The Circus
Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. My family weren’t well off at that time, we can only come to see it once a year. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly discussing about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You’re my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling in pride, looking back at her as if to reply, “You got that right.”
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady quoted the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lip began to quiver (颤抖). The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say ”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. That price immediately threw him into low spirits.

It was an ordinary but unforgettable Saturday, and everything was nice and peaceful. The wind, soft but a little cool, clicked through tree branches and stirred the bushes. I was walking along the river, which is rushing and sparkling between green banks, and enjoying some hot chocolate with the sun shining down on me on this nice spring day. I was in the mood to do something nice for a stranger and started to look around for an opportunity to do a random act of kindness.
Two minutes later I was approached from across the pathway by a complete stranger. I wasn’t sure why he was approaching me, when from out of nowhere he started talking to me really rudely. I could tell he was probably drunk or high or who-knows-what, so I just stayed calm and kept walking ahead. There were hundreds of people sitting on benches nearby and walking along the South Bank with me, so I wasn’t really worried.
However, as I tried to walk along, he kept saying offensive things to me and trying to get my attention. I tried to change my course and he kept following me, coming closer each time, and just wouldn’t leave me alone. At one point, he literally cornered me near the rail next to the river at which point I got really scared and didn’t know what to do. Although there were people everywhere, I got worried that the bystander effect might kick in and nobody would do anything about what they were seeing. I was praying that one of the many people sitting on benches nearby who could hear everything and watched this whole episode unfold would be courageous enough to help me out of this situation. “What should I do What should I do ” I was nearly sobbing.

Joan excitedly packed her bags for her upcoming trip with her family. They were going to drive from New York to Virginia to visit relatives. She could not wait. She had missed playing with her cousins and talking to her aunt and uncle.
After all of the suitcases had been loaded into the car, Joan’s dad looked to Joan and her mother. “Is everyone ready for our road trip ” They both grinned (露齿而笑) and nodded.
It was going to be quite a long journey, and within a couple of hours Joan had already begun to feel tired. She began to nod off when she noticed that the car began to veer (突然变向) to the side of the road.
Joan’s father got out and walked around the car. He scratched his head, looking confused. Then, he gave a great sigh. He poked his head through the passenger side window. “We have a flat tire,” he said to Joan’s mom.
“Use the spare tire in the trunk. Then we can replace it when we reach Virginia,” she suggested. Joan’s father looked down at his feet sheepishly (羞怯地). “I ... haven’t had the spare tire replaced since the last time we had a flat.”
Her mother seemed frustrated (沮丧), but tried to remain positive. “Maybe we can call a service,” she suggested.
But a quick glance at their cellphones told them that there was no reception in the area. Joan looked at her mother in the front seat, and her father still staring blankly (茫然地) at the flat tire outside. Both of them looked concerned.
Joan began to get worried. No other cars had passed by in a while and it seemed like they were far away from a town center.
Joan looked out the window, wondering if they would have to sleep in the car or if there was any way they could possibly find someone to help them. Would they ever make their way to Virginia Her relatives would surely be worried about them.

I was walking on the shore when I suddenly heard someone crying. It just drew my attention and I began to look around. Suddenly I saw a little child sitting on a rock who was crying. It was around twelve at night. “Why is he here Why is he crying ” I wondered. And above all I couldn’ t see anyone around him, for he was too small to be alone. I approached him, initially he was frightened but I calmed him down and gave him a chocolate to eat. From the way he ate the chocolate I could make this out that he was very hungry.
I felt pity on him, who was a little boy around seven years old. His clothes were all torn. Now he was quite comfortable with me and I asked why he was crying. He told me to look at those waves in the sea and asked how I felt about them. I said they were beautiful. But he made an angry face and said he hated them, because these waves took his parents away. He was just five and since then he started wandering in this unknown city. No one loved him. These words “No one loved him” just took me into a flashback.
I suddenly recollected the dark memories of my life. I recalled that I was an orphan (孤儿) and how a couple adopted me when I was four years old. They did a lot for me, because of them today I am the engineer of the biggest shipping company. They were in a sense my true parents but I was so unfortunate that I lost them in an accident nearly three years ago. I remembered how I always wanted to thank them for what all they did for me but I couldn’t. I felt like this lttle boy was at the same situation like mine when I was a four-year old little kid.

