A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan.Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

During this past year, I've had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn't bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶),and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子)from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries:He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

Minutes later, the family warmly passed me a paper bag. Before I could thank them, they drove away quickly.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara.“He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara.“His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry.“We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried,“I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John.“You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

A Run to Remember
Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also had to deal with my parents' bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded suburb.
When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony(小马), had to be sold. Feeling helpless and alone, I couldn't eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I missed my family, my home and my pony. Finally, my father, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an old red horse for me at a local market.
My horse, Cowboy, was without doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon-toed and knock-kneed. But I didn't care about his faults. I loved him beyond all reasons.
I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy's looks. I never let on how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly out of the game. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the racing events. I chose barrel racing(绕桶赛), an event in which a horse and its rider attempt to complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn't feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn't need to. I came in next to last.
The bitter memory of Becky's smirks(得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(竞技场). We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way home I would be so tired; those five miles seemed twice as long.
All of our hard work didn't make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the course with ease.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
  My turn finally came.

No cheers filled the air when I finished my show.

答案
One possible version:
My turn finally came. As I urged Cowboy forward, he stumbled, and almost fell, much to the delight of the other riders. I jammed my hat down on my head, stroked Cowboy's big red neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first barrel, quickly whipped around it and with perfect precision rounded the second and thundered on to the third. We tore around the final curve and shot for the finish line.
No cheers filled the air when I finished my show. The end of our run was met with surprising silence. With the sound of my heart pounding in my ears, I heard the announcer call our time. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her proud fancy horse!I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that I'd always become a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the master of my own destiny.

Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out the window at the foggy field below. “NO!” she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk, the cow, was in Mama's daisy(雏菊) field.
I must have forgotten to fasten the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweatshirt over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets at the fair next week. But Buttermilk was eating the flowers.
Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the rope hanging on the porch. “Why can't you behave yourself ” she shouted at Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy field.
Buttermilk stood nipping (啃咬) tender flowers off their stems. Taylor rushed to the cow. Angry and anxious, she thought to herself: “When I grow up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble.”
Just as Taylor was about to snap the rope onto Buttermilk's collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Buttermilk couldn't stand Red.
Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.
“Thank goodness!” Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the latch (门栓).
She turned to look at the flower garden. Most of the daisies were either eaten or crushed.
Mama came out of the house. “What's going on ” she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.
“I forgot to latch the gate,” Taylor said. “I'm so sorry.”
“I know you are,” Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. “You learned an important lesson today.”
Taylor's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make up for the loss.

One possible version:
A painting on the wall caught Taylor's eye.“That's it,”she whispered. Taylor raced upstairs. She grabbed her art supplies, sat down at her desk and looked out of the window at the remaining daisies below. As her brush moved smoothly across the paper, daisies came alive. Totally lost in painting, Taylor made one painting after another. To keep it a secret, every day Taylor locked herself in her room, committed to painting more, which Buttermilk couldn't eat any more. Of course, never had she forgotten to lock the gate since then. By the end of the week, she had completed two dozen paintings. Appreciating her great masterpieces, she couldn't contain her excitement, jumping and clapping,“I made it.”
On the morning of the fair, Taylor said,“Mama, I have a surprise for you upstairs.” Out hurried Taylor, who exclaimed excitedly. Mama managed a weak smile.“Really Let's see it.” Instantly they reached Taylor's bedroom, and Taylor opened the door. What greeted them were daisy paintings everywhere, bright and cheerful in the morning light. “Wow,”said Mama, unable to utter more words.“Do you think anyone will buy them, Mama ”“Oh, yes, sweetie. I'm sure they will. And you have learned a better lesson than I expected,”Mama smiled.

