Limiting your child’s candy this Halloween might be more of a trick than a treat, experts
say. Once you’re a grown-up raising kids,that bag full of candy might be the scariest part of
Halloween — whether it’s concern about a potential sugar rush, worries of parenting
perfectionism or diet culture anxiety.
“It makes sense to be scared, because we’ve been taught to be scared,” said Oona

Experts aren’t suggesting kids have sugar all day every day. The American Heart
Association and the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee — groups charged with

levels of sugar. Too much added sugar has been associated with cardiovascular disease and
lack of essential nutrients.
But a healthy relationship with food has balance, and you can keep your kids’ diets full

China’ s booming coffee business has made it the second most important market for
global giant Starbucks, behind only its home U.S. market. But it’s also providing fertile
ground for new and innovative (勇于创新的) players catering to local preferences. One of the
latest in that group is Shanghai-based chain Manner Coffee, which, together with other similar
homegrown names, are reshaping the country’s coffee drinking landscape.
This year alone has seen 16 financing events in China’s coffee sector, with more than 5
billion yuan ($784 million ) pouring into the pace. Even the infamous Luckin Coffee, which
was removed from the Nasdaq last year after being exposed for massive fraud (欺诈), is once
again attracting investors’ attention.
Dubbed (被称作) as a seller of “street coffee” priced between 10 yuan and 20 yuan per
cup, equal to $ 3 or less, Manner quickly became popular among young office workers for its
less expensive price and high quality.
Manner and the other up-and-comers are thriving on a China coffee market that is
growing at a healthy 15% per year. After expanding slowly in its first three years, Manner’s
store count rose from just eight at the end of 2018 to 194 this year, with 165 in Shanghai and
the rest in Beijng, Shenzhen, Chengdu and other cities. It plans to keep expanding outside of
Shanghai by opening up to 100 new stores a year.
Meanwhile, Starbucks reported its same-store sales in the Chinese market grew by just
19% in its financial third quarter, down sharply from 91% growth in the previous quarter, due
in part to weak year-ago figures from stores affected during early stages of the pandemic in
2020. The company forecast that growth would slow further still in the following years.

Over the last few years, social mobility (流动性) between the generations has become an
important topic. Many possible factors that prevent children from moving further up the social
ladder than their parents have already been investigated, such as financial resources, the
educational system and genetics. Recently, Dr. Reto Odermatt (University of Basel) and Prof.
Dr. Warn Lekfuangfu(Universidad Carlos III de Madrid) conducted a study to investigate the
connection between career aspirations (抱负) in social mobilityand later life satisfaction.
The basis for the study is a dataset that follows the lives of over 17,000 people in the UK
who were all born in the same week in 1958, and continues to collect data to this day. Among
other things, the dataset gathers together information on each individual’s childhood
environment, the backgrounds of their parents, the participants’ abilities, their aspirations in
their youth, their jobs and their happiness as an adult.
The authors used this database to investigate how the aspirations of children and young
people affect their later life. And they eventually found that the educational and career
aspirations held by participants as teenagers were among the most important forecasters
overall for their later success in education and careers. This indicates that ambitious career
goals motivate people to invest more in their future career success.
The opposite is also the case: unambitious career aspirations can be an important
explanation for limited social mobility. The study showed that young people whose parents
were less well educated did indeed have less ambitious career goals. “This cannot be

solely by the differences in family income or in participants’ abilities. It is more the case that

Gender stereotypes are messing with your kid. It’s not just one movie. It’s not just one

differences between boys ana girls is not what we really want our kids to imitate.
While there are movies and TV shows that reject gender stereotypes—and Hollywood is

I’ve spent my adult life as a college professor teaching people how to think more
creatively and use more of their brainpower. Interestingly, this lifetime passion was awakened

handkerchief-throwing contest for the children. I was 13, full of enthusiasm and the spirit of
competition, so I threw myself into the contest, which I realize now was not meant to
