Scientists recently announced the world’s tiniest remote-controlled (远控) robots. These robots are small enough to sit on a coin. The scientists were so excited. 1
The news come from Northwestern University. Last week, scientists at Northwestern University introduced several tiny robots they have created. The tiniest is shaped like a crab and is just half a millimeter (毫米) wide. 2 But they can be controlled from a distance (距离) by using lasers (激光).
3 But the robots are also not too slow because of their tiny size. Right now the robots aren’t all that useful. 4 But the scientists say these robots are an important step toward creating more helpful tiny robots.
The scientists say that one day tiny robots like these may be able to work in very small areas, such as human’s vessels (血管). It’s possible that scientists can build very tiny
robots. 5
Using similar building methods (方法), the scientists can create a number of different tiny robots. “Our methods allow us to build walking robots with almost any sizes or 3D shapes,” says John Rodgers, one of the scientists.
A. The robots can’t move fast. B. All they can do is only moving. C. The robots don’t have any power of their own. D. They were also able to control the movement of the robot in different directions. E. They predict that one day these robots may work in areas which are too small for tools. F. Hope one day those tiny robots can travel inside the human body to help deal with medical problems!

As time moves forward, everything around us changes. We can’t deny (否认) that it is technology that makes life much better! Here are some examples.

Then: Snail mail (邮寄信件) was a main way of keeping in touch with your faraway friends or relatives then. I remember having pen pals in primary school and being very excited about writing letters and buying stamps. Although there’s something very romantic about the idea of snail mail, it’s slow.
Now: Today, we’d like to use anything else but snail mail to learn about each other. We can just send an instant message on social media or have messaging or video chat. Technology has successfully shortened the time from several days to minutes.
●Transportation
Then: You may not be able to imagine that people once thought that the roads were dangerous. When cars were a new invention, a man walked in front of them with a red flag, warning others to watch out. Now, of course, we are used to them.
Now: Technology has greatly changed transportation. My grandparents still can’t get over the fact that with a click of a button, you can have a car pick you up right to your doorstep. Besides, with the help of technology, travel can become a lot more eco-friendly. Gone are the days when you had to print out your airline or train tickets. Instead, we now have e-tickets.
● Entertainment
Then: It’s hard to believe that over half a century ago, we were first introduced to the large and heavy box called a television set. Your grandparents can tell you that when they first started watching TV, pictures were black and white, and most of them were about family or news.
Now: Technology has diversified (使……多样化) the entertainment world. We can read news on the Internet, read books on e-readers and watch movies online.
Technology has changed our life. It seems that our dependence on technology isn’t such a bad thing.

My dad is very interested in history and the Silk Road has always fascinated him. He has told me many things about it. Although it's called the Silk Road, people traded much more than silk. The Silk Road went through Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. It was 6, 500 km from Xi'an to Rome and it played an important role in the development of the world. My family spent a holiday last summer and went to some famous places along the original road.
We started at Lanzhou and went on to Wuwei. Wuwei was a very important city on the Silk Road. It connected three main cities in the area in ancient times. It was also a capital. Although it's now a modem city, you can sense history when you visit it. We saw lots of very old stone monuments (纪念碑)and people there were very proud of their city*s long history.
The next stop was Jiayuguan. It's quite near the desert, and was an important place on the Silk Road. It was a busy city with a lot of people coming and going. Even today, it's still busy. An important part of the Great Wall was also built here.
After that, we went on to Yumenguan. I first found out about Yiimenguan from Wang Zhihuan, an ancient Chinese poet. It was in the Gobi Desert and was the only connection between Central Asia and China. I wonder how people went through the hot desert so long ago.
Finally, we arrived in Dunhuang, a city with long history and great artworks. It was influenced by many different cultures over times. Now, it's a major place of interest in north-west China.
This trip wasn't just a scenic journey. It helped me understand the history of the area and see how people from different places influenced each other in many ways.
A scenic, 1 and cultural journey on Silk Road

A group of university graduates (毕业生) visited their teacher. During their visit, they began to talk about their work. 1 After offering coffee to his guests, the teacher went to the kitchen and came back with a coffee pot and a basket, filled with many different cups: glass, clay, plastic and crystal (水晶) and so on.
2 The teacher asked them to pick out their cups first. When the graduates picked out their favorite cups, the teacher explained: “Notice how all the beautiful cups were picked out and the simple and the cheap ones were left.”
“Wanting only the best things for yourself is the main reason of your problems and stress.
3 Actually, all that you wanted was the coffee, not the cup. But you chose the best cups, and then looked to see what cups others picked.”
“Life is the coffee. Your job, money, position in society...they are cups. 4 Sometimes, we only look at the cups and forget to enjoy the taste of coffee. The happiest people are not those who have the best things, but those who enjoy life and make good use of what they have.
Hearing this, the graduates were speechless. They had learned another important life lesson from their teacher. 5
A. Some cups were simple, other ones expensive. B. The type of cup can’t decide the quality (质量) of life. C. You need to understand that the cup doesn’t make the coffee better. D. The happiest people are the ones who care mostly about making more money. E. True happiness means enjoying life and not worrying about unimportant things. F. The graduates were complaining about their problems and stress in work and in life.

Classrooms in the USA are different from those in China. This offers us a chance to learn about their educational style.
In China, most students have fixed classrooms. Teachers take turns teaching in different classrooms. Teaching in this way makes sure that all students learn the same things. But students are not given many choices. No matter whether you like a subject or not, you have to learn it.
In the USA, students often change classrooms based on different subjects. Besides compulsory classes (必修课) like English and math, teens can choose to learn about what they are interested in. For example, some kids may choose to study music or advanced math (高等数学) .
Classroom arrangements (安排) also make a difference. Chinese classrooms are arranged in a traditional way, with rows of desks and chairs facing a blackboard. Teachers usually stand on a platform when teaching.
However, in the USA classrooms, seating arrangements are flexible (灵活的) depending on different class activities. For example, if students need to have a group discussion, two or three of them will let their desks and chairs be together so that they can sit face to face. Students in drama or music classes also have different seating arrangements that make it easier for them to perform. Sometimes, teachers even sit with their students.
It’s hard to say which way is “best”, or if there even is an ideal (理想的) way to arrange classrooms. You just have to find the one that works for you.
Classrooms in different countries
Types of classrooms In China ※ Students’ classrooms are fixed. ※ Teachers teach the students in different classrooms 6 . ※ All students learn the same things, but they aren’t able to 7 their subjects.
In the USA ※ Students go to different classrooms for different subjects. ※ Students are given chance to choose their subjects 8 their interests.
Classroom arrangement In China ※ 9 ※ Desks and chairs are in rows and face the blackboard.
In the USA ※ Flexible ※ Students can 10 their desks and chairs depending on different class activities.
