第一节 (满分25分)
One Possible Version:
Dear schoolmates,
Recently, I took part in an activity called “No Plastic in Nature” initiated by WWF, aiming to reduce the use of plastic products.
As we all know, plastic products are widely used from households, hospitals to super markets, factories and so on. Useful as plastic products are, overusing and improper treatment do great harm to our lives, which results in a great waste of resources and heavy environment pollution. Even worse, they are likely to pose a threat to public health.
Therefore, I call on every one of you to participate in this activity and do your part to protect our homeland.

It was a fine bridge stretching from one side of the stream to the other! To his surprise, his younger brother was coming to meet him with a big smile and arms wide open to hug him. “You are really kind and humble, my brother! After all I had done and said to you, you still shown that blood relations can never be broken! I am truly sorry for my behavior”, the younger brother said as he hugged his elder brother. They turned to see the carpenter and thanked him gratefully.

(Text 1)
W: I thought the bus leaves every 15 minutes.
M: It usually does, but this is the holiday schedule.
W: I completely forgot. I hope we won’t be late for the game.
(Text 2)
M: Hello, room service I ordered breakfast over half an hour ago.
W: I’m sorry, sir, but the kitchen has been very busy this morning. We’ll have your breakfast up to your room immediately.
M: Please hurry. We have to check out soon because we’re going to catch our plane.
(Text 3)
M: We can’t wait all day.
W: It’s only been a half-hour. Let’s just wait for another half-hour.
M: I’ll wait ten more minutes, but then I’m leaving.
(Text 4)
W: When is a good time to go to Silver Lake
M: Well, August or September is so hot. I think the most popular time to go is October. But we can’t get away till November this year. So we’ve made our plans for then.
(Text 5)
W: I’m doing a survey to determine how heavily the nearby roads are being used. Could you tell me how many people are employed here
M: At least three hundred.
(Text 6)
M: You go in your car. I know where the hotel is, so you can follow me.
W: OK, but don’t drive too fast. I don’t want to lose you on the road.
M: Don’t worry. I’ll drive really slowly so you won’t get lost. There’s no parking at the restaurant, so you should try to park in front of the bank. You can usually find a space there.
W: I don’t want to park on the street. Isn’t there a garage at the hotel
M: Yes, there is, but there’s a charge for parking there, and I’m sure it isn’t cheap.
(Text 7)
W: Excuse me. I’m new in town and I’m looking for somewhere to eat. Where is the nearest café
M: Let me see. So we’re on Union Street. Just walk up until you come to Naples Street. Then take a right. There’s a café on your left. I often have lunch there.
W: Great! How about a music store I want to look at CDs and DVDs.
M: Sure. You go down Union for about three blocks and take a right at Webb Street. Go down Webb for another block and there’s a music store on your right. I hear it’s good, but I’ve never been there.
W: Fantastic. Just one more thing. My shoes are killing me. How can I get to a good shoe store
M: I think there’s one near here, but I’ve never been to it. Go up Webb for two blocks and turn right on Green Street. There’s a shoe store on your right.
W: Great. Thanks a lot.
(Text 8)
W: Hey, John. Where do you keep the mailbox keys I’ve looked everywhere, but I just found the car keys and the house keys.
M: Oh, I took them and got the post.
W: Anything interesting
M: A few bills and … oh … a leaflet on recycling.
W: What does it say
M: Recycling information … The city is introducing a recycling program to protect the environment. Please use the black bin for all recyclable waste.
W: Oh, they must mean that bin we got a couple of weeks ago.
M: Yes. It says the collection for North Park is on Mondays.
W: What about Mum
M: Let’s look. South Park is on Thursdays.
W: So what do we put in it
M: It says here “newspapers, magazines, white paper and cans. No plastic bags or paint cans”. Oh, and glass is different. Glass is on Tuesdays. But we have to take the broken glass to the recycling center ourselves.
(Text 9)
M: The Maldon Mud Race takes place each year and around 250 people run and walk through 400m of mud to raise money for charity. So they look very wet and dirty. I’m sure the most important thing is taking an old T-shirt or a pair of old trousers. What do you think
W: I think we need shorts. We can’t move easily when we get wet with long trousers.
M: Hmm, I think you’re right. I imagine any clothes we wear will get really heavy with all that mud on them. Do you think it’s easier with trainers on, or without
W: With.
M: Really I was thinking that there might be some places where we need to swim, and it’s always really hard swimming with shoes on. Why do you think it’s easier with shoes on
W: I go running, and it can hurt when you stand on a stone.
M: Good argument. What do you think about swimming costume
W: We don’t need it because we have the shorts and T-shirt.
M: Hmm, I think you’re right.
(Text 10) W
Thank you, Ms. Johnson, for your very useful report. It covered the topic in detail. I know many of you have questions for Ms. Johnson, but it’s about 10:30 now, and we still have several points to cover before we break for lunch. So, before we continue with the next part of our board meeting and the question-and-answer period, why don’t we take a short coffee break Coffee and tea and fruit and sandwiches are available in the Yellow River Room. We’ll start again in twenty minutes, and following a 10-minute question and answer period with Ms. Johnson, we’ll hear Mr. Kim’s report on the Harbor Project. Instead of in the Blue Sky Room here, Mr. Kim will begin his presentation in the Green Mountain Room, because he has a slide show to go along with his report, so it should be quite interesting.参照秘密级管理★启用前