Throughout life, we come across many people who impact us in a way. Their impact can be for a day or for a lifetime. It’s common not to recognize the impact someone has left on you until a certain moment. The person who left a great impact on me is my dad.
Three months after turning fourteen, my life was great. I was getting settled into a high school; my grades were already starting off greatly and I was making friends.
One day as I came home from school, I walked into the living room, finding my mom and dad talking. My parents turned to me and told me to sit down because there was something important they had to tell me. I soon found out that my dad’s liver was failing and he needed an immediate transplant. I was shocked and confused because my dad seemed fine. He was working and never looked sick. My parents told me not to worry because everything would be fine. Four months had passed and my dad still had not received a new liver ; he was progressively getting worse. His body seemed to be getting weaker, but he constantly said he was fine.
It was getting hard for my family and me. My dad had to quit his job leaving my mom to be the only provider. I had to take on the responsibility of cleaning the house, cooking meals and checking on my dad while my mom was at work. I had to cut back on hanging with my friends because my dad was beginning to go in and out of the hospital. My focus for school was starting to slip. So were my grades. Two nights before my school spring break, my mom received a call from the hospital that my dad had been in a car accident and that he was in hospital. Surprisingly, my dad hadn’t received a scratch on him. Then next night my mom received a call from the doctor stating that there was a liver that matched my dad’s body and that he needed to get to the hospital immediately.

David Ballesteros looked at the lawyer. He couldn’t believe his ears. The lawyer told him that his father left the 1923 Singer sewing machine (缝纫机) to him. It once belonged to his great-grandmother and his father considered it his greatest treasure.“That’s very nice,”David said.“But what else What about the legacy (遗产) The money What does it all amount to ”
The lawyer, Mr. Jarvin, put down the will. He felt sorry for David but he thought David’s father had explained the terms of the will before he died. David remembered that his father just told him he’d be passing on his riches, but he never specified the amount — that was what he was trying to find out!
Mr. Jarvin said carefully,“David, no money at all.”“That’s impossible!” David screamed. His father owned clothing factories all over the United States. He was rich! Mr. Jarvin explained that all the money was donated to charity under the terms of his father’s will.
David was reeling (晕头转向) from the shock. He’d lived a life of wealth and now he was left with nothing but an old sewing machine! Mr. Jarvin said to David that his father left him a letter which may explain his decision. David grabbed the envelope. His father’s decision was to leave him a poor man! What kind of explanation could he possibly have for that! He drove back to his apartment just in time to see a van (厢式送货车) pull up.
“Mr. David Ballesteros ”asked the man from the van.“Yes,” David said.“We have a delivery for you, sir.”He gestured to the old sewing machine.“Where would you like it ”David was about to scream“In the trash (垃圾桶)!”but it occurred to him that the old item might be worth some money, so he ordered the man to take it up to his apartment. After the man left, David poured himself a drink and looked at the sewing machine.“I have an MBA.I’m prepared to run companies. What am I supposed to do with a sewing machine, Dad ”he asked aloud.

It was February 16, 2019, at 8 a. m. when my girlfriend, Jessika, and I arrived at Utah’s Zion National Park. We’d traveled from our home in Mesa, Arizona, to hike the nine-mile-long Subway Trail, so named because of its amazing tunnel-shaped canyon (峡谷). Halfway through our hike, which included climbing over rocks and walking across streams, the sunshine gave way to a light snow. Soon after, we reached the red-colored walls of the Subway Trail. A small pond stood in our way, with the trail (路线) continuing on the other side. Because the pond looked shallow, we began to wade (蹚水) through, with Jessika leading the way.
About five feet from the edge, her front foot sank into the sandy bottom. Then she fell forward and both legs started to sink. I dashed to her, grabbed her under the shoulders, and pulled her out. She climbed back to shore. But now I was sinking. The mud came all the way up to my right thigh and my left calf (小腿肚). I freed my left leg but couldn’t move my right.
Jess handed me a long stick we’d picked up earlier in the hike. I put it down the side of my leg and tried to move and pull it out. Nothing. I was trapped in quicksand (流沙) .
Jessika started scooping (舀) sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. “Don’t bother,” I told her. “You’re just wasting your energy.” While I was no longer sinking, I wasn’t getting out, either.
We couldn’t call for help because the closest rescue team was back at the trailhead, five hours away from us. I told Jessika she had to hike back and call for help. She was scared-she had only ever hiked with me and was fearful of hiking alone on a trail the National Park Service calls “very tough.” But we were out of options.

