阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Once upon a time, two brothers, who lived on adjoining(毗邻的)farms, fell into conflict. It was the first serious fight in 10 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch.
Then the long cooperation fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.
Very early one morning there was a knock on the older brother's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox.“I'm looking for a few days' work,” he said. “Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you ”
“Well as it happens there is,” said the older brother.
“I do have a job for you. Look across the stream at that farm. That's my neighbour. In fact, it's my younger brother. Once there was a meadow(草地)between us and last week he used his bulldozer(推土机)and plowed a stream between us. See that pile of wood by the barn I want you to build me a fence, a 2-metre-high fence, so I won't need to see him or his place anymore.”
The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post hole digger and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you.”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
The older brother helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day.

The neighbour, his younger brother, was coming across the bridge merrily with his hand outstretching to the older brother.

One possible version:
The older brother helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, digging and nailing. At sunset when the older brother returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The older brother's eyes opened wide and his jaw dropped. There was no fence there at all; instead, there was a bridge stretching from one side of the stream to the other.
The neighbour, his younger brother, was coming across the bridge merrily with his hand outstretching to the older brother. “You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I've said and done,” he said. The two brothers then met in the middle of the bridge, took each other's hand and embraced. Their conflict was finally at an end. They then saw the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder. “No,wait. Please stay a few days. I have a lot of other projects for you,”said the older brother. “I'd love to stay on,” the carpenter said, “but I have many more bridges to build.”

Writing 2
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There are a number of volunteer organizations out there that deal with things like clothing donation and the sale of remaining books. Retired school teacher Cathy McAllister has been a member of such an organization, VNSA, since 2012. Her duties in this regard involve working throughout the year to help prepare the books for their February sale and acting as the chair of the sale itself. This means that she helps coordinate(协调)all the other volunteers that help out before, during, and after the event.
It was before the 2019 book sale and Cathy once again found herself sitting among a towering pile of books and sorting through them to ensure that they would be in good enough condition to resell. As she was working, she came upon a book. The slightly broken book was in fair condition but it was one of four copies she had already found, and she had saved three of those already. The others had been much more gently used as well. Though she didn't like doing it, she had done this long enough to know that the only remaining choice was to throw it into the pile for repurposing.
A greedy book lover herself, Cathy felt guilty about throwing away a perfectly good book. Before she threw it away, she decided to check for more serious damage inside that might justify her giving it up.
When she opened the cover, Cathy was surprised to see that a part had been hollowed out inside the book. It looked as though someone had rather expertly hollowed out a significant space. What's more, the book's previous owner had chosen to hide something in that space. She looked down and saw that someone had hidden four packages in the space, each containing ten$100 bills. Cathy's first thought was that the bills were toy money that perhaps a kid had hidden inside as part of some childish game or something.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
But Cathy soon realized that these were real$100 bills.

Luckily for Cathy, the book also contained the name of the book owner.

One possible version:
But Cathy soon realized that these were real $100 bills. Whoever had owned the book had chosen to hide $4,000 inside the book. Cathy's second thought upon seeing the money was that this was sufficient to do charity. She didn't bother considering keeping the money herself. It just didn't seem right to keep it for any reason. Regardless of how much good she thought she might be able to do with the money, Cathy decided that the only realistic choice left to her was to return it to its owner.
Luckily for Cathy, the book also contained the name of the book owner. Using this name, Cathy might be able to find its rightful owner. Still, it would take a little digging. Thankfully, the book's previous owner happened to have a pretty unusual last name. This made Cathy's Internet search much easier. After only about ten minutes online, Cathy found them. The money belonged to a man and his daughter. So thankful were they for Cathy's honesty that they actually ended up donating a generous amount to VNSA to show their gratitude.
精彩语句 1.精美词汇 sufficient adj.足够的;充足的 regardless of 不管;不顾 end up最终;结果

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Arthur was messy. He didn't try to make a mess, but he didn't try to clean up much of the mess, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he finished eating. He never made his socks into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back into the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. “Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.
“You know what, Arthur I'm not going to ask you again. I will not clean what you made today.” And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom's spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn't like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur's feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks ” Arthur called.
“There weren't any socks in your hamper, so I didn't wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt!”