In the fall of 2013, I was in fourth grade and my brother Mitch was in second. When many students had puppies, of course we wanted one too!
“Mom, can we get a puppy ” I begged her.
“Well,” she said, “it's a lot of work, so maybe when you are older.”
“But I'm already ten. I'm old enough to look after a puppy,” I said confidently.
“Yes, we should get a puppy!” echoed Mitch. “Everyone else at school has a puppy,” he exaggerated (夸张). Then Mom had to repeat what she had just said: We could get a puppy when we were a little bit older. Both Mitch and I were disappointed.
The next day, before getting ready for school, we ran into the kitchen, where Mom was preparing breakfast, and packing our lunches for school. With one voice, Mitch and I said, “We are a little bit older. Can we get a puppy now ” Mom smiled and said, “We will talk about it tonight with your dad, now go and get dressed!” We ran quickly into our room and got ready for school, anxious to get the day over so we could talk about the puppy we were going to get.
That afternoon, as soon as Mitch and I got home from school, we asked Mom once more when we could talk about getting a puppy. Mom reminded us, “We'll talk about it when your dad gets home from work, okay ” “Okay,” we both said and Mitch followed by asking, “When will Dad be home ” Mom told us that Dad would be home at about 7 o'clock and that we could talk to him after we got our homework done and all ready for supper.
7 o'clock came super slow. And it was not until 7:05 that I heard the key turn and the door open. I jumped up from the chair, and raced to greet Dad at the door.
“Dad!” I exclaimed. “Come on, come to the table so we can decide if we can get a puppy!”
“Okay,” Dad said as he came into the kitchen and sat down at the table. Then Mitch and I brought out all the reasons we could think of to persuade Dad to be on our side.

It was our turn to open our presents this particular Christmas morning. The living room was already covered with torn wrapping paper. Obviously, the children could hardly wait to discover the hidden treasures, which they had expected for nearly a month. Now we adults sat around the room with our presents at our feet, slowly removing the paper, trying to maintain our dignity in front of the children.
My wife, Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag (恶作剧) gifts. This always makes me a bit uneasy at Christmas or on my birthday, never knowing what form of embarrassment lies waiting for me under the thin borders of the wrapping paper.
Recently, my six-year-old daughter Christy seemed to busy herself with something while I was playing computer video flight games. Now she was standing directly in front of me. The excitement of the moment just beamed across her face. It was everything she could do to keep herself from helping me rip the paper from each present. Finally, I came to the last gift and with my natural Sherlock Holmes ability, I concluded that this had to be the gag gift. With everyone looking on, I decided to go ahead and get it over with—just let them have their laugh—and I tore the paper and there it was a toy airplane about two inches long. Our holiday guests started giggling as I looked up to my wife with an unpleasant smile on my face and blurted out (脱口而出), “A toy airplane Are you kidding me ”
Brenda gave me the look—that look that always tells me I have just said something wrong and should have given it a second thought. I had failed to look at the name tag before I opened the present to see who it was from. As I picked up the paper from the floor and read the name tag, my heart sank.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

One possible version:
On the tag were the letters that read,“To Dad, Love Christy”. Seeing her joy replaced by a look of total embarrassment and humiliation, I was seized by a strong sense of regret and pain. She slowly lowered her head down, seemingly praying that nobody would discover whom the gift came from. Without hesitation, I knelt down and embraced Christy tightly, trying to take back those words. I explained I had thought it was from Mom, but since it came from her, that made it different. However, no matter what I said, it could hardly remove the disappointment in her eyes and hurt in her heart. Confronted with the embarrassing situation, I was at a loss what to do.
Staring at the gift, I suddenly thought of a way to cheer her up. I took that toy airplane in my hand, turned on its switch and flew the plane. At the sight of the flying plane, I yelled with excitement, which amused other children who eagerly asked for a try. My eyes resting on Christy, I deliberately ignored their enthusiasm, flying the plane around her.“Let me try it first!” It wasn't long before Christy believed it was really a charming gift and grabbed for the plane, a big smile radiating from her face. From then on, I kept the little plane as a reminder of my girl's love and also, the power of words.

My father is a hard-working and friendly man. He taught me to drive, play baseball and fish when I was young. However, one other thing my dad's good at was holding a grudge(怨恨). For most of my teen years, he didn't speak to his younger brother, although they were at many family events together.
I was never sure why my dad was so angry with my uncle in the first place. They spent many festivals sitting at opposite ends of the table. It was simply something that we all accepted at the time.
When I was nineteen, I got a call in my college dorm that my dad was having serious medical problems. My mom picked me up in the middle of the night so we could be there in time. However, my dad was arranged to transfer to a better hospital the next day. I couldn't fall asleep. I tossed and turned.
That morning, as my mom and I walked down the hallway of the hospital, we could see straight into my dad's room. A tall man wearing a stylish suit stood by my father's bed with his back to us. Casually, my mom remarked how nice it was for the doctor to come by to see my dad so early in the morning.
But through my misty eyes, something about the scene surprised me. The man with his back to us was standing very quietly. He was holding both of my dad's hands. It was definitely not what a typical doctor would do. I stopped at the door of the room.

