Looking ahead, it is easy to imagine a future. We will be able to fly to work, print out a new pair of shoes or lift a car above our heads. Although there are some problems to solve before all of this is possible, we can certainly dream of a world. In this world, technology makes people's life easier and safer. We all need to quiet down! “The rising noise pollution in cities will become a top environmental threat(威胁),” the United Nations(UN) says in a report on February 17. The report asks governments to take action as soon as possible.
According to the UN, unwanted noise above 65 dB(分贝) is noise pollution. Noise becomes harmful when it's over 75 dB and is painful above 120 dB. People who live near airports or highways get affected by lots of noise pollution. When neighbors build houses or even stomp(跺脚) upstairs, that's also noise pollution.
High levels of noise does harm to human health. According to a science magazine, too much noise causes health problems like stress and tiredness from poor sleep. It may even cause serious problems like heart and hearing problems. In Europe, 12,000 people die each year from the effects of noise pollution.
