The way students spendtheir weekends can be different—some may enjoy going out and partying, andothers would prefer staying in with friends and family watching a movie.
Going out can seem like themain thing that happens during the weekend. But not everyone is into that—somestudents study or stay in with friends, and others simply just don't go outbecause it is not their type of thing. If you are one of those people whodecides to stay in, you probably know the feeling of being the "lame (差劲的) friend."This leads to feeling bad about yourself andfeeling like a buzzkill.
When students feel thisway, they can also feel pressured into doing something that they originally didnot want to do. Just because a person does not want to go out to party anddrink does not mean that they are lame—they just have a different idea of a funweekend. I have never been pressured into going out, but I do catch myselfwondering sometimes why people choose to stay in the library instead of goinghome and watching a movie.
I don't think we shouldassume that everyone needs to go out during the weekend in order to have fun,and the social pressure to do so can be terrible. We should keep in mind thatindividuals are going through their own personal situations, and everyone hastheir own reasons for not going out. Staying in and watching a movie byyourself or with friends is not a bad thing, and people should normalize thatnot going out on the weekends is really not the worst thing.
I remember watching "Wherethe Crawdads Sing" with some friends one enjoyable and relaxing weekend. This type of environment didn't make me feel pressured into doing anythingbecause someone else was doing it.
24.What does the underlined word "buzzkill" mean in Paragraph 2
A.Someone who is very popular. B.Someone who is easy-going.
C.A person feeling quite comfortable. D.A person letting others down.
25.Which of the following statements does the author agree with
A.Some students spend their weekends outside for social pressure.
B.We should spend the weekends with friends with the same interests.
C.Going out at weekends is a good opportunity to strengthen your friendship.
D.Going out at weekends against one's will doesn't affect his or her feelings.
26.Why does the author refer to a movie-watching experience in Paragraph 5
A.To show a good environment. B.To support his opinion.
C.To introduce a good movie. D.To offer a way of having fun.
27.What is the article mainly about
A.Going out for your weekends is very popular.
B.Enjoying your weekends at home is a better choice.
C.How you spend your weekends depends on yourself.
D.Whether you can have a good weekend lies in your character.

A ship has used autonomous (自主的) sailing technology to complete a trip across world oceans for the first time. The Mayflower Autonomous Ship is a completely autonomous ocean research ship powered by artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The Mayflower recently completed a five-week trip across the Atlantic Ocean without any humans on board. It set off from the British port of Plymouth on April 27 and arrived in the eastern Canadian city of Halifax on June 5. The 15-meter Mayflower is named after a ship that carried a group of European settlers from Plymouth to No.0rth America more than 400 years ago. That famous trip, in 1620, prepared the way for Britain's colonization (殖民) of what Europeans called the New World.
The Mayflower experienced breakdowns on its latest trip, as well as an earlier attempt to cross the Atlantic. The first attempt, in June 2021, was called off after a breakdown forced the ship to return to Plymouth. Later, during the latest trip, a problem with the ship's power system led project organizers to send the ship to Portugal's Azores in the mid-Atlantic. A team member was flown to the area to perform repairs.
More troubles came in late May when the Mayflower developed another power issue. That trouble was also repaired. But the team decided to send the ship on a new path to Halifax. Experts say AI is getting much better at helping self- sailing ships understand their surroundings and pilot themselves. But most autonomous systems cannot repair themselves when the engine fails. The Mayflower is equipped with instruments designed to measure the health of ocean water. Such ships could be used to probe into parts of oceans that are too difficult for people to reach.
28.What can we learn about the Mayflower Autonomous Ship
A.It sailed by itself.
B.It is over 400 years old.
C.It is named after the latest ship.
D.It carried Europeans in the 16th century.
29.What happened to the Mayflower Autonomous Ship on its first Atlantic Ocean voyage
A.It set off from America.
B.It turned back halfway.
C.It received repairs on the scene.
D.It reached its destination smoothly.
30.What made the Mayflower fail to complete its sailing several times
A.The misuse of AI.
B.Some machine failures.
C.Some experts' suggestions.
D.The wrong choice of sailing course.
31.What does the underlined phrase "probe into" in the last paragraph mean
A.Move. B.Drag. C.Improve. D.Explore.