3.续写线索:发现真相—父亲恢复—兄弟亲近—思考及感悟。
One possible version:
I whispered softly to my mom,“That's not a doctor.” My mother stepped forward curiously, only to find that he was the last person we could imagine to have appeared. It was my uncle who had been caring for my father. I was about to open the door when my mother stopped me, leaving the two brothers alone longer. It must have worked some kind of magic, and my father soon recovered. All the doctors said it was nothing but a miracle.
The other miracle was my father's new relationship with his younger brother. They might still sit at the opposite sides, but the awkward silence was replaced by various jokes and stories. Later, they frequently went fishing and hiking together. I thought that what my uncle did during my father's illness warmed my father's heart and got the response it deserved. Now I realize that if you want to be forgiven by others, you should show your kindness first. No one will refuse the good will offered by others, especially when in trouble.

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn't interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine and business. I couldn't decide.
My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted for a month's placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties, and the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

I stopped my car.I lifted his unconscious body into my car with the help of some passers-by, and then raced back to the hospital. Since I wasn't allowed into the operation room, I drove home.
The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. The mother held my hands and started weeping. “Son, you are an angel,” she repeated over and over again. After comforting her, I went over to the boy. He managed to smile and squeezed my hand. No words were spoken between us—none were needed.I spent the rest of the day in a state of excitement, the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Jim slumped on the couch. Mother's Day was coming up, but he didn't have a present. “How can I buy a present without any money ”he thought.
Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree(疯狂购物) for her,” said the ad.
“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品). “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother's Day. Jim still hadn't heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now ” he wondered. He didn't have a present, and he didn't have a shopping spree, and he still didn't have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought hard.

The last race of the day was over. My breathing gradually stilled along with the ripples in the pool, but I stayed in the water, watching sadly as the winners gathered for the awards ceremony.
“Don't look so sad,” I heard a voice say behind me. I turned around to see a tall, blond, blue-eyed man standing on the edge of the pool. “You came in fourth, but you are the best in your country,” he smiled. “I'm Ken Schafer, and you ”
“Rima Datta.”
“And how old are you, Rima ”
“Fourteen, sir,” I replied lifting myself out of the water. Ken was a swimming coach from California and asked me about my life as a swimmer until then.
My eldest brother Anil had taught me how to swim, but I had no real training until I was nine when a coach from the National Institute of Sports came for just three months a year to train the boys at Mayo College, where our father taught. She set aside a couple of hours a week for the daughters of the staff. It was she who had corrected my mistakes and encouraged me to take part in competitions.
Surprised to hear how little steady training I had had, Ken introduced me to the National Institute of Sports in Patiala to be trained in summer. The training was hard, and I felt quite lonely away from my parents and all that was familiar. But it was Ken, with his tireless enthusiasm, his passion for swimming, and his faith in me that kept me focused.
I won my first gold medal at the national championship that year, a fact that filled me with immense joy and Ken with a sense of satisfaction that his work with me was paying off. Yet he realized that what I really needed was a team to train with and steady coaching.
Then he persuaded my parents to allow me to go to California and train there for a year. He even helped find a host family for me.

