课标要求 This section mainly consists of two parts - Opening Page & Reading and Thinking. The theme of this section is “food and culture”. In the Opening Page, a photo of a traditional Long-Table Banquet in the Miao Stockade Village of One Thousand Households in Leishan, Guizhou is presented. Such banquet is popular in ethnic minority areas in Guangxi, Yunan, Guizhou, Hunan, etc. The quote of this unit means that so often people show and receive love through food, and so in that sense food feeds both the body and the heart, and it also binds us together.
教学目标 (核心素养) At the end of this section, students will be able to: Identify and memorize the meanings of new words and expressions related to culture and food; Apply reading strategies to get a good understanding of the text and form a structural knowledge of the text; Analyze the cause and effect of a certain event; Explain the meaning of “culture and cuisine go hand in hand” and state the possible relationship between different foods and personalities.
教学重点 Identify and memorize the meanings of new words and expressions related to culture and cuisine and apply reading strategies to get a good understanding of the text and then form a structural knowledge of the text.
教学难点 Analyze the cause and effect of a certain event and explain the meaning of “culture and cuisine go hand in hand” and state the possible relationship between different foods and personalities.

Step One Opening Page Ask students to look at the photo on page 25 and answer the questions: What can you see in this photo Where do you think this photo was taken What is happening in this photo What impresses you most in the picture

Invite some students to share their answers. The rest of the class can add their own opinions. Ask students to read the quote on page 25 and try to translate it into Chinese. Have students share their understandings of the quote. Ask students what they know about Giada De Lanrentiis. Introduce her to the class by adding more related information. Ask students to read the learning objectives of this unit and underline the key words or phrases. Have students work in groups of 4 and discuss the questions 2, 3 on page 25. Collect answers from groups. Step Two Leading in Ask students to read and discuss the questions in Activity 1 on page 26 with their partners. Invite some students to share their ideas. Explain some new words in this section to students through paraphrasing. Step Three Making predictions Guide students to look at the title and the pictures of the text and then make predictions by answering three questions: Have you ever heard of the saying “You are what you eat” What do you think this saying means What’s the possible relationship between culture and cuisine according to your understanding. Collect answers from the class. Step Four Reading and checking Ask students to read the text quickly and underline the sentences that can show

the author’s understanding of the quote. Collect students’ answers. Ask students to read the text carefully again with the following two questions ad the share their answers: In What way does the author show us that Lynn culture and cuisine go hand in hand What places and their dishes are mentioned by the author Ask students to read the text again more carefully and finish Activity 3 on page 27. Collect answers from the class. Step Five Reading and matching Ask students to read “Understand cause an effect “ on page 27 and make it clear that “cause-effect” is a common type of relationship between events. Ask students to finish Activity 4 on page 27. And then collect answers from the class. Ask students to read through the text to find more examples from the text. Invite some of them to share their examples. Step Six Reading for structure and language Ask students to read the text to draw a mind map about the structure of the text. Try to underline and appreciate the language used to describe the food and culture. Collect students’ mind maps and their appreciation of the language. Step Seven Thinking and discussing Ask students to think about the question: Do you think “culture and cuisine go hand in hand ” Make them discuss in groups and note down their opinions for group presentation. Ask 3 or 4 groups to give their presentations.
