be with my family.”
Friends tried to dissuade Mr. Ballestero from starting the perilous journey, and the authorities in Portugal warned him he might not be allowed to re-enter if he ran into trouble and had to turn back. But he was determined, “I bought myself a one-way ticket and there was no going back,” he said.
Sailing can be a lonely passion, and it was particularly so on this voyage for Mr. Ballestero, who each night tuned into the news on a radio for 30 minutes to assess how the virus was spreading across the globe. “I kept thinking about whether this would be my last trip,” he said.
When he made it to his native Mar del Plata, on June 17, he was surprised by the hero’s welcome he received. “Entering my port where my father had his sailboat, where he taught me so many things about how to sail, gave me the taste of a mission accomplished,” he said. A medical professional administered a test for Covid-19 on the dock. Within 72 hours, after the test came back negative, he was allowed to set foot on Argentine soil.
While he didn’t get to celebrate his father’s 90th birthday in May, he did make it home in time for Father’s Day.
4. Why did Juan Manuel Ballestero start his journey
A. To prove his bravery. B. To be reunited with his family.
C. To realize his dream of sailing. D. To avoid being infected by the coronavirus.

A. He failed to celebrate his father’s birthday.
B. He was forbidden to enter Mar del Plata port.
C. He was not allowed to leave Porto Santo by the authorities in Portugal.
D. He didn’t receive any information about the outside world during the journey.
6. What does the underlined word “perilous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. distant B. tiring C. boring D. adventurous
7. What can we infer from the text
A. The man was born in Porto Santo in Argentina.
B. The man wanted to prove his bravery.
C. The man’s father was expert at sailing.
D. There were no cases in Mar del Plata.

Families with unhealthy diets have worse mental health than those who mostly avoid meals packed with sugar, fat and salt. A new study is the first to show that children’s mental health is not immune to what they eat, especially inflammatory (引起炎症的) diets.
The effects of inflammatory diets are putting kids on a path to poor mental health from as young as age 11. The evidence (证据) is now well proved that inflammation in the body is actually damaging bodies gradually and leading to many chronic (慢性的) diseases.
The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) looked at the diets and self-reported mental health of more than 1,800 Australian parents and their 11-to-12-year-old children. as well as measuring markers of chronic inflammation in their blood.
The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, showed the benefits of healthy eating — namely anti-inflammatory diets high in fruit and vegetables — extended beyond physical health, and that families can eat their way to good mental health.
A child’s weight was not an influencing factor. Regardless (不管) of size, the bad effects of inflammatory diets high in processed foods affected children across the board.
Lead researcher at the MCRI, Dr Kate Lycett said while research had shown that specific anti-inflammatory diets could reduce depression symptoms (症状) in adults, people knew little about the effect on children and how a typical family diet—a mix of both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods — affected mental health.
“What surprised me was we saw the same results in terms of the risk in children and parents,” Dr Lycett said. “That’s really important, because as adults we try to control what we eat. We know when we eat a packet of chips we feel sad, but we often don’t think about that when we give our kids those chips.”
8. Which diet should children avoid
A. The diet high in processed foods. B. The diet low in sugar, fat and salt.
C. The diet high in fruit and vegetables. D. The diet low in inflammatory foods.