From the first moment at the airport where they had come to meet me, I knew things would be all right. Their smiles and their words of welcome as they greeted me felt like a warm embrace. I could not have found a kinder, more generous family than theirs.
The kindness of the host family and Ken gave me all the practical and emotional support I needed to train in a swimming club of California. As we came down to breakfast that morning, with very shiny faces and clean aprons, we found Father alone in the dining-room.
“Happy New Year, Papa! Where is Mother ” we cried.
“A little boy came begging and said his family was starving at home, so your mother went to see and...Ah, here she is.”
As Papa spoke, in came Mamma, looking very cold, rather sad, and very much excited.
“Children, don't begin till you hear what I have to say,” she cried and we sat staring at her, with the breakfast untouched before us.
“Not far away from here, lies a poor woman with a little newborn baby. Six children are huddled into one bed to keep from freezing, for they have no fire. There is nothing to eat over there; and the oldest boy came here to tell me they were starving on this bitter cold day. My little girls, will you give them your breakfast as a New Year's gift ”
We sat silent for a minute, and looked at the nice, hot porridge, creamy milk, and good bread and butter.
“I wish we'd eaten it up,” I thought, for I was rather a selfish child, and very hungry.
“I'm so glad you came before we began,” said Nan, cheerfully.
“May I go and help carry it to the poor, little children ” asked Beth, who had the tenderest heart.
“I can carry the pot,” said little May, proudly giving the thing she loved best.
“And I shall take all the porridge,” I burst out, heartily ashamed of my first feeling.
“You shall put on your things and help me, and when we come back, we'll get something to eat,” said my mother, beginning to pile the bread and butter into a big basket.

We were soon ready and set out. With May and Beth carrying the pot and I holding the porridge, we closely followed Mom. We plodded forward in the harsh wind and heavy snow. Then a shabby house appeared and we popped in. What greeted our eyes shocked us: At one end of the bed huddled six kids shivering with cold and the other lay a weak woman who just gave birth to a fragile child. Dirty pans and pots scattered about, with cockroaches creeping on the cracked floor.
Seeing the house totally in a mess, we fell to work immediately. May helped sweep the floor. Beth and Nan cleaned the sink. Mom and I started a fire, which immediately heated up the place. The oldest brother joined us and set the table, which was now laid with lukewarm porridge, creamy milk and yummy bread. All the work done, we sat around and enjoyed the delicious food with Mom saying it was the most meaningful New Year she had ever had. Meanwhile, tears of gratitude twinkled in the family's eyes as no words could convey their appreciation towards us.

Having been teaching anthropology (人类学) at Dartmouth College for 15 years, I still remember the day when I first encountered Margaret Mead's Coming of Age in Samoa, a very important book on the study of the social and cultural development of peoples.
When I was fourteen, I earned money in the summer by mowing lawns, and within a few weeks I had built up a body of customers. I got to know people by the flowers they planted, by the things they lost in the grass or stuck in the ground on purpose. I learned something about the measure of my neighbors by their preferred method of payment: by the job, by the month—or not at all.
Mr. Ballou fell into the last category, and he always had a reason. On one day, he had no change for a fifty, on another he was simply out when I knocked on his door. Still, except for the money, he was a nice enough old guy, always waving his hat when he'd seen me from a distance. Sure, I kept track of the total, but I didn't worry about the amount too much.
Then, one late afternoon in mid-July, the hottest time of the year, I was walking by his house and he opened the door, stopped me and let me in. The hall was cool, shaded, and it took me a minute to adjust to the dim light.
“I owe you,” said Mr. Ballou. “But...”
I thought I'd save him the trouble of thinking of a new excuse. “No problem. Don't worry about it.”
“The bank made a mistake in my account,” he continued, ignoring my words. “It will be cleared up in a day or two. But in the meantime I thought perhaps you could choose one or two volumes for a down payment.”
He gestured toward the walls and I saw that books were stacked (堆放) everywhere. It was like a library.

3.续写线索:自己选书的为难—Ballou先生帮助选书—第一次读书的感受—影响—感悟。
One possible version:
Mr. Ballou encouraged me to read, borrow or keep the books I liked. Facing so many books for the first time, I had no idea which one to choose. Nice enough, he handed a fairly thick book to me and asked me to tell him what the book was about the next week. It was my first encounter with world literature, and I was so impressed by the power a novel could contain and absorbed in reading all those vivid characters and the elegant language.
To this day, thirty years later, I clearly remember this experience. Now I am a teacher teaching anthropology at college. For that year, Mr. Ballou never paid me money for mowing his lawns but led me to the road that is far more valuable than money. A book, if it arrives before you at the right moment, in the proper season, will change the course of all your life.

Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to save money so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent's money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal ” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then—bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot(鼻涕)frozen on his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help him. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

One possible version:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for the yoghurt ” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man's situation he would be freezing. He didn't have a home or food to eat after all.We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn't have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window.Even if it was a matter of a few spoonfuls of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I was doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and we always have the opportunity to be a blessing to someone else.