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When a tornado touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined. One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely ruined home. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear. The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves. I taped the picture of the young family to our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan.
“These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We'll share what we have with them.”
I brought three large boxes and placed them on the living room floor, encouraging the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods that they no longer needed.
Meghan walked up to Lucy, her much-loved doll, and hugged it tightly to her chest. She stopped in front of the box, gave her doll a final kiss, and then laid her gently on top of the other toys.
“Oh, honey,” I said. “You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”
Meghan nodded seriously, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too.”

The boys had watched, open-mouthed, when their sister placed her favorite doll in the box. Without a word, the boys rose and went to their rooms and came back carrying their favorite toys to the living room. Astonished, I realized that the boys had also recognized what little Meghan's action meant. I think all of them want to make these poor people who have nothing happy like them. Swallowing tears, I pulled all three of them into my arms.
I looked at my children for a long moment. I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes. I replaced it with the new green jacket that I had found on sale last week. I hoped the young woman in the picture would love it as much as I did. What Meghan did taught me a lesson that the true spirit of donating is to give with your heart.

He was in the first third-grade class I taught at Saint Mary's school. All of my students were dear to me, except Mark Eklund. He often talked constantly. I had to remind him again and again that talking without permission was not acceptable.
One morning my patience was growing thin, and then I made a new teacher's mistake. I looked at him, saying, “If you say one more word, I am going to use tape to shut you up!”
It wasn't ten seconds later when Chuck, another student, blurted, “Mark is talking again.” Since I had stated the punishment, I had to act on it. I took a roll of tape out of my drawer. Without saying a word, I proceeded to Mark's desk, tore off two pieces of tape and made a big X over his mouth. When I walked back to Mark's desk and removed the tape, his first words were, “Thank you for correcting me, Sister.”
One Friday, I asked the students to list the names of the other students, leaving a space between each name. Then I told them to write down the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates. As they left, each one handed me the paper.
That Saturday, I wrote down the name of each student and listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday I gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. “Really ” I heard the whispers. “I never knew that meant anything to anyone!” “I didn't know others liked me so much!” Then Mark said, “Thank you for teaching me, Sister.”
Years later, after I returned from vacation, my parents met me at the airport. My father cleared his throat as he usually did before saying something important. “The Eklunds called last night,” he began. “Really ” I said. “I haven't heard from them in years. I wonder how Mark is.” Dad responded quietly. “Mark was killed in Vietnam,” he said. “The funeral is tomorrow, and his parents would like it if you could attend.”
I had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. Mark looked so handsome, so mature.

After the funeral, Mark's mother and father found me.Trembling and trying to fight back the tears, his father handed me a billfold, “They found this on Mark. We thought you might recognize it.” Opening it with kid gloves, I found two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. Instantly I recognized that the pieces of paper were the ones on which I had listed all the nicest things that Mark's classmates had said about him. “Thank you so much for doing that,” Mark's mother said, occasionally biting her lower lip to stop it from trembling. “As you see, Mark has bettered himself. It's all because of you and your list.”
Mark's classmates started to gather around us. Charlie smiled, “I still keep the list in the top drawer of my desk at home.” Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn list to the group. “I carry this with me at all times,” Vicki said. “It is a kind reminder when I encounter difficulties.” That's when I finally sat down and cried,a mixture of regret and relief overwhelming me. If only I hadn't treated Mark so rudely! Thank goodness for allowing me to make it right! Indeed, the smallest kind things we do perhaps mean the most to others. My great-grandfather, my grandfather and my father were farmers. My father had a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respected him and was indeed skilled at doing some farm work, I didn't agree that I should automatically follow in my father's footsteps.
When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father's friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane. I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt. I was just enjoying it. I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that day a thought crept into my mind that I wanted to become a pilot, but I doubted whether my father would support me. After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me. Therefore, I put the thought to the back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding onto his previous idea.
Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm, I would frequently visit Tom's airport. Gradually, I got familiar with every button and switch on the aircraft and I learned a lot about planes, such as how to fill the plane with fuel, how to check the engines and so on. But what I had learned just left me wanting more, so I decided to go to college to become a professional pilot.