Two things changed my life: my mother and a white plastic bike basket. I have thought long and hard about it and it’s true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn’t turned a silly bicycle accessory(配件) into a life lesson I carry with me today.
We had to earn our allowance by doing chores around the house. I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. Like the two little girls growing up at the White House, we made our own beds (no one left the house until that was done) and picked up after ourselves. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not replaced.
It was summer and, one day, my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed — and there it was in the window. White, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers, the basket winked at me and I knew — I knew — I had to have it.
“It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her. “What a neat basket.”
I tried to hold off at first. I played it cool for a short while. But then I guess I couldn’t stand it any longer: “Mom, please can I please, please get it I’ll do extra chores for as long as you say. I’ll do anything, but I need that basket. I love that basket. Please, Mom. Please ”
I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever, “If you save up you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I make enough it’ll be gone!”
“Maybe Roger here could hold it for you,” she smiled at Roger, the bike guy.
“He can’t hold it for that long, Mom. Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please ”
“There might be another way,” she said.

Before I turned 10, I lost my parents. My siblings(兄弟姐妹) left Hyderabad after relatives adopted them, but I insisted on staying back to continue my education. I lived alone in a room that a family member allowed me to use rent-free. To support myself, I began to deliver newspapers.
I would be up every morning by 5 am and walk five kilometers to the newspaper office. By 6 am, I would collect 50copies of Manzil (Urdu Daily)-the bundle(一捆)must have weighed over 5 kilograms. My beat (工作区域)spanned(跨越)3kilometers. After distributing(分发)the copies, I would rush home-another 3 kilometers-quickly eat and be off to high school.
On a cold winter morning, I got home after my deliveries to find a boy of my age at my doorstep. He introduced himself as Afzal and said his father wanted to see me.
I was greeted at the door by Afzal’s mother, Naseem. She served tea and snacks as Afzal’s father, Mr. Kader, joined us. She gently asked me about my daily routine. I told her about my morning job.
Later,as I was about to leave after thanking them, Mr. Kader asked me to wait. Naseem asked me,”How many miles do you walk every day ”
“A little more than six.” I replied. My reply shocked her.
“That’s too much! You must be really tired every day.” Naseem looked at me with misty eyes.
“I have been used to that.” I said, managing a smile.
A little while later, I saw Mr. Kader emerge again, wheeling(推)a new bicycle. It was a Hercules, quite expensive in pre-Independence India. If only I had such a bicycle!

My wife and I went to the Animal Emergency Hospital on a Good Friday last year. We ended up there with Jack, a beautiful dog.Any pet that is there on a Good Friday is in bad trouble as most vets(兽医诊所) are closed .
Jack was seriously ill and they helped him. Before we left we said we were not rich but we wanted to do an act of kindness and gave $1,500 for someone they thought really needed the help.
Within 18 hours the money ended up helping a single mother whose dog had been bitten(咬) by a snake. She had at least one child with serious illness, so the decision had to be made to help the child with the treatment the mother had booked,or to help the dog. We were able to help the dog so she could support her family. The hospital gave her my phone number and I received a heartfelt message from a stranger saying thank you. The vets also said it restored their faith in humanity and good people, which was nice.
Sadly I lost my best friend Jack almost 2 months ago. He was such a beautiful dog that I feel honored to share my life with him.
A few days later,I went again in the morning to the Animal Emergency Hospital and gave $1,500—something intended for my beautiful dog Jack. And we are still not rich, but acts of kindness are important. The fact is that emergency vets are not cheap for ordinary pet owners.I hope the money can help someone who finds themselves in a terrible situation tomorrow and it helps their family stay together.I talked with some pet owners there and they said that sometimes they really couldn’t afford treatment for their pets.I realized that I should do more then.