I am a frequent interstate traveler. I was born in Ontario, Canada and thus all my family except my husband and children live there. So three times a year I make a trip north from Georgia to visit. I often travel by myself as my children are all adults and my husband is working.
Two years ago I went up in the spring and brought one of my sisters south for a month to take away the pains of a long winter. This year I did the same. It is interesting that many of my friends have said “Aren't you scared ” or “What if you break down ” I always respond that I have a lot of faith in the Lord and in myself. My husband is a mechanic and each year gives my car a good checkup. He will come for me if I need help.
Here is how my miracle happened in South Carolina. Heading north to take my sweet sister of 63 home to Canada, we were chatting away and I was driving 70 miles per hour in the third lane. Yes, the fastest lane. All of a sudden, I started to lose power. I said anxiously I was losing power and got over to the next and then the right lane. I was driving at about 40 miles per hour when I got to the first exit. I finally arrived at a Citgo station and pulled off the road.
I immediately called my husband but he didn't answer. I called two more times saying “please answer the phone” to myself. I was getting pretty upset thinking what I should do. I got out of the car and looked under it and smelled gas. Then I checked the oil and water. Luckily, both were good! My sister went into the gas station and said to the clerk if he knew anyone who could help us and then said prayers for us as she made her way to the rest room.

For two years, Mika and I were hunting for a cheap, cosy cottage by a stream. Then, late one night, something appeared online. A log cabin(小屋)on four acres, with a dirt road to the Susquehanna River and protected farmland on all sides. Perfect!
Except...
“You know where it is, right ” the realtor(房地产经纪人)warned when I called the next morning. Only two houses were down there. Everything else, for hundreds of acres, was open farmland. No police, no local government, not even a grocery store. The only place within fifteen miles to buy food was a one-room shop in the back of an Amish farm. If we moved there, he warned, we'd be completely on our own.
Whatever. It had to be better than our apartment here, right
We pulled into the dirt driveway to find horses eating grass along the fence, flowers blooming by the stream, and an Amish farmer rumbling(轰鸣着缓慢行进)past in a steel-wheeled truck. Unbelievable! We threw open the car doors, excitedly talking about the wonderful view. Pulling the realtor aside, we couldn't wait to make an offer. And a few weeks later, we left Philly for our dream home.
Solitude(独处)was going to be our biggest problem—or so I thought, until I heard Mika scream. I dropped the box I was unpacking and came running. I found her at the back door, holding two-year-old Maya in her arms, moving away from a six-foot black snake winding at her feet. She had been watering a row of plants and when she stepped from one to the next, the snake dropped from the roof and fell down right where Mika had been standing a second earlier.

Ellen Kalish runs the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in New York. She is used to getting calls about taking in wild animals. When a man called asking if she could rescue an owl(猫头鹰), she was happy to help. Then, the caller told her where this tiny owl was hiding. It was found inside the Christmas tree in the Rockefeller Center, where it is a yearly tradition to decorate trees. But this year, the tree looked a little worse. Many people made fun of its sagging(低垂的)branches. They called the tree a “symbol of 2020”, meaning its sad look reminded them how tough the past year was.
The tale of the owl's rescue quickly became the highlight of this year's tree. Before the tree was put up to decorate, one of the workers spotted the creature. It was buried in the base of the tree. The owl most likely traveled with the tree on its journey to Manhattan. So, how did it end up sticking in the tree in the first place
Kalish offered a few possibilities. The owl could have flown to the tree to hide there because it was injured and then got trapped later. Or maybe once the tree was loaded onto a truck, the branches squeezed it into the trunk. The bird may have just been too scared to move. Actually, there is no proof of where it came from. “That would be the last place it would want to go. Why would it pick that tree if it had a choice not to It's smart and it wouldn't do that,” she explained.
In that case, the worker had to bring the owl home. He decided to find a place that rescues wild animals. That was why he called the Center. After Kalish got the full story about the bird, she met the man at a gas station. Then the man handed her a box with the owl inside.