It was Jennifer Williams' mother who got her glued to books. A librarian, she read to her three children every day. “Not until we went to kindergarten, ”Williams said. “Until we went to college. ”
When Williams, now 54, became an elementary school teacher in Danville, Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had limited access to books.
“Kids who are read to perform much better than those who are not, ” she said. “It's obvious at the end of the first day of schoo1. ” To Williams, the solution was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, as part of an event called Engage Danville, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that.
She said, “I wanted to do something. ”
So she set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number. However, Williams posted on Facebook: “Don't complain in the bleachers (看台)if you aren't willing to work hard out on the field. " She got to work, first by persuading friends to donate(捐赠)books or money to buy books. Soon, as news of Williams' project spread, strangers started putting books in front of her door. As quickly as the books came in, Williams gave them to local schools free of charge. She also hosted a book club for prisoners in the local jail.
In the four years, Williams has given away more than 78, 000 books-only 922, 000 more to reach her goal! And she's not slowing down. “Reading can take you anywhere, ” she said. “You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything. ”
24. What is the purpose of Williams' donation
A. To enable more children to read books.
B. To raise kids' awareness of buying books.
C. To encourage teachers to read books to kids.
D. To give prisoners books free of charge.
25. Why did Williams post on Facebook
A. She could make more friends.
B. She wanted to seek more help.
C. She was tired of the complaining.
D. She needed to buy books online.
26. Which words best describe Jennifer Williams
A. Kind but stubborn.
B. Generous but impatient.
C. Independent and active.

Optical(光学的)fiber is a flexible line of glass capable of carrying information over long distances. Scientists Dr. Robert Maurer, Dr. Peter Schultz, and Dr. Donald Keck invented the first low-loss optical fiber in 1970. Inspired by their belief that information could be sent through light, they spent four years experimenting with different kinds of glass until they succeeded.
Optical fiber was an answer to consumer demand for increased bandwidth (带宽). Beginning in the 1960s, the telecommunications industry realized that the existing copper wire infrastructure (基础设施)could no longer keep up as communications traffic increased. Optical fiber changed the telecommunications industry greatly because it, unlike copper, offered limitless bandwidth. Because of those qualities, optical fiber has become the backbone of the networks that we use today to send voice, data, and video around the world.
The first optical fiber was celebrated for having a total attenuation of 17dB/km. Today, there are optical fibers with attenuation as low as 0. 17dB/km, which translates to signal loss being 100 times better than the first one. As a result, optical fiber is the preferred medium for fast, reliable communications networks.
Today, optical fiber provides the infrastructure for broadband connectivity all around the world. Optical fiber supports all the communications and interactive technology we use every day. Because of the global fiber network, you have instant access to voice, information, and video through devices such as smartphones, computers, high-definition TV, GPS, and game systems through which you get directions, send email, conduct research, join social networks, shop, and download music, movies, and more.
As has been the case from the very beginning, one driver that shapes the future of optical fiberis market demand. Optical fiber continues to create new opportunities in how we live, work, and play. Innovations such as Cloud Computing will enable us to partner with technology in a way never before possible.
28. What drives the scientists to invent the optical fiber
A. No enough copper.
B. Better understanding of light.
C. Invention of glass.
D. Need for faster information sending.
29. What does the underlined word “attenuation” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Signal.
B. Loss.
C. Power.
D. Metal.
30. What can we learn about the optical fiber in paragraph 4
A. It has limited usage.
B. It needs more devices.
C. It offers better resources.
D. It benefits life and technology.
31. Which word can be used to describe the future of optical fiber
A. Promising.
B. Demanding.
C. Uncertain.
D. Unthinkable.

