After school, it’s very difficult for Vishal Singh to make a choice. He knows he should really go on with his homework, but the Internet is so attractive that he can’t really pay much attention to his study.
“Students have always faced distractions(分心) and time-wasters,” writes Matt Richtel in the New York Times. He says that computers are a real challenge for students. They need to pay more attention to their learning.
Students say that their parents are worried about the distractions and try to control their computer time. But it is still difficult to manage the time of using computers.
Teachers at Woodside commonly think technology makes students difficult to concentrate(集中精力) in class, but they are divided over whether computer and the Internet are the solutions.
In Richtel’s article, English teacher Marcia Blondel feels disappointed with her students. She isn’t able to get them to read 30 pages of a book for homework. In order to solve this problem, she asks them to take part in a read-aloud of the book in class.
But as some teachers express their worries over students’ digital diets, seeing it as a way, they are trying to use technology in the classroom to draw the attention of these 21st-century students. The headmaster of Woodside High School, David Reilly, asks teachers to build websites to communicate with students. The students are allowed to use computers., smart phones or other new technology to interact(互动) with their teachers. It’s convenient for them to search for some useful materials that they need before class. With the help of the new technology, the students have more chances to share their ideas with each other and spend less time on video games. So, they pay more attention to their study and they don’t show up with bleary-eyes(睡眼朦胧的) any more. Mr. Reilly also spends a large amount of money building up a multimedia(多媒体) centre and introduce new courses like the digital audio recording(数码录像) class.
“We try our best to take back their attention and make them concentrate on their study,” he says. “To a degree, we’re using technology to do it.”
Some schools are looking to use the Internet to encourage students to study.

Global Warming
Satter lives in Bonnotola (BT) in southwestern Bangladesh (孟加拉国) . The small seaside village was once home to 2,000 people. Most of them were farmers, like Satter. But rising seas poisoned (毒化) the soil with salt water. Two major storms in the last two years destroyed the mud barriers (土坝) that protected the village from the sea. Today, only 480 people remain.
“The effects of global warming are destroying parts of Bangladesh,” said Mohammad who is the head of the research center PRD.
Salt in soil has increased by 26 percent over the past 35 years. In 1973, 833,000 hectares of land were poisoned by sea water. Areas of fresh water were also poisoned. This grew to 1.02 million hectares in 2000, and 1.056 million hectares in 2009, reports Bangladesh’s SRDI.
At BT village, the women walk up to 4 kilometers to a well to collect water for cooking and drinking every day. Wells in the area only have fresh water in the months after yearly heavy rains. In the summer, fresh water is difficult to find, said one of the women, Halder.
The villages lie in Bangladesh’s southwestern Shyamnagar area. The area is home to 400,000 people. Officials say the government does not have the money to build desalination factories. “The area needs maybe 500 desalination factories. But we’ve only got 50,” said Alamgir head of a local organization.
The United Nations made a report that warned global warming would get worse in the coming years even if humans immediately stopped producing carbon gas.

No matter what the world leaders do, there are a lot of ways individual (个体) people can make choices to protect the environment. People can change what they eat or travel without getting on an airplane, for example.
Benjamin Clarysse is a bio-engineer who works with a number of environmental groups in northern Belgium. He warns, political leaders still need to promise changes. They cannot just depend on citizens doing their part. “They cannot just say that everyone should just do a little bit of the work,” Clarysse said. “Depending on just the goodwill of people won’t get you there.”

Seven Tips to Protect the Environment
We all want to protect our planet，but we're mostly too busy or too lazy to put up big change that would improve our lifestyle and save the environment.
These are some simple habits in your everyday life which will make a difference. There is nothing new here but if you follow at least some of these tips，you can be proud of yourself participating in the protection of the environment.
*Use fluorescent light bulbs（荧光灯）：
It is true the fluorescent light bulbs are more popular than the ordinary ones，because they last much longer and they can save energy and in the long run your electricity bill would be reduced，But they have one disadvantage﹣﹣they are more expensive.
*Donate（捐赠）：
You have tons of clothes or things you want to get rid of. If they are still usable，you may choose to give them to associations（协会）. These associations may sell them and collect a little money. Not only will you protect the environment，but you will also contribute to a good cause.
*Turn off your devices：
When you do not use a house device（设备），turn it off. For example，if you don't watch TV，turn it off. Turn off the light when you leave a room（even if you want to return）. It's an easy habit to take up which will help you save a lot of money.
*Walk or cycle ：
Driving is one of the biggest causes of pollution. If you want to use your car ask yourself the following question：Do I really need my car？Walk or use your bike if the journey is a short one.
*Detergent（洗涤剂）：
Follow the recommended dose（推荐量） to wash your clothes or dishes.
*Dripping taps
Watch dripping taps，which can cause a significant increase in the water bill. An average of 120 liters of water can be wasted because of a dripping tap.
* Rainwater：
Think of recovering rainwater. This water can be used for different purposes.
This list is far from waste but in addition to saving the environment，all tips will help you save money.
