Follow these tips to start a book drive in your neighborhood or school.
Before your book drive
Identify your volunteers. Recruit a committee of volunteers to assist you with planning and
pick-ups on collection day.
Decide on the logistics (组织工作).
●Determine where to hold the book drive. Good locations include: small retail (零售) businesses or local schools.
You can ask businesses all over your area to collect books for the drive.
●Choose an appropriate time to hold the book drive. Join forces with an already-scheduled community event, or draw on a national celebration.
●At each collection location, ask for approval from management, and place boxes in a highly visible area.
●Determine what type of books you want to collect and what age group you are targeting. Your range can be as wide or narrow as you like.
●Determine the length of your book drive. A typical one lasts2-3 weeks.
●Select who is going to receive the books, and promote them in your other advertising efforts.
●Organize your materials. You'll need boxes to distribute to businesses, storage space for the collected books and flyers (传单) to advertise your drive.
●Plan a kick-off event. Host a party, and ask each attendee to bring a book.
During your book drive
●Motivate. Organize a competition to encourage friends, neighbors, other parents, club members to donate. Keep track of which location and which individual contributes the most books. Recognize the donors with certificates or awards.
●Spread the word. The most successful way to gather books is to ask your personal network to contribute. Make these requests in person or by phone. To reach a larger audience: Hang flyers in
grocery stores and schools (with permission).
After your book drive
●Sort your books. Count the number of books you collected, and sort them by age range of
where they will be donated.
●Review. Get your committee together to consider what worked and what didn't. Document changes to make your next book drive even better.

Today's amazing newspaper headline: First family of four to walk to the South Pole wearing Mickey Mouse ears an clown's shoes.
No, not rally It isn't true. I invented it. But I wouldn't be surprised to see it one day soon. In the last decade, I've seen headlines saying: “The youngest Briton to climb Qomolangma,” “The first person to cross the Pacific Ocean on a windsurfing board” and “The first people to fly around the world in a hot-air balloon”, Why do they do it And why should I be interested anyway
Human beings have already climbed the highest mountains, sailed across the oceans and flown around the world. People have already reached the most remote parts of our planet. There just isn't anything left to explore nowadays. So, those who feel the need for adventure can only do things that have been done before.
What is so great about climbing Qomolangma these days anyway People pay thousands of
dollars to be taken up the mountain by the local Sherpas, who lead the way and carry the bags. At any one time there are about a thousand people either climbing up or on their way back down. As a result, Qomolangma is covered with rubbish and the Sherpas have to make special trips up the mountain to pick it up. The climbers are often inexperienced and when they get into trouble other people have to risk their lives to bring them down to safety. Helicopter crews have been killed trying to reach people stuck on the mountain.
A British man became the first person to walk alone from Canada to the geographic North Pole. The problem was that he went in the spring, when the ice begins to melt and break up. So he got stuck on an isolated piece of ice and a plane had to be sent in to rescue him. It's very difficult to land a plane on breaking ice and the people who risked their lives to do it weren't very happy.
What do you think Are these explorers heroes or a danger to other people Examples of courage and determination which should inspire the rest of us Or a waste of time, energy and money 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126

From writing Shakespeare-style poetry to making music, ChatGPT has amazed the world since its launch in late 2022 by the US-based company OpenAI. It even passed several law exams in four courses at the University of Minnesota, US, according to CNN.
The AI program can answer questions on a whole host of topics and write essays, stories and any other written texts you can think of. It does this by drawing on information collected from a large corpus (语料库) of text data.
What makes ChatGPT so impressive As Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAl said in an interview with Forbes, “it's not actually fundamentally new technology that made this (ChatGPT) have a moment.”
According to MIT Technology Review, ChatGPT is based on GPT-3, a large language model. Because texts are more complicated than the meaning of every word combined, language models
require a type of neural network(神经网络) that can make sense of texts.
One breakthrough behind today's model is a network called Transformer, which was invented by Google researchers in 2017. The neural network can infer word meanings by tracking where the word appears in a sentence. Transformer can therefore capture the meaning of texts more accurately.
The GPT models built by OpenAI combined Transformer with unsupervised (无人指导的)
learning, meaning that the models can learn by themselves without being told what to look at. ChatGPT can now generate human-like responses instantly due to the large scale of texts it learned from. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
“One of the biggest problems with ChatGPT is that it comes back, very confidently, with falsities,” Michael Wooldridge at the Alan Turing Institute in London, UK, told The Guardian. This means that ChatGPT doesn't know the truth about the world — it learns information from various resources but it cannot decide what is true or false.
Some argue that ChatGPT will be used to generate fake news, spread falsities, or be used for ill purposes. As for education, many US schools recently banned students from using ChatGPT on school networks because students began to use it as a shortcut for essays.
28. How does ChatGPT work
A. By making complicated texts simpler.
B. By gathering a wide variety of information.
C. By passing several law exams in four courses.
D. By employing its large collection of information.
29. What makes ChatGPT so amazing
A. A completely new technology.
B. The ability to track the location of a word.
C. The combination of a network and self-learning.
D. Better understanding of the meaning of every word.
30. What does the underlined word “falsities” mean in the last but one paragraph
A. False information. B. Something new.
C. Various resources. D. Timely responses.
31. Why is ChatGPT forbidden in many us schools
A. Because a ban on it has recently been passed.
B. Because it provides fake news that will mislead students.
C. Because students use it for the purpose of improving their essays.
D. Because with it, students finish their assignments without thinking.

