（2022·四川内江·统考中考真题）More than 100 years ago, the ship Endurance fell to the deep sea in Antarctica (南极洲). Now it has been found. It was nearly 10,000 feet under the Weddell Sea.
In August, 1914, Ernest Shackleton led a team to Antarctica. He was planning to cross it. He started from England on the Endurance. In Antarctica, the ship got stuck in sea ice on January 24th. They tried their best to save the ship. They did whatever they could. Ten months later, the ice broke it. Endurance went down and down and finally disappeared under the sea ice. But luckily, all the team members were all right.
Nearly 107 years later, the ship has been found. Mensun Bound told the reporters that the ship is still in good condition. He’s a director of the search team for Endurance. The finding was made known to the public on March 9, 2022. “This is by far the finest wooden shipwreck (失事船只) I have ever seen,” Bound says.
Researchers used underwater drones (无人机) to search for Endurance. It took more than two weeks.
“In a way, we have made history with the discovery of Endurance,” says John Shears, who led the search.
Endurance will be protected as a historic place. There are no plans to raise it.

In 1976, the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) began a program to raise their number. Several Hood Island tortoises were brought to a special area on Santa Cruz Island, and young tortoises could be raised and cared for here. At the time, Diego had been living in a zoo in California for about 30 years. When scientists realized he was a Hood Island tortoise, he was returned to take part in the program. The program was a great success. In 2020, there are nearly 2,000 Hood Island tortoises alive. Diego is believed to be responsible for about 40% of them. Now scientists believe that the Hood Island tortoises won’t disappear.

（2021·四川内江·中考真题）Students in Kenya are returning for their third term. They begin their school year in January and it is broken up into three terms. In Kenya, in the past, students were not required to attend school an the education was not free, either.
I taugth math, English and physics at Chamasiri Secondary School whiel I was a teacher in Kenya. This school had four classrooms—one for each grade, Form 1, Form 2, Form 3 and Form 4. They are equivalent (对等) to our 9th ,10th ,11th, and 12th grade. Teachers traveled from classroom to classroom instead of the students going from room to room. The Form 1 class had 60 students, Form 2 had 45, Form 3 had 30, and Form 4 about 12 students. The class sizes became smaller as the grades continued on. Why did this happen Many families were very poor and couldn’t afford the school fees(学费).
Most countryside schools in Kenya did not have a lot of money. As a result, there were very few textbooks for the students to use. I had seven math texts for my Form 2 class and 14 for the Form 1 class. Anything the students needed to know was put up on the blackboard and the students copied it down into their noetbooks. The notebooks became the students’ textbooks.
Kenya students study ten different subject areas. Some of the students spend over an hour running home. They do chores at home and hopefully manage to find some time to study before it gets dark. Most familes do not have electricity and may not even have candles for their children to study by.
Luckily, Kenya education has been becoming better and better in the past few years. I’m sure it will have a good future.

First-grade teacher Katie Ricca of Florida has been giving her math lessons every day on Zoom. At the same time, she has to take care of the studies of her five little ones. So when she spared no effort to help one of her students out, the child’s mom couldn't stop singing her praises.
During one of her many Zoom calls, Katie noticed a girl named Hannah had shut down in the middle of the lesson. "Our class tried talking to her, but there's something wrong with her." Katie said later. When Hannah left the lesson early, she became worried.
Once class was over, Katie texted Kelley Close, her mom, to check in and found out Hannah “was sad but didn't know why." On hearing this, Katie asked if she could pay a short visit the next day. Kelley said yes.
“Today her teacher came over and hung out for some time.” Kelley wrote on Facebook. "They chatted, read books, and just talked. Though this woman has five kids at home, she kept social distancing(距离) with my daughter and sat in my driveway for an hour to make sure Hannah was okay."

A lot of countries need different kinds of seeds so that they can plant them again. There is an important reason for this. Sometimes plants can’t grow in a country because of bad weather or disease, so farmers need new seeds.
You can keep seeds in a “seed vault”. It’s a place at a special temperature. The seeds don’t grow, but they can live for a long time. Norway has the biggest seed vault in the world—the Svalbard Global Seed Vault —and it has seeds from a lot of different countries.