One possible version:
This time I would not hide my desire any more. Determined to follow my heart, I explained to my father how I felt. I told him that I wanted to go to college to learn to fly instead of being a farmer. After saying this, I waited nervously for his reaction. To my surprise, he approved of my request, and he told me he was moved by my perseverance. With his support and my efforts, I was admitted into my ideal college.
At the graduation ceremony, with my father present, I, as “Best Pilot”, had to deliver a speech. In my speech, I shared with the audience my story about how a teenager realized his dream. Faced with difficulties, I took a path that led me do something that needed passion, training and practice. I also owed my success to my father's support. Without his understanding, I couldn't have pursued my dream. At the end of my speech, I spotted my father's watery eyes, and said, “Dad, I made it!” His face lit up with pride.

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.
The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out
Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was capable of more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through the test, the manager administering the test remarked, “This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard ”
“The thought hadn't crossed my mind.”
“Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is to complete a certification class.”
Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me—You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.
Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. A well-intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident;emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself.

Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck.

One possible version:
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. Sure enough, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands desperately. I quickly dived into the water and swam towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had sunk to the bottom of the pool, his head hanging down, which filled my heart with fright and concern. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. I could tell that he had no heartbeat and wasn't breathing. Every second counted! Without hesitation, I did first aid, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as trained. Other guards watching anxiously, I carried on, sweating. Suddenly, a stream of water burst out of his mouth and the boy coughed intensely. Seeing the boy regain consciousness, those around broke into cheers. Exhausted, I sighed with relief. I thought had I accepted that easy position, I would have been nothing but a bystander. I'm happy I didn't take the easy way out.

An honest mistake
Karie double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 points today, she'd win her class' First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary. Plus, Ms. McCormack had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She'd spelled honesty, not honestly. She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
Ms. McCormack graded the test papers at the break. Meanwhile, Karie sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then, Ms. McCormack walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. As if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms. McCormack's feet flipped into the air.
“Congratulations, Karie! You did it!” she announced while upside down.
The whole class burst into applause! Ms. McCormack righted herself and presented Karie with her prize. Karie grinned as she read the label on the box:
To Karie Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Everything OK ” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school. Karie didn't answer. As if by magic, she took out her spelling test paper and prize and showed them to her mother. Mom hugged her, asking her to put the test paper on the fridge so that Dad could see it when he got home.
Karie took another look at the test paper before putting it on the fridge. Her hands stopped in mid-air. She just couldn't believe her own eyes. Honestly
YES! H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
Mom sensed something unusual and asked why. Karie stuffed the test paper into her backpack and explained that she was just too excited. Mom brought her some tea. Yes, a “t” was exactly what she needed.
After drinking a little, Karie plodded down the hall, lost in thought. How could she tell the class she hadn't earned the prize after all That Ms. McCormack did the handstand for nothing

One possible version:
Later Dad came in with excitement. “Where's your spelling paper, Karie ” Dad asked eagerly. Karie looked away from her father. Anyhow, she reluctantly went to her room and pulled out the test paper. Dad fixed his eyes on the paper, a pleasant smile lifting the corner of his mouth. “I'm proud of you, sweetie. We need to celebrate it tonight.” Karie pretended to be smiling all the time. Meanwhile a sense of guilt rose inside her. Feeling she didn't deserve the prize, she had a sleepless night for the first time in her life.
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual. Ms. McCormack was unlocking the classroom. “You're an early bird.” Ms. McCormack said. Karie's hands trembled. She handed her teacher the spelling paper and the dictionary. “I can't keep this. I misspelled ‘honestly’ and you didn't catch it.” For a moment, Ms. McCormack stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary. Then picking up her pen, she crossed out the word “perfect” and wrote “honest” before returning the dictionary to Karie. “Keep this. But for honesty.”

