It represents a complicated situation, in which once we tell a lie, we have to continue to tell more other lies in order to cover the previous ones.

1. Written more than two hundred years ago, these lines by Walter Scott remain one of the most well-known excerpts of Scottish poetry:
Oh, what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive!
此处written是-ed用作状语,与these lines构成逻辑上的被动关系,表示让步。

2. Perhaps we comfort ourselves with the knowledge that most of the lies we tell are “white lies”: little lies that we tell to protect others from the truth.
Paraphrase(释义): Maybe we think that most of the lies we tell are harmless “white lies”. We tell these lies to protect others from being hurt by the truth. Thinking this way, we feel comforted.