A new study published by Dan Johnson ofWashington and Lee University shows experimentally that reading fictionincreases empathy (共情).
The participants were asked to read a shortstory and report their mood. Then, in a staged accident, the experimenterknocked over several pens and recorded whether the participants helped pickthem up. They found that the more people were transported into the story, themore likely they were to help pick up the dropped pens. Those who engaged moredeeply with the fictional characters also showed more empathy for the real-lifeperson.
Empathy, like patience appears to be a characterthat can be improved with practice. Study has shown the more students readbooks, especially storybooks, the better they are at understanding the emotionsof others. However, researchers at the University of Michigan reported lastyear that empathy among college students had declined during the past 30 years, with an especially steep drop in the last decade. The reason is plain to see.
It's important to understand where empathy comesfrom in the first place. Looking at the evolution of the human mind, it hasbeen suggested that the ability to process hypothetical scenarios (假设情景) of what another person might be thinking provided an advantageto our early ancestors. Empathy may have arisen from one of the mostfundamental human characteristics—the ability to cheat.
Storytelling is essentially just a kind of art. IsHarry Potter real No, but by projecting ourselves into his story, we'reengaging a very real part of our brain. That sense of escape or socialparticipation often is what makes books so enjoyable. Unfortunately, books arefalling out of style. The cause of this is partially due to e book sales, whichhave arisen greatly over the past few years and taken a share out of thephysical book market without necessarily indicating a decline in reading.
Even though some of us would like to, we can'tblame the digital retailers for our decreased empathy. In fact, some peopleprobably read more with their more convenient e-readers than ever before withhard copies. It's the culture of reading in general that needs to change.
32.What did the experiment show
A.The participants stressed teamwork.
B.The participants were forced to pick up pens.
C.A story might have an instructive effect.
D.A person lost in a story paid less attention to real life
33.What probably causes the decline of college students' empathy
A.Limited patience B.The lack of reading
C.Diverse emotions. D.The social practice
34.What does empathy essentially result from according to the text
A.The art of lying.
B.The culture of reading
C.The escape from the society.
D.The ability to process real information
35.What is the main idea of the text
A.Reading stories can increase empathy
B.Paper books have edges over digital ones
C.Writers play a trick on readers by cheating
D.College students tend to lack understanding.

Dear Daniel,
I'm more than delighted to know that you are launching a Chinese culture festival, with the theme of "Come close to China",aiming to introduce your peers to a thriving China.
From my perspective, the activities may range from a Chinese calligraphy competition to an exhibition of paper cutting, and martial arts. Besides, it would be more desirable if students there could be given a chance to appreciate Beijing Opera. With a history of nearly 200 years, it's a form of traditional Chinese theatre, which is considered as the quintessence of Chinese culture.
Yours,
LiHua

【答案】24.D 25.A 26.B 27.C
根据第二段中的“If you are one of thosepeople who decides to stay in, you probably know the feeling of being the‘lame (差劲的) friend.’ This leads to feeling bad about yourself and feeling like a buzzkill.”
根据第二段中的“If you are one of thosepeople who decides to stay in, you probably know the feeling of being the ‘lame (差劲的)friend.’” 如果你是那些决定不出门的人之一,你可能知道自己是“差劲的朋友”的感觉;以及第三段中的“When students feel this way, they can also feel pressured intodoing something that they originally did not want to do.” 故选A。
根据第四段中的“Staying in and watching amovie by yourself or with friends is not a bad thing, and people shouldnormalize that not going out on the weekends is really not the worst thing.”独自待在家里或与朋友一起看电影并不是坏事,人们应该认识到周末不出门真的不是坏事;以及第五段“I remember watching “Where the Crawdads Sing” with some friendsone enjoyable and relaxing weekend. This type of environment didn't make mefeel pressured into doing anything because someone else was doing it.”
根据第一段“The way students spendtheir weekends can be different-some may enjoy going out and partying, andothers would prefer staying in with friends and family watching a movie.”学生们度过周末的方式可能会有所不同,有些人可能喜欢外出和聚会,其他人可能更喜欢与朋友和家人待在一起看电影;以及第四段“I don't think we should assume that everyone needs to go outduring the weekend in order to have fun, and the social pressure to do so canbe terrible. We should keep in mind that individuals are going through theirown personal situations, and everyone has their own reasons for not going out.Staying in and watching a movie by yourself or with friends is not a bad thing, and people should normalize that not going out on the weekends is really notthe worst thing.”

【答案】32.C 33.B 34.A 35.A

They found that the more people were transported into thestory, the more likely they were to help pick up the dropped pens. "他们发现,越多人被带入故事,他们就越有可能帮忙捡起掉在地上的钢笔;以及第三段中的"Study has shown the more students read books, especiallystorybooks, the better they are at understanding the emotions of others. "研究表明,学生读的书越多,尤其是故事书,他们就越能理解别人的情绪。可推知,实验表明一个故事可能会对人产生一定的教育启发作用。故选C。

The reason is plain tosee. "然而,密歇根大学的研究人员去年报告称,在过去30年里,大学生的同理心有所下降,过去10年降幅尤其大,原因显而易见。可知,大学生共情力的下降应该是由于缺乏阅读导致的。故选B。
34.考查细节理解。根据第四段中的"Empathy may have arisen from one of the most fundamental humancharacteristics—the ability to cheat. "共情可能源于人类最基本的特征之一—欺骗的能力;以及第五段中的"Storytelling isessentially just a kind of art. "讲故事本质上是一种艺术。可知,根据文章,共情的本质上是一种说谎的艺术。故选A。