When Ruth was sixty-eight years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in California. They headed for their cabin, moving forty miles up and down the mountains in their car, along a narrow one-lane road that wound terrifyingly close to cliffs (悬崖).
After dinner, Marcy announced the water tank had little water and that she would drive the car down to the pump and get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow road by herself, but Judy reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up these roads for years.
“Just be careful, Marcy,” her mother warned. “They've had a drought up here and the road along the cliff is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.”
Ruth and Judy watched Marcy from the big window where they could see the road winding down the mountainside. Fifteen minutes later, Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed, “Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The car and Marcy—they went over! We have to help her!Come on!”
Judy took off running desperately. Grabbing a three-foot-long walking stick against the cabin door, Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight after the first turn in the road. Breathing hard, Ruth ran on and on, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.
Suddenly she stopped, not knowing where she was. “Marcy!Judy!”she shouted.
A faint voice came, “Momma!”It was Judy.
Ruth screamed into the darkness, “Judy, where are you ” Off to her right and down the cliff she heard, “Down here,Mother!Don't come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I'm down about ten feet.”
“Oh dear! Judy, what can I do ”
“Just stay back, Momma!”
Facing the situation, Ruth felt her heart was pounding, and chest pains almost took her breath away. She started to sob, totally at a loss what to do.

I was driving in western Texas and I got sleepy. I saw a sign that said GAS/EAT, so I pulled off.
The man behind the counter was the only person in the diner. I judged him to be about forty years old. His hair was just starting to get gray above the ears. I sat down at the counter and ordered coffee and apple pie. He brought the steaming hot coffee. “Care for cream and sugar ” he asked. I said, “Please.”
A car pulled up outside. Two men came right in. The tall one said, “Two coffees. Do you have a road map that we can look at ”
“I think so,” the man behind the counter said. He got their coffee first and then started looking through a pile of papers by the telephone, trying to find a map. It was easy to see he was the type who would go out of his way to help you. After a minute or two, he came up with one.
“This one's a little out of date, but...” He put it on the counter, beside their coffee cups.
The two men spread out the map and leaned over it. The tall one ran his finger along the Rio Grande River and shook his head. “I guess there's no place to get across to Mexico,” he said to his pal, but the man behind the counter heard him, and his face lit up like a light bulb. “You are trying to find the best way south I might be able to help you with that.”
“How ”
He said, “Just a minute.” He then spent a lot of time going through the papers by the telephone again. “Thought I might have a newer map,” he said. “Anything new would show the Hackett Bridge. Anyway, I can tell you how to find it.”
“Here's a town called Hackett,” the tall one said, still looking at the map. “It's on the river, just at the end of a road. Looks like a pretty small place.”
“Not any more. It has just about doubled in size since they built the bridge.”
The tall man finished his coffee, folded the map, put it in his pocket, and stood up. “We'll take your map with us,” he said. The man behind the counter shrugged and said, “Glad to let you have it.”

An anxious call came into Jimmy Gilleece's bar. A newly-married woman, who had spent the afternoon at the bar, couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash—but her wedding ring was inside.
Gilleece didn't like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours looking through security-camera videos, watching the woman's every step in the bar until she went to sit on a chair outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man approached the bench, slipped something into his pocket, and walked off. Gilleece posted a clip (片段) on the bar's Facebook page. “I didn't want to punish him,” he said. “I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was.”
Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Prather, who admitted having taken the wallet and told Gilleece he'd done it because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake (假的), so he took the money and threw the wallet off the dock (码头) into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the dock, where they got talking and Prather revealed that he wasn't getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Judging from Prather's small body and red cheeks, Gilleece thought he was more of a kid than a criminal.
But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing charges. “He would be going to prison. I have to help him somehow,”Gilleece thought.

