Max Woosey, an 11-year-old boy from the United Kingdom, has spent his time during COVID-19 doing something pretty meaningful. He slept in a tent for over 500 nights in a row. And he did this not only because he loves the outdoors but in service to others.
Max's father is a Royal Marine(皇家海军陆战队员), so he has courage and love for outdoor activities in his blood. Max's family was looking after their neighbor, Rick, who was dying of cancer. Before Rick passed away he gave Max a tent and had him promise to have an adventure.
So, after Rick died, Max had an idea. He decided to raise money for Devon Hospice(救济院), which cared for Rick in his final days. When the first lockdown(封闭)happened, Max had realized that much of the hospice's fundraising (筹资)also came to a stop. But outside the hospice, a number of people were waiting for help. So Max set a goal to raise 100 pounds by camping out in his front garden.
On March 29th, 2020, Max started his camping adventure in Rick's tent. As he passed hundreds of days camping out, he attracted national attention from the media and even the Prime Minister, who later paid him a visit. More people have donated to Devon Hospice.
Now, 500 days later, he is still camping! Through storms, rain, high winds and cold, he stuck to it. The lessons his dad taught him from the Royal Marines, to never give up, show kindness, honesty and try hard helped support him in tough times.
In all, Max has raised more than 750,000 pounds for Devon Hospice! This made up for about half of the donations they had lost for the year! Max even organized a huge camp at his school playground to show people what children can achieve if they all work together.

We need a varied diet, and one way to do this is by eating all he colors of the rainbow. The proof may be in the Mediterranean diet, which contains a lot of fruit, vegetables and healthy fats. "Eating a traditional Mediterranean diet means you consume different nutrients and phytonutrients," says Francesco Sofi of the University of Florence. Phytonutrients(植物营养素)are small chemical compounds produced by plants that help us digest larger nutrients.
Really, he adds, the colors of the Mediterranean diet are no different to other vegetable-based diets. There're thus other reasons why it is among the healthiest. For example, Mediterranean populations traditionally boil, rather than fry, their vegetables, which preserves nutrients, Sofi says.
The health benefits of a diet rich in fruit and vegetables on our brain and heart are among the most consistent findings within nutrition science, says Deanna Minich of the University of Western Sates in Portland, Oregon. Plant foods contain thousands of phytonutrients.
According to Tian-shin Yeh of Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, eating a colorful diet can help people avoid possible side effects of eating too much of one food. "Research has found that orange juice can reduce the risk of cognitive(认知的)decline, but too much intake is associated with type 2 diabetes," she says.
Minich argues that the rainbow diet isn't limited to fruit and vegetables, but includes other natural foods, such as herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, and even tea. She also considers white food as part of the rainbow diet, including tofu. Eating various colors could mean we eat more fruit and vegetables overall.
There're other ways to get a range of nutrients and phytonutrients from your diet, researchers say. One study found that participants who ate bitter and strong tasting vegetables over 12 weeks had lower blood pressure and blood sugar. It's also important to consider which parts of the plant you're eating, says Yeh. "The nutritional values for cabbage and turnip(萝卜)aren't that similar because one is the leaf and the other one is the root part of the plant," she says.
28. What else makes the Mediterranean diet healthy besides its rich content
A. Its easy availability B. Its appealing colors.
C. Its ways of cooking. D. Its easily being absorbed.

Everyone has a phone in their pocket nowadays, but how often do we really use them for their original purpose—to make a call Telephone culture is disappearing. What brought us to this moment, and what are its effects
"No one picks up the phone anymore," wrote Alex C. Madrigal on The Atlantic. "The reflex(习惯性动作)of answering—built so deeply into people who grew up in 20th-century telephonic culture—is gone."
The shift is of course due in large part to more communication options: Texting with photos, videos, emojis, reaction Gifs, links and even voice messages can be a more attractive option.
Texting is light and fun, not nearly as demanding of your attention as a phone call. It can also be done with multiple people at the same time. Social media, email and video calls have also eaten away at traditional phone calls.
In recent years, another reason has caused people to ignore phone calls completely: robocalls. Robocalls are automated messages from organizations verifying(核实)your phone number or telemarketers trying to sell something. Americans received 22.8 billion robocalls halfway through 2020, equaling an annual rate of 45.6 billion, slightly below 2018 numbers, according to You-Mail, a robocall protection service and blocking app.
As telephone culture disappears, what is the loss of a singular family phone doing to the family unit Early landline phones unified family members, whereas mobile phones isolate(使隔绝)them.
"The shared family phone served as an anchor(给以安全感的物品)for home," said Luke Fernandez, a Weber State University computer-science professor and co-author of Bored, Lonely, Angry, Stupid: Feelings About Technology, From the Telegraph to Twitter. With smartphones, "we have gained mobility and privacy. But the value of the home has been diminished, as has its capacity to guide and monitor family behavior and perhaps bind families more closely together," Femandez said
Of course, as technology progresses, lives always change for better or for worse. With the loss of telephone culture, families will need to find other ways to unite.
32. What has caused the traditional telephone to lose its appeal according to the text
A. People's addiction to social media. B. People's preference for robocalls.
C. People's growing need for privacy. D. People's wide range of communication choices.