My best friend Carla Hernandez called me on Thursday afternoon. She asked me to meet her in the park near the playground five minutes later. She said she had a great idea! This worried me because Carla’s great ideas almost always meant big trouble for me!
I rushed outside and jogged to the park. When I saw Carla, my heart sank because her huge dog Perro was with her. I liked everything about Carla except Perro. I’d never had a pet, so I felt uncomfortable and nervous around animals. I was embarrassed to say that I was afraid of Carla’s dog. Carla smiled. “Isn’t this the perfect location for a pet show ” she asked. “All the kids in the neighborhood can show off their pets’ talents and demonstrate the things they do well. There are plenty of comfortable benches (长椅) for our parents and friends to sit on. And since you don’t have a pet to enter into the show, you will be the announcer.”
“I’m sorry,” I apologized, “but that’s impossible! Crowds made me nervous and unsure. Besides, I didn’t like animals, remember ” “That’s nonsense,” said Carla. “There’s nothing to be concerned about because you’ll be great!” Carla encouraged me to be brave and confident. But just then, Perro leaped up, slobbered all over (毫不掩饰地表示喜爱) me, and almost knock me down. “Down, Perro! Stay!” I shouted. Perro sat as still as a statue. “Wow, you’re good at that,” said Carla. She thought I was talented at giving orders to pets, and asked me to get started with her immediately because we would have a lot to do.
By Saturday morning I had practiced announcing each pet’s act a hundred times. I felt my heart pounding by the time the audience arrived. The size of the crowd made me feel even more anxious. When the show began, I announced the first pet, nervously. It was a bird named Butter whose talent was walking back and forth on a wire. When Butter finished, everyone clapped and cheered. So far, everything was perfect.

People think being a delivery person is easy, but it’s more complex than anyone can imagine. Although Harry always did his best, he was not able to afford a car. He used his motorbike to deliver orders and usually it was convenient except for severe weather conditions.
One day, he was trying to get off the highway when he saw an old beggar trying to cross the road. He was weak and looked cold in his dirty jacket. The honks (鸣笛) of cars echoed as they passed him, and the man backed away with fear. If that kept going, someone would run over the man, so Harry stopped to help him cross.
Harry grabbed the man’s arm to guide him and started leading him through it. Luckily, they reached the other side after a few minutes, and the old beggar smiled brightly at him. “Thank you so much, young man. I can’t believe I finally crossed. Can you tell me your address I want to send a thank-you gift.” the older man said, reaching for Harry.
“Oh, that’s not necessary.” Harry said and straightened his motorbike to get back on it. “Please. I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t repay this kind gesture,” he insisted, and Harry nodded, telling him his address. Still, he didn’t expect anything from this poor older man. “Thank you again!” the senior beggar waved as Harry rolled away to continue working.
Harry lived in a nice neighborhood but because the pandemic cost him his job, and now food delivery was his entire livelihood. Some days he had to work 18 hours to make ends meet. He was his children’s only parent because his wife had abandoned them long ago, and Harry was determined to build a promising future for them, even if he didn’t have a car to make those deliveries properly. He was saving for that.

It was in the 1930s, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC.My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake, five years ago.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because the bottom parts were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have “French toast” ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those times. Rent was 25 dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be evicted right after Christmas on the first of January.
Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund from social services. The inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn’t find any, he issued the cheque to Mum.
Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the 25 dollars to pay back rent, assuring all of us a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas tree, cleaning snow, and doing part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. Boots that weren’t patched, boots with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of 23 dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was excited, as I hurried up the road to the shoe store, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for Christmas meals. I knew that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.

On June 4th, my family and I decided to go white-water rafting(激浪漂流) down the Nantahala River in Western North Carolina. It was a perfect day to be out on the water. My father thought that we could all deal with a new situation, so he decided to bring us to go without a guide at this new, hard course. My mom and I were upset by my dad’s decision, but my brother was pleased with it. So, we had to agree with them. We got life jackets, our raft and paddles that were used to row it, and then took a bus to the drop point where we carried the raft to the icy cold water. Having finished the training, we were on our own white-water rafting.
Within the first hour, we got stuck on two rocks. Another raft had to hit ours to get us off the rocks. After about two hours, we saw a huge rock on the right side of the river. It was coming out of the water about ten feet high and about fifteen feet wide. Somehow, we ended up on top of this rock. After about a minute, water started rushing in where my brother was sitting. When he started falling into the water, I tried to pull him back. Unfortunately, we fell off together. My mother jumped in after us, but she could only get to my brother because he was closer than I was. My dad jumped out and ran up the bank of the river to get to the road, so he could see where I was. I was picked up after about two minutes by a stranger in another raft and was heading down the river toward a little resting spot.