9. What can we know about Dr Lycett’s study
A. Inflammation in our body contributes to chronic diseases.
B. We can eat our way to good health physically and mentally.
C. A child’s mental health is not immune to his or her weight.
D. Anti-inflammatory diets can reduce depression symptoms.
10. What does Dr Lycett really want to express in the last paragraph
A. The risk of giving adults inflammatory foods.
B. The feeling of eating a packet of tasty chips.
C. The effect of a typical family diet on children.
D. The importance of controlling what kids eat.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Healthy eating leads to no inflammation
B. Family diets have a mixed effect on kids
C. Unhealthy diets are harming kids’ mental health
D. Junk food is damaging kids’ physical health
D
Rather than continue living a comfortable urban life, this British family has sold their London home in favor of launching the world's smallest nature reserve to save a nation's coral reef system. Karolina and Barry Seath — along with their two young daughters — are preparing to move to an island in the Seychelles(非洲塞舌尔群岛) measuring just 1,300 feet long by 980 feet wide(400 by 300 meters).
They've launched a charity and teamed up with(与……合作)local biologists in an effort to bring the coral reefs back to life in the smallest African country, which have been almost wiped out by rising sea temperatures. Their land-based coral farm will be only the second of its kind in the world, the other being on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, to specialize in regrowing coral to restore the reefs.
47-year-old Barry, who is a former policeman, said, “We are just a normal husband, wife and two kids, living the sort of life that most others do, but we felt the need to make a positive change for ourselves, our children, and the world we had largely taken for granted.”
Over the course of several vacations to the Seychelles, the Seaths witnessed the gradual deterioration(恶化) of the reefs. “Every time we visited, we noticed the coral was getting worse and worse,” said Barry. “All the tourists say the same thing. They love the beaches but are really disappointed with the coral.”
Barry felt it was time to make a change and show his daughters an alternative way of eco-friendly living. He then teamed up with experts at the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles in order to develop the facility. Once it is complete, it will be the first large-scale, land-based coral farm in the Indian Ocean. The eco-warriors hope to use the facility to grow around 10,000 corals per year. Barry said, “Our long-term goal is to show everyone that — with just a relatively small investment — you can have a big positive influence on the marine (海的) environment.”
12. Why have Karolina and Barry Seath sold their house
A. They need to collect enough money to set up a charity.
B. They will move to an island in the Seychelles to save coral.
C. They think suburban life near the sea will be more comfortable.
D. They want to have a sea farm to grow coral for their daughters.
13. What do we know about the Seaths from the text
A. They often take other people's deeds for granted.
B. They have visited the Seychelles only once.
C. There are altogether six family members.
D. Barry Seath used to be a policeman.
14. What will Karolina and Barry Beath's coral farm be like
A. It will be 1,300 meters long and 980 meters wide.
B. It will be the first of its kind in the Indian Ocean.
C. It will focus on fighting with rising sea temperatures.
D. It will be larger than the one on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
15. What is Barry's long-term goal
A. To show everyone they can make a difference to the sea environment.
B. To make sure no one is disappointed with the coral in the Seychelles.
C. To try to grow around 10,000 corals per year on their coral farm.
D. To show his daughters a better life of eco-friendly living.