A. Reduced. B. Strengthened. C. Instructed. D. Inherited.
34. What does Luke Fernandez point out
A. Smartphones tie families together.
B. The use of mobile phones has affected family bonds.
C. Smartphones help people monitor family behavior.
D. The value of home depends on how phones are used.
35. What does the article mainly talk about
A. The past and future of telephones.
B. The development of communication tools.
C. The downfall of traditional telephone culture.

Terracotta Warriors from Xi’an, Shanxi province, are well-known worldwide for their significance in history. Behind these relics, conservator-restorers work day and night to piece fragments together and restore these ancient figures.
Lan Desheng is one of these restorers. Having majored in cultural heritage at Northwest University in Xi’an, he has restored more than 150 figures in the past 25 years. He imagines himself as a doctor from the Qin Dynasty (221—206 BC), the time when these warriors were created. “There are many different types of doctors in the world, but few could have diagnosed and treated those Qin warriors, who lived over 2,000 years ago,” said the 52-year-old restorer.
Over the years the technology used to restore the figures has changed, but the fundamental methods remain the same. Abiding by the rule of minimum intervention, Lan and his team try to restore the relics by examining fragments and fitting them into the Terracotta Warrior figures.
The process demands great attention to detail and also enables him to get to know his “patients” better. Lan said the figures have colorful painting and sometimes even the fingerprints of the artisans who made the figures. The artisans’ names were also carved into the warriors, but these signatures might be hard to find. “If you look closely at the fragments, you can see traces of the artisans’ fingerprints and complete palm prints left after they heavily slapped the clay. There are also traces of the hairs they shed,” said Lan.
After decades of experience, Lan can already tell the differences between works of Qin Court craftsmen and those of local artisans. Without a doubt, patience is essential when restoring these figures. Sometimes it might take years for missing fragments of a figure to be found, if it can ever be recovered. “In some cases, we have been unable to locate the remaining parts of Terracotta Warriors that have been assembled for the past year or two. When this happens, there is nothing to do but stop work,” Lan said.
Despite these difficulties, Lan said this is his ideal job. He is proud to have contributed to the process of restoring these historic relics. “We employ materials used in the Qin Dynasty to restore and repair the warriors and their horses―a legacy we will pass on to the next generation,” he said.