When Ms. Chow announced the coming “Battle of the Books”, we were so excited. She said, “You’re going to be in teams of three, and you’ll need to set a reading goal for your team. Every team that meets their goal by the end of the month will get a prize!”
That sounded pretty good to me. Wyatt turned to me, saying, “Teammates ”
“Oh, sure!” I said. Wyatt and I liked a lot of the same books, so we could set a goal like reading every graphic novel (漫画小说) in a series.
The lunch bell sounded before Ms. Chow could explain any more rules. Liya came to our desk and said “Teammates ” to Wyatt and me.
“Yeah, teammates!” Wyatt and I answered happily. Liya could read super-fast in both Hindi and English. If we set a goal like reading books by authors from different countries, she could help the team for sure.
Over lunch, we discussed what we needed to do for the contest (竞赛) when Kash came to us.“Do you have ideas for us ”I asked him.
Kash said, “Why would I give you guys ideas I’ll save them for my team. ”
“Kash, come on, ”I said. “It’s teams of three. Wyatt and Liya said something to me first. If you had, then it would be different. ”
“I see how I rank (属于某等级) in the friendship lineup, ”Kash said angrily, and left.
We were very surprised, but we understood him. The four of us always did things together. I felt the only way to fix this was to allow four people on a team.
So, in the afternoon we went to see Ms. Chow. Guess what She told us she was going to draw names to assign random groups (随机分配组).
As we walked out of the office, we became silent. We knew even if Ms. Chow had let us form a four-person group, Kash knew we had first teamed up without him. We knew we wouldn’t be able to enjoy any prize if one of our best friends felt bad about being left out. What could we do to clear up this misunderstanding

I’ll never forget that hot and windy day when I passed my driving test. The instructor just told me that I passed and he was talking to me about my test as I was full of smiles. I looked over at my dad and he was staring at(盯着) his phone with a strange look. And then the instructor and I went on with our own business.
“Excuse me sir, but I must take this call …” my father rudely cut in. I was so embarrassed because there were signs all over the DMV (车管局) office that read: CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF. He opened his phone and said, “Hello ” The look on his face was unforgettable as he turned so white. I knew something was wrong. My first thought was that someone was in the hospital or had died. Although no one had died, little did I know that the phone call was going to change my life forever.
The call was from the North Middleton Fire Department and they told my father that he needed to get to the house as soon as possible. My dad was about to shut his phone when suddenly I heard my old sister on the phone. All I could hear was her crying crazily and shouting “Fire”! I had one thought going through my head at that moment, and it was her son, Tom.
Did my sister get him out of the house in time He was only six months old and I loved him more than anything in the world. We ran out of the DMV office both in complete shock. My dad was driving anxiously and quickly. At this point I didn’t even know how to prepare myself. The thought of my house burning to the ground didn’t seem to be real. I kept telling my dad it probably wasn’t even that bad and to stop driving like a crazy man.
The drive from the DMV office to my house is only a fifteen-minute drive, but it felt like forever. Finally, we were half a mile away from the house.

I was eight the first time I played checkers. I’ve played about a thousand games since then, but none was so memorable as that first one.
It was icy January in Kansas. When the snowstorm hit, cutting off our power, we were thrown into darkness though it was still around noon. No heat, no light. The winter became terrible for everyone-especially for me and my six year old brother.
Methodically Grandpa gathered up his winter coat, scarf and gloves, and disappeared into snow. Several minutes later, he returned, carrying much wood. Glancing casually at my brother and me, he said, “Come on boys. Time to build a fire. ”
But the fire wasn’t enough to sustain the attention of two young boys. “Maybe,” Grandpa remarked, carefully considering the situation. “we could do something I used to do as a boy. Let’s go camping.”
My brothers and I looked at each other in amazement.
”Get your sleeping bags, pillows and stuffed animals, and meet me back here.“
It took us only minutes to gather our sleeping gear. When we returned Grandpa had rearranged the furniture, clearing an open space in front of the fire. in short order, we had a fine campground.
“Now then” Grandpa began, unfolding a strange looking game board, “who’s up for a little game of checkers ” “What are checkers ” my brother and I asked.
“Never played, eh Well. it’s time you boys learned,” Grandpa said.
For the next hour or so. Grandpa coached us on the fine art of playing checkers. I became a fair player after losing four games in a row. Then I defeated Grandpa. When I asked him if he’d let me win, he merely winked (眨眼 and set the board up for the next game Afterward. Grandpa used his old guitar to sing us some campfire songs to which we sing along.
Then suddenly, the power came back on. Mom and Dad gave a cheer, but for my brother and me, it was the end of a grand adventure. This wasn’t how we wanted the night to end.

Sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high-school athletes in our town of Verden. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ basketball team. But I was. At just five feet, one inch tall, our daughter’s lack of height wasn’t my worry. She has Down syndrome (唐氏综合症).
My wife and I never told Lauren that she was different. We treated her like our other children. We didn’t want her to feel disabled or different because she had Down syndrome.
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren ran to meet me when I came in from work. She flew into my arms and lingered long in my embrace. Unlike some sixteen-year-olds, Lauren was outwardly affectionate (亲切的).
“That’s nice, honey,” I replied automatically, and patted her shoulder. Walking into the kitchen, I kissed my wife Laura on the cheek. Laura spoke slowly, her tone steady. “What Lauren’s trying to tell you is that she’s joining the girls’ high-school basketball team.”
Just as my wife’s words sunk in, I heard Lauren behind me.
“I’m gonna be a Lady Tiger,” she whooped, skipping into the room and throwing her arms in the air. She raced out of the kitchen to one of her favorite activities, watching cartoons on television. Everything that could happen flashed through my mind. What should we do Parenting seldom had clear-cut answers, and bringing up a child with a disability was an additional challenge.
Mid-November, the season’s first basketball game arrived. I settled into a seat on the second row with the rest of my family. Before the game, cheerleaders (啦啦队) were running on the court, dancing and jumping. The game got off to a good start, but soon Verden was behind. Even after a rally (反弹) in the second half, I knew the Lady Tigers were certain to lose. Just less than two minutes were left, and Verden was down by seventeen points. Coach called a time-out. The announcer’s voice echoed over the public-address system. “Number thirty-three, Lauren Wray, in for the Lady Tigers.” My heart pounding, I watched wide-eyed. Lauren was in the game.

It was Sunday. I had one last patient to see.
I approached her room in a hurry and stood at the doorway. She was an older woman, sitting on the edge of the bed, struggling to put socks on her swollen feet.
I crossed the threshold(门口), spoke quickly to the nurse, and scanned her chart, noting she was in stable condition. I was almost in the clear.
I leaned on the bed rail looking down at her. She asked if I could help put on her socks. I thought I had other priorities on the list. It’s my responsibility to arrange the issue. So instead, I launched into a monologue(独白)that went something like this: “How are you feeling Your sugars and blood pressure were high but they’re better today. The nurse mentioned you’re anxious to see your son who’s visiting you today. It’s nice to have family visit from far away. I bet you really look forward to seeing him.”
She stopped me in a serious, authoritative voice. “Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story.”
I was surprised and embarrassed. I sat down. I helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her only son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him in five years. She believed that the stress of this contributed greatly to her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, I asked if there was anything else I could do for her. She shook her head no and smiled. All she wanted me to do was to listen.
And, not long after, in an unexpected twist, I became the patient, with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis at age 31. Now, 20 years later, I sit all the time --- in a wheelchair. For as long as I could, I continued to see patients from my chair.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her desk mate,Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group.Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”.Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti”.But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner,it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it ”She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act.’“They have a pecking(啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead.“If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”

参考答案:
1. How was he supposed to turn and tell his family that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus The eight children had no idea of what happened, they stared at the father, with their eyes shining with expectation. His face turned pale and stood there tongue-tied. Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.
My father reached down, picked up the bill, tapped the man and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man knew what was going on. He certainly appreciated the help in a desperate, heartbreaking, embarrassing situation. He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip quivering and a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.” My father and I went back to our car and drove home. We didn’t go to the circus that night, but we didn’t go without.