Gilleece grew increasingly worried, especially when the policemen began questioning Prather, attempting to get him to admit keeping the ring. Each passing minute increased the chance that they would arrest the young man.
Then suddenly a diver came up to the surface of the water. In his hand was the wallet and inside was the ring. Loud cheers erupted from the crowd. Gilleece quickly called the wallet's owner, who was wild with joy and immediately dropped the charges against Prather. I had never been more anxious in my life. I had just spent the last three endless hours trying to get to the airport so that I could travel home. Now, as I watched the bus driver set my luggage on the airport sidewalk, I realized that my anxiety had only just begun.
This was my first visit alone to the international terminal of the airport, and nothing was familiar. I couldn't make sense of any of the signs. Where was the check-in counter Where should I take my luggage I had no idea where to go, feeling as if I were deaf and blind and stupid. I began to panic. What time was it Where was my plane I had to find help because I couldn't be late!
I tried to ask a passing businessman for help, but my words all came out wrong. He just frowned and walked away. What had happened I had been in this country for a whole semester, and I couldn't even remember how to ask for directions. This was awful! Another bus arrived at the terminal, and the passengers came out carrying all sorts of luggage. Here was my chance! I could follow them to the right place, and I would not have to say a word.
I dragged my enormous suitcase behind me and followed the group. We finally reached the elevator. Oh, no! They all fit in it, but there was not enough room for me. I watched in despair as the elevator doors closed. I was abandoned again! I had no idea what to do next. I got on the elevator when it returned and stared at all the buttons. Which one could it be I pressed button 3, because I thought I saw those passengers press button 3, though it was no more than a quick glance. The elevator slowly climbed up to the third floor and came to a stop. There were no check-in counters! I looked around shyly, only to find an elderly man standing at the corner. Another disappointing day was passing, and Bryan was driving his beat-up old car home. He was out all day looking for a job. It was getting dark and light snow was coming down, so he almost didn't see the old lady standing on the side of the road. It was clear that she needed help. He pulled up in front of her obviously brand new and expensive car and got out.
While nobody had stopped to help for the last hour and there was a smile on his face, she was worried when he approached her. He didn't look safe. He looked poor and hungry.
He could see she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said, “I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in your car to keep warm My name is Bryan.”
A tyre was flat. Bryan fetched tools from his own car to change the tyre. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening her car's nuts, she rolled down the window, said thanks and asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened without his help.
Bryan never thought twice about the money. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance he or she needed. He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home.
Soon the lady saw a small restaurant. She went in to grab a bite to eat and warm up before she made the last leg of her trip home. Kent was a manager of a furniture agency. His establishment nearly went bankrupt (倒闭)because of the wrong decision he had made. He was so regretful and depressed that he planned to drive to a bar alone to release his emotions.
It was near midnight in an extremely cold winter, and the temperature was minus 9 degrees centigrade. There were few people in the street. Suddenly, a figure of an old madam entered his line of sight. She was standing sideways near a platform, dressed in a plain coat, dragging a suitcase, and holding a plastic bag in the other hand. The old lady was seemingly more than 80. She was trembling in cutting wind. Now she kept motioning Kent for a ride. Although Kent was somewhat angry about the old madam's disturbing, he wouldn't like to leave her in the cold night. He noticed she coughed violently and thought that she might be ill and really needed help. So he braked near her.
The madam said,“Would you please take me for a ride I can offer double fare...” Kent interrupted her, “I will charge you nothing! Come on!” The madam pointed to her luggage and said, “Could you put my suitcase into the car ” Kent stepped out and put it in the trunk.
Kent proceeded to drive. He stopped at a petrol station where he wanted to purchase gallons of gasoline (汽油). During the interval they waited in a queue, the madam began her narration, “Could you please send me to the charity house in the suburbs I want to send them something. I had been given help there 50 years ago. The president and workers were all good guys.” She burst into tears, “Now they've all passed away. The life was tough at that time, but we all loved and cared about each other. I've held a desire to be back there again for long.” Kent realized the madam was recalling a section of the good missing days. A complicated feeling surrounded him, and he decided to cancel his plan and stay with the old madam.