Did you watch the popular TV series Meet Yourself during your winter vacation In the TV series, the heroine Xu Hongdou travels to a village in Yunnan province and volunteers at a local cafe. She gets free meals in return. As the show finds a growing audience, volunteer travel—an old-yet-modern form of travel similar to Xu's type of work — has attracted more attention.
Volunteer travel refers to taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity to help others. These volunteer trips are usually arranged by church organizations, human interest groups or nonprofit organizations, and they take form of equal exchanges. During the trip, volunteer travelers often provide services like teaching, cooking, animal caring, and cultural activities. In exchange for their help, the volunteers may get free or discounted accommodation, meals and laundry, activities, or classes.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself describes, more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteers originate from in recent years. Sanlian Lifeweek magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living. Yang Yan, a founder of a volunteer platform, told the magazine that it has indeed been a growing trend for urban residents to volunteer in rural areas.
People try volunteer travel for several reasons. By working voluntarily while traveling, travelers may make a real, positive impact on the world. The services volunteers provide can be through charities with lower costs for the communities they serve. Another benefit of volunteer travel is that it helps urban residents to experience rural life. For those who are sick of urban pressure but can’t make up their minds whether to move permanently to the countryside, volunteer travel can be a solution. In this way, as Yang comments, travelers can catch some relief from their busy lives, while rural communities also benefit by receiving more customers for local tourism industries and temporary high-quality labor. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126

A. Its only purpose is to help others.

34. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about
A. A new trend of volunteer trips. B. The future of volunteer trips.
C. The significance of volunteer trips. D. Different views on volunteer trips.
35. Why are more urban residents attracted by volunteer projects in rural areas nowadays
A. To give back to society. B. To get away from busy lives.

第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
For many of us, work diaries are practical things. We use them to make notes of appointments or meetings, writing words next to dates to remind us of what we need to do later. But journaling is also about feelings. It’s a personal diary, often kept far from prying eyes, sometimes containing our secrets and desires. 36
It can be difficult to say exactly what we’re feeling due to anxiety or frustration. For some of us, putting pen to paper and taking down our thoughts is much easier than saying them. 37 It can also be relieving to make sense of something which is stressing us out, annoying us or getting us down.
Writing about what is on our minds can help us to be more mindful. It is also good for mental health overall. 38 Maybe our thoughts could be best represented by a drawing.
Another thing to consider is that our memories fade over time. 39 Logging what’s happening in our lives currently could help bring back memories when we read our diary entries again years from now, or could act as an insight into our past-selves. We can see our progress, or be reminded of exciting times in our lives. The person who was once annoying may have become a close friend, or something that was once scary may now seem funny.
40 If something exciting happens, writing about it may help us to remember that wonderful time!
A. And journaling isn’t just limited to words.
B. Journaling is not a record of only happy moments.
C. But what are the benefits of writing down our feelings
D. It’s about allowing ourselves to learn from our mistakes.
E. So, when something is on our minds, we should put it down on paper.
F. What is clear on our minds today may be forgotten a few years down the line.
G. Not just that, but writing things down can help us understand our ideas, emotions and feelings.

