Passage 1(2022河北,10分)
“I could tell it was him by the way he walked.” If you've ever said that, you understand biometrics (生物识别技术). Biometric technology is an important topic in our work and private lives. It includes the use of fingerprints or knowing a person's voice. It is the science about what a person looks like and how a person does things. Like tree leaves, no two human beings are exactly the same. They've got different eyes and different hair. And everyone has a different way of walking or moving.
This technology can tell you from others. At the moment if you travel through an airport, you need your ID card or passport. If you go to your bank to get some money, you need a card and a special number. But what should you do if you lose your passport or forget your number Biometric technology can solve this problem. The technology is becoming more and more popular with old people because they no longer need to remember their passwords (密码).
This technology is all around us in our life. We use them to unlock a smart phone, get into our homes, start our cars without a key or even pay for our shopping.
Nothing is perfect. People are worried about the safety of their private information. However, the technology will become much better in the future, and it will become more and more important in our daily life.

Passage 2(2021河北,10分)
What will the world of tomorrow look like Many people today believe that technology is going to help solve some of the most difficult problems we have on Earth today. New technology may solve old problems, and it may also create new ones. No technology is perfect. Each has advantages and disadvantages, as these three examples.
When we dream about the future, many of us think that we will be able to fly to the skies in our own personal flying car. We could fly at 480 km per hour, avoiding traffic lights and busy roads. However, if the cars become popular, there will be problems with traffic control.
3D printing is another new technology for the future. 3D printers are already used to make life-size models of car parts, and man-made body parts, such as ears. As we move into the future, 3D printing will change the way we make things and the way we treat sick people. The disadvantage is that such a machine is very expensive.
Finally, people are trying to build a robot suit (套装). This is an electronic suit. It allows people to lift heavy objects and walk a long way. It might help people walk again after an illness or an accident. However, one disadvantage at the moment is cost.
Looking ahead, it is easy to imagine a future. We will be able to fly to work, print out a new pair of shoes or lift a car above our heads. Although there are some problems to solve before all of this is possible, we can certainly dream of a world. In this world, technology makes people's life easier and safer. It can solve some of the most difficult problems we have today.

Passage 3(2020河北,10分)
Remember books The paper kind. With pages. In the old days before computers, to get information, people read books and newspapers. Students spent hours and hours in the library, looking for information in the old books for homework. Now students can find anything on the internet in seconds. The library was a place where everyone was quiet. Sing along to music Never! Watch a movie on the phone while they are reading Impossible! But now students can watch videos about their research topic as they write a paper.
Before computers, articles were handwritten. If a student made a mistake, he would throw the paper away and start writing all over again. Now If a student makes a mistake, he can just remove or cut it. Students type on their computers and edit(编辑) freely. But they should save their writing in time on the computer because it may stop working suddenly. Who wants to lose his hard work forever
Communication online is easy and fun. While students are writing, they can discuss with friends in another window. Did you think they were chatting(聊天) with someone in the real same room No! They're chatting with everyone in their own room.
Technology helps us get important information in no time. In areas where bad weather is a problem, we can get warnings from our phone. Our local radio or TV station can give information about where to get help or what to do to keep our family and home safe.

Passage 4(2018河北,10分)
Artificial intelligence(AI)(人工智能) is growing rapidly. We are living in a world that depends more and more on AI. AI is a group of technologies that help machines get, understand and use information to do tasks.
AI's recent developments have got a lot of social attention. Some people have welcomed AI because it makes things possible. For example, AI will have a big influence on areas like medicine and engineering. But this attention has also produced a lot of fear. Especially, many workers are worrying that AI could make them lose their jobs.
According to a recent study, nearly five percent of jobs will disappear because of AI. In some industries, AI is already doing the work that people used to do, such as assembling (装配) cars, digging the coal and lifting goods. Self-driving cars and trucks controlled by AI will also take away the drivers' jobs in the future.
On the other hand, AI will also create many new jobs for people. More people will be needed to write programmes for AI systems (系统) and they will set up and work on them, too. Meanwhile, jobs that require feelings, excellent communication skills with people will not be replaced (取代) by AI. These include jobs in fields like teaching, nursing and personal training.
AI is here. It is changing how people live and work in many ways. That makes AI important to watch, not to fear.

Passage(2019河北,10分)
Critical thinking(批判性思维)is trying to improve the way you think. People use critical thinking in every area of life to solve problems and evaluate claims(评估主张).
Like every other skill, critical thinking takes practice. When a problem comes our way, we need to think critically to decide how to solve it. When we see an advertisement, for example, we should stop and think. Advertisements are made to make people feel certain that they are true, and then people can buy the products. But is what the advertisement says true Is it making a claim Or does it only interest us Critical thinking is important and stops us from making poor choices. In fact, we are using it if we ask questions naturally about what we see.
Practice makes perfect. While you are growing in critical thinking, you'll become a wiser and more thoughtful person. There are many ways of doing practice. Here are a few:
★Read about a topic people disagree on. Look at articles or books on all sides of the subject. For each side of the subject, think carefully and evaluate it.
★When you see or hear a claim, ask questions about it. Who is making the claim and why
★Evaluate your own thinking. Where and why do you think uncritically How can you improve
Critical thinking should be part of everything we do. It may help you to succeed at work or school. Make yourself into a habit of critical thinking. Change your thoughts and change your world.