Opinions differ on the question of whether it is better to live in the city or in the countryside. However, due to the rapid upward trend in house prices in cities, people are increasingly choosing to move to a rural(乡村的)area. Reason enough to take a closer look at the arguments for living in the city and in the country.
Living in the city continues to be extremely popular. The proportion of the population living in rural areas has been falling continuously since the middle of the 19th century which was marked by industrialization (工业化). More and more people moved to the cities to find work.
Infrastructure is one of the biggest advantages of cities. A well-developed network of public transportation often makes that a car is not absolutely necessary. In the countryside, on the other hand, you almost always need a car to be flexible(灵活的). Related to infrastructure, mobility is also an argument for living in the city. Very often, rural regions are not or only connected to the rail network and also do not have an adequate bus system. In the cities, there is a wide range of entertaining options, from cultural opportunities and other clubs. The latter, however, are increasingly found in the countryside as well. In addition, rural areas offer many options for outdoor activities.
The expansion of digital networks is still in its beginnings in some rural regions. Here, the city clearly has the better offer. However, this is set to change, and various research projects and plans to expand digital networks are intended to promote the connection of rural residential areas.
32. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To introduce the main topic.
B. To raise readers' interest.
C. To put forward a reason.
D. To present different opinions.
33. What resulted in the growth of the population in cities
A. Colorful outdoor activities.
B. Low housing prices.
C. More job opportunities.
D. Strong cultural atmosphere.
34. What is the author's attitude towards life in the countryside
A. Uncaring.
B. Optimistic.
C. Doubtful.
D. Grateful.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. The means of transportation in the city.
B. The similarities between different cultures.
C. The advantages of living in the countryside.
D. The different views on living in the city or the rural area.

High school is a busy time, but it doesn't have to be unbearable! Our guide will help you improve your time management so you can stay on top of your school work and feel more in control over your schedule.
Make the most of your class time. Sit in front of the class. 36 It will also send a signal to your teacher that you are engaged in the class.
Not every high school has flexible seating. However, take advantage of the opportunity to sit in front if you have it. If you've been assigned a seat in the back row, respectfully ask your teachers for a seat closer to the front. 37

You can begin with brainstorming some long-term goals. When you understand what your long-term goals are, you can determine how best to make the most of your time in high school to accomplish those goals. Write down a list of things you may be interested in doing, then read and research what careers in those fields involve. 39 For example, you may want to become a computer programmer when you grow up. To that end, you may want t sign up for a computer programming course.
Set short-term goals by learning how to achieve your long-term goals. Research the steps it takes to achieve your long-term goals by talking to professionals who have achieved those goals and searching the Internet for information. 40 Make your short-term goals with both high school and college in mind. Make sure that your grades and extracurriculars match the undergraduate,vocationa1(职业的),or other post high school programs you intend to apply for.

The Bridge
Once upon a time two brothers who lived on neighboring farms fell into conflict (冲突). It was the first serious quarrel in 40 years of farming side by side. They had been sharing machinery, trading a labor and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long partnership fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference which exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.
One morning there was a knock on elder brother's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s (木匠) toolbox. “I am looking for a few days of work”, he said. “Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you ”
“Yes!” said the elder brother. “I do have a job for you. Look across the stream at that farm. That's my neighbor, in fact, it's my younger brother and we don't get along. Last week he dug a wider passage for water into his farm. But he ended up creating a very wide stream in between our farms and I am sure he did it just to annoy me. I want you to build me something so that we don't have to stand and see each other's face from across. ”
The carpenter said “I think I understand the situation. I will be able to do a job that will please you. ”The elder brother had to go to town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing. At sunset, he had just finished his job.
When the elder brother returned, his eyes opened wide and his jaw dropped after seeing the work.