Steve grabbed his bat and glove. “See you later, Mom. I’m going to Paul’s.” He raced out the door and slammed it behind him. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day so they could make the freshman team.
Paul was waiting outside for Steve. “What are you doing Where’s your stuff ” Steve lifted his bat onto his shoulder when catching sight of Paul.
Paul shook his head unhappily. “I have to clean Mr. Thompson’s garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can’t do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Thompson’s. They’re kind of old.”
“OK,” said Steve. “I’ll help you. We’ll get done quicker working together.”
The boys went down the block to the Thompson’s and got started. They found a couple of brooms and shovels (铲). Before they swept, they put boxes that were strewn (遍布) around the garage floor on shelves. As Paul put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn’t sealed, so he opened it. There were lots of one-hundred-dollar bills.
“You’ve got to see this,” he pulled out a handful of bills and showed Steve with his eyes lit up. “Where did you get that ” said Steve. Paul pointed to the shelf. “It just fell down when the box fell. There’s got to be a couple of thousand dollars here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know.” 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
Steve furrowed his brow (皱眉) and shook his head. “Are you crazy That’s stealing.” “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. 第四部分 写作
第一节 应用文
Distinguished judges and dear fellow students,
It’s my honor to stand here and talk about “Promoting traditional Chinese festivals”. As we all know, traditional Chinese festivals are an important part of Chinese culture. Firstly, traditional Chinese festivals teach us a lot about our nation’s history. Moreover, they enable us to learn about fine Chinese values, thus helping us pass them down.
Therefore, promoting traditional festivals is high on the agenda. Declaring public holidays on some traditional festivals is undoubtedly a good way to raise people’s awareness of these festivals. Besides, schools can hold more activities to help draw students’ attention to our tradition.
Only with the joint efforts can traditional Chinese festivals be really promoted.
Thank you very much for your attention! (96words)
第二节 读后续写
“Boys, I baked a chocolate cake,” Mr. Thompson walked into the garage. Catching sight of Mrs Thompson, the two froze with fear and followed his step with racing hearts. A few minutes later, they were served with large slices of cake. Delicious as the cake was, they didn’t have any appetite. Mr. Thompson seemed to notice something was wrong, “Boys, do you like the cake ” Paul nodded with his eyes dropping to avoid any eye contact with Mr. Thompson and growing guilt crept into his heart.
When they were about to leave, Mr. Thompson handed Paul a brand-new bat and glove.
Paul looked at them, his face blushing with shame. “Th ... thanks so much.” Voice trembling, Paul then bravely poured out everything about the envelope and apologized for his behavior. Mr. Thompson, instead of boiling with anger, patted him on the back and said gently: “Oh, thank you for helping me find the envelope. I totally forgot where I had put it.” In that split moment, it dawned on him that what really matters is simply honesty and kindness. (153words)

M: I’m the opposite. I don’t know many people. Can you share some tips about making new friends
W: Sure. To start with, you need to spend more time on outdoor activities like going to parties or watching movies with friends. (15)
M: Well, I only go out once a month.
W: If that, you’re meant to be my cool older brother.
M: Sorry. I guess as I got older, I became less interested in going out. I prefer to stay at home and read a book. It is one of the few things I’d like to do when I have time. (16)
W: Or play computer games. But you should try experiencing real life once in a while.
M: Well, what else can I do
W: Join a club or a hobby group. For example, I’m in a band and I volunteer at the Animal Home on weekends.
M: I did get invited to a book group a few months ago.
W: There you go. It’s all about meeting people with the same interests.
M: I’m just not very confident when it comes to meeting new people. (17)
W: Well, the best solution to that is to introduce yourself to people until you’re no longer afraid to do so. (17)
M: You make it sound so easy. W: It is, if you put your mind to it.

Everyone, could you please all gather at the side of the room to allow other visitors to pass (20) The extraordinary drawing in front of you is The Kiss by Gustav Klimt. (18) I’m sure many of you have seen it before. It was painted between 1907 and 1908, and as you can see, the artist made use of many bright colors, including gold. (18) Most of you will probably be familiar with it from books and calendars, so it is probably larger than you expected it to be. The theme, of course, is love. And the brilliant clothes painted in an abstract style must have been very surprising for viewers at the time. Klimt’s use of gold leaf in paintings was inspired by a trip he made to Italy in 1903. When he visited Ravenna, he saw ancient works of art which used gold and this greatly impressed him. (19) Klimt was a well-respected artist during his lifetime. He had fourteen children and his famous paintings are on display all over the world. Now, ladies and gentlemen, could you please follow me as we make our way to the sculpture(雕像) gallery (20)