Kalish opened the box gently. The owl was standing in a cardboard box, looking straight at her. “It's a miracle! How did this bird survive this trip ”She named the owl Rockefeller, or “Rocky”.“It was super hungry,”she said, estimating that it probably had not been able to eat or drink for at least a few days. She immediately gave it water and food—a few frozen mice—which it ate quickly. A veterinarian examined it, and X-rays showed that it had no broken bones or inner damage. By Thursday, Rocky started to bathe itself—a sign that it was feeling good.
Several days passing, the owl looked in good shape. On Friday, Kalish moved Rocky to an outdoor practice cage so it could get used to new circumstance and Kalish could monitor its flight. By Tuesday at dusk, it seemed ready to go. Kalish brought Rocky to a clearing in nearby forest, removed it from its carrier and raised it toward the sky. Rocky sat on Kalish's hand for several moments, surveying its surroundings. Then, it flew off, settling in a nearby pine tree.

A freezing downpour washed the street in front of the small-town bar. I sat gazing into the watery darkness, alone as usual. I had been in that old bar for half an hour, quietly drinking, when my thoughtful eyes finally focused on a medium-sized lump in a puddle (水洼) a hundred feet away. For another ten minutes, I looked out through the window trying to decide if the lump was an animal or just something.
The night before, a dog named Shep had come into the bar begging for potato chips. He was starving and just the size of the lump in the puddle. Why should a dog lie in a cold puddle in the freezing rain I asked myself. The answer was simple: Either it wasn't a dog, or it was, and he was too weak to get up.
The wound in my right shoulder ached all the way down my fingers. I didn't want to go out in the storm. Hey, it wasn't my dog. It was just a stray on a cold rainy night, a lonely drifter (流浪者). So was I, I thought, as I gulped(大口吞咽) down what was left of my drink and headed out the door.
He was lying in the three inches of water. When I touched him, he didn't move. I thought he was dead. I put my hands around his chest and raised him to his feet. He stood unsteadily, and his head hung like a weight at the end of his neck. His floppy ears were just hairless pieces of flesh dotted with open sores (伤口).
“Come on, Shep,” I said, leading him to a corner next to the bar, where he lay on the cold cement floor and closed his eyes. A block away I could see the lights of a late-night convenience store. It was still open. I bought three cans of dog food and fed him. He couldn't swallow but looked at me. He was dying!

One possible version:
The local vet(兽医) was still at his office, so I loaded the poor creature into a taxi and headed there. After a quick check on the poor dog, the vet shook his head with regret. He promised me he would try his best but Shep was unlikely to get through it unless there was a miracle. While the vet treated the sores carefully, I tried to drop water in his mouth and fed him with food bit by bit. I never gave up hope of getting him saved. Many times I would caress his neck, whispering something in his ear to encourage him to hold on. He was so weak that he had to stay in the vet's.
Three days later, when I opened the door of the vet's, Shep welcomed me with wild enthusiasm. He wagged his tail from left to right as if to say “Thank you”. He was gaining strength and improving for the better. Tears filling my eyes, I knew all our efforts were worthwhile. Soon, the dog recovered from severe sores and I adopted him and took him home. Once in a while, I would go to that bar with Shep, a drink for myself and potato chips for him. What would have happened if I hadn't stepped out on that stormy night Care and kindness really made a difference to both of us.

On Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing with his father at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. They had a wonderful day and decided to drive home to Massachusetts after a final run. They took a chairlift to the top of the mountain, where they split up to go down in different trails. When the father finished his run, he headed to the parking lot to wait for his son. However, Nicholas didn't show up.
It turned out that a fierce snowstorm had swept into the area as Nicholas was on his way down. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path and ventured down the west side of the mountain. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost and all alone. His way back to the ski trails was blocked. What's worse, he didn't have any food or water with him, let alone his cell phone or other supplies. The sun began to sink and he was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about Bear Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild that he used to watch on TV. In the show, Grylls was abandoned in a wild area and had to help himself out. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop moving around. He needed the energy, and the winds weren't as strong in the valley where he stood as they were up on the mountain. Plus, there was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to seek shelter from the freezing wind and snow. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
When evening came, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate some snow and drank some water from nearby stream so that he wouldn't dehydrate (脱水). Then he returned to his cave and slept.

Jim slumped on the couch. Mother's Day was coming up, but he didn't have a present. “How can I buy a present without any money ”he thought.

Alone on the long flight to Los Angeles, I was filled with doubts, as I had never lived with a strange family.

The next day, Nicholas heard the sound of a snowmobile.