The old madam handed her suitcase over to the doorkeeper, inside it being clothes and toys she collected. Then they looked round the house and left. On the way back, the old madam asked for another ride, “Please send me to the rest home in the town, sir.”
Hearing this, Kent lapsed into silence, because he knew the rest home was for patients with incurable diseases. “I have been seriously ill for a long time and will soon die of lung cancer. I come out to say goodbye to my life. Now I will have no regrets before death. Thanks for your help!” the madam made an explanation calmly, with a bright smile on her face. I am a frequent interstate traveler. I was born in Ontario, Canada and thus all my family except my husband and children live there. So three times a year I make a trip north from Georgia to visit. I often travel by myself as my children are all grown and my husband is working.
Two years ago I went up in the spring and brought one of my sisters south for a month to take away the pains of a long winter. This year I did the same. It is interesting that many of my friends have said “Aren't you scared ” or “What if you break down ”. I always respond that I have a lot of faith in the Lord and in myself. My husband is a mechanic and each year gives my car a good checkup. He will come for me if I need help.
Here is how my miracle happened on Interstate 85 North in South Carolina. Heading north to take my sweet sister of 63 home to Canada, we were chatting away and I was driving 70 miles per hour in the third lane. Yes, the fastest lane. All of a sudden, I started to lose power. I said anxiously I was losing power and got over to the next and then the right lane. I was driving at about 40 miles per hour when I got to the first exit. I finally arrived at a Citgo station and pulled off the road.
I immediately called my husband and he didn't answer. I called 2 more times saying “please answer the phone” to myself. I was getting pretty upset thinking what I should do. I got out of the car and looked under it and smelled gas. Then I checked the oil and water. Luckily, both were good! My sister went into the gas station and said to the clerk if he knew anyone who could help us and then said pray for us as she made her way to the rest room.

The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and a little wet, and the street lamp gave little light. Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night.
When he reached the middle of the bridge, he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.
Just then, he heard short, quick steps close behind him. By the time he reached the other side of the bridge, he could almost feel someone at his heels. He turned round and there stood a man in a large coat. A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen.
Frank said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where the Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.
Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find the Oakfield House at such an hour. He knew that the people who lived there were very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he began following the stranger quickly.
The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. When about half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground at the other side.

One possible version:
Now Frank knew what the man wanted to do.Everyone knew that the Oakfield House was filled with artwork worth millions of dollars. It was clear to Frank that the family inside was in danger. Would the man have a weapon Would he be strong enough to overpower him before he could harm the people inside Frank's heart was racing with fear. He reached for his cellphone and called the police.
Frank couldn't just stand in the dark and wait. He had to do something, even if it meant risking his own life. At his feet he found several good-sized stones, and he threw them with all his strength right at the windows of the house. The clatter woke up the people inside the house and a light came from upstairs. The man froze, not quite knowing what had just happened. Lights came from everywhere in the house and within a minute the night was filled with sounds of police sirens screaming towards the Oakfield House.

The rain came down steady and hard. Jason Storie heard it but was not worried as he prepared for a day of caving with five friends in a remote spot 80 miles northwest of his home in Duncan, on Canada's Vancouver Island.
It was 6 a.m. on December 5, 2015.As a newcomer to the sport, Jason had gone caving only four times. This would be his toughest outing yet: a cave called Cascade. It was dangerous enough that the entrance was blocked by a locked metal door to keep the casual cavers out. About a mile long and 338 feet deep, Cascade was full of turns and barely passable.
Jason was new among the group, with the least experience and, at 43, older by a decade or more. It was his friend Andrew Munoz, 33, who introduced him to the sport. Unlike Jason, Andrew was an expert caver—a former caving guide, actually.
They hiked a bit before coming to the door, which sat in the ground—you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it. It was 10 a.m. With their way lighted by headlamps, they walked down a narrow passage studded with sharp rocks. The silence was broken by a drip, drip, drip from above. Soon the drip turned into a light but steady flow, and they were wading in water up to their ankles, then to their shins.
Two hours later, they approached one of the features that made the cave unique: a narrow passage not big enough to stand up in that led into a short, tight downhill. This had a name: Bastard's Crawl. Four streams met here, and indeed, the water was flowing more quickly. The sound of the water had turned into a roar. When they finally neared the top of Bastard's Crawl, there were barely four inches of air left between the water and the ceiling, not enough for them to keep their heads up to breathe. They came to terrifying realization that they were in danger!