What do you do when you are cold Your may wrap yourself in a warm blanket and sip a cup of steaming cocoa. All animals have different ways of responding to the cold. Some animals, such as Canada geese, move to warmer climates. Others sleep for the whole winter. But the wood frog does something unusual. It freezes.
The wood frog’s ability to freeze its body is vital to its survival. The wood frog can live in extreme climates from the Appalachian Mountains, across much of Canada, and into Alaska. When temperatures are cold, a wood frog digs down a few inches beneath the leaves on the forest floor. As the outdoor temperature decreases, the frog’s skin freezes. For a human this would result in cold injury, or the freezing of body tissues. But the wood frog has a natural defense against the cold that is remarkable.
Special proteins inside the frog’s body freeze the water in the frog’s blood. Water forced out of the frog’s other cells freezes as well. But a special solution produced inside the frog acts like antifreeze in a car, protecting the cells.
In cold temperatures the frog’s heartbeat, breathing, and brain activity stop. Because the organs are surrounded by ice, they do not rot away (腐烂) and do not require oxygen or nutrients. In fact, about 65% of the frog freezes. The frog, however, is still alive.
The wood frog can freeze for a few days or several months at a time. It can survive temperatures as low as 18°F without damage to its body. When the temperature outside increases, the frog thaws (变暖) along with its surroundings. Water and blood begin circulating in its body again. Within a few hours its heart starts beating again. Over the next several hours, the frog slowly regains use of its legs―and hops away.
Scientists are extremely interested in the wood frog’s ability to freeze. For years they have sought ways to freeze body tissue without damaging it. They hope that in studying wood frogs they may learn better ways of preserving human organs for transplants and other medical procedures. Whether these frogs can be used to help humans or not, they certainly are amazing.
8. To survive under severe conditions, wood frogs mainly benefit from__________.
A. fallen leaves.
B. their ability to freeze.
C. the other animals in the area.
D. the temperature of their environment.
9. What can we learn about wood frogs in winter months
A. They are not truly frozen during winter months.
B. They have a special process for storing energy.
C. They are not harmed by the body-freezing process.
D. They have a unique ability to know the temperature.
10. It can be learnt from paragraph 5 that a wood frog _________.
A. hops away before being frozen.
B. thaws faster than its surroundings.
C. uses the same amount of time to thaw as to freeze.
D. adjusts the body temperature with its surroundings.
11. The author’s purpose in writing the text is to explain _________.
A. the scientific studies that involve wood frogs.
B. how wood frogs migrate to warmer climates.
C. how wood frogs survive in unfavorable conditions.
D. the reasons scientists have been unsuccessful at freezing organs.
D
In 2016, the world’s population cast aside 49 million tons of electronic waste, known as e-waste. It has been calculated that this number will grow to more than 60 million tons by 2021.
What is causing the upsurge (激增) in e-waste Technology is becoming more and more widespread, covering almost every aspect of our lives. Meanwhile, the lifespan of devices is getting shorter - many products will be thrown away once their batteries die, to be replaced by new panies intentionally plan the obsolescence(废弃)of their goods by updating the design or software and discontinuing support for older models, so that now it is usually cheaper and easier to buy a new product than to repair an old one. Since prices are falling, electronic devices are in demand around the world.
As more people buy electronic equipment, manufacturers (制造商) are beginning to face shortages of the raw materials needed to make their products, so recycling and reusing materials from discarded products and waste makes economic and environmental sense.
Recycling e-waste is practiced both formally and informally. Proper or formal e-waste recycling usually involves taking apart the electronics, separating and sorting through the materials and cleaning panies must obey health and safety rules to reduce the health and environmental hazards of handling e-waste by using pollution-control technologies. All this makes formal recycling expensive. Informal recycling is typically unlicensed and uncontrolled. At informal recycling workshops, men and women recover valuable materials by burning devices to melt away non-valuable materials. Usually they do not wear protective equipment and lack any awareness that they are handling dangerous materials.
With the amount of e-waste growing around the world, recycling alone will not be enough to solve the problem. In order to reduce e-waste, manufacturers need to design electronics that are safer, and more durable, repairable and recyclable. The best thing you can do is resist buying a new device until you really need it. Try to get your old product repaired if possible and, if it can’t be fixed, resell or recycle it responsibly. Before you recycle your device, put any broken parts in separate containers and close these tightly to prevent chemicals from leaking. Wear latex gloves and a mask if you’re handling something that’s broken.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The reasons for e-waste’s sharp increasing.
B. The causes of devices’ price dropping.
C. The methods of recycling e-waste.
D. The results of updating devices.
13. What makes recycling e-waste meaningful according to the text
A. To improve the poor quality of e-devices.
B. To lower the costs of technology innovation.
C. To relieve companies’ lacking raw materials.
D. To increase the variety of electronic products.
14. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “hazards” in paragraph 4
A. Waste. B. Harm. C. Limits. D. Costs.
15. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph
A. Everyone should take action to reduce e-waste.
B. Companies should be mainly responsible for reducing e-waste.
C. Fixing a device could cause more pollution than buying a new one.
D. E-waste could be broken down by burying it underground for a long time.

Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone, not in features but in footsteps. As he grows you also age, and your ambitions become more unachievable. You begin to realize that your boy, in your footsteps, could probably accomplish what you hoped for. But footsteps can be muddied and they can go off in different directions.
My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports weren’t written until the final threat.
I’ve been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate working towards her master’s degree in English. But Jody When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student (技校学生). They’re called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body.
When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”, I was shocked. “Hey, he’s a good kid, ” I wanted to say. “And smart, really.”
I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don’t often make school honor rolls (光荣榜).
But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don’t have the abilities that motorheads have. I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated at $800. “Hey, I can fix it,” said Jody. I doubted it, but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.
My son, with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts from a junkyard, and ability from vo-tech classes. The cost was $25 instead of $800.
Since that first repair job a broken air-conditioner, a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting toaster have been fixed. Neighbours and co-workers trust their car repairs to him.
These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.
I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important, I have learned that fathers don’t need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.
My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.