Passage 1(2022石家庄一模)
When you hear “single-use”, you might think of something like chopsticks from fast food restaurants. You use them once, throw them away and forget about them. But when we forget about them, we also forget that we're creating waste.
“Single-use” was chosen as Collins Dictionary's “Word of the Year” for 2018. The idea of single-use is not just about real objects that we can touch or see. It also includes the ways that we communicate.
On social media, we see pictures, news and articles everywhere. We look, laugh and keep scrolling(滚屏). We never look twice. This is called single-use media. It's all about sharing the small things of our lives. For example, I know what restaurant all of my friends went to last night. However, I don't know their deepest thoughts and feelings about serious problems. I don't even know what their dinner tasted like. I look at their pictures and give them a “Like”. Then I “throw it away” and keep scrolling.
Social media nowadays make it very easy for us to forget what we have lost. Before we use social media and send messages on the phone, we communicated by talking. We had to remember or write down important things. Many people also communicated by writing letters, which took time and energy. They had to think carefully about each sentence. People treasured(珍惜) and kept letters for years. A letter was serious. It's a shared piece of the writer's spirit.
On social media, we treat our friends and family like cheap chopsticks. It's simple and efficient(有效率的) in use, but we don't spend time sharing little pieces of our thoughts and feelings any more.

Passage 2(2022石家庄一模)
If you are like me, you have a big heart but do not have the pocketbook to match. In my search for ways to make our world a more pleasant place, I have found a few ways to make it better. Here are some ways you can be a kind person.
Donate(捐赠) clothes or household items(家庭用品).
If you go through your rooms, you will find several things you no longer need or use. Donate these items to a charity(慈善机构). Now isn't that better than just throwing away them
Donate hair.
If you have long hair and you are considering getting a haircut, why not donate your hair to a charity to help a sick child In most cases, all you need is 8 to 12 inches of hair which you are willing to give up.
Donate time.
Becoming a volunteer(志愿者) in your community(社区) can be a very useful experience. There are lots of ways to lend a helping hand in your community. Find something that interests you to help out. As a volunteer you can decide how much time you can offer.
Donate recyclable goods.
Many cities collect recyclable goods and turn the money to charities. As we all know, recycling is also good for the environment. You can feel good about doing two good things at the same time.

Passage 1(2022石家庄一模)
Life will probably be very different in 2050. First of all, it looks as though TV channels will have disappeared by 2050. Instead, people will choose a program from a “menu” and a computer will send the program directly to the television. Today, we can use the World Wide Web to read newspaper stories and see pictures on a computer thousands of kilometers away. By 2050, music, films, programs, newspapers and books will come to us in this way.
In many places, agriculture is developing quickly and people are growing fruit and vegetables for export. This uses a lot of water. Therefore, there could be serious water shortages. Some futurologists(未来学家) predict that water could be the cause of wars if we don't act now.
In the future, it will be much easier and faster to travel. Cars will run on new, clean fuels and they will go very fast. Cars will have computers to control the speed and there won't be any accidents. Today, many cars have computers that tell drivers exactly where they are. By 2050, the computer will control the car and drive it to your destination. Also, by 2050, space planes will fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo in just two hours.
Some big companies now prefer to use robots that do not ask for pay ment and work 24 hours a day. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere—in factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes.
By 2050, we will be able to help blind and deaf people see and hear again. In the last few years, scientists have discovered how to control genes and have already produced clones of animals. By 2050, scientists will be able to produce clones of people and decide how they look, how they behave and how much intelligence they have. Scientists will be able to do these things, but should they

Passage 2(2022石家庄一模)
Do you like remembering things Is that difficult or easy for you I'd like to tell you some ways to improve your memory(记忆力).
My first advice is that if you want to remember something well, you have to review it often. You might review material(材料) two days after learning it, then a week later, then two weeks later, and then a month later. After a month, you will find that you can remember the material easily.
My second advice is to use a colored pen to mark the important parts on your book. This will help you in two ways. First, it will help you pay attention to the most important parts when you learn the language. It is always easier to remember only the key points. Second, this will make reviewing easier. When you open your book, the colored parts will show you the most important things quickly. In this way, you don't have to review all the material again.
Another piece of advice is to use the proper time well. First, review all the information in your mind before you go to sleep. Because your brain is working while you are sleeping. If you think about the information before you go to sleep, you might be able to remember it better. Another good time for memorizing information is morning because you have just rested and your brain is fresh and clear. So you might also try to review the important information in the morning.

