Hunting is part of the culture in many countries around the world, including right here in the European Union. Recently, some African countries have been widely criticized for allowing tourists to kill lions. In cases where the animals are endangered, almost everyone agrees that this type of hunting should be banned. （17） However, people are much more divided about a recent situation in the U. S. The populations of white-tailed deer have gotten out of control throughout the country because no animals kill them for food. （18） Hunters want to increase the number of white-tailed deer they're already allowed to shoot. Because the deer cause car accidents, the hunters think they're actually saving human lives by killing the deer. （19） And the deer are so overpopulated. Animal rights groups say that deer-related accidents are actually caused by hunters who scare the deer onto roads. While that claim is hard to confirm, this one isn't: the number of deer-related car accidents can't compare with the 200 hunting-related human deaths every year. （20） Finally, these groups believe that animals should be able to live freely in their environment, without having to worry about being killed. It was a bright spring afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer, a doctor and his daughter, Ava, were taking full advantage of it. They were driving with the windows down as they headed home. Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the sharp sound of tires.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers' horror, it slammed into a concrete barrier, flipped over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest dangling over the railing（栏杆） of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path.
And then a scream came from the pickup. Bauer ran to it. The driver pointed down. In the water was a car seat. A girl, about two years old, was terrified, floating on her back, kicking and splashing and screaming.
Matters quickly went from bad to frightening when the girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup driver to do something, but he didn't move. Maybe he was in shock.
He held no illusions about his chances jumping from this height into such shallow water. Four feet of depth was the most he could hope for. And were there rocks this close to the concrete pillar（柱子） of the bridge
He climbed onto the railing and took a leap of faith. A moment later he was bouncing off the sandy bottom-unhurt! With climate change on track to destroy the world's coral reefs（珊瑚礁）, scientists race to create a new super-coral that can survive extreme temperatures.
A type of microscopic algae（海藻） called Symbiodiniaceae lives within most coral's tissues. The two organisms have been living dependently for hundreds of millions of years in a way that resembles the relationship between humans and trees. The algae consume coral's waste products, and coral consumes nutrients that the algae photosynthesize （光合作用:）. Coral also provides shelter for algae. But when exposed to too much heat or light, the algae release harmful chemicals, so the coral casts them out. Left without their main energy source, the coral will starve to death. This is also bad news for the algae. But natural evolution has provided a biological feedback loop that can help the two reunite.
One of the compounds that algae release when water becomes hot, called DMs, bubbles up to the surface of the water and forms a thin layer, which shields the coral like a natural, on-demand layer of sunscreen.