The crocodile (鳄鱼) is an amazing animal. Why are they amazing Crocodiles are experts at survival. Scientists say they first appeared 200 million years ago and have lived longer than the dinosaurs by some 65 million years. One reason why they are such good survivors is that they can go for a very long time without eating. And they are expert hunters! They use their strong jaws to bite their prey (猎物) and then they swallow food whole. Another amazing fact about crocodiles is: When they lose a tooth, they grow one right back. A crocodile can go through 8,000 teeth in one lifetime!
While these facts are interesting, they really do not help to explain today’s expression: crocodile tears. Simply put, crocodile tears are fake sadness. You pretend to cry and feel bad or something when in fact you could not care less. A great word to describe crocodile tears is insincere.
The expression “crocodile tears” comes from an old story that crocodiles would cry tears as a fake show of guilt or sorrow to trick their prey. The prey would come closer and then become dinner. We know now that the story is not true. Scientists explain that crocodiles do produce tears. That is because while eating, they swallow too much air; which gets in touch with lachrymal glands (glands that produce tears) and forces tears to flow. But they’re not actually crying. Crying is purely emotional and is reserved for us humans.
When you use it, take some advice. You do not have to have actual tears flowing down your face to have “crocodile tears”. Sometimes, crocodile tears are worse than insincere. Those are the times when you are showing sadness but actually in your heart, you are quite happy about the situation.
8. How does the author mainly show that crocodiles are amazing
A. By telling stories. B. By giving examples.
C. By conducting experiments. D. By making comparisons.
9. “Crocodile tears” is often said to a person who________ .
A. has some insincere friends B. faces sorrowful situations
C. shows unreal sadness D. cares little about others
10. Why does a crocodile produce tears according to scientists
A. The flow of its tears makes it appealing. B. It pretends to be guilty to trick its prey.
C. It wants to show its emotional feelings. D. The way it eats forces its tears to flow.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. An Expression — “Crocodile Tears” B. What Crocodiles Actually Cry for
C. Unknown Facts About Crocodiles D. How Crocodiles Show Sadness
D
Young sunflowers turn and swing every day. New findings add to evidence that the plants are animal-like.
Harmer, a professor in the University of California at Davis’ Department of Plant Biology, carried out a series of experiments on sunflowers in the field, in pots outdoors and in indoor growth chambers.
By staking plants so that they could not move, Harmer showed that he could destroy their ability to track the sun. He also noticed that sunflowers prevented from moving were not as tough and leafy as those that were free to move. When plants were moved indoor with a settled overhead light, they continued to swing back and forth for a few days.
The indoor plants did start tracking the “sun” again when the apparent source of lighting was moved across the room. The plants could reliably track the movement and return at night when the artificial day was close to a 24-hour cycle, but not when it was closer to 30 hours.
When sunflowers track the sun, the cast sides of their stems grew more rapidly than the west sides. Ai night, the west sides grew faster as the stem swung the other way. The team identified a number of genes that were expressed at higher levels on the sunward side of the plant during the day, or on the other side at night. A plant growth-regulating hormone, called auxin, appears to be a key driver.
The “dance” to the sun cycle obviously slows when the sunflower matures and its flowers open up. At that point, the plants stop moving during the day and settle down facing the sun in the east.
“Bees like warm flowers.” Harmer said, adding that the bees are cold-blooded, so landing on a warm flower saves them energy and perhaps feels really good.
“The morning warmth changes the flowers in a way to make them more appealing to insects, perhaps causing them to release more attractive scents earlier in the day.” he said. “We’re currently testing this idea.”
12. Why did Harmer do the experiment on sunflowers
A. To see how sunflowers grow up.
B. To show what sunflowers’ genes are.
C. To study why sunflowers track the sun.
D. To check if sunflowers swing in cloudy days.
13. What does the underlined word “slaking” probably mean in Paragraph 3
A. Tracking. B. Fastening.
C. Preserving. D. Researching.
14. What is the result of sunflowers being stopped from moving
A. They won’t grow well.
B. They will grow faster than usual.
C. They won’t swing back though set free.
D. They will produce a number of new genes.
15 What is the advantage of sunflowers’ dance to the sun

这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了“鳄鱼的眼泪”这一短语的含义、来历和用法。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的One reason why they are such good survivors is that they can go for a very long time without eating. And they are expert hunters! They use their strong jaws to bite their prey (猎物) and then they swallow their food whole. Another amazing fact about crocodiles is: When they lose a tooth, they grow one right back. A crocodile can go through 8, 000 teeth in one lifetime!( 他们之所以能成为如此优秀的幸存者,原因之一是他们可以坚持很长时间不吃东西。