Passage 1(2022石家庄一模)
In the future, people may travel to Mars by water-powered spaceship! Today's spaceships are fine for getting things into space, but they are not so good at travelling long distances. These spaceships burn chemical fuels(燃料), and they are very expensive. Scientists say that a water-powered spaceship could make the trip to Mars much cheaper. Scientists think such a spaceship could be developed soon.
The key to the water-powered spaceship is the engine. Regular engines push spaceships by burning fuels. The water engine will use steam(水蒸气), created by solar panels(太阳能电池板) that heat water to a high temperature. Of course, the spaceship will have to carry a lot of water for the long trip to Mars. Today's spaceships could not carry that much water. But scientists think that a spaceship blown up like a balloon will be able to do it.
One US company has already developed a spaceship like this. These spaceships are made of strong material. Two of them have already been sent up into space, using rockets and then later filled with air. “Balloon” spaceships could carry enough water for a long trip. With the “Balloon” spaceships, enough water could be carried to power the engines and grow food during the trip. And the people on the spaceship might even get to take a hot bath!
Scientists say the biggest advantage of such a spaceship would be the cost. The “Balloon” spaceship uses water to push it through space and costs about one thirtieth of a normal spaceship. If these scientists are correct, we may soon be on our way to Mars in the special spaceship.

Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei. It is a beautiful, large and very important city in China. During the last Spring Festival, the city received tons of attention because a novel coronavirus(新型冠状病毒) appeared there and spread around the country. Two days before the Spring Festival, Wuhan was locked and the city became quiet and still.
A big fight against the novel coronavirus was going on there. The doctors and nurses there became brave warriors(勇士) in masks(口罩), glasses and protective suits. Many of them had to work over ten hours every day, drinking little or no water. They risked their health and even their lives to treat the patients. Thousands of doctors and nurses from other cities and provinces in China went to Wuhan to support them. There is no doubt that they were all heroes in the fight.
Besides doctors and nurses, everyone in our country was doing their own part in the fight against the novel coronavirus.

How will the Internet change the world Will we enjoy a smarter life in the future Many of the world's biggest Internet companies took part in an important meeting. They talked about how to build a future for our online world. The companies at the meeting showed us some of their latest technology.
Lip reading Machines can not only read faces. They can also read your lip movements. The Chinese Internet company Sogou has developed lip reading technology. You don't need to speak aloud. The machine turns your lip movements into voice or text. Police can also use this technology. Sometimes they see criminals(罪犯) on city-monitoring(城市监控) cameras, but they don't know what they say. The lip reading technology can help them with this.
Smart shoes Your feet might hurt if your shoes do not fit you. This won't happen if you wear “smart” custom-made shoes. The Xiemofang company brought a machine to the meeting. The machine scans(扫描) your feet. It records 39 parts of your feet. It even records how long each toe is. It also has a database(数据库). The database has more than 10,000 kinds of shoes. You can choose the color and style. It also gives you suggestions for your choices. The suggestions are based on records of other people's feet. You can get your new shoes after 10 days.
Unmanned supermarkets(无人超市) You walk into a supermarket, pick out your goods and go to check out. But there is no worker. There is just a tablet(牌) that says “Please smile”. Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not munication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some suggestions for you to bridge the generation gap(消除代沟).
Don't argue(争辩) with your parents.
Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can't express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Find out and truly understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise(和解).
Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.

Passage 1
This past fall was really unforgettable for me. I was at a neighbourhood pool party on a Friday afternoon. I live in Texas so it's warm—even in October. My friend and I went outside to look for a pair of swimming glasses and saw someone at the bottom of the pool. We thought it was one of our friends playing, but we quickly realized that it was a little boy who didn't know how to swim. I knew something was wrong right away.
We looked around, but the adults were talking far away in the backyard and there was no time to spare. I jumped into the pool and came close to the little boy. I swam as hard as I could and pulled the little boy onto a step in the pool. As soon as I got him out of the water, my friend and I started shouting for help. When the adults heard us, they ran over. The little boy wasn't breathing, which was really terrible. One neighbour did CPR(心肺复苏) and someone else called 911. Soon the doctors came and took the little boy to the hospital.
Luckily, the little boy is doing great now. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get him out of the water quickly enough, but I did. I've been taking swimming lessons since I was three years old, and I'm thankful that I'm a strong swimmer.
My parents are so proud of me and people tell me I'm a hero, but what else could I have done He needed help, and I knew what to do.

Passage 2
Do you know how to make your study more effective(有效的) Almost every student has his own learning method, but a conversation with my deskmate gave me new ideas on how to study effectively.
My deskmate was a typical procrastinator(拖拉的人) in the eyes of our teachers, and she always finished her homework later than me. However, what puzzled me most was she made progress gradually while I couldn't. Once, I asked her, “How do you improve your grades You do your homework so slowly.” She answered, “Doing my homework slowly doesn't mean that I don't study. Instead, I just go over what I have learnt first, and then do the homework.”
I suddenly realized that she wasn't a procrastinator. She just spent her time thinking and reviewing. When she was reviewing, she looked for her mistakes and then corrected them. When we learn a new thing, we remember it well at first. Then we gradually forget it. A few days later, we may keep nothing at all in mind. But reviewing helps us to master new knowledge better.
When we don't have to prepare for exams, we should review the knowledge and learn from mistakes. When exams are coming, it's always wise to start preparing for them.

It includes the use of fingerprints or knowing a person's voice. It is the science about what a person looks like and how a person does things.