Almost all the possessions had been sold to buy food and clothing for the family. At last, nothing was left but the pet lamb, Daisy. At the thought of parting with the little creature, Mrs. Grant’s felt sad because the children loved it very much. Having struggled hard, she had to make up her mind to sell the lamb. But she could not ask any child to go for the butcher. Finally, she went herself with a heavy heart, dragging her leaden feet, and bargained with the butcher for the sale of Daisy.
While the children were all playing with the lamb, the butcher and his boy came to the door. “You see I am here for the lamb,” said the butcher in a loud voice. Hearing this, one child ran to her mother’s side, and asked what was happening in alarm. Mrs. Grant gently pushed the child aside, bent down and was about to tell the truth.
“That’s my lamb now, Charlie!” said the butcher’s boy in a playful tone, going up to Daisy with a rope in his hand.
“No, it is not your lamb. It is ours!” said Charlie, placing himself in front of it.
But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy’s neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated (咩咩叫) very sadly. The cry of grief which fell upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.
“Please tell your boy to stop a moment,” she said in husky tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.

【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. C
根据第三段中“I wanted to do everything possible to return home. The most important thing for me was to be with my family. (我想尽一切努力回家。对我来说,最重要的是和我的家人在一起)”可知,Juan Manuel Ballestero开始他的旅程的原因是为了和家人团聚。故选B。
5. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“While he didn’t get to celebrate his father’s 90th birthday in May, he did make it home in time for Father’s Day.(虽然他没有在五月庆祝他父亲的90岁生日,但他确实在父亲节的时候赶回家了)”可知,Juan Manuel Ballestero没能庆祝他父亲的生日。故选A。
6. 词句猜测题。根据第一段的“He stepped aboard his small sailboat for what turned out to be an 85-day odyssey across the Atlantic.(他登上了他的小帆船,结果是一次为期85天的穿越大西洋的奥德赛——冒险之旅)”可知,他驾驶一条小帆船,穿越大西洋,再结合下文“the authorities in Portugal warned him he might not be allowed to re-enter if he ran into trouble and had to turn back.(葡萄牙当局警告他,如果他遇到麻烦,不得不掉头返回,可能不会允许他再次入境)”可推断,Ballestero进行的旅程是冒险的。故划线词与D项adventurous意思相近。故选D。
7. 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Entering my port where my father had his sailboat, where he taught me so many things about how to sail, gave me the taste of a mission accomplished(进入我的港口,我父亲在那里有他的帆船,在那里他教了我许多关于如何航行的东西,让我尝到了完成使命的滋味)”可推知,男人的父亲是航海专家。

“That’s really important, because as adults we try to control what we eat. We know when we eat a packet of chips we feel sad, but we often don’t think about that when we give our kids those chips.”(“让我惊讶的是,我们在儿童和父母的风险方面看到了相同的结果,”Lycett博士说。“这真的很重要,因为作为成年人,我们试图控制自己的饮食。我们知道,当我们吃了一包薯片时,我们会感到悲伤,但当我们给孩子吃薯片时,我们通常不会想到这一点。”)”可推断,Lycett博士在最后一段真正想表达的是父母控制孩子饮食的重要性。故选D。
11. 主旨大意题。根据第一段“A new study is the first to show that children’s mental health is not immune to what they eat, especially inflammatory (引起炎症的) diets.(一项新的研究首次表明,儿童的心理健康与他们所吃的食物,尤其与引起炎症的饮食有关。)”

Paragraph 1:
But the more she explained, the stronger her children begged for Daisy. “No!-No!-No!” they dashed to Daisy and threw their arms around her, begging, “Please, mother! We would rather go hungry than lose her!” Hearing this, Mrs. Grant was in great sorrow, her heart bleeding. After all, she clearly knew that the children had devoted so much love to Daisy and that Daisy was more than a pet lamb to them; she was, in their eyes, a family member! Having struggled hard, she turned to the butcher and decided that she would not sell Daisy and would return the money.
Paragraph 2:
The Butcher, who had been watching all, was touched in his heart. When Mrs. Grant took out the money and gave it back, he just waved his hand and announced, “I will not rob the children of their pet!” He approached the children, patted them on the shoulders gently and promised that he would buy Daisy from their mother and then gave it back to them as a gift. The word left the children standing stunned. Then, looking up at him, one asked seriously, “Sir, do you really mean that ” The butcher just replied seriously, “I mean every word of it. She is OUR Daisy. My boy and I will come to see her occasionally.” Hearing this, all the children gathered round and stroked the pet, their little hearts filled with joy.

5. What do we know about Juan Manuel Ballestero
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. C

【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. C
【解析】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究首次表明,不健康的饮食危害孩子的心理健康。
8. 细节理解题。根据第五段“Regardless (不管) of size, the bad effects of inflammatory diets high in processed foods affected children across the board. (无论大小,高加工食品的炎症性饮食对儿童的不良影响是全面的。)”可知,孩子应该避免加工食品含量高的食物。故选A。
9. 细节理解题。根据第六段“Lead researcher at the MCRI, Dr Kate Lycett said while research had shown that specific anti-inflammatory diets could reduce depression symptoms (症状) in adults, people knew little about the effect on children and how a typical family diet — a mix of both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods — affected mental health. (MCRI的首席研究员Kate Lycett博士说,虽然研究表明特定的抗炎饮食可以减轻成人的抑郁症状,但人们对其对儿童的影响以及典型的家庭饮食——炎症和抗炎食物的混合——如何影响心理健康知之甚少。)”可知,消炎饮食可以减轻抑郁症状。故选D。
10. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Dr Lycett said. “That’s really important, because as adults we try to control what we eat.

Para2:
The butcher, who had been watching all, was touched in his heart.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