The water kept rising, and there was no hope of rescue.

Slowly but steadily, the group made their way forward.

One possible version:
The water kept rising, and there was no hope of rescue. The hours passed. Jason and Andrew didn't dare to move for fear of slipping. They dozed off and then jerked themselves awake. Every once in a while, one of them turned on the headlamp to check the water level. An hour later, the water level went down enough that they could try an escape. Stiff from keeping in one position for 12 hours, they slowly unfolded their bodies. Jason screamed in pain, but he was determined not to let it stop him.
Slowly but steadily, the group made their way forward. Still, each time Jason moved a leg, he cried out. Over the next 90 minutes, they made their way toward the entrance, at times in chest-high water. Now, in a passage that was high enough for them to walk upright, Jason saw something flicker in the distance. “Lights! I see lights!” Jason shouted out. For the first time since entering the cave, over 20 hours earlier, Jason's emotions got the best of him and tears trickled down his cheeks.

But Cathy soon realized that these were real$100 bills.

Luckily for Cathy, the book also contained the name of the book owner.

Grady and his family went camping every summer. As it was becoming hotter, here came the camping time.
Having planned the camp long, the family finally decided the destination. With necessities loaded onto the car, the family squeezed into the car. The car door closed, heat was shut outside.
In the car, Jared, Grady's younger brother was playing with a toy dinosaur, making great noise. Grady's mother talked excitedly with his father. On settling in the car, Grady put on the earphones and listened to music. After what seemed to be hours, the car stopped where they headed. Grady threw down his backpack and slammed the car door.
“This will be a lengthy week,” he said unhappily to no one in particular. He looked around the campground. Hundreds of tall and green fir trees, some as tall as church towers, covered the mountainside like a green carpet. The sun would be setting soon. Grady thought maybe the heat wouldn't be unbearable. But actually now in the mountain, the hot stickiness of July was closely attached to him.
Grady hated camping, but it was something his family stuck to every summer. His father liked cooking in the open air, telling stories about how to survive things like bear attacks and bites of bees. His mother and Jared liked to hike and take pictures of animals. Jared had a collection of bug pictures that he had pinned to the walls in his half of their room. Grady thought they were just scary and proof that Jared was a strange kid.
They set up camp—two tents, one for his parents and one for him and Jared. While everyone else started preparing dinner, Grady, looking for some place to cool down, set off for the nearby stream, which was deep enough to swim in.

Though it is one of the faded memories of my life today, there are times when I remember his face clearly, especially his eyes. As he had yellow spots on his eyes, we called him Spotty. He would have been a stray(走失的)dog, until he came to me.
I was seven years old. My dad had just got a new job in Nasik. We had moved into a rented house. It was raining very heavily on the day we moved.
It was a cold dark night. We had our meal and went to sleep. Somehow in the middle of the night I heard some strange sounds outside the main door. I gathered courage and looked out through the window and I was really amused with what I saw outside.
There was a small puppy lying on an old doormat which my mother had put outside the door. It was wet and trembling. At first it was difficult to see the little one. It was the yellow spots on its eyes that made me realize its presence.
It was trying to get under the doormat to avoid the cold air outside and it had managed to get in as I could see only its head outside the doormat. Was it sick or injured
I felt pity for the poor soul. I went in and came out with an old towel. I went near the innocent one and held it in my hand and wiped the puppy till he had become dry. I took him into my room and made a bed for him with a woolen blanket and a small pillow. He seemed very healthy and comfortable in his new bed as he went to sleep immediately.
The next morning, everyone in the family came to know about the unusual guest.“Shall we keep him with us ”I questioned my mom.
Like any other parents would, my parents first totally refused my idea but my sister and I convinced them to keep Spotty.
Slowly Spotty got on with everyone and became one of the family members.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
One day, Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg.

Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly.
