My family lived in a tiny apartment in Hoboken, New Jersey. Every December my mom spread the word to anyone alone on Christmas Eve that she would be having an open house. My mom believed that no one should be alone during the holidays. If she could, she probably would have put an advertisement in the paper inviting the world.
As it was, our tiny apartment was stuffed, every room but my bedroom filled with partying adults on Christmas Eve. Sleep was impossible, but I tried to fall asleep anyway because Santa would not leave gifts for children who were awake. As I lay in bed, I wondered how Santa would even know I was asleep amid all the laughter and how he could sneak in and leave gifts with all those people around.
The Christmas Eve Open-House tradition continued. When I was 8 years old, we moved to the suburb, where we got to live in a lovely, one-bedroom apartment. That first Christmas there, my mom invited anyone she met who she learned would be alone on Christmas Eve一neighbors, co-workers, shop girls, the postman...the list went on.
The next year, a new neighbor moved in next door. His name was George, and he was an older gentleman. He always nodded a greeting when he saw us. It was around Thanksgiving when we saw him park in his space near ours. We were bringing in groceries, and my mom asked him if he had plans for the.holiday. When he said no, and he would spend it alone, my mom mentioned her open house on Christmas Eve.
“Please join us,” I said. He was already shaking his head no.
“But mom’s apple pie is really inviting.”
“I won’t be good company, I’m afraid,” he said. “I lost my wife a few months ago.” His eyes were fill with tears and he turned away. “Thank you anyway!” he called. He went into his apartment and quickly closed the door.

As a mountain, 1,642-foot Squaw Peak isn’t particularly challenging. But its inviting views of western Massachusetts have tricked hikers to its steep (陡峭的) and slippery cliffs, resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.
Henry Grant, a freshman at Ithaca College, was well aware of the danger of Squaw Peak. Thus he stayed ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up to him one day in August 2019, He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the scenery; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was admiring the view over the lip of the cliff with her husband.
When Grant’s mother rejoined him, the two turned to continue on their way. Suddenly, he heard a thump (撞击声), and another thump. Then he heard something frightening: “Paula! Paula!” a man yelled wildly. Grant turned around. The woman in pink was nowhere to be seen. She’d fallen off the side of the mountain.
Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees. Grant told his mother, “I hate to say this, but they’re probably going to find a body.” Uncertain they could help, Grant and his mother headed down the trail.
But when he saw hikers still searching, he decided to lend a hand. After assuring his mother that he would be safe, he made his way down the mountain alone, hoping he wasn’t too late.
After 15 minutes of pushing past the brush and slipping down the trail, Grant spotted a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink, in a kneeling position on a small rocky outcropping (突出处).
The woman had fallen about 75, feet. Amazingly, she was alive. “Paula!” Grant shouted. “Paula! Is that you ” The woman barely responded. She was hurt and her mind was not so clear. Grant called 911 to report her location. He waited where he was for a bit, but she kept trying to move, and every time she moved, she slipped a little more.

A zoo keeper had been working at a zoo for 15 years and never experienced any problems. He always worked the evening shifts (夜班) because he was trusted to properly lock up the zoo. On a warm summer night in late June, the zoo keeper turned off the lights and wished all of his animals a good night. He left the zoo and walked to his car in the parking lot. As he reached in his pocket, he realized that his keys had been left in the office. He quickly walked back to the zoo.

He turned on the flashlight on his phone and began to make his way to the office. When he walked by the panther's (豹) cages, he saw the young cubs playing together. He liked the zoo better at this hour because at night was when the animals come to life.
At last, he made it back to the office. Unfortunately this time the office door was locked and he knew that if he were to break the window, he would set off the alarm. Knowing there was no way inside, he decided it would be best to spend the night inside the zoo. The zoo keeper walked towards the bird cages because he knew he could sleep comfortably on the benches near the cages.
A few hours later, the zoo keeper heard a door slam (砰的一声) that woke him up.
“Quiet!" a voice whispered.
“What There's no one here, another voice said. "The old man left hours ago”
"Alright, let's just grab the animals and get out of here.”
The zoo keeper didn't know what to do. He began to weigh his options: he could trigger the alarm but that would raise questions as to why he was inside, or he could face the thieves but that could potentially put him in danger. Then he turned the corner but made sure not to be seen so that he could see who had entered the zoo.
