What do we know about the Mogao Caves
Mogao Caves (莫高窟) is a group of ancient caves which were built in different dynasties. It is famous for exquisite(精美的) murals(壁画) and various sculptures (建筑) kept inside the caves. With 735 caves more than 45,000 square meters of murals, and 2,415 colored sculptures of different sizes, the caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art(佛教艺术) spanning a period of 1,000 years.
The Mogao Caves, also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes(千佛洞), form a system of 492 temples, 25km southeast of the center of Dunhuang, an oasis(绿洲) strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu province, China.

PROMOTING CULTURE THROUGH DIGITAL IMAGES
Lanzhou, 9 August 2017. A group of asearchers and scientists from China and other countries are working together to help increase knowedge and appreciation of China's ancient cultural heritage. They are recording and collecting digital images of cultural relics from the Mogao Caves, which were a key stop along the Sik Road throughout China's ancient history. Nearly 500,000 high-quality digital photographs have been produced since the international project started in 1994.

A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words
Chen Lei is a senior teacher who takes photos of old buildings in Wuhan in order to preserve the city's cultural heritage.
Every day, Chen Lei takes his camera and walks through the older parts of the city. Over the years he has taken thousands of pictures of old buildings to create a record for the citizens. By interviewing the old people, he writes stories about the old buildings, which help to bring the interesting histories of the buildings to life. He also visits schools to tell students about their cultural heritage.
Neither people nor buildings last forever, but Chen Lei's photos can help us remember them.
